Friday chatter

Hey everyone. Big time work yesterday. While attendance at the Thursday afternoon campfire was sparse (MVPs: wartiger, scottie b, monica) we rebounded with an awesome night of comments. This place gets hotter every day.

I guess blogs really do matter after all.

AUBURN'S SCHEDULE:
Tommy Tuberville is giving his team a few days off before a short week of preparation for West Virginia. Players who don't need major treatment (as decided by trainers) are allowed to flee campus today and tomorrow. Players are due back Sunday morning. Their usual Sunday walk-through will be replaced this week by a standard, two-hour grinder.

MY SCHEDULE: Going to see "W" this afternoon and on to the Sylacauga-Briarwood Christian game for fun tonight.

A VALUED CUSTOMER: I have been awarded a "beta token" for the new Call of Duty game. That means I am allowed to play a test version for quality assurance purposes in advance of the real game, which hits retail on Nov. 12. Yes, that makes me a nerd.

Anyway, the game is pretty sweet. Same controls as Call of Duty 4. A 5-kill streak gets an "artillery strike" while a 7-kill streak gets a dog attack. Dogs just kinda roll out there and bite The Bad Guys. Yes, I'm a nerd.

A RELIC: Tony Franklin's placard you see here has been removed. I wish I could have gotten that before it was thrown away. I shot this the day he was fired. I saw Tim Jackson, one member of Jay Jacobs' "senior management team," chilling in that office a few days back. Has he moved in? If so, I can't believe football coaches would consider that a welcome addition considering the circumstances.

Franklin still isn't interested in talking publicly. My guess is he has work already lined up for the 2009 season and doesn't want to compromise that deal. From one loudmouth to another: That's the correct decision ... unless you want to give the HABOTN an exclusive. Then it would be great to talk.

MUST-SEE TV:
This has been around for a bit, but several HOTTIES have been talking about it and The Beat Writers enjoyed a chuckle yesterday.

(Thanks for the link, scottie b. and taylor)

  4. Tim Jackson in a football coach's office, huh? I certainly will not coach at Auburn ever again.

  5. There are various ways to travel that path:

    *Post often
    *Post memorably
    *Email me important information

  6. I am going to start posting as anonymous, then I can say I am in the Ring of Fire!

I'm sure something huge will happen this weekend since I am going out of town and won't be checking in all the time. Although I am sure I can find an internet connection in NYC somehwere...

Have a great weekend everyone since we don't have to worry about Auburn losing!

    Jay,

I want to feel the heat, burn me..

It seems like not much news is coming out of Auburn, but you know I think thats great news, this off week could not have come at a better time. We need to get out of the national spotlight. Too bad we will be smack dab in the middle of it on the ESPN game. Which has been prone to upsets lately. Seems West Virginia needs this game just as much as we do. I hate Pat White should be healthy by the time we play them. I still dont think they are the same team they were the past two years with Slaton gone, etc. If we even have a prayer our defense will have to have a showing from early in the season, with lots of turnovers in the redzone.

  9. In that case, Tony Franklin should have taken the placard and included it with the next purchase of the Tony Franklin system, you know,"Act now and receive this official placard at no extra charge!"

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thats not good that one of JJ's best buds is moving into a coaches office. I can assure that it will not sit well with the coaches. Maybe Tim Jackson wants to give the OC position a chance. I hear he has been working on his playbook in NCAA 08

    ReplyDelete
  11. JG, i love that you're giving yourself photo cred. nice touch.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Any chance the players might take the "off time" and work to get better individually?

    ReplyDelete

    Jay,

Email you with important information ?

Is that like in Billy Madison when Eric asks the janitor to spy on Billy and he says what did you find out..the janitor says "Billy likes Milk".

That kind of information or more like stock tips or recipes.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Jay,

Josh has been saying all week on the Round Table that Knox and Nall are gone after this season. Knox I'm fine with, but isn't Nall considered one of the best in the nation?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Scottie: I posted the "Lowder" video to the main blog, giving you full linkage credit.

    ReplyDelete
  16. come on jay! i posted that in the campfire yesterday

    ReplyDelete
  17. I know Josh's source on that information and I consider that source highly credible.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That was hilarious! I've seen that clip before but I can't remember what they were spoofing now. This one was much better!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ok. Ok. I'll give Taylor credit, too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh the Irony..Nall and Knox gone, Ensminger Safe.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I just saw that video with Hitler. It was last used on Alabama and Mike Shula.

    ReplyDelete
  22. if he rumor about knox and nall are true... that would be big..likely tubbs covering his own tail, but it is needed. ensminger needs to go too. i wouldnt mind knox staying on as recruiting coordinator ONLY

    ReplyDelete
  23. Will Muschamp > Tim Jackson

    ReplyDelete
  24. "important information" = tips later determined to be credible and useful to me in a journalistic capacity.

Also, guidance on telephony issues earns credit.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anonymous8:59 AM

Well Franklin brought Chris todd in with him to run his system. Do you think Ensminger will bring his QB son back from Lousiana Tech to run his system..(sarcasm).

    ReplyDelete
  26. As far as the Nall/Knox stuff, it's not a situation where I would write that in the newspaper or even here in the blog.

    I'm saying: I know Josh's source and it's a good one.

    ReplyDelete
  27. if that were to happen jay, what are your thoughts as to how itwould play out and how effective it would be...assuming he gets a solild OC and the guy brings in quality assistants?

    ReplyDelete
  28. The main question for Tuberville would be does he have enough talent on this to convince an OC that this a good position to come, knowing that he will need job security. I think that is why we will end up getting somebody from a smaller program, but he may be pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's also assuming Tuberville is the coach next season ...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't buy the Nall thing. Knox maybe...if they want to score points.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jay..have you backed down from the 75% chance gone in your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  32. No. I'm still at 75%.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anyone heard the status of Pat White? I wonder if he is goind to play.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous9:09 AM

Pat didnt play last two weeks and was doubtful

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous9:14 AM

J Jacobs and T Jackson. Other SEC schools would kill for this power duo.

    ReplyDelete
  36. WVsports.com (rivals site) reports Pat White will be available next week. He's recovering from a concussion. Also, White's back-up, Jarrett Brown was reported at 60 percent capability because of right (throwing) shoulder and thigh injuries (as of Thurs. nite).

Jay does the Montgomery Advertiser have any editorial control over this blog? I see their header at the top of the main page so I have always wondered.

  38. Jay adn guys thanks for the Video....i was crying here at work, everyone thought i had gone MAD!!!
come to think f it i might have waiting for Auburn's season to run around is like waiting for the economy to rebound quickly!!!!
Time heals all wounds adn Auburn is wounded right now, just need to put some of my grandma salve on the cut and get back in the game....
That Crap she has will heal wounds and also fix cracks in masonry walls and damns for gods sake!!!

  39. This guys's bio was linked to one of the boards yesterday as somebody CTT is looking at. If we could land him, our OC and OL troubles could be solved.

  40. Cory, I just do not see how he would come to Auburn. He is probably a God at Mizzu right now and more than likely will be HC soon.

    ReplyDelete
  41. we should go after jim zorn...surely he would leave washington to come coach under tubberville

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous9:39 AM

Yea I have seen that video when they were spoofing UGA for the dog dying....I think....

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree Eddie. The guy that posted the link said AU was going after him pretty hard. I guess we'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Jay:

Still like to think that we surprise the WVU folks and debut some interesting formations and plays.

    ReplyDelete

You checking out recruits at the high school game tonight or just enjoying the amateur competition?

    Either way, enjoy it.

I'm on my way to sing at a gig in south Alabama. Peace out Hotties. Holla at you all later.

I talked to several people I know in the Troy area and they all said that the rumors of Franklin's return to Troy are just rumors.

Jay or any Jenna Fischer fans,

Have yall seen 'Employee of the Month' with Matt Dillon where she pays a bit part as a escort?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I have not seen Employee of the Month, but it sounds good so far.

I saw her in Walk Hard.

"In my dreams you're blowing me...some kisses."

    ReplyDelete
  51. anybody hear Glenn Coffee on the roundtable yesterday?
talking about his Faith and how that is his motivation:
"If somebody's coming after me...the way I see it, they tryin' to tackle Jesus"

    ReplyDelete
  52. That explains the numbers he's putting up this year.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i always envisoned jesus as a QB or WR...or possibly a safety...not a RB.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I work for the Advertiser.

Blogs, particularly this one, are not a priority for the Advertiser. I disagree with our corporate approach.

I dedicate a lot of personal time to the HABOTN because this is the future of journalism. This is what newspapers should be doing -- creating something that interests people rather than the same ol same ol.

    So that's my story.

  56. i just watched the 'Let's DUET' clip from WALK HARD for the first time. nice. real nice.

  57. Anonymous, Jackson/Jacobs power duo???

    Woohoo! Funny stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  58. that video was great..holy cow I cant stop grinning. Thanks that made me feel a little better now back to my thera flu.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I've been asking this for a couple of years. Does there exist any sort of comparison data on how a player performs in college relative to how they were rated as a high school player (by Rivals or Scout or whatever)?

    ReplyDelete
  60. mond, there is stuff out there. I've seen it floating around. 5 stars, by the percentages, are most abundant in the NFL as a matter of fact.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anonymous10:40 AM

Wouldn't Tuberville make the decision to fire Nall and Knox? If so then he'd have either leaked it himself or had discussions with someone. I wouldn't think he'd leak it himself, but he might have told someone who he thought wouldn't blabber their mouth and they leaked it. Maybe more likely he had discussions with someone who leaked it, perhaps those discussions centered around how he rights the ship for next year. Meaning he's safer than we expected. Maybe I'm just trying to think of news now since this has been such a slow week.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anonymous10:43 AM

    Mond,

I don't know of that data, but I've gone back through Rivals on recruiting classes for the past several years to see how those rankings compared to how the team did. If I remember correctly, it was a mix bag of results.

    ReplyDelete
  63. vrga, last year it was know in various circles that Borges was done in late September. I told Jay G that I had hear this was happening as a matter of fact.

    ReplyDelete
  64. didn't Tubs have double hernia surgery over the summer? He's had at least two neck surgeries? He's a robot. He needs rest.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Anonymous10:48 AM

Is this the year the assistants are vested in state retirement? For some reason I thought that was last year.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Takes 10 years doesn't it? This would be 10?

    ReplyDelete
  67. This is the 10th year, so all the original Ole Miss BBQ Crew would be vested after this year.

    ReplyDelete
  68. If fact, I believe it was 10 years ago this week, that Auburn was in day # 2 of breaking in Brother Oliver as the head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  69. if they knew this was the year and tubbs knew he wanted to change philosophy...why not wait till this year to hire franklin or whomever. that way, we dont have chris todd...burns plays all year, the team wins with a system that has won games. and they can tell recruits all year that they are making a change, etc.

i guess that would be too logical

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think we win more games, but not sure if Burns would play that well in the old offense either.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anonymous11:01 AM

Well, I'm surprised he's even discussing getting rid of the BBQ crew. That would lead me to believe that he's less than pleased with how accepting they were of Franklin. Or maybe he thinks they were the problem and not Franklin or Borges. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall of Tuberville's office when they came running in saying Franklin was being mean to them.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous11:06 AM

Just heard over the cubicle the CTT just got fired. The Bammers went nuts high fiving and stuff. Well I just went to the info guru JGT and found nothing. I then walked over the the bammers and told them well Tubbs is on a plane to Maryland to look at our QB of the future. They mubbled things and went back to the cube. If it wasn't for this site we would not ever have any real info to go by. WDE!

    ReplyDelete
  73. about tackling Coffee = tackling Jesus: so does that make Tray Blackmon the antichrist for the hit he put on him last year?

And as far as recruiting rankings go, there is a rather strong correlation between stars a player has out of high school and them playing in the NFL. I read an article about it, but can't remember where. You have to look no further than the final top ten every year. Sure, there are anomolies, but generally these schools are the top recruiters according to rivals and scout.

I will say Auburn is one of the better ones at finding diamonds in the rough, but you never know if that luck will run out.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Vandy is not that good, neither is Arkansas.

I don't think Ark will get 27 on Kentucky.

I think LSU will be looking to bounce back, but I don't think they are that good either. Since that game is at SC it'll be closer than a lot of people think, but I figure Lester the Hat will pull it out.

I don't give any team who played our pityful offense in a close game too much credit.

    ReplyDelete
  75. ring of fire, baby! number of posts are waaay up over last year. keep up the good work, jgt.

  76. Anonymous11:26 AM

Aw man, trackem won out on the front page. (*sigh) Quote fame is so fleeting.

I think I'm going to have to look around at other blogs now. I'm looking to hear a commitment from you, Jay G.

On a serious note, have you considered other software for the campfire? If so, take at the liveblogging software that EDSBS and Dr. Saturday are using. It's not exactly a chat client, but it apparently updates in real time, plus the entire campfire can be archived and posted on the blog after it is over. It looks pretty cool, but I really have no idea how much work it would be to implement. I was just thinking about it because scrolling up during a campfire-in-progress can be maddening.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I can't permit a copy-and-paste of someone else's full work without appropriate linkage.

    That's PMarsh's property.

No harm done, just keep that in mind next time.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Great idea, weagle251.

I just registered for the same chat client EDSBS uses. We'll take that for a test run soon.

    Archive = good.

    Thanks for the tip.

    ReplyDelete
  79. muschamp and vrga - thanks for the info. If y'all see that data again I would so appreciate a link.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Would love to see Auburn come out in a wishbone formation about 5-10 snaps next week. I think it would be hilarious and would throw WVU for a loop.

    ReplyDelete
  81. archives for the campfires would seriously be pimptastic. if you're late it's almost impossible to scroll up to catch up. nice work 251.

    ReplyDelete
  82. 'wishbone' equals exact opposite of the 'spread'. doubt tubs goes that far. would be fun to watch, though.

    ReplyDelete
  83. No wishbone. We can't run what we have practices all year successfully.

I can't bare to see us attempt to run another formation and it not work either.

Unless we are going for the NCAA record for most different formations ran during a single season for negative yards, we should skip the wishbone.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Sorry, Jay. I thought I might be crossing a line there. But didn't know since I only grabbed a portion of it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Wareaglelerk..I love the idea of running the spread / wishbone / i-formation / Ace Formation all in the same year. Can you imagine what NCAA 09's playbook will look like.

    ReplyDelete
  86. The playbook might look huge, but our offensive rating of 25 might make it hard to use.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Wareaglelerk..Thats what Dynasty mode is for. Rise from the ashes.
