Malzahn making his way to Auburn
Hey everyone. We now have official confirmation that Gene Chizik has elected to hire Gus Malzahn as Auburn's next offensive coordinator.
``Gus is one of the great offensive minds in college football and we are very excited to having him join the Auburn staff,” Chizik said. ``His track record at all levels of coaching is remarkable and his offenses have been extremely successful both running and passing the ball. It’s truly impressive that he oversees an offense that is in the top 10 nationally in all five major offensive statistical categories. We’re looking forward to having Gus on board."
WHO IS GUS MALZAHN? He's a former high school coach from Springdale, Ark., who moved into college ball at Arkansas during the 2006 season. After one year with the Razorbacks, Malzahn left to run Tulsa's offense. That's where he is now. He is 43 years old.
WHAT DOES HE RUN? It's a spread offense in spirit. Malzahn likes to spread the field, run wide, run inside, pass quickly at times. It has a spread pace. This is not a passing offense. It's a blend, though Malzahn's Tulsa teams ran the ball far more often than they passed. This is the most run-oriented strain of spread offense.
SO IT'S SHOTGUN STUFF? Yes, in some ways. Shotgun is a common formation, but the backs are used more creatively than what you saw with Tony Franklin's offense. You'll see backs in motion, end arounds, more driving runs between the tackles. There is an emphasis on quick reads and quick passes. It moves at a quick pace once the ball is snapped.
Malzahn also liked to use the team's quickest wideout, A.J. Whitmore, in Tulsa's version of the "Wildcat" formation. That's one of the new trends in football -- using a skill-position guy at quarterback occasionally. Malzahn was doing that with Darren McFadden during his Arkansas days as well. He wasn't the first coach to use that formation, but he brought it back to the mainstream in 2006.
Many fans know the formation from watching the Miami Dolphins run it so successfully this season with former Auburn tailback Ronnie Brown. That system was installed by the Dolphins' quarterbacks coach, David Lee. He worked with Malzahn at Arkansas.
BUT JAY, I HATE THE SHORT PASSING GAME: That shouldn't be an issue with Malzahn. He likes throwing deep. His 2007 quarterback, Paul Smith, was the first quarterback in college history to throw for at least 300 yards in 14 consecutive games. You don't generate those kinds of numbers by throwing screen passes. Tulsa's 2008 quarterback, David Johnson, didn't put up the same kinds of numbers. That's because the Golden Hurricane ran far more often.
Still, Johnson was throwing deep. Tulsa's receivers averaged 15.8 yards per catch this season. That's slightly more than when Smith went on his 300-yard binge in 2007.
Auburn's receivers, by comparison, averaged 10.8 yards per catch this season.
CAN I SEE THE NUMBERS? Absolutely.
TULSA (2008)
Total plays: 1007
Run/pass: 610/397
Run percentage: 61
TULSA (2007)
Total plays: 1126
Run/pass: 562/564
Run percentage: 50
*He inherited a senior quarterback who was highly efficient. Malzahn played to his team's strengths here.
ARKANSAS (2006)
Total plays: 841
Run/pass: 539/302
Run percentage: 64
WAS THIS OFFENSE WORKING AT TULSA? Definitely. Take a look at how the Golden Hurricane ranked among the 119 NCAA Bowl Subdivision teams.
Rushing offense: 8th (255 ypg)
Passing offense: 7th (310 ypg)
Total offense: 2nd (565 ypg)

one?
two?
Home run!
4... still pretty good!
I like the Hire... he hit it out of the park... way to Go Coach Chizzle!
Hey this guy committed to Tulsa, think he'll follow him to Auburn? Shavodrick Beaver | QB
Taking a look at their stats, They did throw for around 4000 yards, but they also ran for about 2000. I have a feeling we didn't get 2000 yds this year COMBINED passing and rushing.
How to reconcile it with the "run first" mentality Chizik alluded to at his presser?
JKev ... Tulsa was 60-40 in favor of the run this year. Average 254 yards per game on the ground, 310 yards per game through the air.
Tulsa averaged 47.4 points per game and scored 81 touchdowns on offense.
I think I owe you a t-shirt Jay
Interesting...
I did not see much of Tulsa this season, but when I did, they were impressive. But I'm not astute enough to know how much of it was Malzahn and how much was Graham.
Regardless, they showed that a defensive-minded HC and a highly-regarded OC with a wide-open offense can co-exist.
I think this is a huge shot in the arm.
Graham is a defensive guy. The offense is all Gus
Regardless, our boys better get ready to throw and catch, then run....... ALOT
And Chiz never said "run-first."
He only said he planed to be physical and strong in the running game.
You can look around this league and see physical, successful offenses that weren't "run-first."
It's OK, runinred. I have five already.
Malzahn also has SEC experience. He just didn't get along with Nutt.
Think he can do anything with our QBs?
Now that is some what of a splash. I would think he will have a hand in bringing in some position coaches. I am anxious to see if CC lets him run it uninterrupted which has been the problem to date with the Tigers.
Mobile ...
Quit believin' my Eddie Gran jokes. He's gone ... get in the game, son.
Where ya been?
But how about you holding back on us...I mean come on!
Jet,
Hand Sister and family come on last night so i missed out on everything.... i left my helmet at home, sorry.
But i'm here now.... is this sweet or what as an OC hire?
SPLASH!!!!!
A great hire. I went to bed with Nix nightmares, and woke up to Malzahn.
I told you Nix wasn't going to be the guy. I'm glad some of you listened!
Jay ... I believe you ... and I believed that we wouldn't totally ditch spread ...
Just pleased as can be that it turned out to be Gus. Figured it would be some NFL guy.
Fenchy should be happy with this hire!
As upset as I am that Auburn didn't hire Nix....
this seems to be a really good hire.
yes...we...can!
This hire has caused a little excitement among Auburn fans, finally!
Do you think he can bring some players he coached in high school to Auburn? That seemed to work out well last time.
Hey Jay, any news on what type of recruiter he is? I know he was a high school coach in Arkansas.
I hang my head in shame Jay. Even after you said, oh, about 125 times in the campfire it wasn't Nix, I believed the worst. My apologies. I know this is being greedy, but is there ANY hope for Rodney Garner? If he comes I may have to change my name to usedtobe depressedAUfan.
Can anybody give me a reason why Pat Nix should have been seriously considered, OTHER than the name of his alma mater?
Thanks.
LOL depressed. I was sitting here wondering if we could possibly hope for Garner. What a coup that would be!
JKev ...
He loves Auburn.
Malzahn is a QB coach too, correct? Lord, the names of our coaches, Malzahn, Chizik,...!!!
hell yeah, this will be huge with recruits. i cant wait for next season now
Great hire -- finally something to be excited about!
i can see him developing Kodi into a decent QB too
I'm with J.Kev on this one.
Kathy,
With CGM I think we have a good shot at Shavodrick Beaver, ...#8 dual threat QB.
That would be nice esp. since we lost Ray Cotton....wonder if his dad is making a call to CGC now to say: "wellllllll we had a change of heart...and was wondering if that scholly was still available"? lol
I keep saying this: Nix is welcome to join the staff at Auburn ... on the network , taking Stan White's place.
Mobile said "Beaver." heh heh heh heh
J. Kev- NO.
Jet:
Yeah, thanks. But that kinda violates the "other than" provision of my question.
I'll take it as a "no," and move happily on.
Jay - Here are my questions.
1. Does this mean things aren't being as heavily influenced by Dye as I may have imagined? I ask because this is a break from the total "power" game.
2. Does this mean we will be able to attract more "play makers"?
3. Why were you a Tulsa watcher all season long?
Jet,
Oh you got Jokes?
Dye said he loves the spread on Finebaum last year
Jet, I think after that 2-minute "clinic" in the UM-Cal game last night, Miami will pay AU to put him in the booth.
Monica, forgive me, but here's my take.
1. I guess Dye got caught with his pants down.
2. Lutzenkirchen, here we come.
3. Tulsa rocks him like a Golden Hurricane.
I hope we get Shavodrick Beaver.
Then our 3 consecutive QB's will be Cox Burns Beaver.
No, I'm not 12... I just act like it!
It's amazing ... we do something absolutely sane, competent, logical and forward thinking ... and we're acting like it's the end of days.
Aubie. That .... Is .... AWESOME!!
And thinking on that Jet - does this mean Auburn is now ...rational?
We'll get to see Malzahn's offense when Tulsa plays Ball State in the GMAC Bowl, Jan 6, in Mobile/ESPN @ 8:00 EST.
It means Michael's front-page quote has gotta go.
Jet, I think it is mentioned in Revalations as one of the final signs. Who would have believed it?
if phred were here, he wouldve already said: in order to make sense, you must first make none.
auburn carries on the TT zen philosophy.
Mr. Tommy - I'm trying hard to sell those Bob Dylan vinyls.
Hey Monica,
I'll see it first hand as i will be attending the Game here in Mobile.....YEAH!!!
Mobile - Very cool. I'd like to see that one. Were you already planning to go?
Thank you Mon!!
I am finally emerging from my J Jacobs induced funk.
This is tremendous news!
Yes,
My Company buys tickets for clients every year.... i have a list...tell me if you really want to come Holla at your boy! i got connections!!!!
Where is steve the optimist? It doesn't seem right to have all of this positive talk without him.
Jet now has the featured quote ... and a good one!
I for one and gonna wait on being to happy about this. Just remember last year how excited we were for Tony Franklin. But hey, at least we didn't get Nix. How excited are you Jay G that you don't have to keep getting that question everyday now?
Seems like another gamble to me.
Ok...now that this has been decided...
Jay...any word on the new DC?
;-)
Jet,
OK i'm really jealous now.... you're being quoted....
Got to say more positive stuff on the H.A.B.O.T.N.......Got to say more positive stuff on the H.A.B.O.T.N.......Got to say more positive stuff on the H.A.B.O.T.N.......
Gamble?
The major gamble would be hiring Cro Magnon as offensive coordinator and hoping you could recruit to it.
This is a solid business decision.
Carnell has scored today. He is looking like the back of old with his quick burst.
Monica, can you handle the DC questions now?
Scott, I think it is a gamble, but at least with a big upside.
It's better than gambling on an OC who can't run a 2 minute offense (see Nix last night) or a head coach with an abysmal record (whoops).
This gives me reason for hope...
must go watch Shawshank Redemption now.
Jay, when you did that with the OC ... it got settled in 18 hours ... are we to surmise that the DC choice is imminent?
Or should I ask Monica?
so I guess I officially have no shot at having the veer ran at Auburn? Dang, there goes my Christmas wish.
Aubie ...
Best ... Movie ... Ever
No, Jay does not know who the DC will be.
Do you?
Jet's just full of quotables today
Brian ... we're going to put in a special veer package so Ronnie Bass can run it.
Gamble, I agree with Jet....
Every coaching hire is a gamble, but if you have something to work with this will be a plus... we complained about CGC and his record and hire....now we get an O.C. on the upswing and someone considers it a GAMBLE....PLEASE!!!
Cro Magnon... now that's funny!
I guess he would run the 200 (million) year old offense CGC was talking about.
Gen George Pickett could run the 200 year old offense.
Jay - I'll only ask you one of my earlier 3 questions again...
Why were you loving Tulsa all year? Are you psychic?
this adds a new wrinkle to next year's au-ole miss game. nutt vs malzahn.
Thank you very much for the offer, Mobile, but no way would I travel from Huntington, WV to Mobile for the GMAC Bowl.
Brian from Troy, I share your fear of happiness. Hopefully this hire will have the belief and full support of the offensive staff and the head coach. That is the difference I see from the Franklin hire.
I am glad to see my front page quote is not relevant today. It is a good day.
However, it is still true: Auburn is not rational. Luckily, the failure of a head coach they hired appears to be rational, so this whole thing may work out after all.
I like it.
Of course when compared to Nix, it's a definate grand slam hire.
i believe jgt has family with a tulsa connection.
Bill Cowher was tempted to work a comb over. I can tell. My Byron Leftwhich running in a TD for the Steelers. I love him!
Thank you, Scott from the T.
most welcome
scott from tuscon,
I was just thinking the same thing.... you don't think Gus will try to stick it to NUTT!!!!
Hahaha that was funny!!!
MALZAHN??? Now that might just be crazy enough to work.
Aubie our whole program is a gamble at this point. At least we arent betting with monopoly money anymore.
My parents are Tulsa people and I like those kinds of offenses.
Fun to watch, fun to ponder.
I didnt want Nix either but he did a good job last night adjusting to what Cal was doing against them. I was acutally impressed.
I remember watching McFadden running in that wildcat formation and hoping one day Auburn could run that. Looks like it might finally come true. But who will we get to do it is the question. Tate is too slow to run it...maybe Fannin?? Wildcat + Auburn= good times on the plains.
Great hire, and great coverage, Jay. Thanks.
Onterrio McCalebb and a healthy PPL would be my top Wildcat nominees.
Chris Todd was born to be a Wildcat QB
Who are some of the best DC out there available you would like to see? Has Chavis been hired yet? I don't really care for Reggie Herring but I would like to take Bud Foster away from VT.
Jay I cant remember is Tulsa ran a no huddle. Did they?
Bud Foster....no chance. I would like to see Chizik run the thing myself. He did a pretty good job while he was at Auburn in that position. So Jay G, I guess you are positive that McCalebb is coming to Auburn now? I know he was looking around lately. He would be a HUGE pickup if we can snag him.
Well with a new OC all the qb's will be starting from scratch and I just don't see Todd getting back to any reps for Spring due to his surgery. I think Trotter could be the starting QB for the 09 season. I think they may utilize Burns in the Wildcat with the run/pass option.
I say take Chavis if he is available. If we have to hire someone unproven, it would be nice to see Chizik heavily involved in the D.
Is there any way Malzahn could possibly love Arbren as much as Pat Nix does?
I think we've made a horrible mistake.
How about Rodney Garner as DC learning from Chizik? Any chance?
I don't think Rodney Garner actually coaches in the traditional sense. I think a certain "Coach Green" rides with him on all his recruting trips.
Don't get me wrong; I'd love him to come home. But I think he'd be out of his depth as a DC.
I guess it's a good think Speedy didn't tell us to book his source and the Greg Davis info.
_____________
No, Jay does not know who the DC will be.
Do you?
Jay, check your numbers on the front page. I think the math is a little off.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Gus Malzahn is handsome. That's 2 for 2 for those of you who are tracking the Handsome Hire record.
Just sayin
JKev ...
I am shocked that you would level such scurrilous and unfounded allegations.
Monica ...
I guess that means Michael and Mobile are the finalists for DC.
Of course every coaching hire is a gamble, but this is a big one. I would not pay any attention to the TULSA offensive numbers. As for his success at Arkansas, that is pretty intriguing but he did have the SEC's most talented player in the last 20 years at his disposal. The key to Auburn's success will always be running the football, establishing ball control and a strong defense. It doesn't matter what offense we have, for the most part we will be outrecrutied on the 'Star Meter' by schools such as Bama, UGA, and Florida. However, it does not mean that we cannot beat those teams on a regular basis. Should be fun to watch though, unless it doesn't work.
So the dead period ends Jan 5th and Malzahn will be coaching in the GMAC bowl on Jan 6th. Maybe he can do a little recruiting while he is in Mobile.
Jet,
Nice you worked both into a comment
"scurrilous and unfounded allegations"
WOW!!!! you are good Jet!
It's amazing what a pot of coffee and a new OC will do for you, Mobile!
J. Kev, Maybe I am wrong, but I think the gloves are about to come off in recruiting. The Clemson coach comments about Julio, Ensmingers wifes comments on the radio, all of the signs are there. We have the x's and o's covered nicely with Chizik and Malzahn, now we neen the Jimmies and the Joes. Garrner can deliver, and he wants a co-ordinator role. AU needs to make it happen.
Malzahn will take over on Jan. 7.
He is coaching with Tulsa through the Jan. 6 GMAC Bowl.
Also, Chizik and Malzahn will be available for interviews tomorrow. I'll be sure to get video and FULL HABOTN COVERAGE rolling at that point.
Kathy,
I'm all over it.... I got a list for Coach Malzahn, to check out when he comes down here with Coach Willis.....
I'm Geeked....
Jet no I'm not a candidate for DC! Remember I'm an offensive dude only....
Maybe Mitch Mustain will transfer again now.
Pat Nix loves Auburn, but not enough to get on our crazy train. He's in a program of similar stature, with great young talent, and situated in one of the best recruiting patches in the US. He'll ride that situation to a head coaching job.
Depressed, I couldn't agree with yuo more.
JKev, it's the war we've been wanting. And it's time to go down the in the valley smite those freakin' Philistines.
And we won't come home until FSJ's head is on a stick.
Jet,
Think "300"
Banmmers it's on now!!!!! no more mr. nice aubbie!!!!
runin ... fixed the number.
It was a transcription error, not a calculation error.
I wonder how long it will take Mrs. Gus Malzahn (Kristi Otwell Malzahn) to slap a restraining order on me if I request to add her to my Facebook? That's very Colletteish behavior.
We need to let Malzahn choose his own assistants. We need all the oars pulling in the same direction.
I'm pumped.
Monica,
Ahhh are you alright in WVA.... hummmm does Greg know about your Malzahn/ Chizik fixation?
hey as a friend i'm just asking...
Chicks dig the square jaw!!!!
Any one want to car pool down to see the GMAC bowl? I know thats what Bammer did when they hired Fran but I haven't see the Golden Hurricane offense run and I'd like to.
Greg encourages all my fixations.
Thanks Mobile! Glad we got you looking out for Auburn down there.
Monica ... I've been parked in front of the Kiffins' yard, holding up a sign that says "Layla, will you be my friend?"
Is that creepy?
Did we get a confirmation that CGM is a QB coach? Or will he be bringing one from Tulsa.
Also, Jay- How does that work, does he bring his existing staff, or does CGC tell him who is has in mind (especially since Searles seems to be out of the equation).
I just messaged Kristi Malzahn to welcome them ... she reports that they are excited.
Real-time stalking. Gotta luv it.
Sorry: We now have official confirmation that Malzahn will coach QBs.
Bull! Did you really, Jet?
Chicks dig Z's, and we have two now. I looked at a 300Z yesterday - not to be outdone.
Chicks don't dig statisticians.
Seriously Jet?
Uh, yeah, I did. Via Facebook.
I agree Jay I am raising the BS card on my man Jet
Wow. That's some nice work, Jetarsky.
Jet- war, Philistines, Chizik needs you to give the pregame speech before Bama. Can you camp out in Garners front yard until he returns?
sorry for cut and paste
Kristi Otwell Malzahn
Thanks! We are excited! War Eagle!
Sent via Facebook Mobile
I would kill to give the after Thursday practice speech before the game against the Infidels.
Cool, Jet!
I should never doubt my man Jetzzle
Ole Miss at Auburn next year. Should be a fun game!
I figured before Kristi could get a restraining order on Monica, I'd pile on and let them know that all the HOTTIES are psycho-love AU crazy.
Wow, Jet that is stalk-a-licious.
So I also take it you are on the Garner for DC campaign?
Packin' up the car and headin' to Athens.
Jet speaks truth. It's a war, and it's on like freaking donkey kong.
No quarter given, nor asked. Let the streets run with the blood of the infidel.
Jet= William Wallace in Braveheart. Infidel Bammers will never take his freedom.
Damn. Cadillac had to be helped off the field with a knee injury. That guy is just cursed.
Depressed AU Fan. Don't worry about UA. I know you've heard all the rumors and the signs are there. A lot of smoke, cause the fire is hot. Saben nation will get their due, courtesy of the NCAA. Coming soon, to a talk show near you, the dreaded PLI. Listen for the gnashing of teeth from the bammers, cause its a coming
cool freakin' beans jet. that is ausome!
WOW!!!!
Restraining Orders, Fixations, Take no Prisoners attitudes.... adn to top it off two "Z's"
Oh and it's on like POP CORN!
I love this New Auburn Football Era!!!!
Aubie. Just got on. I love your QB rotation comment. That's enough to make spongworthy proud for sure.
Sponge, I hope you are correct, but I have heard that same talk before. The SEC commisioner stated one of his main goals was to have NO teams on probation. There is a new TV contract on the table and I believe he doesn't WANT to hear any reports of cheating. A free-for-all is coming. Again, I am not trying to doubt your sources, hopefully they are correct. I just don't see it happening.

Correction to post:
Depressed ... it is a free-for-all. Slive says he wants no one on probation, so there won't be.
See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.
It's like the wild, wild West out there.
Jet- it is funny to hear the SEC pres say he wants nobody on probation, there are no teams on probation, therefore everyone is playing by the rules. It's a wonderful life.
Every time a bell rings, the Red Elephant Club makes a payment.
Maybe MalcontentZhan can go get everybody's savior Cotton and bring in another QB with over-involved parents.
He's got a track record with those.
(See Mitch Mustain)
SEC office tried to kill this one, but to no avail. They set up road block after road block, but problem was so pervasive, something had to be done. Coaches all over the south complaining.
Gosh a great day from hiring Malzahn now we have to watch Cadillac getting carried off the field after his best performance since his return. I think it is his left knee this time.
Jet. I heard those bells. Sounded like a symphony there were so many. Just like the time of Dubose. New coach comes in, top five recruits from every state suddenly decides bama is the place to go. As Paul Harvey would say, now you know the REST of the story.
Sensi ...
I love you, man, but that's the easy take. I believe it's wrong.
What's Malzahn supposed to do? Not take the job at Arkansas? Not bring the best QB that's every played in that state?
Arkansas created that mess ... kinda like we created one last year ... Malzahn's mess just doesn't translate to Auburn. It doesn't apply. He'll be the sheriff in Auburn. No questions.
As for Cotton, if Malzahn wants him, go get him. If not, go get who he wants.
Sponge,
I hope you are right ... I'll just believe it when I see it.
Sponge, it is obviously Saban's winning combination of charm and personality winning these recruits hearts and minds. Right?
Jet. I understand. Same thing I've said for the past three months I've been hearing it.
Chizik absolutely made a good hire. Three yards and a cloud of dust can't get the players AU needs to compete. Like it or not, UA, UF, UGA (our recruiting base) will get the top talent in the respective states year in/out. When on an even playing field, best we could ever do is split the top 12 in the state w/ UA. Tommy was right to try and get an advantage w/ Franklin, it was just the wrong hire. We need something extra to attract the skill players, couple that will working at it as hard as Saben and staff, then we have a chance to compete.
Jet, buddy, I appreciate your opinion.
However, this whole thing - the spread - the way guys like Malzhan run it is a fad. And it is fading.
Don't get lost in the numbers of teams that do this. To win in the SEC, you have to have a power run game. Shotgun running generally doesn't produce that.
Hope I'm wrong, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
At least we'll all have the whole spring and summer to get hyped up on yet another offensive system. LOL!
Spongeworthy - I agree. I think the recruitability of a Malzahn offense will help.
I like the hire.
Depressed, he's a charmer. LOL. However, I've talked to multiple HS Coaches, and they all say that the UA staff does work their butt off. Add hard work, with being the state school, then a little extra grease in the palm and you have a pretty formidable foe.
Tommy and staff just got a little too comfortable. Also, TT has some other issues he is dealing with so football not the main thing anymore.
I hope you're wrong, Sensi. You were just right so often this year.
Sensi ... I used to believe it was a fad ... but go watch HS games on Friday nights ... it's the way kids are being taught to play the game now.
It just depends on what flavor you're running ... I think this version is more to our run-oriented liking.
Mr. Sens. I think you can run the ball and be real physical without lining up in the I-formation all the time. What you CAN't do, like Franklin tried to do, is run a read option stretch play, to the right every time, with a QB that has no arm, and has no legs, and a big tailback like Tate that has no speed or moves. Absolutely freakin insane. Over and over and over. Ground hog day....
I've seen that in high school, Jet. It has taken over there and in the "mid-major" conferences of FBS (not to mention the FCS and D2).
However, look at our primary competition. Don't think about Florida's spread because the key to that is a once-in-a-generation player (Tebow). Teams that try to go with a spread in the SEC just have problems against the physical once.
Though it's worth noting (even if argues against my earlier posts) that the Big 12 back in the Southwest Conf days was a power/option run league with tons of defense. Almost top to bottom they are all running the spread and throwing up big numbers. (Except Iowa State but let's not go there. LOL)
Maybe the SEC is in a time of transition.
Spongeworthy, the key to success in the spread is the trigger man at QB.
Can't have a noodle arm guy and can't have a freak out under pressure guy either.
Mr. Tommy - Please check your Facebook email. I have a bite on the albums.
Sensi,
I am on your side......btw does anyone know the what the story is behind the Herb Hand/CGM mix at Tulsa?
Jet,
I am impressed.. I may have to move my picture of jay over and add more candles to my alter of homage.....
(i had to get rid of the incense between that and Jay Jacobs talking,,,it was giving me a headache...)
Sensi. I agree, but the key to ANY decent team is a good QB. Bama had a very good running game, but also a senior QB. Tebow, playing in the championship game. UGA would have been 6-6 if they didn't have their QB. Look at LSU with their Power running game, great talent all around, but a QB that sucked.
We need someone to COACH our qb's. Their fundamentals are horrible. I think you will see a change in Burns, but also, Trotter ran the spread in HS. He may be the guy.
Every time a bell rings, the Red Elephant Club makes a payment.
And every time a virgin walks by Denny Chimes, a brick falls out.
J Kev, I just spewed coffee. That's hilarious!
Coffee, Sensi?
What a stellar idea.
Oh we're going to be terrible. We'll get killed by everyone. It's going to be miserable next season.
I hope that works. Last year about this time I set a career record for personal excitement about Auburn's next season.
Can't wait to hear about the DC. Another key hire. And also, the receivers coach. Another real key. Oh, who are we kidding, all of them are key. We can't afford to have anyone not pulling their weight on the field and in recruiting.
Jet,
I got some German blend for Christmas that is magnificent.
any takers on the rumor that Franklin will be hired by Graham to run the Tulsa offense?
I agree with an earlier post, I wish CGC would hire def. ass't but do his own DCing.
No, Jay does not know who the next DC will be.
*This is a recording. Had this been an actual hiring announcement you would have seen a post on the blog.
Why did everyone hate the spread; but, now loves the former (three years removed) high school coach that runs the spread.
Was it just Franklin?
Franklin's done. He can go hang out w/ Hoover's ex HS coach, Propst, and talk about their family(s).
Sponge,
Franklin is not even close to being done. Trust me.
And Probst has a pretty sweet gig at a school in Georgia.
First, you can't say "the spread" as if it is one, static, concrete set of plays.
Secondly, are you a bama fan?
Actually, that would be the ironies of ironies. The DC to ISU and the OC to Tulsa.
Pretty dang fitting.
Monica:
Yes, I am. I have only posted one other time. I have followed this board all year and love it.
You guys are great and seem to not reach the legion of over-zealous fans that plague both sides.
Chizik was a curious hire. But, what a lot of my brethren don't like to admit, he would have been hailed as a returning star had he come directly from UT.
I think he will be fine. This move is probably good as well. I was just curious about the rationale. A month ago everyone hated the spread and only wanted smash mouth.
Now..., not so much.
It is all just net stuff though. It will be fun to watch recruiting and especially the spring.
Sponge, I hear what you are saying. Saban is a real challenge. AU needs to step up and bring in the people that can accept that challenge. I don't think there is any doubt that CTT was distracted, and that is unforgivable dealing with Saban and company. Not to mention Miles, Richt etc.
Ronnie Brown is running the Wild Cat today. I hope the dolphins can pull out a win.
Sensi. u may be right, but I just don't see how anyone would take a chance on him. Even if you believe all the issues at AU were due to our players/coaches, Franklin just isn't the kind of personality that fits many schools, certainly not AU. He's not a particulary nice guy, not a real magnetic personality. Just don't see it.
Welcome Mike the Tider.
Mike the T****-
I prefer good ol' fashion smash mouth football over "the spread" but was still real excited about the Franklin hire last year since we hadn't been smashing any mouths the last few years.
Depressed. The sad thing about the whole AU situation right now is that Saben basically told everyone in his press conference what was going to happen. " There is a team across the state that we will work 24 hrs a day to DOMINATE". He threw down the gauntlet, and Tubby/staff didn't rise to the challenge.
