Legends Poll: Auburn still not out of it
Hey everyone. Good morning to you. I really needed a good night's sleep and got it last night. Big up to my wife for taking The Daughter to school this morning, thereby clearing out for my final hour of slumber. The last hour makes all the difference.
A MAJOR THANKS: We set at least two HABOTN records yesterday: Most participants in a single campfire and most visitors in a single day. I'm pretty sure we also hit a record for most pageviews in a single day, too, but those calculations aren't completed until 11 a.m. or so.

A semi famous ex Auburn football player that shares a name with a famous TV dog said tofay that Franklin is the workhorse of the offensive staff. Yet he's coaching QBs, WRs, RBs, and OL to a degree. He says it's an absolute mess and he pointed to an analogy somebody laid out in the 'Bunker'.
You hire a man to lead your math department and you give him a bunch of English teachers to support his cause?
I like it.
Franklin needs autonomy and the appropriate help if AU is going spread.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EjuEc2QBw8
Who is a fomer player that shares a name with a famous dog? I give up.
agreed. either you run the d*** spread or you don't. let him run whatever the h*** he wants or cut him loose. this 50/50 crap isn't going to cut it.
i think i've been pretty supportive of the coaching staff up until now but after having to sit through that game saturday night and listening to the player's responses yesterday it's obvious nobody knows what the heck is going on.
i never thought i would taunted by vandy students leaving a game. it's a new low. i don't care if they're undefeated or not. if we have a halfway competent offensive attack we win that game. we don't and we didn't. it's pathetic and inexcusable.
congrats on the record numbers. the HOTTIES are out spreadin' the good word.
phred,
My guess is Benji Rowland.
of course ... as you can see I am really on top of my game today.
Tubs did say CTF was "working harder than anybody." So, why is he having to spend so much time at all the positions?
Why is something that's so easy for high schools and colleges across the country to understand so hard for Auburn?
The answer has got to be that the other coaches aren't onboard or they're just not adaptable.
What other big name school would hire Knox, for example, away from Auburn? Who would hire Ensminger?
Wow, glad someone told me. I was sitting there trying to figure out when Lassie played for us.
Anyway, whoever linked the SMart Football argument from the other day was brilliant.
that is a great piece of literature with great video.
Free Tony or Fire Tony!!! Either one. But Tony running the I sucks.
One more and I'll leave out of here before I get shot.
Butch Davis is a candidate to be Auburn's next HC.
cool beans re the campfire numbers. i guess misery loves company, after all.
Jay,
I have finally recoverd, semi- causiously from the GAME saturday night. i do have one question that still is haunting me, so i ask the HOTTIES for their take....
"Did Vandy ever stop us from running the Ace formation Stretch play we started the game with?"
Keep running it until they stop us, not until we stopped it ourselves!!!!
The problem revolves around 3 people and the relationships between them. Tony Franklin, Chris Todd, and Tommy Tuberville. It is obvious after the Chick Fil A bowl to Todd that Burns would likely be the starter at Auburn the next year. Franklin told him he would be the starter if he came to Auburn. Franklin told the offensive staff that Todd would be the starter...period. No if, ands, or buts. That was the beginning of the end. The majority of the players stand with Burns. Tuberville is allowing Franklin to do whatever he likes.
On a side note, Burns went to Tuberville prior to the Tennessee game and said either you let me play or I'm transfering. Tuberville explained that his actions were not the way things were done in Auburn, and said no. Shortly thereafter, a large amount of the "leaders" on the offense went to Tuberville and said they wanted Burns to start. You all know what happened afterwards...
There are a lot of problems right now that could be fixed easily, and some that can not.
Wrong Awk.
If CTT would let Franklin do whatever he wanted, we would see signs of the spread working by now.
First, Tony Franklin is calling the plays. I don't even want to get into that debacle. Second, you can't tell me that Tuberville was the person who demanded us to stop running the ball and go into the shotgun formation in the second quarter. That would be Franklin who chose to run then chose to spread the field out. It is well known that Tubbie doesn't deal with the offense.
awk-
I'm new around here. Where do you get all your "inside" information? It's not that I'm doubting, but well, you sound pretty definitive in your synopsis.
I have a red phone right next to my desk that is a direct link to the athletic department. Kidding... I have a friend who is directly connected to university, trustees, coaches, and athletes. While I am not saying that 100% of what I said is true, everything he has told me in the past has come to fruition. If not immediately, later down the line when the full story is exposed.
We are ranked 22 in that poll because we are double doo doo.
As an Auburn fan of many years I read but seldom comment on these blogs. I have to voice my opinion. A little background so I am not castigated for --- no idea what’s going on, no football experience etc. I played/coached at the pro level for several years. I have seen this before and Auburn's problems are due to ……MEDDLING.
CTT needs to man up and make a decision as to, YES Spread or NO Spread.
If YES, give CTF the keys and let him install it completely. CTF knows this offense and believe me it WILL work in the SEC. Next he needs to get the Offensive Assistants and jerk a knot in their tails and let them know to either learn and support this offense or look for other employment. The players may be unhappy with it but if they see a united effort and are given consistently progressive coaching they will play, if not they need to hit the road (as at Bama). Not exactly pretty but needs to be done to make this succeed. May not be a pretty year but there is no longer any other way to get it installed.
If NO then make CTF a Co-Coordinator and bring in someone who knows the alternative Offense. CTF may be a “Guru” on the spread but doesn’t have the experience or knowledge to call plays outside of the spread.
I do agree that there needs to be a couple of sets of “under center” plays for special situations and to keep defenses honest but the major thrust should be “spread”
Sorry so long and windy but had to get it off my chest. I will now slip back to “lurker” status and continue to read about my AU Tigers.
JGT, what's the ETA on the next update? my stomach turns with anticipation.
sorry, but this just hit me....
what's the deal with us knocking out starting QB's where the back-ups come in & beat us? totally bewildered.
No way. No naming anybody a co anything that has an entirely different philosophy.
Also, do not believe in forcing the issue at the expense of the players who pledged their duties to Auburn. Yes, I know they get a reward, too. A free education. But a lot of these guys came here because the Tuberville camp has a knack for developing NFL talent.
Bottom line is the idea should never have been decided upon withou a solid plan of deployment. Meddling is an issue and it always has been. Only Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, and Bob Stoops seems to have total reign over their programs. The next guy will have to be one opf those types or you can forget championships at Auburn.
The town needs an enema.
"this town needs an enema"
-Jack Nicholson as the Joker
-BATMAN the movie, (1989)
great quote. one of my favs.
Only a hardcore SOB will take a collegiate program to a national title these days. Look around. Meyer, Carroll, Stoops, Miles, Saban, Tressel.
Tubs stands for too many good things to play in this arena anymore. He's done proving things to people. He's spent his whole life doing that.
He will step down at the end of the season and walk away a winner.
I always have thought that he had designs on the AD position. This season is kind of throwing a kink in those plans though.
Intersting post, Phred. That would not bother me. He's done a lot of good things. He's run it clean. However, he has one piece of hardware, only 2 appearances in ATL, and only two 10 wins seasons.
Crudup... I agree that Tuberville could have done better, but the two ten win season thing is stupid. He won 13 in 2004 and 11 in 2006... not just ten. He's had nine wins three times. I don't understand why ten is the magic number. He also went undefeated, which is something Saban, Meyer, Spurrier, & Les Miles have'nt done. Give the man a little bit of credit.
I just don't see it, Phred.
He has a great contract that gives him tons of protection, he has his professional life designed as he wanted, his program has been good and (likely) will be good.
I don't see him leaving just yet.
I say he leaves around 2012 and gets in broadcasting.
And if I had to pick Auburn's next coach, which won't happen soon, I'd go with Will Muschamp.
The question is: Will he be settled by 2012? Or ... will he ever be settled?
Sorry he had nine wins 4 times
Jay G .. I hear you. We agree on the timing. That would coordinate with HS graduation, would it not. I just thought that is what he had in mind for on down the road. But, maybe broadcasting is it for him. I would enjoy him much more than others (being former coaches like Curry).
Crudup ... it wouldn't bother me either. I think he would be a good mentor for an up-and-comer, kind of in the Dooley mold.
Muschamp as HC?! Lawdy, you just think things are crazy now. We'd all have to wear orange T-shirts that said things like "you ain't hurt!" I bet press conferences would be exciting though.
Paul Rhoads could be an intriguing option down the road. He's seems in line with what Auburn people like: Straightforward, serious about work, doesn't call himself a dumbass ...
OT ... US crude oil now under $89 per barrel. Wholesale gasoline now just over $2 per gallon.
I really hate it for you, Big Oil.
I really, really, really hate it for you.
Yet I'm still paying Tree-Fitty/gal.
Jay G...any guess when/if Franklin will be available for comments?
Meyer does have an undefeated season to his credit.
but, not in a bcs conference (meyer)
Squirrel...who cares about 8 and 9 win seasons? That's what's stupid.
Will Muschamp? No way.
Meyer has hardware of the highest ranking. There's a certain point where the "Auburn thing" is silly. Everybody should have the same goals. Conference titles and ultimately the crown jewel. Politics can only be so involved. So, no tears please.
Also, I don't think Auburn's going to sit around and fall to pieces while Tubs readies himself for retirement. It doesn't work that way. If you have a job you work it. Period.
will muschamp is too emotional on the sidelines to be a head coach in my opinion. I like the guy that doesn't freak no matter what's going on. I think that's franklin's problem now. He gets put in a tough spot, gets flustered, and loses his cool while calling plays.
I don't know what makes you think tubbs isn't working at his job. Tuberville is a damn good football coach and if he leaves we will get worse, there is no doubt in my mind about that.
One more thing on 10 wins...
How many 9 win or less SEC teams played for the conference title in ATL?
Logic, squirrel. Logic.
also just brought myself to rewatch the game... and it is amazing how much weaker chris todd's arm gets after 8-10 throws. If he could maintain the arm strength that he starts a game with, we would be unbelievably better than we are now.
Read the posts entirely, Ron. Nobody said tubs wasn't a good coach.
Nobody said he wasn't doing his job NOW.
I don't think Franklin will be available (for interviews) this week at any point.
did tubbs put the gag on him?
cause i beleive franklin has stated his opinion on that
crudup,
I guess what i was saying is if Tuberville leaves you can chunk 9 win seasons out the window for a while.
I'm in agreement on Rhoads. He fits the mold for sure. Thought that from day one.
Guys, I love tubs. Think he is a great coach and even better man, but to think that auburn couldn't win without him is crazy and insane. Auburn is not one man and certainly not one coach. We have money, support, and facilities. A lot of coaches would beg for that.
Tuberville isn't leaving, so this is a moot point.
He wouldn't leave when things are down a bit. He doesn't think like that. If Auburn went 12-1 or 13-0 or something like that in 2010, well, you might want to keep your eyes open.
He's not tired of this yet.
I hope he's not jay. I would Like him to stay forever. Now Knox and a few others on the other hand...
Also don't Like the meddling in the offense thing. Its never good. Destroys credibility all the way around.
jay
gas in Sherman, TX is 3.04
craziness. whats your prognosticationon the future of gas prices?
REAL CLASSY BARNER!
YOU HAVE NO ARGUMENT.
YOUR TEAM IS GOING IN REVERSE AND THAT CAN'T BE DENIED.
FOR YEARS, YOU ALL HAVE STUCK YOUR NASTY REDNECK FINGERS IN MY FACE FOR THOSE CHEAP WINS WHILE MY TEAM WAS DOWN.
NOW THE WORLD HAS TURNED
IF YOU CAN'T TAKE IT, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DISHED IT SO FREELY
GET READY...THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING
ROLL TIDE!

Guys,
Did I miss something or did we just lose to bama?
Typical bammers, running their mouth before the game. That's all they can do. All they know how to do. Go back to selling ice.
What about Franklin?
Earlier this year, he said he would not work for someone that would not let him talk.
Is this self-imposed then?
What about an update Jay?
yeah I would like to know the scoop as well, even if it means verbally abusing an SID.
bammer ... name the 12. What years and who presented them?
Ron, you're right. If Tubs leaves be prepared for a steep slide for one year. Happens everywhere. There's just no excuse for this year's story. Amazed that all the chemistry, leadership, and champiponship talk turned into this.
But that's what happened in '03, too. We traded places with the arch rival in many ways in a year's time. Attitude. Leadership. Chemistry. Support. It's all upside down right now. Saturday wasn't just a bad game. It was implosion and it had to happen.
Perhaps we should put up a sign that says, "Don't Feed the Trolls."
Keep in mind that those that use the word "classy", usually aren't.
Crudup.. I never said 9 wins were great, but for some reason your stuck on the number 10. I agree that Tubs should have won more conference championships, but you are dismissing the fact that he went undefeated in the SEC. Also Auburn went to the title game in 2000, Arkansas went in 2002, and Tennessee a couple of times with 9 wins. Theres your logic Crudup
J Geezy ... you have now officially arrived. You have crazy bammers on here screaming in all CAPS!
Anonymous 'Neck:
Your TEAM is 6-0. The last time they were 6-0 to start the season? 2006. You know how that one ended. I wouldn't flap those tobacco stuffed lips quite yet.
Bammer ... you didn't answer my question. Bet you can't do it without google, which is probably why you haven't answered yet. You are looking it up right now, aren't you.
i think he's funny
funny like "ha ha" funny, or funny as in queer.
Why do people certain words from a post and make a brash statement that somebody is "stuck" on something?
And, Squirrel, none of those programs WON the conference title with those 9 wins teams. In fact, they were lopside losses signaling down years in the league at least on one side of the conference.
What's up with all the shouting? The appropriate use of capitalization should be learned well before college. Oh, I just answered my own question.
BARNER PHRED
Alabama has 12 "recognized" titles that is claims. 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992. If you look at the Official NCAA record book it also lists championships for the Tide in 1945, 1962, 1966, 1975 & 1977 bringing the total to 17.
nice "wikipedia" work. now name the associations that presented them.
You asked how many "played" in Atlanta in your post, not "won"
i figured he's used we got 12!, recruiting and roll tide... i'm interested to see what else he comes up with
hate to tell you, but you only have 6 recognized by the NCAA. 6, such a nice number.
it appears that salsa shark is being deleted.
You forgot SABAN!!, RM.
He was deleted.
I don't like all the yelling.
I deleted Salsa's silly comments and posts referencing them.
It's just silly.
Salsa, I'm OK with you posting the numbers.
I'm not OK with you calling people BARNERS and all that.
If you want to be civil, that's cool.
If you want to flame, go to an Alabama-centric place and let 'er rip.
Over and under on the bammer's years of college attendance? Perhaps high school years completed (not attended) would yield more bets. Or maybe the over and under on the correct number of letters in the word college.....
no sir, the only ones they recognize are from 61 thru 92. if you study those orgs. you referenced you'll see quite a lot of others for the same years, including AU.
6 is how many you have, which is a lot, and I wish we could say the same.
But the truth is the truth. That was my point.
Congratulations on your 6.
Aight.
I'll keep the hate down...some.
Saban still rules.
Tubs does not.
Just so we are clear.
Got 12?
i'm sorry, but that's funny
no, and neither do you.
it is funny.
Jay G:
Do you think Muschamp burned any bridge he may have had as HC at Auburn when he bolted for Texas? I always thought he would make a good replacement for Tubbs down the road, but I for one would have trouble supporting him after leaving the players he had coming back...
I really don't want to go to a "registration required" situation for comments ...
I don't think Muschamp burned bridges.
He actually was pretty careful with how he made the jump. He took time to personally chat with several Important People before he left, which was noted and seen as a classy move on his part.
G ... did you get any video of Rod yesterday? Also, how can we get a file pic of the Tate freeze frame?
Thanks. I wasn't aware he had talked to folks!
I didn't get Rod yesterday.
I can email that freeze frame if you're so inclined.
This was such a warm place before the tide came in...
email it. I am going to blow it up as an expressive reminder of this wonderful season.
Rod Smith in Rivals video from yesterday ... "Coach and I had a meeting yesterday, and I have been named the starting QB"
that's funny stuff
Jay, would you catch any flak from the coaching staff if you were to ask the players why the offense's problems weren't apparent in offseason practice?
Seems like we are getting much more 'straight talk' from the players as of late.
I wouldn't get any flak from the players or coaches for asking that stuff.
I don't think they could see it during the pre-season. They just figured Todd's arm would be better when it's GO time. Then GO time came and it was still pretty compromised.
Players, as a lot, are pretty good with the straight talk ... regardless of the team's fortunes.
any idea why Franklin is not talking?
Phillip Marshall always has an interesting look at things. His comment yesterday:
When Tuberville apologized to his players for not giving them a chance to win in the second half, that was almost certainly pointed at Franklin. Tuberville doesn't call offensive plays.
...is telling. Phillip usually talks the party line and if this is indeed addressed to Franklin, I would expect to see some serious changes this week.
Franklin not talking? That's a "suggestion" from the head coach.
Hotties,
Did you realize that AU is the most penalized team in the league.
Not in yards but in numbers. 47
Which means they are mostly of the 5 yards stupid mistake variety.
Oh please dont let this place devolve into the typical sports blog. I enjoy this one a lot and dont want to turn it into Bammers coming on here and us asking for verification of their NC's.
There's plenty of folks over at al.com who seem to enjoy that kind of crap. But hey, when you go big time like Jay to the G, this type of stuff happens.
Someone yesterday posted a site that I visited (www.smartfootball.blogspot.com) and it had some very interesting info on the spread and why they thought it wasn't working at AU. If you click on some of the links in the text, you go to another blog where HS coaches discuss this matter and what they see as wrong with the AU situation. It answered a lot of questions for me. Jay, I thought I read where you hit this site. If so, go back and hit the link at 'same thing' and see what other coaches, most are not from our state, say about this situation.
Ba Ba Ba Bird, Bird, Bird is the word.
Jay, give me one solid reason why I should waste my hard earned money on the Pay Per View this weekend. I'm not sure my liver can handle it.
I'm doin' this one on radio, just like back in the day. Might be fun. Might suck a lot. Either way, me and my boy will be having some fun doing something else while we listen.
I'm just hoping it will be on Gameplan so I can watch it when I get back from a wedding.
On Finebaum today, Pat Dye mentioned that he did not include Auburn in his top 25. I found that interesting as well.
He had some good strong comments and basically said, we have to fight our way through this.
Well, my guess is that Auburn's offense will actually work against a defense this athletically challenged.
So that could be a good thing from The Auburn Perspective.
hiphop: I have done my best to eliminate the silly pro-Alabama rhetoric from earlier today. I will continue to do that ... and will wield more power to do so if necessary.
very good 100 comments...
is there any way to listen to the Auburn games online for free? I miss those days. If not, looks like I'll be getting my updates from the campfire.
What kind of attendance is everyone expecting at Jordan Hare on Saturday? If it was on national tv, it might have been pretty sad for an SEC game.
Peter,
You can listen to the games on auburntigers.com. Depending on where you live, you can also watch the game on espn360.com for free.
I have tried espn 360 a few times this year and it is pretty cool.
I would imagine it being free is a great marketing tactic and expect a nominal fee next year.
From the link that Sportsguy referenced earlier:
Quote
Tommy is a great coach. He has done great things at Auburn. More than anything he is great with the media. Almost to the point of brainwash.
Had this been going on at Alabama he would've been outed already. For some reason no one on the Auburn beat will ask the hard questions.
Endquote
Daaaamn, Jay! You're getting called out!
bulldog, its been free a couple of years now. Unfortunately, its only available in select markets. I've been trying to find a workaround for month, but to marginal success (the one had doesn't work anymore).
I'm getting called out?
Well, it was more of a generalized statement toward all AU beat writers, but you're one of those, right?
Are you going to let them say you don't ask the hard questions?
:D
