Derek Dooley speaks

Hey everyone. Sorry for the delay. I had daddy duty for a bit.

Everyone's favorite Louisiana Tech football coach has amended his earlier statement -- the one that was a week old -- and now acknowledges meeting with Jay Jacobs. Both men were in New York City today for the College Football Hall of Fame festivities.

Here is Dooley's statement:
“Obviously, representatives from Auburn spoke with many people around the annual National Football Foundation event. I was one of the many but any further comment on this matter would be inappropriate at this time.”

MY VIEW: Another courtesy interview.

Powers coverage of Julio was exactly what I was thinking of, Jet.

New page, let's keep this discussion rolling.

Blogger Seanzie said...

Bottom line, the overpursuit of our safeties gave up a TD NOT Powers' coverage of JJ on third down. CPR defense makes them run an extra play. In the pros, DCs run that strategy all the time.

10:39 AM
Blogger Monica said...

If you give the kid the choice how far off top lay do we need a coach at all?

10:39 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have no problem with Powers playing off. Powers is a hitter and reacts quickly.

10:39 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Maybe it wasn't CPR defense, could have been with the Titan's defensive backs. It all is a blur at this point.

10:40 AM
Blogger ron mexico said...

Paul Rhoads' defense is play boring base defense until the other team's offense screws up and consistently allow the other team's running back to go over 100 yards.... not a good DC to me, muschamp was much better

10:40 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I know we were injured, but there is no excuse to giving up back to back games with 200 yard rushers.

We have too much talent on that side of the ball to give up that kind of yardage rushing even with a few injuries.

Plus, over the years with Tub always going for speed on D, cutbacks kill us because everyone over pursues the football. Plus physical teams would run right at our undersized DE's.

Speed kills, sometimes it kills itself.

10:40 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Monica, what does a specific scheme have to do with whether we need a coach. I don't get your point.

10:40 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Playing off the WR does have its advantages...otherwise no DC would ever have their guys doing that.

10:40 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

On a 3rd and 11, Powers playing that far off allowed the 1st down. Had he been playing tight, Wilson would have had to look somewhere else.

10:41 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

RK, when your offense can't keep the ball in the second half, and the defense plays two thirds of the time...yard will be given up. It's just a matter of time. That's why you need all three phases to be solid to have a great team. Three and Out is what killed our defense, not CPR and his strategy.

10:42 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

RK, if JJ beats JP off the line, which he very well may, it's a go route at that point with Zac Etheridge the only thing in coverage...that could be disaster waiting to happen.

10:42 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Steve, I guess we'll just disagree on about everything. It's OK ... you seem like a good dude.

I am tickled pink with coordinators that want to advance in life.

10:43 AM
Blogger ron mexico said...

3rd and 8 giving a 10 yard cushion... what are the advantages of that? not giving up a touchdown?

10:43 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

All I can say is that we made Jarrett Lee look like a future all SEC QB this year.

Nobody else did that.

10:44 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have no problem with either defenses. We did give up a huge number of rushing yards in some games, but that was clearly due to a defense that was tired and beat up. The teams that got the most rushing yards were the ones with the small fast runningbacks.

As for Coffee and Alabama, we did good at times, but Bama has an outstanding running game. It is the chief reason they made the SECCG.

10:44 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well Ron, there are a couple things that can happen, if the DB reacts and closes he can jarr the ball loose with a hit, if the ball is late, it can be a pick or a defended pass. They just executed better on that one play.

10:44 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I mean it's great talking X's and O's and defensive strategy folks, but bottom line is CPR is gone. If CWM came in, he'd being a defensive coordinator that shares his thought process. Who do you think he would bring in to coach defense, that is, if he's the hire?

10:47 AM
Blogger ron mexico said...

jar the ball loose?

It's julio jones the most physical receiver in the SEC he'd have been lucky to bring him down by himself.

10:48 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Is Paul Rhoads definitely gone? If so, that is another huge hit to this football team. I was hoping we would get an offensive minded head coach to get with Rhoads defense. If we can do that, we could contend for the west title this coming season.

10:49 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Ron, the kid is a freshman, he's not the MOST physical WR in the SEC. Maybe in your opinion, but I believe Powers with a head of steam could knock the stuffing out of anyone.

10:49 AM
Blogger ron mexico said...

i don't know probably someone that was on him and saban's staff at lsu.

10:50 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

ron, powers is a hitter. I don't think there is anyone he can't bring down.

10:50 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Wish I could keep reading this! It's a good discussion, but I have a very exciting board meeting to attend. gack!

10:50 AM
Blogger ron mexico said...

"Ron, the kid is a freshman, he's not the MOST physical WR in the SEC"

seriously?

10:51 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

That brings up my favorite play of the Iron Bowl, where we bounce off JPW instead of getting a sack.

10:51 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Julio Jones may be the most physical WR in the SEC. Freshman or not, the kid is a monster at wide receiver.

10:52 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Ron, I'm being serious. I've seen DB's crush bigger folks than Julio Jones. If he's running that out pattern and a DB has a head start, it doesn't take much to knock him down. I promise you that.

10:52 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Our offense hurt our defense, no doubt about that. However there were plenty of times our D just didn't do its job.

We made Mackenzie Adams and Jarrett Lee look like good SEC QB's.

As far as the playing soft. With 3rd and long and only up 3-0, Alabama wasn't about to go deep. They just wanted the 1st down. If Powers jacks him at the line, it takes away the deep throw.

10:53 AM
Blogger ron mexico said...

thank you for being reasonable steve julio jones is the most physical receiver that the SEC has seen since probably michael clayton or josh reed.

10:54 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Alright I'm done talking about this, because frankly I'm bored. Everyone apparently has their idea on who should have played how or why. Someone please change the subjec.t

10:54 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Every step Julio takes off the line of scrimmage is poison for the defense. We can he's the strongest, or he's not the strongest.

I'll say this ... we should paid whatever to get him ... I mean, should have recruited him harder. He's better at this point than any WR I've seen in these parts. He reminds me of Lawyer Tillman, only better.

Soon enough, he'll be in the Randy Moss, T.O. zone.

10:55 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

No doubt JJ is a rare talent. But he's not superman by any strech, at least not yet. But even the best WR's in the NFL get decked from time to time by smaller DB's. Just sayin'.

10:56 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jet, Tillman is a very good comparison with Jones. I hadn't thought about it, but they are similar.

10:56 AM
Blogger michael said...

Julio won't be a Randy Moss or a TO. They are both much faster than him. He will be more of a Keyshawn. Maybe even a Mike Williams.

But he is quite stout for a college freshman, that's fo sure.

10:58 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Powers can deck anyone. I have no doubt about that. Julio is just one of the tougher challenges. Both will likely play on Sundays, although Powers may be limited by his size.

10:58 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

re: Josh Reed

If you are talking physical by meaning pusing off on every play, then yes he was physical.

10:58 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Gang, it's been fun, but I've got to get some lunch, everyone play nice while I'm gone, oh and Monica, tell them to hold up the presser until I get back also.

10:59 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Julio and A.J. Green will be buying their mamas nice houses really soon, especially if you let them run 3-5 steps off the line without a greeting card, welcoming committee, or an ulna to the throat.

Just sayin'

the TULSA coach, really? They are just waisting time. They are stalling for something, i just hope they don't wait until after the bowls are over. That doesn't give us much time before signing day.

how are the assistant coaches still recruiting? What if the new head coach doesn't want to pursue some off the kids that are committed? Is this normal?

Ron,

I've never heard of that, but I assume that most of them are trying to impress someone in hopes they will get brought on with the new coach.

BCS ANNOUNCES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II !

US Ranked 4th

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

” Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland , France , Norway , Sweden , Denmark , Belgium and the Netherlands . Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work—including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule—our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories— Japan and Germany . The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by head-to-head contests—they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event.”

German Chancellor Adolph Hitler said “Yes, we lost to the US ; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ‘style points’ to enhance Germany ‘s rankings. Hitler protested “Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces.”

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented ” France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2.”

Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines .

The thing that has really bothered my about the Big 12 mess is that Oklahoma once again got the best possible outcome. They were pounded by K-State in the Big 12 Champ. game in 2003 but were still ranked #1 by the BCS. They were the #2 team over us in 2004. Then this year, they get beat by Texas and still ended up #1.

That is 3 times in 6 years that a BCS controversy involving OU went in their favor. Also, each time, they were ranked #1 by the computers. I hope they get destroyed in the MNC game for the 3rd time.

And yes, I am still very bitter about 2004 and no, I will not ever get over it.

Ron, a new coach will only have a reasonable shot at recruiting players we are already recruiting or that he may have been recruiting at his previous position. Recruiting isn't something that happens over a month or two. These days they are even approaching some kids while they are in the 10th grade. Recruiting has become incredible.
