I was just going through some parts of the Vanderbilt game and saw something interesting.
I didn't realize Auburn's first three plays of the game -- the ones that gained 10+ yards each -- were the exact same call.

We could have had Six different different plays from the Ace and it is simple to run Ace L or R and naked boot leg off the fake L or R to the TE or 10-15 yrd comeback to the WR L or R this could have been put in last week adn not much problem for pratice time!!!!
This is why it is frustrating we lost the game. We had the answer & results w/ ACE and GOT AWAY FROM IT!

JayG, I rewatched the game and they did try it some on the 4th drive, but the yards were getting harder to come by, so CTF went more to the spread. I think CTF sometimes during the 2nd half felt like he HAD to show them that the spread could work (and it didn't). I'm sure he hates it when he sees the Ace package working and his plays not.

ReplyDeleteIs this some sort of abstention that we move it all to a formation where we only have 2 plays? And do we think that's going to fool anybody? Of course it worked 3 plays in a row. It's what we used to do, what we know how to do, and we haven't done it on film this year. But it's not going to fool anybody. Auburn's as easy as pie to defend right now. Stack the box. Oldes trick in the books.

Does he mean it hasn't been a major disaster yet? I think my definition of a major disaster and CTT's are a little different. Maybe I'm the only one that thinks scoring 5 TD's in 4 SEC games is a disaster. Maybe I'm the only one that thinks losing to freakin' Vandy is a disaster.
I think the answer to why they went away from the Ace is pointed out in the breakdown. 10 Ace plays with 9 being running plays. The lone Pass was fumbled. If a Q.B. throws exclusively from the gun it's nearly impossible to learn the 5 to 7 step drop in a week. In the same way Todd is not a threat to run from the gun he's not a threat to pass from the Ace.
ReplyDeleteThat was the big knock on Colt Brennan in last years NFL draft, he played in the shotgun and couldn't get the drop correct.
But how hard is it to install a play action rollout from the ace formation? No 5 to 7 step drop needed, simply roll out and hit the TE coming across the middle or a WR on an out route.

Maybe I'm oversimplifying things here, but it seems like we could have one play "set" where it's the ace formation, play action bootleg and the receivers may have one or two routes to run. Honestly, how long would that take to install? an hour? A week? I really dont know.
did you scarbinsky's article in the Bham news? basiscally had barrett trotters coach saying he loves the spread and it works, and that auburn is not running it right now and that burns and todd are doing terrible jobs of running. He also goes onto say that in time it will work. I have a feeling the spread is here to say. I am going to be all worked up again this week, travel to game and see the same crap..as the past 6 weeks...who is in agreement...today i had to read that the Old Franklin was back...ohhhhh.....ahhhhh...watch out here comes Old Tony, it takes 2 losses for us to get Old Tony...i feel like I am sucked into a pyramid scheme, who wants Amway..

Not those Sunday meetings with Tubs but after a fall practice or even the summer time? Sources are saying that is the problem. THEY DON'T.

Ian's is ok. His is probably the best of the Bama bunch. However, his gets a little too silly at times. I much prefer the format of this one.
ReplyDeleteNow on to football. I must admit that I was very surprised that Tuberville went to the spread last year. I could understand dumping Borges, but to go to the spread is so out of character for Tuberville, IMO. Especially when you consider the fact that Tuberville has owned spread teams in the past.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I think that Auburn has to stick with it at this point, and it looks like they will for the time being. They have a ton of recruits that are geared toward the spread. Oftentimes those type of recruits don't fit into a smash mouth type system. The OL's tend to be a little smaller and much more quick. Same for the RB's. To turn away now would be difficult from a recruiting standpoint.

Auburn offensive coordinator Tony Franklin was relieved of his duties Wednesday halfway through his first season of directing a spread offense that never caught fire.
Head coach Tommy Tuberville will meet with his team at 3:30 to tell them of the dismissal.
Tuberville said he will take a bigger role in plotting the course of the offense. Tuberville said he'll decide in the next day or so who will call the plays in Saturday's game against Arkansas.
Auburn is 104th in the nation in total offense.

ReplyDeleteI'm with you ...the last couple of weeks were painful. I mean how did tubs get past the first conversation with this guy? They are total opposites in offesnive theory.
Call me crazy but I'm disappointed in Auburn. We fire an offensive coordinator after 6 games for losing 2? We don't give the guy even a full year before we judge how bad he is? From the way Franklin talked during his short tenure, he wasn't even given the same freedoms he was allowed at Troy where his offense did work after a full season. Auburn seems to be back to acting the same way they did during Jet Gate. I would have much rather seen the ship sink with the hired guns in place than to blame a seemingly inevitable failure of a season on an offensive coordinator half way through the season. It appears as though Tubbs has already sealed himself the perfect excuse for a failure of a season.

Auburn was Franklin's big chance to prove himself. Who would've ever guessed his BEST game would've been his first?
I seriously doubt Tuberville's inner circle EVER made it easy on him. I sincerely hope Coach Franklin gets a fair shot (can hire all of his own position coaches) at another school.
