Terry Bowden is back

The Florence Times-Daily's Jeff McIntyre, one of the good guys, is reporting that Terry Bowden will be the next coach at North Alabama.

Jeff's source? It's a secret.
Terry Bowden, the Division I coach of the year in 1993 while at Auburn, has been hired as head football coach at the University of North Alabama, the TimesDaily has learned.

Bowden, 52, will be officially introduced to the media Thursday morning during a news conference at 11 a.m., sources say.

He will replace Mark Hudspeth, who left UNA on Dec. 13 to become passing game coordinator at Mississippi State.

Bowden posted a 46-16-1 record in six seasons at Auburn. The Tigers were a perfect 11-0 in 1993, his first season at Auburn. At the end of the season, he was chosen the Division I national coach of the year by several organizations.
Thanks to Kathy for altering us to this.

  3. Why is it so bad? Would I want him back at Auburn? No, but hopefully he learned from his mistakes while at Auburn and the fall out following. I wish him the best of luck.

    ReplyDelete
  4. He's a good game day coach, and maybe he's learned he needs to get out and recruit.

My wife thinks he ran out of money.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Waker - Why wouldn't you want him back?

  7. I wouldn't care for Bowden at Auburn. I heard stories about his behavior and he left the team in pitiful shape. I don't respect a coach that quits in the middle of the season. Terry can find work elsewhere. I do appreciate a few great seasons he gave us, but I think we can do better in terms of a head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I wonder how LSU would have done if they had played this kid at QB all year.

I'm glad we didn't hire Johnson.

  14. Just messing with you man, I have enjoyed your work this year, especially since things have become so interesting over the past few mos. Have a good trip and I wish you and the rest of out motley crew the best in 2009.

  15. CNN had a live streaming from New Orleans. I've been looking for you Jay. I've got a brother and 2 nephews down there. I'm sure they have had several beers by now!

  16. Bowden at UNA is probably a good fit, though I wonder if he'll be able to reproduce winning ways of his Samford/ early AU coaching days. Being out of coaching for 10 years is a long time. At least we don't have to see him on ABC/ESPN anymore. Sorry it had to be your school Mr. S.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anyone see the ESPN report about Ed Orgeron going to Tennessee?

    ReplyDelete
  18. If LSU had played Jefferson at the start of the season, he would likely have had a terrible season. QBs don't tend to react good to be suddenly thrown into the show and using them too quickly can destroy their confidence.

    ReplyDelete
  19. kathy -- the CNN camera is down in the chaos. I'm on the west end.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks Jay. I noticed that they lost the feed. I'm watching these jokers jump their trucks in Las Vegas on ESPN. Crazy stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Cincy, The report said Orgeron will be named asst. head coach and D Line coach. Some other guy from teh Rams is coming as Off. Coordinator. Is Kiffin's dad still coming too? That's going to be a pretty strong staff.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yea, we were talking about TN earlier today. Orgeron is going to be making $650,000, and it was stated that Daddy Kiffin will be making $1.3M. I didn't see what the OC's salary will be. Plus the millions they are paying Lane and Phil. Some high price salaries in TN.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Steve, I got the same feeling about Jefferson. It looked like GT's defense was just overmatched at the line of scrimmage. If LSU had started Lee instead, I think the results would have been the same.

    ReplyDelete
  24. AUWade, Yes, Orgeron cited working with Monte Kiffin as one of the deciding factors for going to TN. He will also be recruiting coordinator.

  36. Kathy- the time I have seen is 1PM Eastern. I would like to know what was discussed when Garner met with Jacobs regarding the HC job. Was another position discussed then, or would they need to meet again after UGA's bowl game? Richt keeps saying AU has not asked for permission to talk with Garner again, so I wonder if all options were discussed at the prior meeting. Happy New Years to you and all of the HOTTIES.

  47. Why in the world Terry Bowden decided to get back into football in the state of Alabama is something that puzzles me. I have no doubt he wants to work his way back into the major coaching ranks, but why in Alabama?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Mobile! War Eagle!
I'm just sitting here watching Leave it to Beaver and Monk while waiting for football today.

    ReplyDelete

  50. Morning Mobilz. My nephew thought I was joking when I told him Bowden was going to UNA. He couldn't believe it. He sure left Auburn in terrible shape, and he was all about Terry. Remember the money he made on those pins every year?

    ReplyDelete
  51. At their level, UNA is a pretty good coaching position. They have been pretty successful. There are plenty of other programs that would have likely given Terry a shot.

    ReplyDelete

  56. Good Morning Everyone and Happy New Year! The A-Day game is just 3 months away.

After spending this week here in Walt Disney world. I have come to the conclusion that this place is not where dreams are made. I see families fighting and children screaming. This is more a test of a families strength rather than a dream place. All parks were filled to capacity and u could not move in the place. We went to MGM yesterday because at 9:00 am the magic kingdom was full to capacity. That should have been a sign then. Every ride was 60 minutes or more. We have had a good time but it will test your soul. Anyway happy new year.

    ReplyDelete
  57. TB, I feel your pain.
Best thing to hope for is rain... crowds head for the hotel and the park empties.
Also, if you are staying on site, go in for the early opening and stay for the late openings. It is A LOT less crowded then.
Personally, WDW is my idea of torture, but dad takes one for the team.
    Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!

  58. Segrest picked Boston College to beat Vandy and Georgia Tech to beat LSU. Things don't appear to be working out as he predicted. Underestimating the power of the SEC is always a mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  59. By the way, Crazy Les should be kicked in the grapes for what he did last night.
I think it is despicable to fake a punt when you are up by 35 points.
Corndogs should be ashamed of their idiot coach!

    ReplyDelete
  60. my grand children have had a blast that's all that matters. My kids have held up well also. Only one fight so far. I just try'n to get thru it. We are off property which has been nice.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Les is a marked man. Satan's guys are gone now, so couple more 7 - 5 seasons and he's toast.

I have been on the Garner watch this week but he's not been at Disney World. I was gonna explain to him how coming home to moma was a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  62. TB-
When our kids were little we took them to WDW and told them they better enjoy it because we'd never be back. Mrs THT and I don't like Orlando or much of anything Florida. An old high school friend goes to WDW several times EVERY year. He's >50!!! Different strokes I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Aubie, I noticed Johnson barely shook hands with Les after the game. He didn't say a word to him. I can't blame him. I hated that fake punt in the 4th quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I told the kids that next year I will be at Jackson Hole in a hot tub drinkin Crown on New Years Eve.

My next trip here I gonna be one of these folks in one of these electric chairs.

    ReplyDelete
  65. And LSU and Georgia Tech were both called for a chop block but the announcers didn't go on and on about what a dirty play it was.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Aren't we glad Johnson is not our coach. That would be our offense.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Georgia Tech's lines were dominated on both sides of the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The LSU tigerdroppings site is lit up with corndogs defending Crazy Les and whining like babies about the chop blocks. They are even bringing up Chaz Ramsey...STILL!!
I have to say, those are the worst fans in the SEC. They are the biggest crybabies I have ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I would have loved to have had Johnson as our coach.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Happy New Year everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Jay G ... texting in tongues ... another sign of the Apocalypse.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The fake punt was to get their QB more reps, yeah, right! That kind of stuff comes around to bite you!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Don't use a bowl game as a barometer of a coach ... for crying out loud. Even as tough as I was on Tuberville ... I never held the Wisconsin game against him.

And the Tech players couldn't have been excited about a big trip on the MARTA to the Georgia Dome.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I was referring to the offensive philosophy rather the talent on the field. I would have hated to go back to the bone.

    ReplyDelete
  75. One bad game doesn't erase all that Johnson accomplished. He still would have been a pretty good choice.

You can take your choice on which blowout Chizik experienced to show why he might have been a bad choice. And his blowouts didn't come against teams with a BCS talent level. Let's not forget how awesome the LSU players are and how they underperformed all year. Thanks, Les.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I love the Johnson offense. It is truly innovative and a lot more than just the triple option. In a lot of ways, it is like the spread. The guy came in and won at GT immediately with the existing players. Above all, he beat teams with more talent with that offense. The guy is one of the gems of the coaching profession these days.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I read that something happened between Johnson and Miles earlier in the week, but don't know what. It seemed apparent there was no loved lost between the two.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Steve, we find ourselves on opposite sides frequently around here, but I'm with you on this ... a tweak here and there, and that offense is the spread. It's just the option with spread principles. And I think he's one hard-nosed dude.

    I like him ... but I'm a Chiz guy.

    ReplyDelete
  79. LSU had the point to prove in the game ... embarrassing end to the season ... Tech had won its be all-end all game over UGA ... add in the lame bowl trip for Tech, and it really shouldn't have surprised us.

Kids, Jet says watch South Carolina-Iowa. It might be important.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sure looks nice and warm in Tampa.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Well Iowa made that look easy.

    ReplyDelete
  84. you can count me as a tolerator. See my previous post. I am looking forward to going back to work so I can rest.

    ReplyDelete
  85. 3 3rd down conversions ... oh my

    ReplyDelete
  86. jet-why is the South Carolina-Iowa game important?

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'm definitely not looking forward to going back to work, but it is a place to rest. I haven't been to Disney in over 6 years. We use to go every other year until the kids graduated. Now that we have 2 grandbabies, the Grandpa is ready to take them. I think we are going to wait another year or 2. They are just 8 mths and 21 mths old right now. Have fun TB with the family. We are all very blessed.

    Happy New Year Hotties....

I'm into the Z. Love that we're keeping Willis and hiring Malzahn. So far, Coach Z is making good moves. We need ampified AU fan support to help turn around the intiial poor response and help recruiting. Recruits do indeed notice that kind of stuff.

2 SEC Udogs win last night. Congrats to Vandy. I should never pick against the SEC in bowl games against the ACC.

I've picked Iowa over USC....Spurrier can't seem to keep those guys to focused.....I swear I wrote this prior to that INT.

    ReplyDelete
  89. This game might be over before the 1st quarter. Georgia game starts in 90 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Heard something 3 days ago ... that's now leaking out on the boards ... Elliz Johnson?

    ReplyDelete
  91. I am back among the living!

Held up well considering the situation. I swore off Krystal in 1999 ... and held strong until last night. Sometimes you've gotta work with what's available.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Happy New Year JGT!

Krystal is so gross. I'd starve to death first.

    ReplyDelete
  93. New Year's Eve Krystal ... you were partying like it was 1999!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Just read on another board that CGM has offered another QB out of Springdale HS a scholly? Kids name Ashton Glaser he's a is 3 star quarterback. Anyone else seen this?

    ReplyDelete
  95. He's already enrolled at Missouri ... which makes him untouchable, does it not?

    ReplyDelete
  96. THT: The other option was to remain drunk -- the bad kind of drunk -- until like 3 p.m. today.

    Last available option!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Isn't Ellis Johnson about 57 or 58? He might be too old for this young staff!

    ReplyDelete
  98. South Carolina is likely overmatched against Iowa, but I do think Spurrier is close to having South Carolina compete for the east.

    ReplyDelete
  99. The strong run a few years back by Air Force, Johnson's run at Navy, and Georgia Tech this year are good examples of teams with lesser talent competing well with the option. LSU had a long time to prepare, so the uniqueness of it was neutralized. I think that's why Johnson tried to put in some passing.

I don't think it's a good fit for teams like Auburn, and the true test for Georgia Tech will be next year, when teams get their second look.

    ReplyDelete

Kathy, I'm not a fan of WDW, but have been outvoted by the family and therefore have gone 4 times.

The last time we went was with our daughter for her HS grad trip. I'm really blessed and can't complain complain about that...I was braced to tell her that we weren't going to let her go to Cancun with her friends and she surprises us with the WDW request.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Krystal's on campus preping for finals. Those were the days. Plus they are good for absorbing the fire juice!!

    Thanks Kathy u to.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Jay G- Krystals is like the last girl avaliable before the bar closes. Not your first choice, but better than nothing. Hope you had a great New Years in the Big Easy.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Spurrier calm and nurturing? That is interesting. Usually Spurrier is as bought as subtle as a sledge hammer.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Well, this game will be no use for us to evaluate anything, except for the fact that Stephen Garcia belongs at a nice Division II school -- maybe he can call Terry Bowden.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Use the Waffle House Jay, use the Waffle House!!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Total meltdown for USC now. Maybe Garcia had too much family time in Tampa. Isn't that his hometown?

I (sortof) remember the "original" Popeye's chicken on Canal Street near the Mariott. My wife was petrified and according to her, I was friends with the street people.

    Fumbullll....this game is getting uuuuuuugly.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Garcia is young, but the QB Spurrier wants to go with for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I never thought about Krystal like that JGT, but I guess I can add that to the list of reasons I don't drink (#1 being I just prefer Coca-Cola)

I went to Krystal once in 1975. A "plain" cheeseburger had those smelly nasty onions (they come frozen on the patties). Haven't been back since.

    ReplyDelete
  110. jet- Elliz Johnson to AU? Does that mean no R Garner? Or will RG return in another capacity? Or did I misunderstand what you said?

    ReplyDelete
  111. and no I'm NOT picky. Ok, I am. But I prefer the term "selective."

    ReplyDelete
  112. Anonymous10:32 AM

I've been saying for 2 years now that Spurrier is coasting. If not for ElliZ Johnson, this team would have really been awful this year.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Wow, I actually agree with the announcer. When things are sucking so bad so quickly, taking a timeout and having a talk with the defense is a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  114. It could be Elliz ... Rodney, I'm still unsure ... just what I heard a few days ago ... now, same thing has made it's way on to the boards.

he qualifies as a wise old hand on what looks like will be a staff of younger guys.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Anonymous10:35 AM

Sure would be nice to get a RG or EJ announcement for DC tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I am wondering if we will see Trotter at QB this coming season. He wasn't rated nearly as high as Kodi or Neil, but he should get the edge on hair style.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I want Rodney Garner. I have a serious man crush on him.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I want Rodney ... in any capacity. I just figure he wants to be a coordinator to check that box on his resume, but if he's willing to come as AHC/Recruiting Coord. and we get a solid DC, too, well that's like winning both showcases on The Price Is Right.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Rodney Garner is a must-have for AU to compete with the evil empire. A lateral move does him no good, UGA has already passed him over for DC. Make it happen AU.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Actually Rodney Garner is one of the many reasons I would never want to see Terry Bowden back at Auburn. Letting Garner get away was one of truly stupid moves that Bowden did. From what I understand, Garner wanted to stay at Auburn but couldn't deal with Terry.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Zteve, the story was that Garner was about to inflict personal injury to Tater Tot but someone arrived to break it up. Bowden wanted to take RG off the field and he went to UT. I agree with you about Bowden, that move was the beginning of his downward spiral at AU.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Georgia should get the SEC back on track later today. I don't think South Carolina losing to Iowa is a big shock.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Garner Garner Garner
