Monday evening update

Here is what I know:

Tommy Tuberville and athletic director Jay Jacobs went their separate ways Monday night without discussing the football situation. They didn't meet Monday afternoon.

It's unclear if Jacobs and university president Jay Gogue met at some point.

Regardless, no decisions have been made.

Looks like I'll be back here at the Athletic Complex tomorrow morning for another round.

  1. I hope something is announced soon, one way or the other. This couldn't be helping recruiting.

  2. get there early, Jay.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Signing Day still is a long way away ...

    ReplyDelete
  4. Thanks, Jet.

Can you wake me up at the appropriate time? I struggle before 7 a.m.

    Thanks for the update

  6. It's not doing much for my nerves, either. I hate all the suspense!

  7. I'll be up at 4:45 to head to the gym ... Shall I call then or at 6:15 post workout?

    Anything to help.

  8. Ryan Pugh and clip.

Take a look and give your opinion on this uncalled clip by Pugh. Was it intentional?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Wow, that didn't look good.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Better wait until well after the workout.

    ReplyDelete
  11. No that didn't look good at all. But what's the rule there? The bama player wasn't being blocked at that time, so was it illegal?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Lives on the Plains.

  13. Tuberville firing percentage:

    UP UP UP

    ReplyDelete
  14. i agree with that jay and i don't know why... i have felt confident he was staying this whole time... all of a sudden i'm not so sure.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Whoa, Jay. What happened?

    ReplyDelete
  16. What can these people have to do that can't go ahead and meet this morning, make a decision and announce the decision this evening? It's not like they didn't know this day was coming. Has the decision really not been made yet?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jay, care to give your new %?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous5:08 PM

    Wow, Jay. You think?

    ReplyDelete
  19. i guess it's a combo of a blowout... tennessee getting what seems like a great coaching staff and croom getting the boot

I wouldn't at all be surprised, if they are making run at Butch Davis... not that i know anything... it just wouldn't surprise me

I just refreshed and now it is UP UP UP? Wha happeen?

  21. Don't leave us hanging Jay!

    The suspense is unbearable

    ReplyDelete
  24. I just read Phillip's blog, where he stated this was getting ridiculous.

It sounds like Phillip may be thinking Tubs might be gone too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. P Marshall just said on Sportscall that he didn't feel near as strongly about CTT returning as he has the last couple of days. Not that Jay didn't pretty much say the same thing, but I know he respects Philips' sources. The feeling seems to have changed today for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anonymous5:15 PM

I guess I don't understand why they wouldn't have a discussion both being in the office today.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I talked with PMarsh about this.

He thinks it's unfair to leave Tuberville twisting in the wind, so to speak.

As I told PMarsh, I'd do this to him. He left them twisting in the wind last year. Turnabout is fair play.

    Of course, I'm mean sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. And the plot thickens...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous5:17 PM

I would think they would have an already set time knowing that the last game of the season was 11/29. But I blog, I don't run a college or a team.

    Jay is a knife twister.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It just doesn't take alot of effort to endorse someone

Maybe they are treating this like "tribal council" from "Survivor" and all of the votes aren't in from the PTB to vote Tuberville off the plains.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Scottie B, got my t-shirt and now wearing it proudly. My 19-yr old daughter wants one! Let me know if you open up orders again. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jay, can you put your own quote on the front page? Payback is hell sometimes and Tubs deserves all he gets after the stunt he pulled last year about going or staying. That stuff hurts you when hard times hit.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jay, as Tubs stated last year, "I concur.!" Let his squirm.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't see how it helps anyone to wait and have this talk, rather than doing it now.

Unless they are talking to other candidates.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Word Jay G..just got my HABOTN shirts in and they look awesome. Hopefully ScottieB will read this post...pass along big ups to him for me. Hearing comments around such as.."This is the most INEPT group of coaches from top to bottom that they have ever seen"..wow..that's pretty endearing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Re-worded slightly again:

Many people speculated that Auburn had made up its mind days before the Iron Bowl that Tuberville would be retained.

The fact that nothing (conclusive) happened today makes me think Auburn is considering its options. That doesn't surprise me. This team was terrible.

Still, the people who insisted this was an open-and-shut case are wrong wrong wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm glad to hear all the positive responses about the shirts!

Wifey faxed our order on Friday, so we're a little behind. I can't wait to get all the Tates robed in HABOTN gear.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So I rushed home today feeling like Ralphie looking for his little orpah annie decoder ring. I finally got to the mailbox and there it was! I rushed inside (bloody cold out there) and ripped open the package and
Scottie the shirt looks great man. Thanks to you and Jay for the work you both put into this..best 15 bucks I've spent..WAR EAGLE

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous5:30 PM

This is totally unsubstantiated, but I heard today that John Gruden was contacted in reference to an opportunity for a job. Could be Auburn, Could be another NFL program, Could be absolute B.S.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Brian Kelly

    Brent Venables

    Jim Leavitt

    Steve Spurrier

Emmmm. wait -- was I doing that out loud?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Scottie, got my shirt today! It is awesome! Thank you for your hard work!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mark, the pugh clip legal or not is not what I expect from an AU player. I really hope new OC or head coach opens all positions up.

Jay what did you think about OC coaching position other than qb.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous5:40 PM

    Meh.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Man, all of a sudden this sounds pretty serious. Could this (Tubs being fired) actually happen? Good grief, this roller coaster ride is making me sick!

    ReplyDelete
  46. They are looking and waiting to hear back from some people. That's the only possible reason for waiting. If everyone on the wish list says "no thanks" then Tubs is retained. If Butch Davis says "I'm interested" then Tubs is gone.

    I think he's gone.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well, maybe someone mentioned that a few of the friggin suck a** coaches on the staff would have to be let go.

Oh and someone got wind that Tuberville thinks there's only a certain "type" player AU can get.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Brian Kelly is high on Washington's list. Also heard there is mutual interest between him & ND

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dear Lord,

Please let Butch Davis be interested.

    Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  50. BTW, Scottie B, I didn't give you my pre-order for a t-shirt, but if it works out that someone who did pre-order doesn't actually send in their order form and payment, I'd like to get one -- a large. Just let me know after a few weeks...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would rather have Brian Kelly than Butch Davis.

    Jim Leavitt? No.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Another thing, I like Kodi. Pulled for him harder than anyone, but I can't sit here and say he is going to be a great QB. He will never be a great QB. It doesn't matter how talented he is. He doesn't have the killer instinct. And I think that is what the coaches have been trying to tell us. That instinct ... you have to have it. JPW has it. Kodi doesn't. He's just not a winner, and that is sad, because I think he is a first rate human being.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I agree with you Jay on the twisting in the wind. Not only did he and the other members of the Lee County/Arkansas Hunting Club leave the admin wondering if they were just gonna stay put in the Natural State, he left us and more importantly potential recruits in the same state of uncertainty. Meanwhile, Saban (now capitalized as a result of the beatdown) was in households laying the foundation for the signing day bloodbath that would come. If they are wondering about a turnaround next year, I predict a season very similar to Tennessee's this year....regardless of who is coaching. There are simply no offensive playmakers on this team and so far, the ones we have committed have done so over offers from schools also not playing in bowls (for the most part). By the way, John Gruden aint leaving a successful NFL gig to come head up this mess.

    ReplyDelete
  54. sorry Barkey, Butch Davis is a much better fit than Kelly.

Ties to FL, NFL street cred and a name to compete with Saban.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm with you Convington. Is this for real? CTT deserves another year..all the good things don't seem that good after a 5-7 year and all the bad things are magnified 10 fold with a 5-7 year. He has run a good program. Has he accomplished what I want for AU?..well not exactly. I want championships but I really think CTT can do it.I want to give him one more year to right the ship and make us relevant again. So I'm gonna start the chant..ONE MORE YEAR! ONE MORE YEAR!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't know if Butch Davis would leave North Carolina.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'll be honest and I'll only say this to AU people but I have my doubts about Tub's ability to win a championship based on his entire record.

    Great defenses but horrible offenses.

Save 2004 and 2005 and its been the same plodding along offensivly.

    ReplyDelete
  58. big props to scottie b...just got my HABOTN wear...it's da bomb!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I understand B4G but if he would, I think AU would benefit greatly.

Think of his connections to the state of FL and recruits who would come.

Also, his NFL stint was more sucessful than Little Nick's.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Folks, I hate to break it to you, but given the quality of the coach on the other side of the state and the rate at which he has turned that program around, our beloved AU aimply is not gonna get a first rate proven guy to leave a good gig and come compete with that. If they run Tubbs, prpepare now to be disappointed with the Lane Kiffin type of hire, which may not be all bad.

    ReplyDelete
  61. If AU ever gets that first national championship, I don't think we would ever look back. It's just a matter of getting that one and that task has been proven pretty difficult. Unless of course your name is Saban and you do it in two years..but I hate Saban so he doesn't count

    ReplyDelete
  62. Lane Kiffen is NOT a disappointment.

    Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Twisting in the wind: bad form
Karma is a you know what...

Why did I click on your pic, Chris? That's more than disturbing.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh yeah, Butch Davis can recruit with the best of them. But a couple of his losses this year were similar to some of the losses Tubs pulls every year.

    ReplyDelete
  65. By the way Phred, youre dead on about our QB. I have said all season his number needs to be changed to an 81 (as in wide receiver).

    ReplyDelete
  66. No Chris he's not, but other than a coordinator at media darling USC, what's his resume?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Sorry Monica.

The way you felt after seeing that is the way I feel Auburn was treated.

After two weeks to prepare, we get beat 36-0 by our friggin arch -rival?

    Nice.

Guys, as far as the QB is concerned, the coach has thrown the ENTIRE program's fate behind KB.

And this is what we've gotten for it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. A great resume' doesn't win ball games.

    Great football players do.

A great recruiting staff gets great football players.

Excitement. Pure excitement is what Tennessee fans have to look forward to.

When any program is winning, notice how many players they have called out on draft day.

His recruiting record at USC is tough to argue with -- IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  69. War tiger, your chant is the problem.
    One more year.

    ReplyDelete
  70. okay so I checked flight aware and nothing seemed to jump off the radar (pardon the pun) at me as far as flights in or out of AUO regional airport...

    ReplyDelete
  71. the problem?? i'm confused?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous6:01 PM

It takes a real winner to pay off Reggie Bush's parents and Matt Leinart's girlfriend/baby mama.

    ReplyDelete
  73. CHirs..a great resume is winning ball games..

    ReplyDelete
  74. Chris, you could build a pretty good recruiting record at USC if you were hired. It's a monopoly over there.

    ReplyDelete
  75. you say that like you have something against greedy parents and baby/mama's.

    just messin'

    ReplyDelete
  76. Since reading about Tuberville's last press conference and not hearing anything today, I am beginning to feel he is gone too. I still wouldn't call it likely, but if we don't hear something within the next couple of days, I am certain of it.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Anonymous6:04 PM

You know how I roll, Phred.

    How about that live campfire?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I think that Lane Kiffin is the future Mike Shula of the SEC...however, the fact that me may get Monte Kiffin (pops) to call the shots on D would be a significant upgrade compared to Joe Kinds.

    ReplyDelete
  79. did someone say campfire??? I havent made the past couple. heck yeah i am down...

    ReplyDelete
  80. Oh no, please tell me we're not tracing flights already!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I am glad to see that the rose colored glasses many wore with regard to Burns have come off. Yes, he scrambles well, but in effect, he hasn't done as good of a job passing the ball as Todd did throwing with a wet noodle.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I second la campfire! ONE MORE YEAR!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Uhh, "tracking" flights. :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. As sung by Willie Nelson ... "greedy parents don't let your daughters grow up to be girlfriend/baby mama's"

    ReplyDelete
  85. Am I the only one that thinks CTT should stay and Kodi is the future?!

    ReplyDelete
  86. was anyone else annoyed with Tuberville's comments about how he "knows the type player we can get here" ??

    I'm still a bit miffed.

What "type" player do you guys think he was talking about?

What is it about AU that keeps us from getting great football players?

    ReplyDelete
  87. The more I think about this season, the more I am convinced that we could have won a lot more games with Doug Barfield as the HC or OC. Now, that is saying something.

    ReplyDelete
  88. The more I think about this season, the more convinced I am that I really should quit wasting my time thinking about this season.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Well, the 3-2 Miss St game should have been a loss.

Had that game gone the way it SHOULD have gone, we're not having this conversation.

Muschamp would have been contacted ---- wait, that may be why he's a "coach in waiting".

    ReplyDelete
  90. Look I see what he is lack but I don't know what it is..it's like the big play could happen every time he gets the ball..he earned some licks this year as did alot of the young players but the sun did come up and there is always next year. Why trash it all b/c of one lousy year. Hell I grew up this year..I usually agree with most of what is posted here but right now some of you sound like bama fans..

    ReplyDelete
  91. wartiger, I believe CTT should stay assuming he says the right things to the Jays. If he blames the season on others or injuries, I would kick him out on his arse. If he accepts responsibility and comes up with a reasonable plan to fix the situation, I would give him another year. That being said, my criteria for him staying after next season would be at least 8 wins and possibly 9.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Do we want the next HC to have to rebuild from the ground up or give him a shot with at least SOME talenty left?

    B. Trotter needs to get a real shot next year.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Great pic Ph Phred...

    ReplyDelete
  94. What about who needs to be gone from the staff.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Covington...it's always plane season at the Robert G Pitts Auburn/Opelika Airport.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Every QB, including Cotton, should get a real shot next season. Burns can still be a great QB, but he needs a lot of work. The second most memorable play from the IB was the slow motion hug sack.

    ReplyDelete
  97. totally agree steve..and now my turn to sound like a bama fan..I was thinking 9 or 10 mins at least..trip to ATL..in that area

    ReplyDelete
  98. Anonymous6:17 PM

    ReplyDelete
  99. Chris_In_Inverness, the new OC or HC should decide on the rest of the staff. We really don't know enough to make that call. I do suspect Knox should be given the opportunity to find alternate employment, but I cannot say for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Steve...i agree. That could be his only chance..explain who could overcome this injury, that injury, your injury, my injury, our injury, etc etc etc. You know what the Jays response would be? Saban can..hehe:) I guess if you fire him, is there a proven coach that is better?

    ReplyDelete
  101. I meant *wins..and I have seen some Cotton tape..kids impressive..I still think Kodi graduates a starter barring an injury

    ReplyDelete
  102. fire!
    Fire!
    FIRE!
    no no i mean
    ONE MORE YEAR!!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I can see the difficulty that Franklin faced. Todd wasn't great, but he could make good decisions and manage to get the ball where it needed to be, but he wasn't a threat to make a game breaking play passing or running.

Then you have Kodi who has the ability to make big plays running or passing, but doesn't know the offense well enough to get the consistency to maintain long drives.

It is a very difficult situation to be in.

    Tim, what's your source?

    ReplyDelete
  107. wartiger, i meant one more year is all we would get from ctt then we go through this all over again.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Where does it say that's from Jay G?

And what 5 star recruit has Auburn on the top of their list? None that I know of.

Wow, Lane Kiffin's wife is hot.

    ReplyDelete
  109. A couple of things...

First, wasn't Tuberville supposedly heading out to recruit and therefore unavailable to meet with JJ or Gogue prior to Tuesday? Do I take it that he is not actually on the road but is in Auburn/on campus? If that is in fact the case, then yeah, the percentages on his departure are up in a big way. (GOOD!)

Second, I'd like to see people stop writing off Kodi Burns. After the young man gets some actual coaching is the time to evaluate his potential, not before. Those writing him off under this staff ought recall the way a great many AU fans wrote off Ben Leard after 1998.

Kodi Burns may or may not ever be a good/great SEC starting QB, but unless and until he gets a chance to work with a coach that can bring along a QB, deciding that he is a bust is simply not smart.

    ReplyDelete
  110. wartiger, sorry if I sound like a bammer, but this is my wiew: if AU makes the change, we take some sure-fire growing pains starting over with a new coach. But there is a chance 2 years from now the program could be in the upper tier conference teams again. Not saying that will happen, but it could. If CTT is kept I see no way that happens, and things could get even worse. He says the team has no playmakers, but has preached for several years recruiting is better than ever, and the program is in better shape than ever. Do you see anything from the last 2 seasons to make you believe either of those statements? Making a change is risky, but I still say not making one is even more risky.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Tuberville is on campus, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  112. It was Jay Coulter. There seems to be a Jay conspiracy running through the state.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I don't even know who Jay Coulter is.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hey, maybe the next coach should be named Jay to keep with the trend.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Word here in Auburn is they will meet this week. BUT take that for what it's worth....not much.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I have seen the name before. I thought he was a sports writer but maybe he is a blogger. I may be misspelling his name. I think there is an I in there somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Oh, they'll be meeting soon.

Tuberville won't let it drag on.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Mark - Regarding the block. Its a minor point with the AU world melting down around us, but I'd still like to talk about it; hopefully somebody on here really knows the rule - most people don't, and I'm not sure that I do.

There is a zone within which both clipping and blocking below the waist is legal. It is different at every level, and I don't know the rule on the college level, and they change it all the time too. I think the zone is 8 yards by 6 yards, and if it is, then it appears the bama player is within the zone. He could have been blocked from behind, and he could have been blocked below the waist, but I'm not sure that it could be both. In other words, I'm not sure that you can clip below the waist even in the zone. Does anybody really know, and I mean KNOW on the NCAA level?

I don't think you can clip below the waist even in the zone according to current rules. If that's correct, it should have been a 15 yd penalty.

Whatever it was, it was a lousy block that didn't even get the bama guy down. He would have been much more effective to hit him high and he could have easily knocked him down. I doubt there was any intent to hurt anybody; just poor technique, and very consistent with the rest of our play in the game.

Getting no endorsement today doesn't look good for Tubs.

I fear the decade-long death spiral that Mr. S mentioned weeks ago.

Jay Coulter's knowledge of what is going on at Auburn consists of him reading either the Montgomery Advertiser or the Birmingham News. He had what may be the worst morning sports talk show of all time in 2005/2006.

You do a excellent job on this sight and I commend you. I think?
you have said in the past that you are not an Auburn fan??
I just wanted to know if you feel the same anxiety as we do?
Does it not seem crazy that we have to pay BIG $$$ to get rid of a coach? Why don't the PTB reward them for winning?
    PP'
I personally think KB has potential it just might take him too many years to live up to it.

  127. "He thinks it's unfair to leave Tuberville twisting in the wind, so to speak."

    Jay,

What did PMarsh say to your response to this?

Seriously, I'm afraid the truth is that in a world of Tuberville vs Saban, we'll come up on the short end of everything football related. Our coach may possibly be a better person, a better ambassador and better with the kids academics...however as far as coaching, recruiting & getting a team ready for Saturday Saban will out work and out hustle Tommy.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Roman, you win the award today for things that make me go "huh?"

I can't believe you just used Ben Leard as your example of what a QB can be if he works hard enough.

    ReplyDelete
  130. If 9 or 10 wins is the criteria, better run him now. Where are the playmakers folks? It took Borges to figure out that you could do better if Caddy and Ronnie were in the backfield together, but those guys made plays before their senior year. Are our wideouts suddenly going to figure out how to get open and then blow the defenders doors off en route to the endzone? Delusionality breeds dissapointment and I for one have had plenty of that this year. Not trying to be a total killjoy, just realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I'm firing up a campfire for kicks ...

    ReplyDelete
  132. How about deciding the HC position with a more rational approach. Have Tuberville and Franklin wrestle for it in a wring at the center of Jordan Hare. We can pack the stands and add some seating on the field. I bet we could get over 100,000 spectators at $60/ticket and pay off the buyout. By the way, it shouldn't be a singled fall match. First man to, say,.... 36 pins wins.

  136. First, Tub said we don't have play makers.

Second, yes. He said recruiting is going great.

But guys, you must understand.....Auburn can only get a certain "type" recruit. Which means he's a 3 star guy or a guy no one else offered.

That being said, we shouldn't even fool with the other players. They're not Tub's "TYPE".

  137. It would be against beat writer code of conduct for Jay to "come out of the closet" (so to spreak) as an Auburn fan mdaniel.

I can't believe you just used Ben Leard as your example of what a QB can be if he works hard enough.

Leard pulled Tuberville's fat out of the fire against Appy State in Tuberville's first game at AU and went on to have a hecukva season in 1999 and again in 2000 (at least when he wasn't hurt.) I can't believe you're dissing Ben Leard.

  141. LOL at the link Mr. Sensible - But he's not available right now; too busy feuding with Mr. Sulu over not being invited to his gay wedding.

Guess nobody currently around knows the rule on the free blocking zone. I doubt that many outside of line coaches and officials really know it, but there are all sort of folks ready to accuse AU of a chop block, even though they have no idea of what a chop block is.
