Getting ready for a big (off) Saturday

Hey everyone. It's another Saturday without Auburn football, which has good and bad points.

Bad for you because the Tigers are 4-4 and won't get better today.

Good for you because other things now can occupy your time. Me? I'm going to see Weezer tonight in Atlanta. I've been digging Rivers and the boys since buying their cassette tape in 1995. Yes, younger readers: Life wasn't always about MP3s or even CDs.

So for those of you who would prefer to watch some football this afternoon, here is a handy guide:

11 a.m. -- Illinois @ Wisconsin, ESPN2 (Wisconsin, 27-17)
11 a.m. -- Texas Tech @ Kansas, ESPN (Texas Tech, 63-21)
11:30 a.m. -- My Alma Mater @ Florida, Raycom (Florida, 63-5)
11:30 a.m. -- Oklahoma @ Kansas State, FSN (Oklahoma, 58-35)
2:30 p.m. -- Georgia @ LSU (Georgia, 52-38)
2:30 p.m. -- Oklahoma State @ Texas (Texas, 28-24)
2:30 p.m. -- Michigan State @ Michigan (Michigan State, 35-21)
2:30 p.m. -- Virginia @ Georgia Tech (Virginia, 24-17)
5:30 p.m. -- Colorado @ Missouri (Missouri, 58-0)
6 p.m. -- Middle Tennessee @ Mississippi State (MSU, 31-22)
6:45 p.m. -- Alabama @ Tennessee (Alabama, 23-3)
7 p.m. -- Penn State @ Ohio State (PSU, 13-6)
7 p.m. -- Notre Dame @ Washington (Notre Dame, 33-7)
9:15 p.m. -- Southern Cal @ Arizona (USC, 17-10)

Try to start this off-day on a positive note (hopefully) ...

Quick recruiting question - anyone heard anything about Freddie Smooth, a DL from New Orleans who didn't qualify and was placed? Is he still onboard and will he play at AU in 2009?

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I answered on the other thread, but I don't know anything about him.

Why would you ask about someone like that? Just curious.

11:28 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

He was a good catch by AU, offered by OK and others, signed in February but didn't qualify. Judging from the way AR and WVU gashed our DL in the last two games, seems like we could use some help there.

I am not Tim but will get logged in later. Anyone watch Texas Tech? Tell me that offense will not work in the SEC. look how quickly Harrell gets rid of the ball. It will work.

Did anyone notice Michigan gave Rich Rod a 6 year contract. They are horrible, but they are not backing away from a coach that runs the spread. There are waaaaay t omany AU fans that are throwing in the towel on this offense. Yes it does not work now, but with the right players it will.

Back to Texas Tech, we have NO ONE that runs routes like even the 3rd string guy they have. You just have to get the players, which Tubbs is doing. However, I fear the deed has been done. Look for an announcemnt after the UGA game.

Another personnel question, Jay (sorry).

What's become of D'Antoine Hood? He played a lot in the first two games but I haven't noticed him playing in recent games. Is he hurt or has his stock dropped in the minds of CPR et al? Any ideas?

11:59 AM

Jay, I don't know how to say it, but the was Kentucky is playing at the moment, it makes it great to be an Auburn Tiger.

12:09 PM

D'Antoine isn't as quick as Roderick and, as such, he needs to be real sharp like Jerraud.

D'Antoine isn't there yet. He's too young.

As for Smooth, I haven't heard anything.

not Tim, I agree we shouldn't get rid of Tuberville.

I disagree on receiver talent. I think we have some outstanding receiving talent that we have managed to turn into caca. Somehow something has to change with this.

Mr. sensible, I thought you were doing some type of gameday show.

12:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

mark, I didn't hear Tommy's comments, but that seems correct. I can't figure out how West Virginia didn't manage to score at least 50. When you run the ball for 15 yards at a pop, you should score a lot.

Talk about coaches with delusion as their middle name, here are Fat PHil's comments recently...

Fulmer said earlier this week. “We want to be successful. If we beat UCLA like we should have, I think, and we beat Auburn like we should – but when you’re not doing well, everything is looked at with a very critical eye by us and, I am sure, by everybody else concerned.

12:22 PM

Steve, I think he was saying that the score should have been closer.

Honestly, after the first quarter, I thought we would win 48-0

Dang, Mr. S., the time difference mixed me up and missed your show.

wegl98 - I don't see Smooth in the Rivals recruiting database, for what that's worth.

Important Question of the day: There are so many GQ dudes here I know y'all can answer this one. When did sideburns (including big huge pork chops) get popular again? I know they were a couple of years ago, but I thought they were dead.

12:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yes, mark, I was using my obscure since of sarcasm. Let me put it this way. West Virginia punted once in the game, in the fourth quarter. If your opponent only punts once in a game, you deserve to loose.

12:46 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

monica, we live in interesting times. It seems that now that "old school" has replaced "old fashioned". there is much more of a variety of styles out there. Short or long hair is one of them. Another is the re-emergence of the Afro going right along with the shaved head. This is indeed the variety decade, at least in terms of appearance. In terms of music, the music died.

12:49 PM

I think I've hit a new low, I'm watching UK get drilled by UF and I'm slightly happy because I now think we might not be the worst team in the SEC.

Monica - I'll never be as cool as someone sporting the pork chop look as I'm unable to grow the facial hair necessary. I don't think my wife would be down with that look anyways.

anyone else see Texas Tech? Yeah, I know it is the "No Defense" Big XII,but still, man they are impressive. And no, the name Bear82 has nothing to do with UA, it is due to a nickname from the wife, since i am a very tall, large human

2:59 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

(Not Tim) I saw the TT game. They looked very impressive. Only 3 sacks on thoer Qb all year and 2 of them today. Harrell didn not have to look off more than 2 receivers. KU isn't that bad on defenase, but TT picked them apart.
If Tubbs is out, I say get Leach. I, for one, would like to see an offensive minded HC at AU. With Tubbs & Dye, it was defense all the way.

BTW, if Tubbs is so defensive minded, why couldn't he and Rhodes stop WVU? Watching them play this year is plain no fun.

If TUbbs, stays, I am still 100% behind turning the O over to Malzahn.

Let the blood letting go for this year and move into the spread for 2009.

Yes, it is simple, but it is crazy enough to work.

West Virgina = Their win over us saved their season ans their coaches season no doubt.

That makes no sense.

mr. sensible,

Tubs isn't in the same category as those other bozos.

My prediction?

Tubs stays.

Kicking him out and paying the $6 million dollars and then spending several million more to bring in a new coach would be a PR nightmare for Auburn...especially in this economy. If you take all EMOTION out of the decision making process and think logically, it makes sense to keep him.

Still, Nall, Knox, and Ensminger have GOT TO GO.

By then, that is just my prediction and opinion---both equally meaningless..

Reynolds, I agree with everything except:

"Still, Nall, Knox, and Ensminger have GOT TO GO."

I just don't see how AU isn't going to get better assistants or a high profile OC to come in here.

10:36 PM

what 1996 bobby bowden quote are you talking about?

10:37 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't see a need for Tuberville to get rid of members of his staff, although I do think we need a spread expert to come in on offense. That guy may want to bring in other coaches, especially a receivers coach. That doesn't necessarily mean any coach has to go. It may mean some re-assigning. For instance, Ensminger coaching the QBs and Knox coaching the inside receivers/tight ends. We shall see.

When I look at this season, we could have easily lost to UT and MSU. This team is that bad. But I don't believe there is a talent issue. It is purely offensive philosophy and the ability of the coaches to coach it up.

From what I have heard of Franklin, he isn't a people person and I get the impression he didn't spend a lot of time coaching the coaches. That is an issue. He was the expert so he should have gotten the offensive staff in line.

10:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

eddie, Mr. Sensible is saying the opposite.

I am not sure what you have seen in the coaching methods of those three, but I don't know enough to criticize their coaching ability. I haven't attended practices. We are attempting to evaluate them based upon team performance when it is a new scheme they are learning. That doesn't mean they are bad coaches.

10:48 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- Your right, I have read it wrong. I still want them gone and I have seen many practices because I was a part of their first team in 1999. Nall is a players coach, but technique is not his strength. Knox is just flat out terrible. Ensminger, i'll admit that I have not seen coach, but tell me how the people has has coached standout. The TE's have been non-existent in the offense since he has been coaching them. Trott had the best game of any TE in a while.

Some people seem to believe that a move has already been worked out and that Muschamp will be the next HC. I don't know if its true or not, but just what I'm reading. Who knows if it is really true.

10:57 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Where are you reading that Eddie? Seems odd but not out of the question. Tubs was wearing Texas colors on Thursday.

10:58 PM

10:59 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Their is one poster on the Bunker that has solid ties within the program somehow and he has been very accurate in the past with what he reports. He is saying that he believes that TPTB have already talked and that he probably has accepted. Interesting, I'd like to know the real story on why he left, whether he saw it as a better opportunity or if he was displeased with how things are handled at Auburn. If he was displeased then I'd wonder why he would want to come back since he'll have other opportunities. I don't think he left simply because he didn't get some tickets to the Peach Bowl, or at least that doesn't make sense to me. One leave because one guy who isn't your boss is a jack ass.

VRGA- I don't have a clue with Muschamp left. I've heard all the reasons, but just now sure. I do know why Chizik left. It was Tuberville. He was sick of working for him, plain and simple. I bet that was a part of Muschamp's decision, but probably not the most part. I will also say that Muschamp would be an idiot to pass up the opportunity if given the chance, and he knows that. He has a chance to make millions at a very reputable school. He knows how the game is played. If he doesn't take this, he is not guarenteed Clemson or UT if it should become open.

11:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Interesting, didn't realize that about Chizik, didn't know people disliked working for Tuberville.

You have to think Clemson would go after Muschamp but I would think UT would go after someone with HC experience. UT is the better job of the three, in my opinion, so they could probably hold out for a proven HC.

The irony is that every good Tuberville coordinator has left him. The one's he has fired have never been worth a flip after the time. Mazzonne was OC at NC State and Ole Miss after he was let go and I'm not sure if he is coaching anywhere any longer. Lovett got a stint at Clemson and I believe he got fired there also. Borges is not coaching anymore. Petrino did leave for the right reasons, to be a HC somewhere. Gibbs went back to NFL as position coach at KC.

11:43 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Let's just say that Tubs gets verbally abusive on game day on the headsets. It gets old and he was tired of it. As for Chizik knowing about jetgate, that is the first time I've heard that. I can say that I know that did not play one bit into why he left Auburn.

You are right, this had nothing to do with chizik leaving though.

Gene is not nearly as arrogant as Bobby was. He was always cocky while he was Auburn and apparently that way every where he has been. Sometimes you need that in your head man. Actually, I think it should be a requirement.

What's with the thing on the coaches arm today?

I saw Saban wearing it and just saw M Stoops as well.

Wassup.

Again..............Butch Davis with his ENTIRE STAFF....excpet Rodney Garner as recruiting coordimator.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I agree Chris. Gardner can coach on the O or D. Just get him back and let him help bring players in. If the Muschamp rumor is correct, that would be a great recruiting tandemn in having Muschamp and Gardner together.

I agree 100% eddie.

rumor?

Really. Have you heard anything?

I'm TOTALLY turned on my Muschamp today after seeing him slap his players around.

I was around a bunch of Bammers at work .... Alabama fans actually ---- and they thought that sh*t was cool and they would love to have that as their coach.

Of course they're happy but jus sayin.......

A coach with friggin FIRE.....Does Tuberville have FIRE?

I just got a lump in my stoach because I though tabout this staff being backj next year.

Whitt Jr was with the packers last I heard.

Smart kid, just not sure I'd trust a word he says.

Cmon zona!!

Would love to have Rodney and tracy back. They would want to also.

Stoops just blew it.

Chris- People who seem to know things believe that Muschamp has been contacted for sure. They would also not be surprised if he hasn't already accepted. With that being said, I don't know if its true, but I believe it to probably be true

One thing for sure is that CTT will not resign under any circumstance. I don't blame him, why would ya if you had $6 million coming your way.

Well, Will does know a lot of coaches. That will be a big help to him in putting together a staff.

eddie.....

If this turn out to be true, I'll never forget this.

If it doesn't, I'll remember it the next recruiting class CTT has that's behind Central Florida and USF.

I'm stuck on the World Series.............PICKED OFF!!!!

A Philly guy was picked off second...tie ball game in the 8th......AND INSTANT REPLAY WOULD HAVE NEGATED THIS WHOLE THING.

I love you eddie.

I hope you're right.

Rodney Garner and Will Mushchamp ROOKS Butch Davis.

I don't understand why baseball brought instant replay in for home runs, but not the real controversial stuff like what you are suggesting. Makes no sense to me.

Did you see the PLAY?!?!?!

Jamie Moyer, a 45 yr old man wnet after a bunt that flipped it with his glove to a 1st baseman that barehanded it but the ump was blocked out.

FOX's guys didn't ONCE mention anything about replay when they talked about:

1 how OUT he was

and

2. What an AMAZING PLAY IT WAS>

That stole a "greatest play in world series history" IMO.

12:23 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I'm happy for Gabe Gross. He is an awesome person, and I was lucky to know him. That guy loved Auburn and was a huge fan before he came. I'm glad Baseball has been good to him and lord knows he has worked hard to get to this point.

12:23 AM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

If you listen to FOX RADIO I'm about to call in and ask why the FOX guys haven't mentioed it.

I'm trying to see that play. I haven't seen it. Dang, no hit for Gabe this trip either.

12:26 AM

I don't want to over-exaggerate but IMO it was a great play.

If TB wins this game and this series it will be HUGE.

What Sportscenter.

After seeing the scores, reading the recaps, and watching the highlights from the remaining SEC opponents this year, I'm fairly sure that Auburn isn't going bowling, but that's okay.

Sooner the coaching staff in place gets to work on the next season, the better.

Starting paying attention to recruiting now fellow Hotties. Who are the playmakers on offense going to be? Are we filling the holes on defense?

2008 has been rough, but the only way to go is up from here.

Jay,

Did you enjoy the Weezer show?

I thought it was fun, a pretty good show. My wife loved it.

I thought Tokyo Police Club was pretty good, but Angels & Airwaves were just ok, and their stage show of pretty much playing in the dark half the show and their singers fake stage presense got a bit old.

One question, where were all the people? We pretty much had an entire section in the upper level to ourselves. I don't know if I've ever been to a big name concert with that many empty seats, especially in a building that holds around 10K.

So Warren,

I just saw you two weeks ago in Atlanta.

When are you going to announce the dates and acts for the Christmas Jam in Asheville this year?
