Fisher's "statement"
"FSU's Fisher, successor to Bowden, claims no contact with Auburn"
BOTTOM LINE: This statement isn't very strong.
"Auburn has not contacted me or my agent and we have not contacted them," Fisher told ESPN.com. "I'm very happy at Florida State. I'm very content at Florida State and I'm happy to be here."
BOTTOM LINE: This statement isn't very strong.

Comeon Jay...anyone want to do 1000 again?
that was obnoxious
I think its being long means AU is really considering him.
Maybe already hired him.
Haha, I think Jay's gonna want you to delete that, but we get your point.
okay chris apparently i missed the whole article I was only able to read down to the jimbo thing. What I would read into the length of the article is that Gill has been the first to emerge as an official candidate.
Maybe some kind of announcment will be made Monday.
I think the fact that he has 15 wins and way more losses means that Auburn is going to pass on him.
Yes, Faker, Monnie. That was back when I was young and sweet and we wrote our names on everything with colored paint pens with little circles on the end.
You're officially Monnie on here.
al.com has the Huntsville paper, the B'ham paper and the Mobile paper's beat writers.
The Bammer'ham's beat writer wrote and freakin BIO on Gill.
That's the ONLY guy who's had that done.
Now, is it Turner Gill....and if so, was he in their sights weeks ago and some would have you think??
See, Barkley, that's why you're my favorite. Don't tell the others.
Monica -- is it pronounced like the song?
"moan'ey Moan'ey" ??
I'm interested to see what Jay's heard that made him put Muschamp back in the picture.
No, like Donnie.
Biscuit- Go look at Buffalo's records over the last several years. He had done the equivalent of Spurrier winning the ACC at Duke.
Mon, I heard that Barkley was your favorite. Do you care to comment?
Ok -- thanks donnie --- oh oh .........monnie.
Please refer all questions to my agent, Jimmy Sexton.
Barkley- That was the name that was floated around right before the Gill stuff came out. I feel that Gill has the best shot, but Muschamp is still right there in the thick of things. Apparently several of TPTB are still very high on Muschamp.
I wonder how this search firm BS thing is comming along?
TD by Choke-lahoma replay just showed you the importance of pressure.
WR ran 4 routes.
No new thread right now.
I have a lot of SEC stuff to write.
I'm counting on you all to keep it HOT right now.
Actually Chris it's pronounced like Money...Eddie Money..
Money
Easy, Eddie...
I've already said that I would have Gill on my list. I just don't know what to think of the guy. I like him for way more than I dislike him for, but I truly wonder if he's the kind of guy that will lead AU to National Championships.
We're good, Jay. Do the voodoo that you do so well.
Rece Davis sounds depressed doing his in game updates.
Wonder why....
I'm not upset in the least. I really enjoy these types of back and forth. I hope you do also.
Seeing Pat Forde, Mizzou graduate, watch his Mizzou Tigers get throttled is sad in a way.
He had such high hopes ...
Fine Jay, were going to do 1K posts now. The fact that you're working so closely with Bama, is like you've been told by your boss to cheat on your wife and she knows and is wondering if to be cool with it...
Is it me or is OK a machine?
All right all, let's go to chatroll to continue the discussion.
Jay -- Make sure to mention to the Bammers to not be so worried.
Heck, they came in second.
But don't take the Utah loss coming so hard. Its doesn't mean anything.
Don't feel like the year in the SEC, which Vandy had 8 wins in, was done with mirrors.
THEY"RE fuhhhhhhhh-reakin back!
oh look. TD with an orange getting hurled.
wow Eddie Money and his wings
good times
camp it up
campfire you say chris?
I'm down - but not an experert
and a little drunk
Guys, has AU not even asked Butch Davis or what?
Not even a "no thank you" ??
what?
I think Butch Davis keeps turning us down.
Orange looks best on TV
Jay,
As you well know, I am not a Pat Forde fan.
On the topic of coordinators I wonder if OU's Defensive Coordinator/Associate Coach, Brent Venabales, is worth a look?
Fisher's statement may not have been strong, but FSU's was. They threatened to sue if we even talked to him.
So, just to completely ignore the current topic, should the Rose Bowl determine the national championship? I think it would be just as valid as the BCSBSNCG. Folks, just say no to the BCSBSNC. If they turn the 8 teams that play in a BCS game into a playoff, I think we would have a national champ. Currently all we have is a well organized circle jerk.
Venables?
Why doesn't the OC Wilson get some love? They are sick on offense.
I would prefer out next OC to be an offensively minded coach, although I don't consider it a must have.
I am unsure of why people think that being a good coordinator makes for being a good head coach. They are very different jobs.
I just penned a column praising the Tide for their work this season.
Saban has done one hell of a job. That's just how it is.
No doubt about that Jay. As FSJ said, if you said BAMA would be 12-1 this year, you need your head examined.
You're so right JG--they really don't have near the talent that UF does.
Saban had them kicking people's butts this year.
$100 hand shakes will do wonders. Just kidding he is an elite coach. Just remember he doesn't have a buy out, I think he would be a good fit at Auburn. Nevermind a crazy bammer would shoot him dead.
In other news . . .
AU Basketball (4-4) wins 78-50 today to end a 3-game losing streak.
OK, back to Bama-hating and Gill-lovin'.
"Seems to me like Gill is a better fit at an MSU, a Syracuse, a Washington ... where he can learn without enormous pressure.
Auburn = enormous pressure."
Jay, I disagree. He's had assistant coaching experience in programs with tremendous pressure.
Jim Tressel (Youngstown State)and Urban Meyer (BG, Utah) both had their first BCS conference jobs at places where the pressure would be much greater than Auburn.
Ok I read the Mile long bio over at AL.com and I call me a convert. I had my reservations about Mr. Gill, but no longer! - He is the "logical" choice.
Spock Out-
gill cried.
I'd like for us to wear white! It would be different, and every game would be a white out. Plus white with orange and blue trim looks cool.
BTW, Jay, I also disagree on the pressure thing. If one can play quarterback at Nebraska well enough to finish 4th in the Heisman voting one can handle pressure. He seems to have a world of self confidence.
yes, that is what I was thinking.
Considering the time Gill spent at Nebraska both as a QB and as an assistant, I'd imagine he knows what pressure and white-hot spotlight is like.
My main concern about Mr. Gill is what kind of staff he could assemble for SEC play and secondly - a sudden return home to "momma" in the event he were to achieve the level of sucess we are looking for......
Jay,
Just read your column online about Alabama.
You have a gift. I don't know if you are interested in being a columnist, but the Advertiser should consider offering you that role.
Wake up Hotties! We (FSJ excluded) have got to find a coach. We're burning daylight.
Dude,
I've been up since 4AM.
Can't sleep. Dangit.
FSJ- I think it's called "clinical depression". At least that's what the doctor told me last Sunday ;-)
Clinical depression...LOL
Actually, this has little to do with the game. Certainly when in the position we were in I wanted to win, but.....
I realize that we overachieved. We had the lead with 10 minutes to go and lost to a better team. I can handle that.
Perhaps I should invest in some Ambien. That may be all that can help me... :-)
FSJ,
Off hand do you know how many deep balls JP Wilson has completed this season? I ask this because during the Gary Danielson stated that JP Wilson was the best deep ball passer in the SEC.
CBS has got to get another crew for the marquee SEC games.
Danielson was drunk...When he said that everybody over here watching the game was like WTH?
I can only think of one (Kentucky to Julio)...He overthrows each one.
I love Danielson! Him and Verne are a hoot. Between them and Mike Patrick, SEC games are pretty fun to watch.
FSJ, I don't know that Alabama overachieved. They were head and shoulders above everyone they played other than Florida. And they were better than Florida for three quarters. I would say they didn't overachieve, but merely achieved.
We often hear (or demand) that the new HC MUST be a great recruiter in Florida.
How about someone who can or will recruit in Texas?
Have you seen the talent from that state? I'd love to hear that the new HC took his first recruiting to the Lone Star state to snag a couple QBs and WRs we so desperately need.
Just my opinion.
Your thoughts?
michael,
I especially love Verne's ability to prounounce names.
Outstanding stuff.
I say we overachieved because the experts didn't think too highly of us before the season. We are talented but don't have top notch talent at every position....yet.
On another note, the Tallahassee newspaper is reporting that Fisher's buyout is indeed $5 million. If that is the case he never was a serious candidate, IMO.
or pronounce names.....good grief.
Sensi,
I think they say Florida because Auburn is close to Florida and kids wouldn't be moving too far from home.
The problem going into Texas is a lot of kids or kids parents don't want them to move that far away.
"If one can play quarterback at Nebraska well enough to finish 4th in the Heisman voting one can handle pressure."
That's a completely different type of pressure.
RK, that's a good point. But look at the number of Texas players on SEC rosters sometime. It might surprise you.
I've just spent the season when the best QBs in the country not named Tebow are all from one state.
Just saying...
I'm not saying it can't happen, I'm just saying we have a better chance in Florida than Texas.
Jay you wrote an outstanding article. Now let's not make a habit of that type of stuff (Sorry FSJ). I would also like to request a court marshall on legendary hottie Herr Wolf General MonD, for the deletion of the entire chatroll transcript of poor ole biscuitator. The power has clearly gone to some people's head...
yeah only 2 of those QBs came out of texas were really highly regarded weren't they. the others were just diamonds in the rough.
It's gettin' close time for Jet's Sonic "BOOM!"
I have a question.
Was 2004 an apparition?
We are far enough removed now to examine this. For the most part, this what we all base hopes of a BCS title upon However, there is little other supporting evidence to support it.
At this point, when can we hope to be atop the SEC West again?
FSJ, you're spot on with your thoughts on the 5 million dollar buyout. That would put the transition amount over 10 million and that's not even including first year salary and staff salary. I don't think Jimbo is going to be the guy. At this point, I don't have a feeling on anyone. I just hope it's someone that can come here and win some ball games.
Mr. Sensible, at this point, as much as I hate to admit it, 2004 seems to definitely be the exception and not the rule. It was the top of the bell curve and unfortunately due to the circumstances we didn't get our shot.
Mr. S.,
I think in terms of an undefeated season, yes 2004 is the exception not the rule for Auburn and most other programs.
In terms of a trip to Atlanta and a shot at the SEC Championship, it should be more the norm than an exception. I will qualify that by defining "norm" as every 2-4 years. Other teams in the league have shown the ability to do this and I believe it is realistic to expect Auburn to do this.
Sean and James, good points by both of you.
James, I hope that is Auburn's goal when hiring a new coach.
I agree James.
We should be able to get to Atlanta more than we have. Not just under Tub, but overall. The thing started in 1992 and we've been 3 times. So 3 times in 17 years, that's pretty much once every 6 years. The same number as Arkansas and half as many as Alabama.
I agree games. Every 2-4 years should be doable.
games? Make that James.
After FSU's President spoke about the 5 million dollar buyout for Fisher, I guess he's staying put.
Mon, I received a message from an associate you banhammered yesterday. Please message me on Facebook or at jgtate@gannett.com to explain.
"And it's off to the principal's office you go"
-Young MC
This is the time when the whole class goes "OOOOOOOOOOH"
Spanking on isle one...
Spanking on isle one...
Does anyone feel like Turner Gill would be playing the part of Denzel Washington in "Remember The Titans"?
Isle one. I love it.
JayG,
Is there ANY info that AU is also going to look at Kelly at Cinncinnati?
I can't believe that they would not include him, if the timing is not good for the top names mentioned earlier (Muschamps, Fischer, Davis, etc).
Eagle...
Thats another one that I am curious about too.
Kelly is a heckuva coach.
http://buffalonews.typepad.com/campus/2008/12/report-skip-hol.html
comment by Buffalo reporter re: Syracuse choosing Holtz over Gill.
Coach Gill, this AU fan wants you in AUBURN!!!
been on old 'puter and couldn't remember login. now that I'm back on the mac, watchout ;-)
re post earlier this morning
AU to Dallas = 700 miles
AU to Miami = 658 miles
that ain't much difference
Mac = awesome.
Somebody has been using mapquest....
300
haven't been to mapquest in forever; i'm a dedicated googler
Tar - Thanks for the link. What do you think about the comment stating Holtz is a better fit for Auburn?
i was surprised that holtz's name never came up in the au context.
a slow day with the news means there is something afoot with the Auburn job search..
This comment has been removed by the author.
You think Denny?
Monica-
Ignorance of the facts is what I think
Holtz "master recruiter in the [S]outh"
HAHAHAHA
I think Skip is a good coach and a good recruiter. I think TGill is a better coach and better recruiter.
The search never sleeps. The Modus Operandi of the Committee to Find a New Auburn Coach (CofNac) uses slow news days to make hay while the sun is shining. Just ask Jay G. When you think something is up, it is just part of the deception plan. The trick is to figure out the difference. So far, no one has shown the ability to break into the inner circle of the powers that be. Any information that hits, especially that of the secand hand variety is a planned leak of partial truth.
ITAT and other such boards just make it that much easier to get bad information out there to obfuscate the real intention.
anyone see The Visor at SECCG? lots of talk on the mostly fictional blogs that he was spotted at Auburn yesterday.
After reading up on Gill, It does seem he has a big upside in that he is known to be a good recruiter, one of the aspects I consider essential for a head coach.
I tend to view a head coach as a good manager that gets good recruits and good coaches, but leaves the coaching up to his staff. Yes, that may sound strange to you, but it is what I think most successful long term coaches do.
So, with Gill, if I were interviewing him, the most critical questions would be who he would think of bringing in as coordinators.
I must admit that this head coaching search is interesting, although I think it has become clear we won't be able to attract the quality of coach we already had.
Let the disinformation begin.
I believe that a good head not only does what Steve says, but, like Ronald Reagan, has core values and beliefs that he sticks with. Reagan's were defeating commmunism, limited government, free market. To not do that, well you saw what happened this year. Additionally, I saw Bill Curry implode at UK when he lost his identity on the offensive side of the ball.
The next coach has to have that and stick with it. To change would be a disaster.
Eaglesteeler: I always keep an eye out for great coaches whose names haven't been discussed.
Kelly fits that category right now.
Tar - Yeah, I had to read that "master recruiter in the south" thing a couple of times.
I read where FSU's AD confirmed Fischer's buyout at 5 Million, and then added "they don't have 5 million"....puuuhleaseee! We should hire him, pay the buyout and then offer him a coordinator's job just to prove a point. In these days of college athletics, unless you have a double digit million dollar buyout (a la Weis) it don't mean squat if a team wants your guy bad enough. That being said, I for one do not think he is worth a buyout at all. If he were that good of a coach, he would already have HC experience at a big-time program instead of being a career coordinator at some good schools. I am sure he has turned down plenty of jobs at small schools. Talented, hungry coaches don't wait around as a coordinator for the "perfect gig"...they take decent ones, coach their arse off and parlay it into that type of gig. Auburn needs a hungry guy right now, not a comfortable one.
Yes, it's a long way to the lower tip of Florida from Auburn. You got me there.
Most of Florida is closer to Auburn than most of Texas. Is that better?
Plus kids in Florida are more familiar with Auburn than kids in Texas.
Anyway...yes Miami is a ways away.
Ok - Sorry if I was "that guy" last night.
I feel better. My kid woke up at about 3 am with an earache and we sat up until about 430 watching "Winie the Pooh's Search for Christopher Robbin".
Arejen Robben is the best football on my fave team!
By the way, the ATL linebacker (Atchinson) formerly committed to us committed to the evil empire yesterday. Hope his butt doesn't mind splinters...they are full of linebackers.
I brought up the 5 million yesterday.
FSU confirmed?
Coach Dye took a chence on a troubled youth RB from Ft. Lauderdale -- I think he's still involved at Dillard.
How long was Gill @ Nebraska?
Yes Chris, and added the barb about "they (Auburn) doesn't have 5 Mil."
RK, yes that's alright.
Point is, although good recruits are scattered across both states, there is a huge concentration in S Florida and in the eastern half of Texas. So I agree with Mr Sensible that we need a coach willing to target Texas perhaps more diligently than in the past.
