Mercer @ AU (men)

Hey everyone. It's almost time for BASKETBALL ACTION on the Plains.

HALFTIME STATS:
Rebounds ... Mercer 22 (7 off.); Auburn 8 (1 off.)

Assist/turnover ratio ... Mercer 8/7; Auburn 9/3

HALFTIME
Mercer leads, 44-40. Auburn let James Florence get away. He scored 13 points during the final four minutes of the half. Most of those were created on the fly. Auburn scored on each of its last six possessions of the half, so things are working there.

I'll update with stats when I get them.

FOURTH TO @ 3:34:
Game tied at 30. Auburn is giving up too many offensive rebounds. That's weird to me because the Tigers have significantly more size. Both teams have lost their offensive momentum.

@6:46: Waller hits a three and now has 13 points.

THIRD TO @ 7:47:
Mercer leads, 22-20. Auburn adjusted to that Mercer stuff. They're not cutting off the passes, but they're loading up down low and forcing the Bears to take contested shots. It's not working for them. Auburn offense: Waller hit a three and two technical FTs. Mercer coach was called for a technical foul after arguing a call too feverishly.

SECOND TO @ 11:28:
Mercer ahead, 21-12. The Bears are passing very well and getting plenty of what I'd call "system baskets." I'm talking about give-and-gos. Auburn isn't adjusting. The Tigers seem a little disheveled on offense, but not clueless. Reed made a really nice pass to K. Barber for a lay-up just before the time out.

@14:34: Frankie Sullivan hits the first shot of his career; a 3-pointer.

FIRST TO @ 15:57
Mercer ahead, 8-4. Both teams still feeling each other out. Auburn defending with a man scheme; Mercer going with the zone. It's amazing that Dewayne Reed ever gets the green light. He has an awful shot.

It's Auburn (1-0) vs. Mercer (2-0)

AUBURN LINEUP:
PG -- Tez Robertson
SG -- Tay Waller
SF -- Lucas Hargrove
PF -- Vot Barber
F/C -- Johnnie Lett

  3. If I lived close, I would probably go to a lot of games. I love basketball. When I grew in Chattanooga, I followed UTC all the time and went to almost all the games. Great times, and being at Auburn when we were pretty darn good was awesome.

Thanks for the update, Jay G & Cory.

I was afraid of that. I had the dentist thing here this afternoon or else I would have stayed around for it.

  12. I hope the new arena leads to bigger crowds.

  36. Does Lebo even coach Defense? I've been following Lebo since he was at UTC and he does not preach defense. That seems to be for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So where is the halftime campfire? :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow, they still do the little kid jersey/pants/shoe race. Love this feed.

I think it's safe to say AU & UofAL Men's BBall teams will not be the cream of the crop in the SEC this year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anybody know how South Alabama is this year in B-ball. I believe they were the best in the state last year.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous8:05 PM

I wouldn't throw in Auburn's chips yet. There's a lot of new blood there that needs to feel things out and find some chemistry. It's early. Vot needs the ball more on teams like this.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That rebounding performance ... Auburn should be embarrassed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anonymous8:08 PM

I'm not sure Lebo is preaching that, Jay. The Hotties are correct. Defense under Lebo is not what it was under Ellis. But I'm hoping there's a leader in there that can understand the obvious.

That's my bone with Lebo. Well, there's two. I don't see him as a true leader and he's not much of a recruiter either.

  44. Anonymous8:08 PM

    Jay-G,
Does AU look like a formidable Opponent? Certainly ALA was caught on a bad day? Does the team look like they COULD be good?

    ReplyDelete
  45. i'm stunned on the rebounds as well. embarrassing.

  46. Anonymous8:09 PM

    Mercer 22 (7 off.); Auburn 8 (1 off.)

    For real.

    I mean - dang.

    That's anemic.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I would like to know how many games we were out rebounded since Lebo was here. It seems like that is a constant theme also, with lack of defense.

  48. Anonymous8:13 PM

Fishback just said Mercer is the bigger, stronger team?

    Jay?

Just to change subjects for a min.
I think C.Mich is going to beat Ball State. I realize that is not a big deal but I've watch'ed Ball State The last 3 Tues. or Wed. and it's been fun.

  50. Good job on taking the lead after being down 7.

You know, this whole getting our heads handed to us in major sports is starting to really suck.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Rebounding is about desire and work. Jay, I get the feeling from your posts that the baskets are coming easier for Mercer than Auburn. What is the turnover situation for both teams. Is Mercer trying to create tempo, or are they taking what Auburn gives them. At 44-40, it sounds like an uptempo game that is benefiting Mercer.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I started a second-half thread.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Not only bigger stronger, etc, but I would say better coached or they have better "basketball" players
