Blakeney hired Franklin in 2006, though he planned to do so much earlier.
Here are some interesting things Blakeney had to say about Franklin:
- Blakeney wanted to hire Franklin months after the entire staff at Kentucky was dismissed in February 2001. The problem? "To be honest, I just didn't have a lot of money at that point. He couldn't just (come to Troy) without being sure he could make it financially. A few years later, we were better off, he was better off and we got it together."
- Blakeney never believed Franklin was involved in the problems that led to NCAA sanctions at Kentucky. "I knew he was clean."
- Blakeney believes Franklin's scheme will translate well to the SEC. ``He's a fundamental football coach who understands that you can't just throw the ball to be successful. It's the best system I've ever seen. He's the best there is."
- How enamored was Blakeney? After Franklin left for Auburn, Troy promoted Franklin's protege (27-year-old Neal Brown) into the top spot. ``When Tony left, we promoted the guy who was closest we could come to Tony without it being Tony. That's how strongly I feel about it."

a.) How is Auburn "flying under the radar" with a 42-9 record since 2004?
b.) I don't think it's imperative that Kodi Burns emerge as the No. 1 guy.
Tommy and Wally have a love-hate relationship that spans back more than 20 years. I love listening to them jab at each other. Tommy always says he doesn't read the newspaper, yet he has a keen awareness of what Auburn beat writers and selected regional columnists (Wally being one) are saying about him. Funny.

NCAA 09 is pretty good, pretty angry mario fannin is like a 77 overall, same as chris todd...the rating of the teams could be much better, fsu has a 99 defense, ours is like 87
ReplyDeleteHe's only pretty angry now?
ReplyDeleteHey Jay, don't do video games BUT love AU! What's with Auburn Undercover w/ your buddy Phillip Marshall? The site continues to open on the original annoumcement!
ReplyDeleteAny information you can share?
I don't understand your question. It opens on the original announcement?
ReplyDeleteback to yesterday ... I personally think Tate is underrated and under played.
ReplyDeleteUnder played? He gets a ton of snaps.
ReplyDeleteI guess. It just seems like to me he is a "groove" runner. It takes 5 or 6 snaps to get his thing going. Then he comes out of the game. Maybe I don't know what I am taling about. It just seems to be what I have noticed.
ReplyDeleteIn contrast, it seems like Lester is a "cold" runnner. He comes in and runs 60 yards on the first play.
Just the way I see it.
Your observations jibe with mine, though it takes Ben Tate more like 15 carries to get going. The payoff, though, is less than Kenny Irons.
ReplyDeleteHe was another back who needed acclimation time.
I was going to say that, but I had already hit enter before I thought about it.
ReplyDeleteYou know, Blakeney discussing someone's past has a certain Shakespearian quality to it.
or would that be ... Shakespearean?
ReplyDeleteIt was my favorite part of the whole interview ... Larry deeming Franklin "clean."
ReplyDeleteIf Larry says dude is clean, you know, I think I believe him.
keep it down home, cuz
