Ask an Auburn Beat Writer

Hey everyone. Enjoyed the trip to Columbus, Miss., more than usual.

Howard Stern had AC/DC on -- one of my favorite bands -- and it was great listening to Angus and Brian chat it up about their new album that drops in October. Screw the Stones ... AC/DC has stayed truer through the years.

Now that I'm here, I'm available for questions and general chatter if you're around. If not, I'll just keep watching more of Chappelle's Show Season 2.

Oh, here are a few pictures from my trip:

This is from the Entec on North Blvd. near 231. I haven't seen out-of-gas stations in a LONG time.

This is the highest price I saw along the way. This is from somewhere slightly west of Tuscaloosa.

I misidentified this area as Vance earlier. It is not Vance. Thanks to anonymous for pointing that out.

Of note, there were long lines at the pumps in Montgomery and Prattville. I didn't see a single line in Tuscaloosa or beyond. I guess panic spreads quickly in the River Region.

SO ANYWAY: The comment lines are open.

Correction on Vance...is T-looser not WEST VANCE?

I know how to solve the gas price crisis, but the liberal world will call me a pig.

Price per barrel has increased more than 1000% in less than 10 years. This seems unreasonable to me.

They are RAPING us. Who is they? Suadi, Iran, Venezuela, etc.

Here's the solution. It's the "What would the Godfather do" method.

Make an offer they can't refuse.

"We are going to buy your oil for $22/barrel. Hope you like that offer. We think it's fair. If you don't like it, here is our other offer. We'll just take it and pay you nothing ... Which offer do you like?"

Could be. Not a lot going on in Vance aside from the Auburn hotties (not the HABOTN kind, unfortunately) rolling through in their Jettas.

As for you, Phred, I hope you have insight on some new kind of fuel for all these American cars.

I'm not sure used beer carries the punch I need in the ol' Maxima fuel tank.

I just saw Wesley Carroll.

I swear I saw him checking Twitter just now.

9:26 PM
Blogger ADP said...

Do you know how much a gallon of gas costs in Venezuela?

13 cents. No kidding.

We don't need new fuel. We need a new deal. We could do what I am talking about. We just don't have the backbone. We are afraid the French might hate us. OOOOOOO. That would be terrible.

9:29 PM
Blogger ADP said...

Do we have instuctions on Twitter usage? I need some.

9:30 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'm certain that our relationship with the French is no part of this problem.

I mean, seriously, Ike looks like a bad thunderstorm right now. It's "only" 105 mph.

South Floridians might consider a raincoat for that kind of action. Nothing more.

Veazey started using Twitter the other day and, well, it seemed innovative.

I have maybe two dozen people "following" me via Twitter. Seems like fun -- particularly once I get this iPhone next week that would allow me to post Twits from anywhere.

The surge. High water. 20' surge and a 17' wall. That is not a very good ratio. Same problem in the N.O.

What is our country code?

9:43 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

No idea. I saw that, too, and was wondering what to do.

So I did like anyone who is over his head technologically: Navigated away.

Oh, and thanks to anonymous for the Vance correction. I was identifying the wrong town.

I figured it out. country code not required.

Oil dropped below $100/barrel today for the first time in five months.

... and petrol prices in my neighborhood jumped 9% today.

I'm supposed to believe this is supply-and-demand economics?

i think i've got the HABOTN set up on my phone now. anxiously awaiting my first cellular twitter message. phred, looks like we're twitter buddies. sweet. i had 3 friends already using it. the HABOTN is a plethora of knowledge.

Dude ... that's what I'm SAYIN! It's price gouging on a universal scale. They name the price and we pay it. I don't know why.

Gas, man. Whatcha gonna do?

My wife's Sequoia is paid in full next summer. Then it'll be daddy's turn for a vehicle.

I'm thinkin' Mini Cooper. Thirty-five mpg. Covertible. Sirius/XM installed and blaring Big 80s.

That's a good image right there.

I'm ranked 26,472 on the hard difficulty.

I think that's good for someone over 30.

10:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

As a south Floridian, 105 mph is about what it takes to get my to ditch the umbrella and put on a raincoat, but yeah, nothing more. Still wearing shorts and flip flops and hanging around. There is a pretty cool tradition in this state. Approaching Hurricanes bring out the tailgating nature in people (which means we gather around and consume waaay too much bourbon.

USA country code is +1, by the way.

Gas has increased 14 cents per gallon today in South Florida. If I see $4.29, I'm going to cry. Mini Cooper sounds like it may pay for itself at that price.

10:33 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

And as far as aggregate score on the hard difficulty, I'm ranked 1,988.

Not too shabby.

summary: tied 34-34 with 41 seconds left, Kansas driving into USF territory, KU QB Reesing (sp?) threw one up for grabs that USF intercepted and ran back inside the KU 30. 2 seconds left, kicker (back-up freshman who is kicking i his 1st game ever) kicks the game winner. wow! it's pandemonium in tampa baby!

The used cars were ... holding their value well.

random musing at 11:40 ET, but i'm frickin' sick of the COLLISION AT THE COLISEUM hype. glad it's on at the same time as our game so i won't have to watch more than a few minutes of it during commercials. i hope USC kills OSU.

I mean, that looks like an easy one to call.

High residual value makes leasing the way to go right now...Mini has a cool offer with unlimited miles on a lease, which is good for those of us who drive a ton. Do you know how far Auburn is from south Florida at 10cent a mile? Far!

Ahhh, didn't realize KU/USF was tonight.

Surely you jest.

JGT,

Could you please run down the hall and bang on all of the doors? (just make sure to get back in your room before one actually opens. you don't want to get torn limb from limb by a sleepy DB or offensive lineman).

no, Mini's been offering it for a couple of years now (I haven't checked lately). Used to be something on their website. I'll find a link and send it to you.

11:12 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

correction. looks like they've done away with it and replaced it with their "motoring lease." Basically adds flexibility to your mileage requirements. There's no max or min, but you negotiate the miles into the price. Still seems like leasing is the way to go, but that'd depend on the person, their driving habits and needs, and their budget.

Thanks for the Mini lease idea.

No thanks for me getting my butt kicked for disturbing some sleeping Bulldogs.

I have a defensive tackle next door. He could rip my arms out of socket, I think.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I just went to get a Diet Pepsi from vending.

Turns out they have security stationed in the hallway. He's there "to make sure nobody disturbs the players" and he'll be sitting there all damn night.

It's just him and a chair and empty hallway.

THAT'S a tough job.

11:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

could HE rip your arms from their sockets?

Tough job indeed. What's the over/under on what time he falls asleep sitting in the chair?

11:45 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I don't think he could take me. He's and older fella.

Surely he'll fall asleep.

I can't check. If I open the door, it'll stir him. He's only three doors down.

Hey, that would be a cool name for a band.

you need one of those secret spy cams that you can put under the door and see around corners with, a bookie, and a bunch of gamblers.

vegas, baby!

I've got to go find my twitter login so I can set it up on my phone so I can get your updates from the game tomorrow. I didn't actually think people I cared to hear broadcasts from used it.
