Oku now an option?

Good afternoon.

Our friends at AuburnSports.com are reporting that TB David Oku from suburban Oklahoma City is planning to visit Auburn next weekend. Though he remains somewhat committed to Tennessee, Oku has made trips to Louisville and Nebraska. He's visiting Syracuse this weekend. Auburn comes next.

Could the Tigers actually land Oku? Impossible to know. Auburn is getting in very late on these kids. Sometimes that actually assists the Tigers' effort -- they're the "new" program with the new staff and the revised expectations.

  6. sorry, AU1n- -thought of joke and wanted to replace!

Ahh, yeah you can't replace or edit.

  8. expound - Nice,Miller.

JJ is the only rumor I've seen. I agree with Michael. Yawn.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Wow, even on the internets yawns are contagious

    ReplyDelete
  10. Omnica
But if it is Tuberville as intermediary for Willis with Sabin-- that would be huge and ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'd be willing to bring a ladder and rip his picture off the side of the stadium for that

    ReplyDelete
  12. Is it bad form and wrong to pick up the question posed on the last thread here (about the Tubs as filthy stinking "intermediary" organizing Willis hire)??

If so, I will delete post and then off myself due to the shame and humiliation I've visited upon the Drummond family.

    Arnold

  13. Thanks WDE (taking lips off exhaust hose)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I would settle down, I haven't heard anything credible that Tubs helped Willis out.

But if he did, well, it would be one guy who got fired by Auburn helping out another guy who got fired by Auburn. So, as Auburn, how upset can we be?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Correction: second guy who RESIGNED from Auburn w/$6 MILLION of "good will" in order to be "involved ambassador"

    ReplyDelete
  16. Frankly, if Tubby was helping Willis get a job elsewhere, then good.

I'm glad they were successful. Get is his bohunkus out of Auburn and roll with the Beelzebubbas.

I don't care. Soon enough the flotsam and jetsam will be gone, and we can go about our business.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is Tubbs Willy Wonka in that "theoretical" scenario?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Not exactly Michael. It'd be one guy who got severance even though he resigned, and told the Pres he'd stick around the community to be an ambassador-- helping out a guy who was fired BUT THEN accepted an offer on the new staff.

    so, no, not exactly

    ReplyDelete
  19. Tubs is Colonel Klink in that scenario

    ReplyDelete
  20. WDEwg - yes, that would be Big Ugly.

TODAYS LEARNING MOMENT: Big Ugly Creek is a major tributary of the Guyandotte River in the Harts Creek District of Lincoln County, West Virginia

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, sorry for skipping all the high points about this and that. Certainly Tuberville wasn't forced to resign, because they would not have lied about it. But that is a discussion of long ago.

I think Willis is scuzz, but I don't care that he is gone and I don't care who helped him get gone. There are more important things in life than football rivalries, and being personal friends of both Saban and Willis, I am not sure Tuberville would be sent to hell for doing a couple of friends a favor. (and by hell, I mean Tuscaloosa)

Anyway, this is still all message board hypothetical talk. Jay, have you heard anything on this?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous3:40 PM

Are we still debating that Tuberville was or was not fired?

I'd wager a guess that his mom has a pretty good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Where has this originated from?

And I asked this yesterday, is Willis irreplaceable?

Who was it on here who posted something about him having some dirt under his fingernails when it comes to recruitng? Someone posted that when he was originally let go.

  25. People around here forget things, FSJ. Why, just a couple of weeks ago it was 10 peops against me telling me Chizik was a great hire.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Please no, Inverness. Shall we all put the Tuberville fired/resigned monkey back in the barrel?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oku-nowan-option sounds like a Pacific island

    ReplyDelete
  28. that's what she said.

    ReplyDelete
  29. All I saw was FSJ's comment about the guy's mom.

    No problem.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for the shout out Jay.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous3:49 PM

    Chris..

I'm sure that Auburn gave him the $5.1 million out of the goodness of their hearts.......even though he chose to resign...

    Just because.

    ReplyDelete
  32. OK, I'll change the subject.

Do you folks think it is
    1) a good sign that 3 huge stud recruits are coming next weekend, so close to signing day
    and
    2) do we have a shot at any of them

    ReplyDelete
  33. FSJ: That's what Jay Jacobs said. It was the right thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous3:50 PM

    michael....

I think Chizik was a great hire..

    ReplyDelete
  35. Like someone said yesterday - Willis is dead to me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sure. Ok. You're right. I've completely changed my opinion.

Did anyone else see/hear the comments by Oku on that youtube clip? He says AU was in the lead during the camp but talked a bunch about Coach Gran.

Good to see him coming in. Who's recruitng this kid? Coach Taylor?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous3:53 PM

Now do I think it is possible that Tuberville found out they were trying to replace him and forced the issue..

    You bet...

    It is still a firing.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If JJ gets fired, I'm going to apply for the job.
Then I am going to spend my day on the HABOTN, telling you everything that is going on and asking the group what I should do about it.
    How could that plan fail?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have it from absolutely no sources that Jacobs will be fired and replaced by Tuberville. I also understand Patrick Fain Dye will jump off a bridge upon hearing the news and lose his pants again.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous3:54 PM

    Anyway..

Jay...have you heard any rumblings from your fellow beat writers about how long Gottfried will last?

    Aubie..

    That is a great idea..

  42. Jet notes ...

    1. Tubs walks in meeting as coach, leaves meeting as ex-coach.

    2. Chiz was unexpected choice. We love him and the Delta Force Z now.

    3. Willis was working with the angels one day, the Devil the next. He sleeps with the fishes soon.

    4. Steve concerned about our reputation. Jet, if he were female, would be Joan Jet (obscure 1980s musical reference).

    The End.

    ReplyDelete
  43. By the way, I am still wondering how I would explain to my wife how I lost my pants. That had to be a special conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous3:57 PM

    Well see...what happened is...

I have lost a bunch of weight...and the darn pants just slipped off.. I didnt' even notice.

If that don't work... Deny, Deny, Deny..

    ReplyDelete
  45. Joan Jett was one of two members of The Runaways that went on to solo success...who was the other?

    ReplyDelete
  46. If Jacobs gets fired, I'm calling his Mom to get the "real story"

Only in the strange, Twilight Zone universe of Auburn reporting/ journalism, is someone's MOTHER deemed a "reliable and credible source."

And please ask my Mother about me. She thinks I'm swell.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If his mother says he was fired, print it.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  65. So, Tubs helped Willis get in touch with Saban, so Jay Jacobs is gonna get canned and Tubs will be hired in his place?

    ReplyDelete
  66. And Lowder and Rane will get married at midfield at halftime of the season opener with Tubs officiating the ceremony.

Jay Jacobs will be Best Man and Maid of Honor. Willis will play the organ.

Clinton Durst will be the ring bearer.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm guessing CGC is focusing on recruits right now instead of coaches. Is it safe to assume we will hire some coaches after signing day? Any news on what is actually happening with candidates?

    ReplyDelete
  68. AUn ... were you the mystery emailer?

    ReplyDelete
  69. would it be safe to assume that IF there's something big, the lid will be kept on (or efforts to that effect) until at least Sunday evening after visitors have left campus?

    ReplyDelete
  70. i'm thinking it "was the right thing to do" because j. sexton had a client who was approached by au ptb and sexton shared that info with tubbs. as this was a direct violation of tubbs' contract, paying him the money became "the right thing to do."

    ReplyDelete
  71. Peter HAHAHA I love your passive aggressiveness. RE: all those other posts, I have shown amazing restraint. Congrats to me.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Jay, do thew players typically arrive for their off. visits tonight? I assume the ones who fly come in via ATL. When their folks come with them, does AU put the family up for the weekend too? Do the players actually stay with their hosts throughout the weekend?

  89. Official visits almost always begin on Friday between 5 and 10 p.m.

Occasionally, like the Oregon DT this weekend, they begin on Thursday.

I don't know about families and how they're accommodated.

Players hosts ... it's not a 24-hour-a-day thing. Most of that hosting is done on Friday and Saturday night.

Hold Auburn Hostage when you were their "Guy", makes no sense....

It was his QB position to have for the taking...Tooooo Bad so Sad!!!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Govols.com had an article stating that UTs' coaches salaries for 2009 would be 5.325 million dollars. Does AU have to release that information or can it remain private? I am just curious to see the total.

  111. Funny story about Frank Tolbert. Back many years ago I can remember at a Jr. League basketball practice a little 6 year old came in with a a 6th finger on each hand and was wanting to shoot on the goal we were using. Some of the other guys started yelling at him, "Go on Frank, Go On now" he got upset and started crying , grabbed his basketball and ran out of the gym. I never saw him again til the day I turned my T.V. on in Kentucky and saw AU playing VA I believe and my jaw about dropped to the floor when I saw Frank Tolbert's name flash up on the TV Screen. He had grown just a little since I saw him last.

This last minute recruiting thing is kinda tripping me out. At one point, it looked like Auburn was going to be done by January 1, and simply maintaining the commits until signing day. Now, WOW, we've got a dude named Oku visiting in late January.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Anonymous5:49 PM

Tubs as AD? Do we really want the guy that hired Tony Franklin as the AD who hires all of the head coaches at Auburn?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Salary information will be released at some point. It takes time to file FOI requests for that stuff ... and to actually receive it.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Following one of the defenses people made for the Chizik hiring, at least he knows what not to do due to his lack of success in that field.

I doubt we'll get many more walk ons that will work hard after the way this staff treated Clinton Durst.

I fear what Auburn will reap for that among the many other recent weirdness.

    ReplyDelete
  129. dowhat--ever run into a mjor ryan over there? bud o' mine. (ang)

    ReplyDelete
  130. Anonymous6:09 PM

I doubt the Durst situation affects any potential walk-ons.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Anonymous6:09 PM

PF, why would a walk on even look at this program now?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Cause they have a dream, Gnome.

    ReplyDelete
  133. New coaches, new system, record indicates low talent level, every job is up for grabs. Auburn's a walk-on's dream.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Anonymous6:15 PM

Why do walk-ons ever look at a program? It seems like a futile battle from the start. Position walk-ons will look at the Durst situation the same as we do, he's a whiny kicker.

Why the heck are we worried about walk-ons, anyway? Most end up as scout team.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Anonymous6:19 PM

I suppose this is one of those agree to disagree moments.

Doesn't matter. Not like Auburn wins the SEC next year. Be lucky to win 2 conference games.

Takes a long time to rebuild.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I agree with you, PF. Non issue to me.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Walk-ons are important. Ask Rod Smith. He will tell you.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Anonymous6:22 PM

Gnome, were you an under appreciated walk-on in a past life? I need to context.

    ReplyDelete
  139. i knew one au walk on named danny skutack. started as an lb. crazy guy. when he and i parted ways in 1977, (we were both military brats), we were about the same size. when he played at au, he had me by nearly 100 lbs...he could deliver the mail.

    ReplyDelete
  140. And jeremy ingle.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Kevin greene wouldve never been able to wrestle ric flair if it wasn't for our walk on program.

    ReplyDelete
  142. And without walk-ons, we would never have had the movie Rudy. I bet you never thought of that. Think about it. Where would the world be without that movie?

    ReplyDelete
  143. I still hold that a conversation about the effect on walk-ons is next to ridiculous.

However, in the spirit of the HABOTN, I'll add this: How many of the walk ons that you name would have been affected had a Durst-esque situation had happened prior to their enrollment? My guess is zero. It doesn't fit in with the mentality of a walk-on.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Anonymous6:31 PM

I say we go no-punt next year... or at least rarely-punt. It sounds crazy, but the stats (and the coach who does it) back this approach:

    http://is.gd/h1rJ

    http://is.gd/h1rC

    ReplyDelete
  145. And yea, I thought not given Durst a scholarship was a bonehead move. I just hope we don't pay for it like we did with Robert McGinty. Some things are no brainers. Giving a scholarship to walkons that become starters is a no brainer. There are scholarships wasted on players (Hart) that rarely if ever play.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I like the no punt concepts. We line up in a 3 deep power I and run on every single play. With 4 downs, it will be 2.5 yards and a cloud of dust football.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Anonymous6:36 PM

Haha if you want to approach it that way you can, but I think Malzhan can average more than 2.5 yards per play with his offense.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Walk-ons are important, of course. But the bottom line is that our schollies are gold -- absolute gold.

I don't think we can't afford to spend a nugget d'or right now for a punter. We've got one on scholarship, and three more will surely walk on this summer.

I hate it that Durst leaves with bad feelings, but this ain't intramurals.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Yea, well, I am talking a consistent 2.5 yards and consistent injuries, given and received.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Punting can cost us ballgames. Ask Ryan Shoemaker. He will tell you.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Anonymous6:40 PM

...and wouldn't Durst's story INSPIRE walk-ons at Auburn? Despite the scholarship situation, he fulfilled the dream of a Walk-On, starting and becoming a star(sic).

    ReplyDelete
  152. Anonymous6:41 PM

Haha, or you could go the opposite way to the offense my roommate likes to suggest for teams that struggle on offense. Just throw deep every play. Odds are you score a couple times on pure luck. Remember 3-2? Exactly.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Someone needs to shoot this conversation and put it out of my misery.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I think we have a shot with Oku. He was high on us before the Tony Franklin experiment. He feared that we would get away from power running and dropped us.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Anonymous6:56 PM

Apparently Atchinson and Benton showed up for surprise visits this weekend. War Eagle!

(I don't have a rivals password, I recognized Atchinson's photo and went to the AL.com comments to find Benton's name)

    ReplyDelete
  156. Anyone know who the mystery visitors being reported on rivals are?

    ReplyDelete
  157. Ah, thanks Blake. I recognized the face but didn't feel up to doing the research. Wasn't Atchinson an Auburn recruit at one point?

    ReplyDelete
  158. Anonymous7:01 PM

Yes he was, looks like he might be one again soon. Currently committed to 'Bama.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Don't know a lot about budget for the athletic department but I think we will surpass last years recruiting budget.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Atchinson coming may be a sign. A while back I heard that Bama was encouraging him look around because they had higher LB prospects they felt they would get. I will forgive him for his indiscretions with the evil empire but only because he's 6-3

    ReplyDelete
  161. Anonymous7:08 PM
