Practice report, 8/28

Hey everyone. Here's a quick look at what Auburn worked on Wednesday afternoon.

I have some other stuff going on, so this'll have to be brief.
  • Two-hour practice

  • About half of it was at Jordan-Hare, where they worked on substitutions and all that fun stuff. Coach Tommy Tuberville said he saw a few more mistakes than expected, so practice went a little long.

  • I know this is seriously minute ... but Greg Knox, who coaches outside receivers, will coach from the field this season. He's been upstairs in the box since 1999. The only guys up this year will be Terry Price (DEs), James Willis (LBs) and Steve Ensminger (Inside WRs). Tuberville's man behind the scenes, Andy Lutz, also helps those guys in the coaches' box.

  • If you want to see some of those obscure first-year guys (ie LB Spencer Pybus, CB Drew Cole, DE Cam Henderson) keep an eye out during special-teams situations this weekend. Tuberville said they'll be using more freshmen than usual in those roles. Not sure why, really, because it's not like those guys suddenly will make the varsity roster with a big hit or something. I guess it's good to give those kids a taste of the good life before subjecting them to five months of redshirt workouts.

  • Auburn's significant injuries: DE A.J. Greene (hamstring), DE Jomarcus Savage (shoulder), WR Montez Billings (hamstring), TB Tristan Davis (foot/ankle).

Ben Tate's become a big boy. How much does Yox make? That guy's probably the third most important coach on the team.

He's the get-back coach on game days, too, so he's worth a legit salary right there. The weight stuff is just gravy.

Maybe he could be the UFC ref at practice too.

JGT: Any thoughts on Chingy heading (back) to Athens?

2 players I would love to see play a FULL season-T Davis and T Blackmon. So much potential and so little actual production.

Auburn has got to be the smallest team in the SEC. Small OL.Fairly small WRs to SEC standards. Small LBs. PPL...

I don't really see how Auburn has a small OL ... aside from Ryan Pugh playing out of position at RT. He's still a very good blocker.

Ziemba is huge. Green is 6-2, decent by guard standards, and is thick. Bosley looks like a center. Byron Isom is the thickest guy on the team besides Blanc. And then Pugh.

As for Chingy leaving The Beat: I guess he just couldn't hang on the Plains. It's pretty rough and tumble these days. I guess he prefers the serenity at UGA.

You know who hates that most? Columbus. At last count, Columbus has one sports writer on staff.

There's no more warnings on the the sidelines this year, right?

Get back coach is in full mode when the game starts.

There are no official warnings, but I don't think the officials getting bonuses for making the call or anything.

I still expect that to be a rare penalty.

Ryan Pugh is listed as 6'-4" that's not that small. I think it's his thickness and his number that makes him look like a center.

I don't think Pugh is 6-4 in real life. Maybe I'm wrong ...

When you say small for AU's OL, you obviously mean light because they are light compared to other teams according to the most recent depth chart release. Ziemba's an exception and he's 6'7".

AU OL has one starter over 300lbs. But I don't think a gang of grazers would do much good in this offense. Need good feet and plenty of endurance.
