News of the day, 2/14

Hey everyone. It was a COLD one on Wednesday afternoon for the big AUM-Martin Methodist game. I was surprised to see none of you out there in the balmy 42-degree warmth. Q.V. Lowe, former Auburn ace pitcher and graduate, won his 1,000th game.

That's pretty cool. Q.V. definitely is one of the good guys.

I've got the Auburn-Alabama women's game tonight, which will preclude me from seeing LOST live. I'll have to settle for DVR a few hours later. I also have the women's game on Sunday, which will preclude me from watching the Daytona 500. Nell, you're killin me.

Yes, I like NASCAR. I may even love it. That and European soccer. Not many around naming those two as faves -- particularly in Alabama.

I know you all want to chat about Auburn football and whatnot.

I'm gearing up for what surely will be one of the most intriguing spring practice periods in Auburn history. You've got an offensive coordinator with one game and like two weeks of practice time under his belt. New defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads has none. I'm sure some players will be changing roles. I also expect a few to leave. I'm planning to cover those practices as I would two-a-days. I hope basketball responsibilities don't interfere too much.

I've received a few emails about the Chris Todd vs. Kodi Burns situation. I think it'll be Todd as the starter with Burns in his (familiar) changeup role. Todd has been Franklin's guy for a long time and has college experience in the spread. He's going to play a lot -- barring a Daniel Cobb-esque fall from grace.

I had a reader email me to ask about Chris Slaughter's offseason weight regimen. I hope that was a joke.

You should know that Zac Etheridge is going to be a first- or second-team all-conference player this fall. I have it on good authority that he's really good. He was a lightly regarded recruit, too.

Auburn demolished Alabama in women's hoops Thursday night. It was 74-49. The band was going through the whole "we just beat the hell out of you" chant, which seemed laughable considering how awful Alabama is this season. We're talking 1-and-8 bad.

Best move so far is Airon Savage to CB. With Etheridge, McNeil, and 3 really good signees we're really looking good back there. I've always wanted more than one tall CB back there. Airon is an ALL SEC type of guy. He was predicted to be an ALL SEC safety last year but never was able to play. Very excited about that.

I really feeling quite the opposite about Bryant Miller. I had high hopes for him. He looked to me like he had everything physically to be a stud on the DL.

Jay, I can visualize Slaughter making some dramatic changes to his body. If he's a hard worker, which I haven't heard one way or the other thus far, he could really do wonders with that frame. He has a really proportioned frame to be so long.

Jay G., Had no idea you were a NASCAR fan. NASCAR ranks right below AU football and basketball with me. I attended the fist race ever run at Talladega and have been hooked ever since. I just watched an excited Kenny Wallace race his way into the 500. The dude had no ride a month ago and it would have been the first time in 25 yrs that a Wallace would not have been in the race. Nice story. Hope you are able to see the next race. The qualifying races today are probably some of the best racing of the weekend...

Spring practice is going to be very interesting. I don't know if anybody has noticed this yet, but with the exception of QB, we are loaded.

I watched the first duel today.

A Valentine's Day at my daughter's school kept me from the second. Too many red flags. Not sorry I missed it.

I hate to see Boris miss out. He's a class act.

Nascar is somewhat understandable eventhough I am not a fan, but European Soccer is borderline inexcusable. Although you deserve some credit because I started watching "Lost" around the time you had your cable incident and that is a rather righteous show. I am on episode 9 of season 2, I'll be able to join the discussion soon enough.

Bryant Miller a four star? Thanks for that one rivals. Why do all the transfer's names come out at once? Do the coaches sit them down and explain their situation or do they just hold on to the names until a certain time?

Auburn Football is pretty much neck and neck with the US military. No need in guessing because it's all you'll ever get just grin and shake your head.

4 star? Yea, a 4 star who couldn't cut it. They're everywhere. You're nothing without hard work and discipline. I'm a two or three star executive producing five star results. Damn right.

I'm a two-star writer doing ... whatever kind of work you think I'm doing. Surely it's at least two-star output. Anything above that makes me an overachiever, which will make my parents so proud.

Ron: Glad you got into the show. I started late, too. I knocked out Season Uno during one week-long trip to the beach. Caught up halfway through Season Dos thanks to iTunes.

It is a righteous show. And there is so much left for you to learn!

scott from tucson said: i was raised in germany (air force brat) and always have had an affinity for soccer. i suppose it's an acquired taste. i just read that guitar hero is coming out with an aerosmith version. now that could get me into it. oh, and what's the deal with florida state getting to choose their own punishment? sure wish auburn had had that option at the end of the dye era.

I think all schools get to "recommend" their own punishment. That doesn't necessarily mean the NCAA will accept it.

not that i have anything in particular against florida state (back when i was in grad school at au, we played some incredible games against them), but their problems seem so systemic that, i believe, the "death penalty" shouldn't be off the table.

Auburn basketball needs to try to get ole miis put on their schedule a few more times and they would be alright.

Have any of you seen the reports on what will have to happen at Alabama in regards to current roster and the 32 new signees? First off, 7 of these new signees won't be able to play football at Alabama in '08. With that said, the reporting out of Tuscaloosa never really highlighted any serious academic problems with its top ranked class while Auburn clearly defined academic plans with some signees and even took action with some of its signees already.

Secondly, 10 of Alabama's current scholarship players must be removed from the team. 10. How easy will that be? I'm sure the spin will be super positive. In reality, feel sorry for the players and their families that will now have to figure out how to pay tuition.

Furthermore, aren't you all glad Julio Jones had no "interest" in Auburn? What has he done right in the last year? He's been the recipient of some expensive gifts, kicked off his bball team, displayed a really lazy attitude on a nationally televised high school game, and now testifying in a murder case.

By the way, Jerrell Harris' mom landed a big job at a law firm 7 days ago. I'm sure she's one of several with a tasty new life.

I'm leaving that up because it's obviously there for entertainment purposes only.

ALSO: I WILL get back here today for a roundup. What a Sunday in the greater Montgomery area. That Prattville tornado really made it rain up there.
