Comment overspill

I tried. I really did. I pretended to be comfortable with the comment count extending beyond 200, but it's just not happening.

Let's continue our discussion about Tray Blackmon, LG televisions, my future at ESPN, how much we love our canines and everything else here.

BLACKMON UPDATE: Tuberville said after practice that linebacker Tray Blackmon has taken a part-time job to help support his three children and may not return next season.

"He's got to make it for what's best for his family," Tuberville said. ``I think a lot of times when guys get injured they tend to look at the other side: Do I need to keep doing this? He's a football player and I think he'll make a decision based on his future -- and for his family. We'll be supportive of it."

  9. There was a big argument about ESPN on talk radio down here today. Israel Guitierez (not sure if I spelled that right) is gonna be on the Sports Reporters (which I think is the best show on ESPN). Sid Rosenberg, and his pompous self, started trashing people for wanting to use ESPN to further their journalistic careers. Pretty much everyone else disagreed. I heard it discussed on at least three shows today. Strange.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Auburner had a classic thought about UTM. Auburn players are taught their entire careers to not touch a QB (or anyone else) wearing an orange jersey. Therefore, our guys just could not bring themselves to tackle them.

The other plays, their guys just fell down (my thought).

“Nothing But A Bowl Game” (to the tune of Nothing But A Good Time-Poison)

    Hotties listen
    Not a touchdown, can’t win a game
    Against the mediocre SEC teams
Saturday morning gotta play them Dawgs
And listen to the 3 Daves

I’m always cheering, hoping, for a win
But I can’t get a away from the same old same old
I need my team to pull an upset
If they would let me suit up, I sure would play

    Chorus:
Dont need nothin but a bowl game
    To resurrect my season
Aint lookin for nothin but a bowl
And it don’t even have to be a good one

My coach spent some money on the spread offense
    Then he junked in mideseason
He’s says he’s sorry ‘bout the shape we’re in
But Kodi Burns sure enough can run and run

I’m always cheering, hoping, for a win
But I can’t get a away from the same old same old
We need the streak to extend to seven
If I could get on the field, I’d say give it me!

    Chorus:
Dont need nothin but a bowl game
    To resurrect my season
Aint lookin for nothin but a bowl
And it don’t even have to be a good one

You see I raise a toast to all the AU fans
Who’ve suffered through the year with me
If being an Auburn fan is this hard
Maybe I should pull for UAB…NO WAY!

    Chorus:
Dont need nothin but a bowl game
    To resurrect my season
Aint lookin for nothin but a bowl
And it don’t even have to be a good one

  21. LOL Yes, that is a mystery. However, with 10 or 20 years of meaningful, billable analysis I bet we could figure it out.

  28. I think we should all do depressed a favor, just like you have all done for me. Lie. Lie and say we will beat Georgia and Alabama. Lie and say Pat Dye is returning to the sideline. Lie and say we will be in a good bowl game.

By the way, us going to a bowl game scares me. I can see the headlines now "Troy shocks Auburn in pizza bowl". I would prefer not to risk it.

  30. Jay G,

I could use another hand with my radio show up here in Louisville. I need someone to go Kodiak bear hunting and trout fishing with me.

You will be making some serious coin one of these days.

I still think that Auburn will win out. There are plenty of basketball parallels. My 1982 team, Jimmy Valvanos 1983 NC State team. Additionally, my 1996 team won three in a row as an underdog in the tourney.

Something that disturbs me is that in Jay Gs article today, CTT mentions that he took a job with East Carolina and then Jimmy Johnston called him and he took the job with them. My mentor, Coach Wooden, interviewed with two teams while at Indiana State. The two teams were UCLA and Minnesota. He wanted the Minnesota job. However, when they didn't call him at the appointed time of 7pm, he told UCLA when they called him that he would accept that job. Later that night Minnesota called him and explained that the telephone lines were down due to a snow storm. He told them that he had already accepted the UCLA job. He later stated that that he wanted the Minnesota job because it was a better situation and paid better, but he could not think of an honorable way of getting out of the UCLA job. Just a random thought on how coaching has changed.

  33. Tuberville said Blackmon is still going to class, but ``he wanted to get a part-time job because he's got some kids. That's what he needed to do. I'm sure he'll make his decision after the first of the year what he wants to do -- whether he'll stay in school or whether he's going to stay. That's a personal decision for him.

``He's got to make it for what's best for his family. I think a lot of times when guys get injured they tend to look at the other side: `Do I need to keep doing this?' But he's a football player, and I think he'll make a decision based on his future, and for his family. We'll be supportive of it.''

I'm so glad someone else gets the in-law drama! I don't remember signing up for any of this. How about Monica getting all the love on the local talk shows? Props to Monica.
AU will miss Trey Blackmon (the little ball of hate).

    ReplyDelete
  37. ESPN? Kind of a big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous6:57 PM

    I feel you MDaniel.

I invite all Hotties to call the show Saturday and either praise Monica or throw he under the bus.

    ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. 3 Kids? How old is he, 21?
I mean, It's good he's trying to provide for his kids and all, but if he tries to be drafted this year, it won't be very high at all. If he waits another year and gets a big NFL deal his Senior year, he can get his kids real cars instead of toy ones.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Denny, I'm looking forward to that serious coin. Yes sir. I'd love some.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I just don't see a big NFL deal happening.

A lot of guys can hit like Blackmon. Most of them are 6-1 or bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I must have misread where it said he had 3.

I doubt he's going to be a high pick this year or even if he comes back next year. He's just too small and not good enough in coverage to play LB in the NFL.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Personally, I think there is a distinct possibility that Blackmon would go undrafted. His career at Auburn has been way to inconsistent. He really needs another year.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm not sure another year would help. Seriously. He's a safety with no feel for the passing game.

    ReplyDelete
  45. He needs another year, 3 inches in height and better coverage skills.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And, look, I'm no hater.

The maturity he gained from 2005-08 ... was remarkable.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Mr. S- If Hotties call your show that have to throw her under the bus, or they wouldn't be true Hotties.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonymous7:05 PM

    Mr. S,
It's like the blog has intergrated itself on to the talk radio scene around here. It's actually kind of cool, when i can't look at my computer I can listen to the radio and get some idea of what the HOTTIES are talking about.
    Jay-G,
My radio did the same thing and I think ultimately it will be for the better. My wife gets Sirius and my son gets XM and my son was bummed he wasn't getting the all AC/DC channel anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  49. So, anyone know if Lectron Williams has any eligibility left?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Mr. S- For those of us driving to the game, is it ok to call in not knowing what the heck you are going to be talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Anonymous7:07 PM

    Jay-G
I hear that is is a mean Bleep-to be-bleep! Do you not see that in practice!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, if you do like me, become a Hall of Fame coach and then get a $7million dollar incentive to retire. Serious coin. Also, never turn down a chance for an endorsement. Such Brown Brothers Cadillac, or John E's, Furniture Showrooms, etc. Those really help alot. When I used to drive around in my complimentary Cadillac from Brown Brothers to eat my complimentary meals at John E's, well the coin just started adding up.

    ReplyDelete
  53. No, but I think Derrick Graves & Mayo Sowell are going to each get a 6th year of eligiblity and come back and play LB in Tray's place.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Jay is definitely too cool for those ESPN hacks, he needs to get a job at yahoo sports so he can expose some major scandals like the Reggie Bush / USC Scandal that nobody cares to investigate, especially the NCAA.

By the way, did anyone see where the NCAA let Florida State reschedule the Maryland this game to allow a player, Rolle, to have an Rhodes Scholarship Interview in Alabama on Saturday? They are also letting a private plane fly Rolle from to and from Alabama to Maryland for the game. I was glad to see the NCAA allow that.

  64. mdaniel -- maybe my radio is screwy, but I get AC/DC radio at the Boneyard right now. I'm on Sirius. Are you saying your son can't get Boneyard on XM? I thought all the music channels were merged.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Anonymous8:43 PM

    I can see that now.

Eric Ramsey - currently working as an agent for the CIA

Brian Robinson - still waiting to be drafted

Brent Fullwood - Security Guard, Wal-Mart in Azusa, California

    ReplyDelete
  101. Who ended up being better? Vincent or Allen?

    ReplyDelete
  102. JGT,
I will get the rumor mill going first thing tomorrow morning.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Jay G,
So, if Blackmon never had the measurables for the NFL nor the coverage skills, why was he so hyped coming out of high school?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Jay or any hotties. If little ball of hate has a broke hand what kind of job can he do? I don't know his skill set but I am guessing some sort of blue collar job. Which you usually need both hands .

    ReplyDelete
  107. jhag,
i just checked the Gameday website. I guess they're really at FAMU. Last year I remnember they went to a game with small schools too, so maybe they are doing one small-school game per year now?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Anonymous9:24 PM

    go rattlers

    ReplyDelete
  109. I would think that it depends on where the hand is broken, he could be in a velcro splint. Does anyone know what part of the hand is broken?

    ReplyDelete
  110. He can be like Stephen Hawkings the Astrophysicist

    ReplyDelete
  111. Tray Blackmon - office linebacker. I hear Colonial Banks productivity is up 100%.

    Try this link for Tray.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU1jra7RKCQ

I don't know how to do professional linkies.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Blackmon was a terror in high school. His team allowed him to blitz all the time. That helped him generate some incredible hits and the hype was on.

The thought was that he'd mature, I guess you'd say, in college ball. I never saw much improvement. He's still pretty good as a run-stopper. He'll blow a man up. As far as being a complete player -- which is what Rhoads' system needs there -- Blackmon just isn't The One.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Jay he never did add much weight or did he. I may be the minority here but I don't think Bynes is the answer either. Seems a step slow for Sec ball.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Bynes is a very good SEC LB. 70 snaps a game will make anybody look a step slow.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Alan Evans-retired from BF Goodrich tire manufacturing and last I knew had a small restaurant. Still a big AU fan and his son plays for the Auburn 9th grade team I believe. He is a good looking prospect for down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  116. The only game he looked slow in was the West Va game. Noel Devine and Pat White make a lot of people looks slow.

    So much for SEC speed.

    ReplyDelete
  117. You are probably right Cory. 70 snaps a game is 30 to many.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Talking about LB's I don't think Chris Evans gets enough credit. He filled in for TB last year and did great in the middle. To me he seems like our fastest LB.

    ReplyDelete
  119. New to the community. Anyone figure out why UT Martin waited till the signals were called AFTER the freeze play to set their defense? Ask Tony F.

    ReplyDelete
  120. 2nd Jay- Are you implying something?

If we are doing a segment on former players and where they are now, I want the Lionel James update.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Anonymous6:59 AM

    LOL Eddie,

I can guarantee you that Lil' Train is not a chauffeur....

Rumor has it that he and Snake Stabler are on tour together.

    ReplyDelete
  122. FSJ- I would have never in my wildest dreams thought I would see Lil Train go down this path. He was the TE coach at Aubrn while I was there and he was a great guy. Something in his life just must have flipped to lead him to this point.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Anonymous7:11 AM

I'm sure he's still a great guy. Every person I know that has ever spoken to Stabler says he's a helluva guy too. They both just have a problem. Maybe they will get the help they need.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Anonymous7:38 AM

why's doesn't tubs try to convine the players to stay? This is 3rd big time player we've lost this year... DeRon, ramsey, now tray?

    ReplyDelete
  125. jhag- According to Tubs, we haven't lost him yet, but I bet the odds is not good in his comeback. Tray has had his issues while at Auburn and if its not in the deck of cards for Tray to return, then that is the case. I don't hold Tubs repsonsible in any of this.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Eltoro will hopefully be here next year to replace Blackmon...another undersized gut who can't cover the pass.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I mean guy, not gut

    ReplyDelete
  128. Undersized gut is the problem with ou O-line

    ReplyDelete
  129. Seeker- OL was designed and trained for endurance not power. We never played at the pace that was talked about. The Franklin hire is one of the biggest blunders of any Auburn Coach or any coach that I have ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Jay, Blackmon has been a terror at Auburn when healthy. Why not put him as a DE next year. Blitz only. If they run, he stops it, if the pass he blitzes. Sounds simple enough.

    ReplyDelete
  131. t. blackmon will not be back.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I also don't think Tray will be back.

Josh Bynes is a better overall player. I don't think he's fast, per se, but the point about playing 70 snaps is a good one. You can't expect him to be awesome from snap 50 on.

Blackmon is 5-10 or 5-11. He weighs 220 pounds. Do you think that sounds like an SEC defensive end? Auburn asks its weak-side guy to fall back into coverage somewhat often. Blackmon is a liability in that manner.

    ReplyDelete
  133. If a team sees Blackman line up at DE, they will change the play, even in passing situations and run the ball right at him. Any SEC tackle should be able to dominate him at the point of impact.

It would be much like what Wisconsin did running straight at Stanley McClover.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Blackmon would have made a pretty good fullback I think. Just run and hit.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Strange that one of the rare 5 star players we get is one that has had off field issues and is one who the scouts should have see was too small to play the position as well as they were predicting.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Travis Williams wasn't any bigger and we seemed a little more than OK on defense with him. Our thing is undersized. fast linebackers. I don't think his size is what hurt him, I think he had other issues.

  137. Jay:

Outside of the new basketball arena at Auburn (which should be very nice indeed), what is the next thing Auburn will be working on facility wise? Will it be an indoor facility or will the stadium be expanded?

The reason I ask is because I noticed that Ian has an article this morning about a BOT meeting that should give preliminary approval for Alabama to expand Bryant-Denny-Tuberville Stadium again.

I was just wondering what is next on Auburn's agenda.

Alabama was stupid to remodel the basketball facility instead or building a new one, IMO.

The upside of the Blackmon thing is that I think it makes it pretty obvious that Tubs is running a clean program. No way this situation comes up if Tray is getting checks from rogue boosters.

  139. The hotties are awfully quiet this morning.

  140. Travis Williams played in the middle and had a little more height on him. I believe he was 6'1"

Antarrious Williams was closer to Blackmon's height, but could play in coverage much better than Tray.

  141. Blackmon at fullback does sound like a good idea

  142. the calm before the storm Monica......

i'll tell ya, this has been the most blah Georgia week i can remember. i'll be there saturday but it hasn't really sunk in yet. heck, that may be a good thing.

  143. I remember seeing Travis Williams in street clothes in person, and I was like, "Are you kidding me? This guy plays middle linebacker in the SEC?" I don't know, maybe he was a legit 6" 1'. He certainly wasn't as thick as Blackmon. Either way, he got the job done, and if he had the physical tools, I know Blackmon does.

  144. I'm all about the shirts getting done. If someone is willing to do some sick graphic design work, I'll handle the shirt order and manual labor involved. Jay, feel free to email me any suggestions and/or details that will be crucial to making this happen.

  146. I'm right there with ya, Scottie. It so doesn't feel like ANY game is this weekend much less the GA game. This has been the longest season ever IMO. We'll survive.

Good thing I made my own excitement this morning cuz the hotties had a slow one!

  147. What'd you do, Monica? You didn't set something on fire, did you? That's exciting but it is also bad.

height on a linebacker is overrated. I used to run into Takeo Spikes at Arby's and he was maybe 6 foot tall. He was all solid rock muscle though and had a neck like a bull. And he enjoyed the Arby's 5 for 5 as did I. Nothing like downing 5 Arby's beef n cheddars and then trying to sit through a poli-sci u102 or whatever course.

  150. I was reading up about UGA a bit. It seems that UGA's defense sucks and they have a great offense. Since our defense has been good and our offense sucks, it could be the perfect matchup.

  152. are we starting a new thread before round table comes on? You know we always have a lot to say about that!

  153. FSJ- The next thing on Auburn's wish list for facilities improvement would be a 100 yard indoor facility. Tubs has lobbied for it already and I believe it will be agreed to whether he is here or not.

As far as everyone being quiet this week, it is just that. All my Georgia fans are being very quiet also. They believe the year is over with since they lost to Florida. There is definitely not that passion that normally goes with this week.

  154. Michael - You hit it on the head exactly.

Faker - Resisting the urge to be a smartie? There's a first.

    WEG - good idea

  155. Jay, no it doesn't sound like a DE, but as far as Tray is concerned, he could just be a passing down DE and create all kind of havoc.

Hate to hear he is not coming back. Maybe Canada Ball for pay is in his future. Hope he finds a home.

  156. There isn't anything approved yet as far as facilities although they are doing some remodling in the athlectic building.

  157. Kristina- The athletic complex needed it badly. It was a place that was stuck in the 80's if you ask me, especially the locker rooms.

  158. For me this is always a big week instead of Bama....I grew up in Ga and have lots of Ga fans in my family...i am the outcast much like in the state of alabama
my dad played for Ga a year before going to the Citadel in the late 40's and I also had an uncle on the board of regents with lots of cousin and nieces and nephew there.
I was the only one in the state of Alabama to vote for the 2005 GA game at the al.com I was there and it was awesome but riding back to Atlanta afterwards was very quiet with a bunch of Ga fans

  161. Kristina- I know they did an overhaul of the locker rooms and training area. Not sure on the rest. I'm sure the equipment room got remodelled too.

  165. Hopefully this is a week where some things sink in and we can execute some plays and make some first downs to keep the dogs off the field. Us winning the time of posession in the next two games is paramount in having a fighting chance in either or both. Special teams help would be appreciated as well.
