Auburn adds a third assistant coach

Oklahoma State assistant coach Curtis Luper has accepted an offer to join the Auburn staff.

Luper has spent the past four seasons coaching tailbacks. He will fill the same role at Auburn.

Luper and head coach Gene Chizik won't need an introduction. They worked together during the mid-1990s at Stephen F. Austin, where Chizik served as a position assistant while Luper broke into coaching as a graduate assistant.

``The opportunity to reconnect with my mentor in Coach Chizik and have the chance coach at a program known as `Running Back U.', was something that I could not pass up," Luper said. ``My coaching philosophy and foundation was established with Coach Chizik 13 years ago at Stephen F. Austin, where we took our initial jobs and arm-in-arm helped the program to the national semifinals."

Auburn now has three assistant coaches on staff: Luper, offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and linebackers coach James Willis.

``Curtis Luper is a tremendous coach, who I’ve had the pleasure of watching blossom from a player to the successful individual that he is today,” Chizik said. “I had a great amount of respect for him as a player and while mentoring him in the beginning of his coaching career. Curtis has done an outstanding job coaching running backs and I am excited to coach with him again."

  2. Those TT boys are getting hostile.

    ReplyDelete
  3. It's getting to be that time.

    ReplyDelete
  4. They are hostile because Ole Miss took their manhood.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Got to admit, Ole Miss was impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  6. That's a big win for Ole Miss!

    ReplyDelete
  7. IMO, they probably should be one of the top two in the west next year......

But I have a feeling the media will vote LSU and Alabama in those spots at media days.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ole Miss,
Took those Boys behind the Woodshed and administered a Kingsize Can of Whoopa$$!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Faker ... nobody was listening, but I named you the official HOTTIE of the week.

Your level-headed approach to the Sugar Bowl certainly dovetails with the HABOTN spirit.

    ReplyDelete
  10. JayG.
We were listening and give Faker all his props....
    You under estimate the HOTTIES!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Any chance we can get Tracy Rocker?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I figured: Jan. 2 ... Alabama playing tonight ... we didn't have a single caller ... nobody cared about us.

ps: Shall we campfire the Sugar Bowl?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks Jay.

I was listening and apparently you announced it when my better half was chatting with me..

    ReplyDelete
  14. Tracy Rocker? Depends on the position.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We are all seeing and all knowing...

ok i'm gonna go cook for tonight...

Blackened Red Fish and Crab Meat Au Gratin....

    I know I'm da Man!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jay, I didn't think Bama fans were elligible for Hottie of the Week. There needs to be some special category or something.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I didn't think Ole Miss would win this game, but this win works into Nutt's M.O.

The expectations will rise next season and then he'll start migrating toward 6-6.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jay,
you took the words right out of my mind!

They will come back to earth next year, so will Bammer

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's Nuckin Futts!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I bet all the media types stop saying about Florida....but Ole Miss beat them at home. Ole Miss looked great and the final score could/should have been a lot worse.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You are correct about Nutt's teams though, they always find the way to mediocrisicity! Ha

    ReplyDelete
  22. From what I can tell, OSU fans hate to lose Luper... which usually means he was a good coach. One even commented that Luper was "Literally Gundy's right hand man".

Let's hope he's a great recruiter. He should be another guy to help open up Texas and midwest recruiting ties. He has a fairly impressive resume from what I can tell.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good info Miller. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  24. He's a recruiter, absolutely.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah I cant find a OSU message board that has anything bad to say about Lupin.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Any chance we hear of any other staff hires tonight?
This hire only makes me want more.
Chizik is putting together a good staff so far. Keep it up Chiz!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Kristina....

Have you been to Tiderinsider yet?

    Just kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Total off subject but John Travolta's 16-year old son died from an apparent seizure. How sad.

    ReplyDelete
  29. OT, but one of those message boards said that ESPN said the Broncos asked to speak with Bob Stoops.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jay G, any word on the DC hire?

    ReplyDelete
  31. When are NFL teams gonna learn about hiring college coaches?

    ReplyDelete
  32. No, faker, I don't go to "those" kinds of sites.

    ReplyDelete
  33. One blogger on OSU board called OSU Tailback U!

    ReplyDelete
  34. If there is news on the DC, I will post it on the HABOTN immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  35. UK getting ripped.

    Blah.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Not many fans at the Liberty Bowl. A lot of empty seats.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Maybe those are UK fans wearing dark blue?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kentucky has played like crap coming down the stretch this year...

I know they had injuries but.....

    ReplyDelete
  39. Your typing is much improved of late Mr. Tate. NOLA always had that affect on me, too. I almost got stuck in Algiers on new year's eve, once. I didn't know the ferries stopped running and I couldn't tell time that well anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sportscall was discussing Ellis Johnson and I heard a buyout mentioned. I couldn't hear the details, does anyone else know anything about this?

    ReplyDelete
  41. From one of the OSU boards regarding Luper: Awesome coach.
    Awesome guy.
    Very good recruiter.

I hate to see us lose Coach Luper. You all got a great one in Curtis.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Johnson's contract includes a buyout that would require him to pay the university $1.05 million if he leaves for another assistant coaching position, but the buyout is waived if Johnson becomes a head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nutt = Tuberville Lite

    ReplyDelete
  44. If We hire Eliiz Johnson.... wouldn't that be his 4th job in 2 years?
Mississppi State 04-07 -> Hired at Arkansas when Petrino was hired -> Hired at South Carolina a month later (wife is from SoCar and she wanted to go back home)...

So IF he left for AU, that would be his 4th job in 2 years!

    ReplyDelete
  45. depressed, i don't know about the buyout but wikipedia already has him as dc at auburn "2009 to present". Not that that makes it anywhere near being true, but it is interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  46. OMG, Fulmer on the halftime show on ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Fulmer was on yesterday too. Didn't do to bad, but he talks like a fat guy.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks for the replies. I find it hard to believe AU would pay a million dollar buyout for a DC. Especially when you look at that track record that D Miller posted. Fourth job in two years?? I know Jacobs said money would not be an issue, but this is not what I think most people had in mind.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Spongeworthy in the house!

    ReplyDelete
  50. depressed. Maybe JJ could set up a job fair to interview potential candidates for the DC job. He would wisper in their ears "now, be sure to keep this on the low side cuz. Don't need to advertise that you are interested in this job".

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mrs. Jay Barker performing halftime at the Liberty Bowl

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's the strangest half time show ever. Bowl's cutting back their budgets for entertainment?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wow. Kentucky runs kick back. That was quick.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Having issues in their kicking game. We feel their pain!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Big Mike. Was that Jay's kid on stage clapping his hands (off beat of course) Better than Janet Jackson and her "defective" outfit, however.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Glad to see Auburn hire another person, Chiz and Willis cannot do it all.
Ole Miss will be the hot pick to win the West next year. Part of the huge win was the play of their D-Line, which is why I still hope Rocker will come on over.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Kathy, don't you mean Jay Evans' wife is performing? Sorry, couldn't resist. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Kentucky ... on the way back?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Kentucky only down by a TD. They've got the ball now.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sponge, if Mrs Barker has a wardrobe malfunction be sure and tivo it for me.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Spongie -- you referring to the one with the Michael Jackson mask?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Moving right along are these UK Wildcats.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Did Chizik and Luper coach together at Stephen F Austin or is this a Malzahn hire?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think this guys is Malzahn-certified.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Jet,
I guess it would not be in good taste to change the new Coaches name from Luper to Luzer....

That would be a terrible thing to do, huh?

    Hey just asking!

    ReplyDelete
  66. JayG
    Aren't those Wildcats you boyz?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Depressed. No need to Tivo. Anyone can buy those. About 5K per pair aren't they? Make sure you get them for your special someone. Not something you buy for yourself1!!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm a UK grad ... though my boys play futebol in Manchester, England.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thats great...the first comment on the OK website is by a Bammer bashing Chiz and Auburn

    ReplyDelete
  70. OSU's head coach is getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  71. All square at 16 in Memphis.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Is it possible Pat Dye was not lying about his involvment in the assistant coaching hires?

    ReplyDelete
  73. kentucky's gonna do it for the sec!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Anyone read Barkley's police report for the DUI. Read that and tell me if Barkley is qualified to speak of the social ills at AU. No cred. At least we know if he's elected Alabama Gov, first thing he will do is legalize prostitution.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Are you sure it was a prostitute that was servicing him?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Barkleys' campaign motto- "no more sin taxes."

    ReplyDelete
  77. Mon. One could only assume since he was "driving around the block to find the same girl that took care of him a week ago". Although, money was never mentioned!

    ReplyDelete
  78. OK, I haven't seen the report. Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  79. How about Lupzer...the other I couldn't live with.

Gonna have to change all my jerseys to Mikez

    ReplyDelete
  80. Need to google it. Interesting read. People who live in glass houses......I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  81. It was on smoking gun.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Does anybody have any status on Chris Slaughter? Did he transfer to Ga Southern?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Sponge- I bring you all sorts of recruiting info and you tell me to "Google it"? Ingrate.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Sorry Mon. I'm link illiterate. Not that it matters, don't even know what site I went to myself. Basically, Charles was pulled over. They asked him what he was doing. He said he was driving around the block to find the same girl that took care of him last week. Indicated she was the best ever. Also offerd to tatoo the officers name on his roast if he would let him off. Repeated that all he did was drink. Didn't touch all that other sh.. There you have it. No need to google now.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Wooo hooo Damages back on next week!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I like sponge's edited version of what Barkley said the girl would do for him.

    ReplyDelete
  87. MObile ...

    His name is CurtiZ Luper.

    ReplyDelete
  88. sponge

    u r doomed

    ReplyDelete
  89. Why would slaughter leave? Grades? He should have a new lease on life w/ the new staff. Can't wait to see Tulsa play their bowl game. Wanna see that offense.

    ReplyDelete
  90. lol hush Jet! You are so dang mean!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Why Jet. I didn't indicate if Barkley was spongeworthy or not. Just reporting the news.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Can't remember exactly what it was with Slaughter. I think it was all speculation. I don't think he made the trip to Tuscaloosa, did he?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Kathy - i can't find anything like that about Slaughter. What have you heard?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Proactive for acne.

    That's all I'm saying.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Sugar Bowl pregame. There is Switzer in his Mafia uniform.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anonymous6:51 PM

Mon, read a "cleaned up" article article about Chuck in USAToday. Kathy is right..smoking gun gives more info and the link to the poll-eece report.

CurtiZ Luper was a grad student at Stephen F Austin when Chiz was there. CurtiZ has his masters and has worked towards his Phd. New Mexico and OSU all seem to think well of him.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I think a new job energized Nutt.

I read that Ellis Johnson may be interested in Auburn so he can qualify for Alabama State retirement. I think we've had enough of that.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Sponge ... you got Monica mad at you ... you are doomed.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Anonymous6:53 PM

Kathy, I seem to remember that Chris had a family issue and that was all.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I'm hurt. I thought my version was pretty clean.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I read some time back that Slaughter hadn't been at practice since the UGA game and had told people that he was transferring to Ga. Southern where his old high school coach is the offensive coordinator.

Slaughter didn't make the trip to Tuscaloosa. Tubs said he was working through some family issues, or something like that. He was suspended earlier in the year.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Elliz is da real dizzle ... no worries.

    I'm pumped about CurtiZ.

    Go UteZ!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Anonymous6:55 PM

ABC gushes over the ROse Bowl and USC....now Fox is doing the same with Bama/Bear....stop it!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Sponge - I hope you know to ignore Jet. He's trying to be a trouble maker.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I would think with the coaching change, Slaughter might be interested in staying. He might have some school work to do to become eligible.

    ReplyDelete
  106. lol @ "Go Mormons. Beat Morons."

    ReplyDelete
  107. Jet. Monica had a hand in naming me when I first got on this blog. In a sense, I'm her namesake!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Luper = 4 years Army as Air Traffic Controller.

    Me likey.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Anonymous6:58 PM

Great....showing the Bama band for pre-game......the paltry 6,000 Utah fans must feel like they are in W Vance.

    ReplyDelete
  110. You tell him, Sponge, shugah! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  111. There are WAY MORE than 4,000 Utah fans there.

    ReplyDelete
  112. There ya go Jet. you got a Shugah yet. Me, I'm soaking it up. you know how we sponges are.

    ReplyDelete
  113. oooo Fireworks in the Superdome - BAD BAD BAD. I was at the Saints 49'ers game when the fireworks caught the ceiling on fire.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hope the tide wins tonight. Just sets Sabear up for the big fall next year. Losing some key players, will have a new QB, losing key coordinators. ncaa comes a callin. You know, they'll be jumpin off bridges this time next year. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  115. I'm off for bit. Cookin some steaks, settlin in for the game. UTES UTES UTES. Go UTES. What's a Ute?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Sponge ...

From ingrate to shugah ... i'm impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  117. ummm who is that dude?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Kentucky just scored.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Reviewing the turnover.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I'd like JPW sacked 38 times.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Overturned the TD for Kentucky.

    ReplyDelete
  122. MOnica ... I'd settle for 10 ... don't want anybody getting 11 sacks against the Tahd. That's reserved for us.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Another turnover and Kentucky TD. Let's see if this was is overturned.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Did you see that stiff arm? Knocked the guys mouth piece out, now that's a slobber knocker!

    ReplyDelete
  125. TD Kentucky with 3 mins left.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Ken Stabler. Sober? Or Not?

    Discuss among yourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Already talking smack at the coin toss.

    ReplyDelete
  128. A question ...

Is Saban coloring his hair? Looks lighter and redder ... maybe some highlights going on.

Getting his hair foiled once a week maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  129. LOL Jet, I was thinking the same thing about his hair!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Was Stabler on the field? WHY?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Anonymous7:19 PM

Everytime I go to the Ky game bob davies is pointing out how bad the officials are....and always against Ky.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Either the all the former MVP were invited, or he just stumbled out there like Shooter in "Hoosiers."

    ReplyDelete
  133. The officials are missing a lot of calls, but they got it right this time.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Anonymous7:20 PM

    Stabler+NOLA=

    ReplyDelete
  138. 1 down, 37 to go

    ReplyDelete
  139. There's your first sack, Mon.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Julio is holding out for a raise.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Anonymous7:23 PM

    Mon, The first of 38

    ReplyDelete
  142. Stabler + NOLA = .30

    ReplyDelete
  143. Or looking at it another way.

    Stabler + NOLA = 3(Legal Limit)

    ReplyDelete
  144. Jay, I think they said Big East officials, or it might have been Big 10!

    ReplyDelete
  145. Anonymous7:26 PM

Uh-oh.....cable just went out. Good thing we're in Ga. This would cause serious beatings in Alabama

    ReplyDelete
  150. Ballgame. Kentucky wins!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Anonymous7:30 PM

That was the fastest I have ever seen someone score on Bama.

I guess we have already paid out on football karma and I can gloat a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  152. That looked like our first drive against UAT. Not really.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Anonymous7:31 PM

    Glad Kentucky pulled it out.

Did nobody tell Utah that they were destined to lose this game? They are playing to win.

    ReplyDelete
  154. My nephew is probably very depressed in the stadium. He didn't think Utah would score. They've never gone up against the mighty Bama defense.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Anonymous7:32 PM

    Interception Utah

    ReplyDelete
  156. Way to go JPW!!!

    ReplyDelete
  157. Everybody said one of the keys to a Ute victory was JPW mistakes. There's 1.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I'm gettin' a little giddy here.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Anonymous7:35 PM

    ReplyDelete
  165. Kill em! Destroy em! Murdalize em! Skunk rule em! OOHHHH YES!

    ReplyDelete
  166. That was the "wild ute" package. What's a Ute?

    ReplyDelete
  167. By any chance, did Utah buy Alabama dinner first?

    ReplyDelete
  168. O is getting jumpy. :-D

    ReplyDelete
  169. I'd love a massive butt kickin'

    Aight.

    ReplyDelete

Sorry the game is getting to me.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I love the sideline shots of Alabama players. I wish they would add some of those comic strip thought bubbles next to them.

    "Do you know what happened"?

"Dang, maybe I shouldn't have had that beer last night"?

"Are we really getting beat by a bunch or momons"?

"Did you see how quick they scored"?

"Bear? I tought you said beer!!! My Bad."

    ReplyDelete

    Go Utes.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Do you think they miss Andre?

    ReplyDelete
  178. Utah ... a very quick football team.

Alabama misses Andre ... and now Mike Johnson.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Why does Bama keep trying to run outside? Run between the frickin tackles. These utes is quick, but little.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Anonymous7:47 PM

    That's 2, Mon
