UGA coach says Searels is staying

Here is Tim Tucker's (short) story on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's web site, which quotes UGA coach Mark Richt saying Stacy Searels will stay at UGA.

Searels, an Auburn graduate, has spoken with Gene Chizik about being a part of the Tigers' staff.
“From what he’s told me, he plans on staying at Georgia,” Richt said. “So we’re excited about it. For us to keep him is big for Georgia.”
I'm not off the case here just yet.

  2. any one heard that marks and coleman are both leaning to nfl even after talking to cgc?

  3. 3. Shocked. Not happy.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yep Rosco. I heard they are both leaning to the NFL.

Wish we could have gotten Searels.

    ReplyDelete
  5. If Marks is being projected 1st round he should do more than lean, he should fall head over heels into the NFL. Coleman might need to regain his balance.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Cat ... I'm w/ you on that.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Nothing about Garner...

Maybe the staff hires will end up being as surprising and unprepared as the Chizik hiring...

  8. I read that Coleman would announce on Jan 3rd and a lot would be determined by who the OC was - that he very much WANTED to come back to Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Why would the OC matter to AC?

    ReplyDelete
  10. sorry - typo - DC

  11. One more thing,
isn't there something that changes next year with the NFL draft? Like isn't there a rookie salary cap being implemented?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah I figured that Mon. Just wanted to be sure Im sure the defensive philosophy will matter to a guy like AC if we run a 3-4 or a 4-3

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is the rookie salary cap this year or next?

    ReplyDelete
  14. the current NFL deal will expire after next season, meaning if you can leave now, it's time to go for folks like Marks.

For Coleman, I think it's a bad risk because he won't go high enough to justify the leap.

  15. Kathy,
it takes effect next year..... so the last time to get big pay days is this draft!

    ReplyDelete
  16. That's what I thought. Thanks Mobile.

  17. Fadin', Mobile, fadin'

  18. It sounds like Richt isn't convinced that he's not leaving either. My guess is we'll know after their game next week, unless Searels comes out and says soemthing more definite.

    ReplyDelete
  19. that was not exactly a rock solid statement. smells a little iffy to me. big cat - you don't like searles?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah im not 100% sold on this story. Im not even 100% sold he was offered the job all he would say is he was interviewed and he's staying at GA. I think if he was offered and GA countered Chizik may counter and try again after the bowl game. I'm sure Chizik has some sort of backup plan. Very happy to hear about Willis though, this should help big time with recruits.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is interesting. I assume that Willis wasn't named sooner because there were other candidates.

I am thinking that Searles was the guy Chizik wanted, but we shall see. It could be a bidding war happens, but it sounds like UGA is paying Searles well for being the OL coach.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Searles makes 220k

    ReplyDelete
  23. Searles is apparently getting a raise out of this deal. I can see why he would want to stay put.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 28!
JayGT- thanks for the great news on Willis

    ReplyDelete
  25. I read a great blurb on Demarco McNeal wanting to stay and coach the DLine. DM was a great kid and a great player...maybe we can get a great DL coach before he moves on to another school

    ReplyDelete
  26. DM TR MP=lots of dline candidates

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not sure why he held out just keeping Willis? An announcement sooner might have assisted in recruiting.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Recruitment isn't over until they sign on the dotted line. Lots of time left for those that were seriously committed to Auburn. If they don't love Auburn, then they should move on.

    ReplyDelete
  29. hey. smokescreen. big hires to follow. oh, wait, it doesn't work that way around here...ummm, happy new year.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Happy Holiday Hotties. Just got back from my family trip to Georgia.Hope you all had a MErry Christmas...now to business.
-I am curious as to why CGC didn't rehired Willis sooner? Haven't read any possible explanations for that.
Mon- What do you think about the Yox rehire? Remind me..How many injuries did we have this year?
I probably got mre but it's early and I am still tired.
Jay-Thanks for the update. I was running behind and as usual with one click of the button, I'm back in the game. Nice work.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Happy Holidays wartiger. Yox has won several awards for his position. Sometimes injuries happen. OL lost weight, so I can see why they would suffer injuries. Tough going up against the SEC DLines we faced 30 pounds lighter. Yox was around when Chizik was DC at Auburn, so he knows Yox and his credentials.

I don't think we will hear about OC/DC hires until after bowl games.

  32. Since my family's alliances are split, my dad and stepmom have lived in Tuscaloosa for 30+ years, I had to spend a few hours with the "evil" side of the family. My dad was talking about some WR that is suppose to be the best in the country and how Julio has talked him into coming to Alabama. I guess Julio drove him around in his Escalade. That's probably all the talking he had to do! Nephew got a new football signed by Satan. They were all discussing their New Orleans trip. In their defense, they didn't say anything about Auburn. They just talked about their team.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'll be honest Kathy..I don't know alot about Yox's credentials. It's just that it was alot of injuries and while there are plenty of reasons for that a good bit of the blame goes on the strength coach does is not?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I am not friends with Yox.

    I have no agenda.

He does a good job. He is very serious about his job. He is a no-nonsense guy, keeps his nose clean, very loyal, loves his profession.

He's exactly what I'd want in that kind of a coach.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yox is a very good strength coach in my opinion. He will have these guys bulked up once again and ready to play. I have no doubts about that.

Searles staying at UGA is surprising to me as well.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Does not surprise me...Looked to be a lateral move and nobody likes change. If you are happy where you are and you can make mo money then it does not surprise me. I know it may come as a surprise but these guys are doing this for living and have to think differently unlike alumni or fans.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The Willis thing perplexes me a little though...the only thing I can think is that he did not want him out there until he was sure they were on the same page.

  38. Is anyone else hearing that Coach Herring will be announced as DC after the Cowboys finish this Sunday???

    ReplyDelete
  39. I've seen almost no talk on Garner coming to AU. Is that considered a done deal to remain at UGA? My hope of Malzahn, Searels and Garner is looking sadly at 0-3.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I saw a post somewhere (different board) that since he did not have a staff, these visits would not count against his HC's limit of 1. He can still make another visit after the dead period.

I don't know if this is true, but if it is, it could explain why Willis was "dismissed" for a couple of weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Very interesting NoVa. If true, that would explain the Willis situation.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Pred just saw your post. I dont have anything against Searels. I'm just not sure how great of an OL coach you need to be at LSU and UGA. The talent there is usually pretty solid to begin with.

    ReplyDelete
  43. BigCat, can't argue the talent issue. What impressed me about Searels this past year was UGA had numerous injuries on the o-line and he shuffled the players around to still have a strong line. No excuses about injuries, he expected the players to perform wherever they played.

  44. Happy Birthday, Jet!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why wouldn't CSS make his own statement?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Monica ...

    I don't know what you're talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Phred, I hope this is not final but Searels does not speak to the media. I am not sure he would release a statement. I still hold out hope that AU will make Searels and Garner an offer they can't refuse.

  48. I just took a look at Bama's recruiting board. And now I am cleaning the coffee from my computer screen after it spontaneously spewed out of my mouth. Jeeesh.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Phred, this is why I do not let Garner give me no for an answer. He is the one coach I know of that could compete with Saban. How much is a top-notch GM worth in the NFL? No matter how good the coach is talent will always limit how much you can be coached up. Garner can bring in that type of talent. He has proven it at AU, Tennessee and Georgia.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I was talking to the other Jet.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Depressed I thought I heard that there were some ethical issues with Garner's recruiting methods in the past. That true?

Bama's recruiting class is enough to make any non-bama depressed.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm kiddin' w/ ya. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I know. You're welcome. :-)

    Happy Birthday also to McLovin!

    ReplyDelete
  54. BigCat, that talk has followed Garner for years, but he has never been named in any infractions against the school where he was coaching. I can promise you that is the one name Bama doesn't want to see coming to Auburn. If AU is serious about competing with Saban in recruiting this is the guy to do it. And seriously, how much is a guy like that worth? Whatever it takes in my eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think it is likely that Willis wasn't named because there were other candidates. Coaches keep lists of who they would hire if they could and it is likely Willis had to compete against that list.

    ReplyDelete
  56. GO UNC! BEAT WVU

I don't like that Bowden dude on ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Depressed that is good to know that he was not named in any infractions. I just keep hearing that brought up along with how great of a recruiter he is. Are we looking at him for DC? If not would he make a lateral move? Maybe that's why talks have slowed down about him.

    ReplyDelete
  58. BigCat, I have no inside news, so I do not know if he is being looked at as a DC or not. I do know a CASUAL(not close) friend of his who doubts he would return in a lateral move. Here is my thought- Chizik will probably run the defense as he sees fit. Why not bring Garner in as DC and let him learn under Chizik? He would gain experience under a top-notch defensive coach and also pump up his resume. His ultimate goal is to be a HC, and he really needs a co-ordinator role to make that move. Just my .02 worth, which means nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Phred....why did Bama's recruiting cause you to spew coffee?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I want WV to lose but man that was a nice TD pass by White.

    ReplyDelete
  61. 5 TD's in the first quarter??? Sheesh

    ReplyDelete
  62. FSJ ... Phred is to smart to take the bait.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thank you very much, Phred!

    ReplyDelete
  64. This Rodney has my respect. We need him ...

    ReplyDelete
  65. What the heck? 35 points in the first quarter and 9 since then???

    ReplyDelete
  66. OK, I'm looking at Tommy Bowden, Lee Corso, and Todd Blackledge, and some random chick on ESPN.

Who else thinks it looks like Holly Hunter and the gang from "O Brother! Where Are Thou?"

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm not sure CGC wants to keep all the recruits we've got committed. The offensive recruits were targeted for the spread, and we're going smash mouth. I haven't been impressed with the new suitors for our de-commits.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Richard the problem is that none of the spread type players are de-comitting. The ones that have decomitted have some impressive suitors, Atchinson left for the bad guys, Robinson either UGA or the bad guys, Cotton Ole Miss or Ark, Kenney either us or UGA, not to mention UF has offered 2-3 of our wait and see commits. This was not a bad class, just some small WRs.

    ReplyDelete
  69. For anyone with doubts about Garner, take a look at this list- while at AU he took Takeo Spikes from Ga and Martavious Houston from Fla. After being booted to Tennessee, in the biggest mistake of Tot's AU tenure, he landed Cosey Coleman, Jamal Lewis and Deon Grant from the state of Ga, and Fred Weary among others from Alabama. UGA, tired of having him cleaning their plate, hired him away and pretty much sealed their borders from other teams. A top-level recruiter is a MUST in this conference, and Garner is the real deal.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Not so fast on Atchinson, the bad guys haven't decided whether they have room or not. He may wind up like Conner, looking for a home. Kenny's awaiting Stafford's NFL decision to decide - he's the one I hate losing. As you noted, Cotton isn't getting the attention his stars would indicate (OM and Ark).

  71. Thanks Monica! I plan on spending the night with some friends and Jager.

  72. McLovin ... I will celebrate with a quiet dinner at the house ... of course, I am old.

  73. My gals are out for a few days.

I can do a campfire at some point today/tomorrow if there is interest ...

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'll never turn down a campfire....

  75. McLovin - It's the big 30 even! Have fun and (sorry, I have to say it) be careful!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I am campfirable.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Tommy Bowden is smarmy.

    ReplyDelete
  78. And you are snarky.

    ReplyDelete
  79. We'll shoot for 8 cdt.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Outstanding...

    RTR

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'll try to make it ... my b'day cake candles should provide enough fire for the campfire.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I hope we can get Atchinson back. Maybe it's just a personal preference but I think LBs should be 6'2"+ across the board with a few minor exceptions like the little ball of hate and Da Bull.

    ReplyDelete
  83. The field on which they are playing "Emerald Bowl" is pitiful!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I would like to announce my intention to never buy Emerald brand nuts, Pop Secret popcorn or any other advertiser attached to the Emerald Bowl

    Carry on.
