Nutt soon faces the music

Looks like Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt will become the first coach to earn money from the Auburn Coaching Search 2008.

He met with athletic director Pete Boone and university president Robert Khayat earlier this morning. They have discussed financial matters.

Nutt makes approximately $1.7 million right now. He's now in line for a significant raise.

Nutt is expected to meet with reporters in Oxford after the Rebels' practice today. The team, which finished the regular season 8-4, is preparing for a bowl game.

  2. I am so glad we got played on this one. So glad.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hooray. Day 3, here we come.

    ReplyDelete
  4. When do you think we will find out Auburn's new coach?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Great news...now all we need is our coach.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I predict this goes down next week. Later in the week.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Jay who are your front runners now?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Alabama made lots of coaches multi- millionaires..

    It's Auburn's time now.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Jay -- Is Tub's helping in this process.

And, would he speak highly of the job?

    Does he know Davis?

I KNOW Larry Lacewell knows Davis but Jimmie Johnson is who CTT has always mentioned when asked about his style.

    ReplyDelete
  10. So Tubs is like the HCIL (Head-Coach-In-Leaving)?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Tub was on the same staff with Butch Davis from 86-88.

    ReplyDelete
  12. is Tubbs like watching Judge Judy on a treadmill, eating 10:00 lunches at the catfish house, with his rascal attached to the back of his pickup, the picture of him holding that little dog, made me have this mental image of him, its so different than HC Tommy, ???

    ReplyDelete
  13. RK -- Did you see that players list from Davis' time as HC in Miami?

Also, some of those 86-88 teams were OK i guess.

May be a pipe dream but if moeny's not going to be a restriction.......jus sayin

    ReplyDelete
  14. So Jay who's still on the list now? I'm assuming Nutt and Leach are officially off at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well PD'sWT --- That's EXACTLY who was Auburn's head football coach.

That's who he is and that's who was let go,.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tubs hates the boosters, the boosters hate him, right? Why would he recommend this job?

Wasn't his relationship with Jay Jacobs rough as well?

    ReplyDelete
  17. chris, most people doubt butch davis because Tennessee couldn't pry him away. If they coudln't do it, we probably couldn't either.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Per the B'ham News guy -- Leach not being considered.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe Tubbs, Franklin and Borges can meet for breakfast and have a power walk around the neighborhood before they cash their checks daily at Colonial Bank.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tubs could speak highly of the job 'til he's blue in the face but the fact of the matter is that there are approximately 5.1 million reasons for him to speak highly of the job. Whether Tubs speaks highly of it is irrelevant because the writing is on the wall. Has been since, oh, November of 2003.

Auburn has internal issues that have kept one particular coach (at least one) from even considering returning to Auburn. Auburn's administration is about as self-aware of these issues as a skunk is of its own smell.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So if we hire CTT back, does he still get to keep the $5.1 million buyout of the other contract?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Chris,

Those players that Davis had at Miami and that he left for Coker were all top level college players.

Also, Davis kept Miami clean when he was down there too.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tubbs just bought wood whittling equipment, plans on building bird houses and traveling to craft shows to sell them.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't think TENN is a better job.

UF & UGA every year and no recruiting base unless its nationally.

Not an easy place to recruit to and not a great talent base in state.

AU's got Bammer & LSU but I think the ability to get better players can be interesting.

My only question is whywould a guy like Davis stay at a school where football's a distant 2nd fiddle?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Can anyone actually keep Miami clean?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dog the bounty hunter could keep Miami clean, with his mace on his hip...oh you mean the football team...maybe

    ReplyDelete
  27. YES --- Bucth Davis graduated players and kept Miami very very clean!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've never listed Mike Leach.

He wasn't anything more than a tertiary (beyond peripheral) consideration. Talk about a poor fit at Auburn.

Muschamp isn't happening. I told you all that before.

Fisher is a real candidate. They're gauging interest for several people through Bill Carr, the consultant.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My only question is whywould a guy like Davis stay at a school where football's a distant 2nd fiddle?

So he could do the job he loves without looking over his shoulder to see which of the BOT is trying to stab him this year? Just a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't think Tuberville's relationship with boosters was eroded. Just some of them.

    ReplyDelete
  31. What a cool job Bill Carr has, am I right.

    ReplyDelete
  32. For some reason ESPN is still reporting that Auburn and Mike Leach are talking.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hate to be a hater, but I think UT is clearly a better job. They have successfully recruited nationally the last ten years, they have a 100,000 + stadium, they are the prime school in their state (all things that Auburn is not), and LSU/bama vs florida/GA schedule is about a wash. Plus they have a history of being patient with head coaches.

To an impartial observer, UT is better.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I heard Tubbs was mad because the Yella wood on his new deck was rotting...mmmmm

    ReplyDelete
  35. Jay, is Leach not a "fit" at Auburn for reasons other than his ability to coach?

    If so, there's Auburn's problem.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Posted in previous thread:

I have a question for the HABOTN nation. I understand Jimmy Sexton represents Houston Nutt. What other coach that could or would be interested in coming to Auburn is on his client list?

    just something to think about....

    some of the answers posted:
    Tuberville,Spurrier,Fulmer,Nutt
    Beamer,Saban, Muschamp, Fisher,
    Kiffin

    Any more to add?

    ReplyDelete
  37. If he's happy winning 8 games and not competing on the largest stage in college football, well, his ego isn't what a major college football HC's ego should be.

    Just a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I guess PMarsh's comments that if he were a betting man he'd put everything on either Fisher or Nutt had dropped down to putting it all on Fisher.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think Leach's personallity and his love of his own intelligence wouldn't fly too well at Auburn.

I don't think his offense would do very well over time in the SEC.

Plus imagine the outrage when he gives up 50 or 60 in a game at Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sexton represents Butch Davis.

Tennessee USED to recruit nationally but don't now.

Its much easier to recruit locally on both the coahes and the players.

Having 12000 more people in the stands isn't that big a deal to me I don't think.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It is fun to read the stories and people's guesses, but we have to remember that even inside sources get lied to and manipulated. Thus, I would take anything Jay or Marshall or Goldberg or anyone says with a grain of salt (by no fault of their own). Many false leads will occur, and who knows where the carousel will end up on. We won't know till Auburn makes the announcement.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Leach is not a fit because he is a bit left of center and the conservative AU fan base would have a conniption fit and fall in it the moment he started talking crazy in public

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jay would it be inappropriate to send a Honey Baked Ham to Tubbs house?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Griff, homes, chilling in the Caribbean during the off-season isn't the way things work in the SEC.

    That's not what Auburn wants.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nationally UT is regarded as a better football program than Auburn with better facilities and the advantage of being a state school.

    ReplyDelete
  46. His personality won't fit in Auburn. Exactly. We need a "yes" man. Nevermind that the guy can coach.

Oh, and I'd take giving up 60 in one game if it meant winning the other 11.

    ReplyDelete
  47. chris:

    UT Football
    6 National Titles
    16 conference titles

    ReplyDelete
  48. Being a state school is an advantage if you have great HS players in state.

Being UT makes it harder to go into other states to recruit in the south.

    Being AU not so much.

Not to be argumenative but where have you seen that UT's a better program than AU?

I don't remember the wild scramble of coaches throwning them, selves at UT last month.

    ReplyDelete
  49. How many times has Leach won 11? Once, or one time less than Tub has won 11.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Being a state school also means more money to spend, a larger national name, larger resources. It just doesn't mean people in that state love you because you share the same name.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Leach = ZZZZZZ
    UT = 5'3 Kenny Chesney

    ReplyDelete
  52. michael...

Is UT a better program than Florida or Georgia or LSU?

    6 tiles -- one since what, 1950?

They have that advantage over a few schools in the SEC but when it comes to HS kids who win college football games -- that's like saying World War II

    ReplyDelete
  53. Fisher would probably leave FSU to be a HC at Auburn rather than sit around and wait for Bowden to retire/die.

From what I understand Fisher really likes the Auburn area and his wife is an AU grad and would love to come back here as the HC.

I agree with all this but how much pressure would daddy bowden put on him to stay. Would he use the "I gave you the keys to FSU" card

    ReplyDelete
  54. Is there a wild scramble for people throwing themselves at the Auburn job?

I love Auburn as much or more than the next person, but we have more disadvantages than Tennessee does overall. We seem to overcome that.

    ReplyDelete
  55. "Help me get to the NFL"

That's what a players in high school wants to hear.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yeah, Leach is (at least) 3rd fiddle in an area of Texas where UT and Oklahoma get the pick of the litter.

Let's get us a good ol' boy, kahki-pants wearin', orange and blue tie havin', solider hard fightin', paper shaker shakin' yes man whose philosophy is 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Tenn does have Dollywood and Gatlingburg, pretty nice, The Ripleys museum has the 1960's batmobile, so yea, UT has the edge no doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  58. We won't find out for sure until right after bowl season

    ReplyDelete
  59. "I agree with all this but how much pressure would daddy bowden put on him to stay. Would he use the "I gave you the keys to FSU" card"

Fisher could just come back with "Auburn wants me to coach right now".

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm not saying its better but I am SAYING its on par.

What's different about the UT job search and AU"s?

Players win football games --- its not easier to get players to UT than AU.

    ReplyDelete
  61. You guys are having your own little battle, Andre the Giant vs. Hulk at the Dome, get it on...

    ReplyDelete
  62. I've read Fisher's buyout went up to 5 mil after the flirtaion with WVU

    ReplyDelete
  63. Put Leach's offense up against an SEC D every week, see how quickly they figure it out and how often he wins 11.

That's without considering how his personality would go over with everyone involved, including the fan base.

I just don't think he's that great of a coach and I think he's a horrible fit for Auburn...and it doesn't really matter since he's not going to be Auburn's coach.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hey, like Vincent Vega and Jules Winfield.....I respect you and everything Mr Wolf....I just ain't agreeing.

I gotta go back to work.

I've just swung by to get some INFO.

    Laters

    ReplyDelete
  65. Chris, we'll agree to disagree on this one. I don't think the gap is as big as the one between Auburn and Alabama (throwing up now), but UT is the more prestigious program to the layperson. Doesn't mean we don't totally own them, though.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Leach is having a great year this year. I would urge everyone to look at the last time bammer was in the cotton bowl and faced leach. As bad as bammer was they shut down his vaunted big 12 offense and won.

Leach at Auburn= The Hindenburg and Titanic all in one.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Chris,

I'm just going to agree to disagree with you.

I feel that nationally UT is a more attractive job than Auburn for the reasons I have already mentioned.

I hate UT and love Auburn, but nationally I see their job as being more attractive.

You don't see it that way. It's cool.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Now that Chris has gone back to work, let's all call him a retard and totally trash him.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I cant Chris is my boss......

    just kidding..

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm afraid Jimbo will be the guy. We are in a world of hurt. Tubby did this to himself w/ the coaching turnover and putting his name out for every job opening. Now AU is left to find a coach from where? Athletic dept is dysfunctional, can't lead, can't manage.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Chris, you are pretty stupid to think UT isn't a better sounding job to Butch Davis. Keep living in your little dream world, you idiot.

You are about as cool as that crappy ending to the Sopranos. hHw fitting.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Chris is a retard...Chris is a retard...

    ReplyDelete
  73. Chris is a retard...Chris is a retard...

    ReplyDelete
  74. I change my prediction about Jan 8 announcement. If Jay G feels like it goes next week, then next week it is. He generally bases his predictions on both his experience and knowledge of his sources. I, however, like most message board dwellers, like to use supposition and rumor. I will never, ever, stoop, I promise, to the I have a source who knows someone that (fill in the blank) and they say (fill in the blank).

My feeling on those folks is that even if they know who they say they know, they are given information second hand by someone who has an agenda themselves. They are getting played and don't realize it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't know but jimbo fisher doesn't sound that great to me. Why hasn't his offenses at florida state done anything the past two years? I know he did well at LSU for the most part, but saban had his hands all over that offense like everything else in his programs.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Chris is dumb. I mean what do you expect from a guy who doesn't see the obvious appeal of Dollywood and hearing Rocky Top 2000 times per quarter in a game.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I guess y'all are right. He was good enough for Bob Stoops, but not Auburn.

    C'mon Jimbo!

    ReplyDelete
  78. The only positive I see about Jimbo is that he may bring a lot of ex AU guys in to coach. Stacy Searls OL, Tracy Rocker DL. Dameyun Craig ?. Maybe we would have a cohesive staff we could all get behind.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Chris doesn't realize that the constantly overcast days in Knoxville make it virtually impossible to get sunburned. This is very important to a guy like Butch Davis.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hey Monica, whatever happened to that crush you had on the Minnesota dude?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hmmm, I have been busy with work so I missed some of this saga, but it doesn't sound like Nutt is out of the running. Ole Miss cannot compete in terms of salary with Auburn.

My guess is Jimbo would be the favorite at the moment and I am with Jay in thinking we will now something late next week, or possibly the week after. I seriously doubt they let this draw out until next year. Bama would have never done that with Saban if they hadn't got the shaft from Rod.

    ReplyDelete
  82. pdwt - if tubs is going to do some whittling and woodworking, he may lose a few of those fingers that the bammers hated so much

if he does chop one off with a table saw, maybe jacobs could sell it through tigers unlimited

    ReplyDelete
  83. Plus, another knock against Leach, he is going to bolt and take over Somalia. The pirating there is really picking up and they are looking to shell out some big bucks to get a guy who can not only bring home some tankers but grab a few cruise ships as well.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Ever been to a UT game in Knoxville. There are people like that in Alabama, but they don't go to football game!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. WarEagleRK, I like your point about Rocky Top. That was a great song the first 10,000 times I heard it. Now it seems more like some torture device the Germans may have used.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Griff,

If I said Mike Leach is a football God and the smartest man in America but not a good fit for a conservative southern school because he's batstuff crazy and his gimmick offense would get exposed in the SEC over time, would that make you feel better?

I mean I did say the "Mike Leach is a football God and the smartest man in America" first, so that makes everyone feel better, right?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Rocky Top... Brings visions to mind......Like Deliverance..

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ron,

I think Jimbo's offense haven't been the best (they lead the ACC in scoring this year though) the past couple of years mainly because of academic scandal, arrests and suspensions have killed any continuity he has been able to have and the fact that I don't think Bowden cares anymore.

If we get Fisher, I hope none of the above is his fault.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Jay. You know what Jimbo's contract obligations are? What is his buyout. Lowder just got 550 Million from our Gov.. so I'm sure it doesn't matter.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Rocky Top is even worse when you live in the state and have to deal with those people.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I do not see Leach as a primary contender. Him having ties to Tony "I am an idiot" Franklin doesn't help matters. If Leach became the head coach, it would be the most radical departure in terms of football philosophy that I can imagine happening at Auburn. He is a possibility, but I wouldn't think him the most likely candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Leach having ties to Hal Mumme and the problems that went on at Kentucky don't help him either.

However we hired Franklin despite that before.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Leach.. No way is a candidate. We would bring back spitting lou holtz first. Ties not only to Franklin, but Hal Mumme as well. He just got fired for losing and, get this, trouble w/ players off the field. Can't imagine Hal not running a tight ship!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Nothing happened to my crush. I'm still crushing on him.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Urban Meyer's gimmick offense seems to be doing well at UF. You know, the gimmick offense that everyone said would never work in the SEC against the salty SEC defenses.

Look, I want a guy who wins. Not just wins, but puts a lot of points on the board in doing so.

We can settle for Jimbo, though. He's a good ol' boy. He won't ruffle the BOT's feathers or those of its favorite puppet, Jay Jacobs. Let's be a proving ground for a 1st year HC.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Monica. Crush on me. Look at my pic. I'm nice and spongy. Pretty square too.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Agreed RK, like I said yesterday, growing up in TN, I almost began to hate UT fans more than Bama fans.

Now I'm pretty apathetic towards UT and would even kind of like to see them step up again, especially to rival UGA and UF.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Fisher's buyout is $2.5 million.

    ReplyDelete
  99. What the heck does ties to Franklin have to do with anything? He has ties to Bob Stoops, too. Stoops' OC in '99.

    ReplyDelete
  100. My comments on Leach have nothing to do with how much the BOT would like him or not like him. I don't think he'd be a favorite of theirs, but my comments are based on my perception of his personality and his coaching style.

That being said, he's not coming so it's not that big of a deal.

Glad you like him, I'm sure he's an entertaining fellow.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Griff. I think that was Leach that was Stoops OC in 99. Stoops says Leach is a great offensive mind, but never adds any additional comments about other aspects of him or his coaching ability. Why would he. He owns Leach. Usually hammers them by 25 points +

    ReplyDelete
  102. Griff,

    Are you indeed Mike Leach?

    Just asking.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I'm not sure its Meyer's offense as much as it is the players. I think he stresses speed and athleticism as much as he does an offensive system. With all due respect to most of the SEC East, but Bama will be the first good defense they have seen since Ole Miss or UT.

The only reason they killed UT was UT's ridiculously inept offense. I still think the Gators will put up points on Bama, but they'll have to work a lot harder to do it than they have been.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Leach was on a staff with Tony Franklin that the NCAA drilled back around 2000.

Mumme's ran up some huge numbers his first couple of years in the SEC and but never big yearly win totals. They scored tons and gave up tons and apparently violated several NCAA rules along the way.

Leach has the stain of that on him. Maybe he had nothing to do with those infractions at all.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Bama beats UF by 10. It's destiny, as much as I hate to say that. 1992 all over again. Is this groundhog day?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I do not know how to link this so I will post. Please note section e of jimbo fishers contract admendment.

    http://vmedia.rivals.com/uploads/1061/581297.pdf

Seems he may not be the one.

    ReplyDelete
  107. JayG, I hear JF buyout is $2.5 mil.

If you have the sources you say you have, tell them to keep to these 3 names: Kelly, Fisher, and Johnson. Anything else will be a poor fit for AU.

One ?. I believe, but I want your source. Was the MAJOR issue CTT's Assistants or was it MORE of CTT didn't want to battle the outside forces anymore and start over with possibly 2 coordinators?

    ReplyDelete
  108. I know Leach was Stoops' OC in '99. That's what I was saying. Others have said no way on Leach because of "ties to Franklin."

No, RK, I'm not Mike Leach.

Also, if you're trying to compare the talent levels between OU and Texas Tech (Texas friggin' TECH), then there's really no discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  109. buyout of a head coach in waiting being 2.5 million is ridiculous, but we just paid a coach who technically resigned 5+ million. Lowder really knows how to spend that bailout money doesn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  110. The only thing worse than Muschamp love is Mike Leach Love.

    ReplyDelete
  111. but are you sponge worthy?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Lord Monica...

    Gratuitous Seinfeld reference # 323

    ReplyDelete
  113. But as I read further it seems he can terminate this contract with a 2.5 mil payment 45 days after termination. But he is not supposed to look for a job. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  114. Mon.. Very good. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  115. Denny, we disagree on Leach but we agree on Muschamp.

My first choice is Saban, to be honest.

My first legitimate choice is Butch Davis.

My first choice of someone who'd actually come to Auburn is Mike Leach.

Jimbo Fisher is not on my radar. Nor is Paul Johnson.

    Welcome to Auburn, Coach Calloway!

    ReplyDelete
  116. ever since the mike leach scare, muschamp doesn't sound that bad to me anymore. But i would rather have mike price than mike leach honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  117. well come on! Y'all can't set me up like that and not expect me to knock 'em outta the park!

    Sheesh. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  118. "if you're trying to compare the talent levels between OU and Texas Tech (Texas friggin' TECH), then there's really no discussion."

There was a day that could have been said about Alabama or Georgia and Auburn...then Pat Dye was hired.

Leach has the advantage of working in the state with the largest amount of HS football players that play division 1-A football in America, surely some of them play defense the he could have recruited over time.

Anyway, I'm done bashing a guy who won't be here anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Just say NO to Saban.....

    ReplyDelete
  120. Mon...did you like the fact that I chided you for the Seinfeld reference when I have one in my name above?...

    LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I know it was a joke, but if we hired Neil Calloway then we'd be worse homers than Bama hiring Shula.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Got some information on Brian Kelly ...

His wife, Paqui, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. He has been adamant about working at a school featuring a world-class cancer center.

Cincinnati has that. Auburn does not.

Is that a deal-breaker? I have no idea, but it's something to consider.

    ReplyDelete
  123. My point was do you need one if he is one, Mon?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Davis... Not coming. Muschamp.. not coming. Nutt....Not coming. Leach.....not going to be offered. Fisher... Problems w/ contract, but maybe. Johnson....not coming Pool of good candidates that don't already have a job better that the AU job is getting small..

    ReplyDelete
  125. BlogTom,

Right now I'd say anything is still negotiable, even with those who it seems may not be coming.

Well except Leach or Nutt who aren't coming.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Kristina, i'm reusable too. arghhh.

    ReplyDelete
  127. LAWD Kristina......

    This is a family blog....

    ReplyDelete
  128. Griff, Meyer has been altering his offense at Florida since he got there to better fit the environment, which is what a good coach does (Franklin take note), so the question would be if Leach would do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Which is why i didnt actually say it, faker.

    ReplyDelete
  130. WareagleRK. Just tellin what I'm hearin. Jerry Faust is still lookin. He of Notre Dame ilk.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Guys/Gals:

I know this is an Auburn blog, but permit me this linkage about Terrence Cody, who is probably my favorite Bama player in the last 25 years...He's overcome a lot....

    Cody

    ReplyDelete
  132. Are there any NFL-connected candidates on the radar? I've heard Cowher and Gruden, but I'd be pretty quick to dismiss those.

    ReplyDelete
  133. JG,

the Kirklin Clinic in Bham is one of the top Cancer centers too, and it is only 1.5 hrs away.

I'm sure there are a lot of reasons coaches have for leaving or staying.

thought...it is HARD to believe that the powers at AU would cut CTT loose UNLESS they had a coach with = ability already lined up. That's why I believe JJ more than your peers (who seem to not believe as much as u do about AU administrators).

    ReplyDelete
  134. No, faker you are not allowed to post any bama references no matter how sweet and interesting an article it might be. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  135. Cody changed the whole Bama defense. Big pickup for them.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Kristina that sent me into overload. The response were popping into my mind so fast I was dizzy.

    ReplyDelete
  137. ..trust me. Bill Cowher would never think about the AU job. I have a source for him.

He will be back in the NFL shortly.

i have to laugh at those around me that bring his name up.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I'm out. War eagle all. (Lebo to replace TT. u heard it here first)

    ReplyDelete
  139. eaglesteeler ... No matter how much craziness we encounter during the next few days or weeks, your second point is very important.

If there's one thing I know about Auburn, it's that Important People have a plan and a backup plan and a backup backup plan when it comes to football.

They had Tuberville locked down a month before he was introduced in 1998. Reporters, me included, spent a month chasing false leads.

I suspect we're seeing a redux right now.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Do not underestimate the probability of Auburn going Nutts. Think about it. Not only do we get a respected coach, but we also don't have to face him. That isn't even to mention that advantage of having the coach with the most psychotic look in major college football. Forget fearing the thumb, fear the Nutt.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Also, I'm aiming for a campfire tonight.

I'm headed for Atlanta now. I'll be eating with the Alabama beat guys (hopefully) when I arrive and I'll be campfire-ready around 10 p.m.

If you don't see the chat here, you know where to go.

  142. THanks Jay - safe travels.

  143. Hold on the ----

Michael put the OOOSH in Douche.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Ditto JayG...

And if they expected him to stay, they STILL had an idea of WHO ELSE, just in case.

I hope you can get a CHristmas breather soon....

    ReplyDelete
  145. Steve,

Ole Miss has bumped Nutt up to 2.5 mil per year. I don't think we're going in that direction, probably never were. It was just something set up by Nutt and Sexton to get more money his way.

Time to go get some food and hang with the wife. I might be back later or drop by the campfire depending on whats going on.

    ReplyDelete
  146. A nice chilly Friday night by the campfire....

    ReplyDelete
  147. I have just been named the new coach.

You can quote me as the source on that, Jay.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Safe travels Jay and Roll Tide.

    ReplyDelete
  149. michael, any chance of you hiring Jan Terri as your offensive coordinator?

    ReplyDelete
  150. I had totally forgot about Junior and Lulu...

    ReplyDelete
  151. Wonder if there is any truth to Auburn officials meeting with Strong over in Atlanta...

    ReplyDelete
  152. After Alabama shocks the world tomorrow and beats UF, the AU power brokers will be willing to pay top dollar to get a big name coach here ASAP.

    ReplyDelete
  153. A. I have Cowher on hold for my San Diego Chargers.

    B. Tuberville had been ID'd in 1997 for the Auburn job ... Bowden backed into ATL to push it back a year.

    C. That makes me think they've ID'd the coach again a year ago.

so then, it makes me think: a) Muschamp, and having to wait to make sure that the Horns don't back into the BCS game, or b) Petrino. Remember there was a report about raising 16-17 million in the Bham News (maybe it was in Scarbo's column). That would be the total for Tubs' buyout and Petrino's escape.

I think a lot of what we're hearing is the misinformation wagon running at full speed.

I'll be surprised if it's not one of these two ... and I'll let Fisher in on the game because I know he was a fair haired child to them years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I go out of town, and it's gone stark raving mad.

Monica, I thought you were in charge.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Ate -- I just think Muschy's out.

What do you think about the Tubs', Jimmy Johnson - Butch Davis connections.

    I'm praying.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I'm not writing Muschamp out yet ... a lot of folks on the edges ... I'm here in Dallas ... they don't think he's leaving ... but everything he's said, leaves a little loophole.

Of course that could be my wishful thinking.

Butch would be OK, so would Paul Johnson. I would prefer them over Jimbo.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Jet! I promise I tried. This bunch of hooligans don't listen to me. I try to model good behavior for them, but do you think they appreciate it? Nooooo...

    :-)

I think your theories are very, very interesting on Muschamp and Petrino.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Just FYI... our former assist coaches that are still contacting recruits are really putting in some work! Yesterday we lost the 4* WR and today thanks to the assistants he is back. They are doing a good job of reminding these kids that they committed to an ideal/belief that is Auburn and not just a coach. Kudos for them!!! I hope the new HC keeps a few like Willis.

    ReplyDelete
  159. My preferred candidates in no particular order: Paul Johnson, Brian Kelly, Butch Davis

Guys I don't want but could live with: Leach, Jimbo, Muschamp, Charlie Strong

    No. Please no: Petrino

NO! ARE YOU EFFIN KIDDING ME!!??!! NO!!! - Houston Nutt

    ReplyDelete
  160. Greg Maddox to retire monday -- anyone seen this?

    ReplyDelete
  161. Sorry to see that defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads has apparently bailed already. I'd hoped he might stick around and maybe get some consideration for keeping his position as DC from the next head coach.

Hugh Nall declining to help out during the transition is something I understand and in fact am glad to see. I'm not sure AU could have taken much of his kind of help during the transition. These coaches (Nall and Rhoads) are still being paid...seems like they ought to have to do something to earn it. After all, their employer was AU even if their direct boss was Tuberville.

    ReplyDelete
  162. You think they should rake leaves, Roman?

    ReplyDelete
  163. sneaky, M/michael

    ReplyDelete
  164. hehehe --- I have another handle....JohnnyBonze

Anyway - I saw where Dunn and all others are out recruiting and that Rhodes - who's paid through 2009 -- is calling from his office.

    al.com/auburn

    ReplyDelete
  165. Rhoads leaving is huge. Losing Nall is also. There are others that won't matter, but those are two of our better coaches.

I can't believe we would settle for Muschamp and probably not Fischer. There is not excuse for Auburn to not at least pursue a top notch coach.

    ReplyDelete
  166. You caught me, Mond!

    ReplyDelete
  167. sorry --- it was here.

    http://wareagleextra.blogspot.com/2008/12/dunn-several-coaches-will-continue-to.html

    how do I link that?

    ReplyDelete
  168. According to AuburnSports.com, linebackers coach James Willis, running backs coach Eddie Gran, wide receivers coach Greg Knox, defensive ends coach Terry Price and tight ends coach Steve Ensminger will continue to make recruiting trips as well. None of them were in their offices at the Auburn athletic complex Friday afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Steve - check out that link.

Its said Rhodes was still there.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Anonymous6:39 PM

Has anyone heard about the Alabama DC as a possibility?

    ReplyDelete
  171. I saw we hire Charlie Strong as HC. He has great recruiting skills and has deep connects to the most talent-rich state in our area, FL. We promote Willis to DC and get Malzahn as the OC and let him bring his own asst coaches. It's a young crew and they're sure to make some mistakes but their energy would be great for the program.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Also said Don Dunn has advised S. Marks to come back.

    ReplyDelete
  173. God bless Don Dunn

    ReplyDelete
  174. I wonder how many players are waiting to see who the new coaches are before deciding on entering the draft.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I don't see how Dunn could advise Marks to comeback with all the uncertainty. With this, I assumed Marks and Coleman would be gone and possibly Powers.

    ReplyDelete
  176. michael: You think they should rake leaves, Roman?

    Why the 'tude, dude?

Rake leaves? No. All of these men have degrees. They are still being paid. No one pays me to do nothing (though I wouldn't complain if someone would.) I just don't see why they can't do something for the dough. But ya know, if nothing else, sure...let 'em rake leaves. I'd gladly rake every leaf on campus, spread 'em out and rake 'em all over again for a six figure salary.

SFC: Rhoads leaving is huge. Losing Nall is also. There are others that won't matter, but those are two of our better coaches.

I agree that Rhoads leaving is huge. Nall? Overrated. Why some think he was such a great coach is a mystery to me.

    ReplyDelete
  177. To enter the draft when its niot the right move don't have much to do with the HC or staff.

Now coming to AU - I can see that but its PURE dollars and cents.

If you're not a first rounder - and you could be in 2009, you cost yourself money.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Nall is generally acknowledged as a great offensive line coach, although I do suppose that coaching the spread may not be one of his favorite things.

Gran is the only other coach that I would consider a huge loss, although Dunn and Price are good also.

    ReplyDelete
  179. I yam what I yam, Roman. And that is humorous/sarcastic/dry but most definitely not tude filled.

Anyway, if Auburn wants to fire them, they can fire them. And then they would still pay them because that is what the contract that everybody signed said they would do. So, the ones who want to look good are recruiting hard in hopes that they remain at Auburn, while the ones who know they aren't staying are chilling. I don't see any injustice.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Chris, a lot will be determined by where the players are forecast in the draft. I don't think being a first rounder is the criteria, although Marks would seem the most likely to have a chance at that. Coleman will likely be within the first 3 rounds. Powers is likely lower down and leaving would be a huge risk, a la the predator.

    ReplyDelete
  181. I really don't see a benefit in asking coaches to work that don't have their hearts in it. It could do more harm than good.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Turner Gill's team about to play on ESPN. He appears to be a good guy. I know his team runs the ball well.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Jet - Don't forget to come back for the 10:00 Campfire.

    ReplyDelete
  184. TONY FRANKLIN SPOTTED!

My girlfriend and I saw Tony Franklin with another guy at the Jim N' Nicks in Hoover, AL tonight.

He looked like he had lost a lot of weight. He was parked behind me and had an A-Zone AU hang tag, then pulled around and went to leave and I saw it was a silver Hyundai with a "43" plate from Lee County.

The guy who was with him had on like a red coaches sport shirt thing. We followed him until he got on I-459 North like he was headed back toward Auburn, but I have no idea.

    Just thought I would share.

    ReplyDelete
  185. They were at the Highschool playoff football game today I bet.

    ReplyDelete
  186. was that Jay Jacobs I saw in the stands at Ford Field?

Student holding sign "Got Gill"... I hope we do soon

    ReplyDelete
  187. Monica,

Did you hear what your hero Herbstreit had to say on Finebaum last night?

    ReplyDelete
  188. I would love to have Jimbo Fisher come. FSU has 5 or so, 4-star and better, offensive recruits who are committed to Fisher. They also have an interest and an offer from Auburn. These guys look like studs and would have an immediate impact on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Why would you want Fisher? Doesn't that mean we should NOT want fisher?

Herbie isn't my hero I just...umm..."admire" him. No, I didn't hear. I'm sure you're anxious to tell me!

    ReplyDelete
  190. Take a look at the dreadlock tackle from the Louisville game last night. Ouch
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp0Dswk6EAk

    ReplyDelete
  191. I'd pass a brick if we pay 2.5 MILLION to FSU just so we could hire Fisher.

    ReplyDelete
  192. The dead dreadlock laying on the field was the funniest. About time someone grabbed a handful of that hair. It's crazy. Who is that pro player with wicked long hair flying behind him every Sunday?

    ReplyDelete
  193. Thanks for that visual, TarHeel.
