Saturday updates

Hey everyone. Hello from rainy Montgomery, where AUM and Faulkner will tip off at 4 p.m. CST. I know you're excited.

Let's get to business.

RECRUITING CHATTER
  • Our friends at AuburnSports.com and AuburnUndercover.com are reporting that Les Tigres have added a pair of high-profile prospects to their weekend. LB Jonathan Atchison of Atlanta and WR Deangelo Benton are learning about the Tigers' program.

Atchison committed to Auburn once upon a time. He's currently an Alabama commitment.

He was James Willis before James Willis became that James Willis.

Benton twice has signed with LSU -- once out of a Louisiana high school (2007) and once out of Hargrave Military Academy (2008). He spent the fall of 2008 back in high school. Benton remains a coveted prospect.

  • LB Deontae Skinner of Macon, Miss., canceled his visit scheduled for this weekend. He remains a Mississippi State commitment.

DL - I busted out laughing when I saw the address again. Did you save it or memorize it?

And thanks for the new thread JGT. Computer biz was tiresome to read through.

How did the game end up?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Lunch fund. Nice.

    I can afford lunch!

(A second XBox 360 is a bit out of reach at the moment, though.)

  9. We had a fourth-quarter surge, but we lost by one goal.

    ReplyDelete

JGT - Will you get a chance to rap with the recruits tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Jay we have arrived. Damn wifeys haircut takes forever.

Too bad about skinner. Jay what time we expect the Recruiting update tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I expect to speak with a majority of recruits tomorrow. Absolutely.

    I wouldn't expect any updates before 9:30. I expect t have periodic updates from 9:30 to 12:30 ... with a full recap around 2.

The women's game tips at 2, so I'll be on a very tight schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  15. JGT..

actually the money is for you to take me to lunch..

    ReplyDelete
  16. As dictator of a rich country, you don't need finanical assistance.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jay G Tate,

I am curious about your thoughts about CGC. You don't hear much about in the press. Is he going to be hard to deal with or can you get sense yet. Is he going to work the crowds like Tubby or be more like Saban? Thanks for your work and updates.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Chizik hasn't really been talking with reporters since taking this job. I can't really say.

As far as dealing with the media during his days as defensive coordinator, he was average.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Jay,
Do you think we are going to hear about additional coaches before signing day? Any rumors about who they might be?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous10:11 AM

Wow, I can't remember the last time following recruiting was actually fun. It's pretty cool seeing players that are essentially known entities showing some interest in Auburn. I was getting a little tired of always hearing stuff from Tub's staff about how everyone they were recruiting was underrated, "fit the program" or "were high character guys." Most importantly though, it makes me feel better about the university as a whole. It shows that AU isn't as far behind in the quality of facilities, living arrangements, etc. than the old staff may have led us to believe over the last few years.

    War Eagle!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks for the french lesson, jay. All planning the V'tines and creole menu and no play make bart a dull boy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous10:14 AM

Peter Frankenschmidt on the Tamiami Trail.

So, some idiotic UM fan caller on 790theticket in Miami just called in and said "its a longshot, but we should go after Tuberville as our DC, that way we'd have a top notch DC, and a HC in line if Shannon doesn't work out." I almost wrecked the car laughing...

Jay G, expect a lunch fund check soon. Save it for Furlough week :-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for the update Jay...We are seeing a good bit of last minute recuiting going on with this staff. Jay, was Deangelo Benton a total surprise visit, or did he reschedule from the last time? Kinda figured LSU had this kid locked up. Also, how does stack up against say a Reubin Randle in your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous10:17 AM

New coach, pidgeon-holed into being compared to Tubs or Saban.

    Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Opps! That should be Rueben Randle.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I know almost nothing about Deangelo Benton. Really. He didn't play anywhere last season.

As for additional assistants, I don't think those guys will be hired until February. That's just a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anonymous10:19 AM

Is Joe Whitt going to coach LBs? That's the million dollar question. And, if he is, how long has he known? Mid December?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Funny stuff Crud.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous10:23 AM

Benton is physically stronger and more freakish than Randle...today. Randle's still a thin ladd yet loaded with fast twitch goodies.

Benton is one year and done (to NFL).

    ReplyDelete
  30. Crudup has returned!!! We should have a parade. Where in the world have you been my friend?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous10:25 AM

Alan , your hair is a wonderland.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous10:26 AM

    Good Morning Hotties....

Do the Auburn women play Tennessee today?

If so, good luck. Hope the Tigers win.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't EVER remember Tubs being anything but flippant over recruiting. That loss of zeal over recruiting seemed to find it's way into his coaching philosophy as well, He got as lazy about coaching as he did recruiting.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous10:27 AM

Been hiding, Phred. Someone told me if Obama was elected that I should sell all my possessions and hide in a cave somewhere in the southeast region of Flint.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dougherty county crud?

That's what they say about my hair.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I'm glad to see they have internet service in the Caves of Flint. Good that you have come out of hiding. Us old timers have to band together.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Band of brothers if you will......

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous10:33 AM

Peter Frankenschmidt is being slowed down by a large chapter of the gold wing club.

crudup, you jest, but wayne heizenga (that's not even close to the correct spelling) sold the Dolphins for over a billion bucks last week for that reason. granted, he's not havimg to hide in a cave due to florida homestead laws, but I think the billion dollar bills are stuffed in his mattress.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kinda like Dalton and Sam Elliot.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous10:34 AM

I agree. It's always good to have a legendary bar bouncer like Alan on our side, too.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes it eats you....

    Saspirilla anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  42. When did the counting the first three come aboot?

    Just axing.

Atchison visiting, is that a surprise?

And Jay, what do you know about which coach has what areas now? Who's taking Mobile? I hope Taylor.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Very sad that Kay Yow, Hall of Fame coach of NC State, passed away today.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous10:39 AM

I heard Atchison mingled late with the AU hotties last night.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Are you serious Clark?

A recruit on here? So, its true what they say.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous10:41 AM

Alan, talked to Kurt F'n Crain lately?

    ReplyDelete
  47. If by mingling, do you mean the hibbidy dibbidy?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonymous10:42 AM

    Rest in Peace Kay

    ReplyDelete
  49. Damn, Paula Deen's cooking brats in beer and onion rings. In HD on a FITTY, damn...

    My wife's in the room.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anonymous10:43 AM

I meant the physical, all female hotties that frequent the AU night scene on sultry Friday nights.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I got even better hoops than Jay G ... I've got the Saint James-Montgomery Academy blood boiler ... some serious below the net hoops.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Both!

Turbo Prop and the Stewardess will be doing their thing in the STJ pep band.

    ReplyDelete
  53. MOnica ... she was a courageous, class act. Met her at an NCAA women's regional many, many moons ago.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous10:47 AM

Peter Frankenschmidt is enjoying the woman's Toyota Camry.

Jay G, why exactly are you covering AUM hoops, anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Gotcha...Who's recruitng him?

    If the kid can play he has the chance to see the field next year if he signs with AU;

    ReplyDelete
  56. It's a shame about Kay Yow. Only two weeks ago she was talking about renewing her energy and returning next year.

Interesting comments from Tyler Knight. He's been loyal to Auburn so the new staff said they'd be loyal to him. They've changed the position they're recruiting him for - from OL to TE. I think there are two messages there 1) We want larger, heavier linemen now (as seen with the OL de-commit in Texas) and 2) even though Knight doesn't fit with the new staff's plans they'll stay with him because of his loyalty. Good for them.

David Conner didn't stay loyal and paid the price. He's a Blazer now.

    ReplyDelete
  57. comcast unclogged the tubes that connect my house to the interwebs with some kind of upgrade. my computer is blazing this morning!

    ReplyDelete
  58. The hotties can really make a difference. Rumor has it we lost Jarmon Fortson to FSU last year because of a hottie he met while visiting.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous10:59 AM

Astat would you like to expound on that?

    ReplyDelete
  60. He wants it Crud

    ReplyDelete
  61. Jet, I will be at the game today also. daughter is a cheerleader.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anonymous11:12 AM

So Auburn hasn't offered Tryik Rollison yet but K-State has...I'm thinking once we offer he's comittin'

    ReplyDelete
  63. Alan: The Dude abides.

Kay Yow was one of the good guys, er, gals. Extremely nice person.

I like covering AUM/Faulkner. Two teams that go about things in a completely different way. Faulkner is meticulous; AUM is street ballin' to the extreme.

It's a blast watching them go at it twice per year. Plus, the game draws a big crowd by Montgomery standards. It's electric ... boogie woogie woogie.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous11:30 AM

I'm surprise this Hargrave Military Academy isn't investigated. Student-athletes spend one year, sometimes less, at this place and go all over the country.

Does anyone actually graduate from this place or is it 12th and half grade?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Gnome,

First Walk-ons and now Hargrave? Man, you're killing me. At least you're interesting.
    Enjoy This

    ReplyDelete
  66. 12th and a half, exactly.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Umm, Kerry Murphy went to Hargrave and he wasn't just pushed through.

He slapped his drill Srgt. with 2 weeks left and had to FAIL.

Got that from my inside Hoover sources.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I know three who have already signed -- is there a 4th already signed?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anonymous11:51 AM

Hoover High shouldn't be allowed to play football anymore.

The fact that they got away with cheating and only had to fire the coach is ludicrous. Of course, some of those same people elected LArry Langford.

    Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Gnome,
I haven't found a single person who said they voted for Langford. Still trying to figure out how he got elected.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anonymous11:57 AM

I wonder how much longer he'll stay in office after being arrested by the Feds?

There should be a contest on here. Who will last longer:
    Larry Langford or Gene Chizik

    ReplyDelete
  72. Chizik has at least two years, so make your assessments based on that.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I don't think Larry can last two years

    ReplyDelete
  74. Anonymous12:01 PM

Maybe a better contest would be who will soon have a new job:

Larry Langford - making license plates

Tommy Tuberville - coaching or AD

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't think Langford can make it six months. No way.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Auburn's playing basketball if your in Auburn CH. 12

    ReplyDelete
  77. Auburn vs. Arkansas and Auburn is playing like Auburn again...

    ReplyDelete
  78. Anonymous12:11 PM

How would Hoover residents elect Larry Langford?

Langford is a joke, but I don't think you can blame him on Hoover.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Anonymous12:13 PM

When I worked in downtown Bham I used to see Langford all the time at the Alabama Power building for breakfast.

    He's a sharp dressed man..

Of course he should be according to the indictment.

    ReplyDelete
  80. When can we fire Lebo?

    ReplyDelete
  81. au is looking pretty good through the 1st 10 minutes--except for free throws...

    ReplyDelete
  82. Anonymous12:23 PM

Today is the end for Gottfried IMO.

    Barring a miracle of course.

    ReplyDelete
  83. The fact that they got away with cheating and only had to fire the coach is ludicrous. Of course, some of those same people elected LArry Langford.

Ummmm, Hoover High School and the Mayor of Birmiongham --- Ummmm, let's see.

Ummmm, well, I'm speachless but you get an E for effort.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous12:25 PM

Chris you do know that Hoover residents can't elect the mayor of Birmingham...right?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Does playing like AUBURN mean up on Arky on the road?

Yeah, fire him now because there's another great BBall coach chomping at the bit to get to AU.

    ReplyDelete
  86. 6 of 7 from three point range, at the present.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Anonymous12:26 PM

    Sorry Chris...

I thought you made the previous post..

    It was Gnome..

    ReplyDelete
  88. maybe if au shot their free throws from the 3 point stripe, we'd be better at them.

    ReplyDelete
  89. [blank stare] Huh? [/blank stare]

    ReplyDelete
  90. Some good flicks on as well.

Training day just begun in spike.

    ReplyDelete
  91. and A Few Good Men about to wrap up.....

    "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  92. I was just getting the fire Lebo saying out of the way...

    ReplyDelete
  93. Good afternoon Hotties.

Re: DeAngelo Benton... he was Scout's 7th rated WR in 2007. I'd prefer Randle but would be happy with either/both PLUS DeQuinta Jones. My favorite new group... the Bastrop Boys

    ReplyDelete
  94. Arkansas girls are ugly! Thank god I go to Auburn...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Question: Did I read correctly that CGC told C. Durst that he would have a shot at winning a scholly in the summer?

Not that he couldn't have one but he could win one?

So, why has Durst decided not to try in the summer? He can't work now and go to school and then when the summer comes around, go for the spot. Is this an opition or not?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Inverness Chris...

you are in the Avatar Hall o Fame with that one...

    ReplyDelete
  97. What are the Arkansas fans yelling when we shoot free throws?

    ReplyDelete
  98. That's me on holiday in Aruba.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I don't play basketball and I'm not discounting the difficulty, but should hitting free throws be this hard? Seems like with practice that should be the easiest part of this game.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Chris: You have the facts straight and, no, I have no idea why Durst wouldn't at least attempt to earn a scholarship.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I was just putting together a list of Auburn's 2008 scholarship players.

Man, check out this depth chart:

    LINEBACKER (9)
    LB Tray Blackmon
    LB Courtney Harden
    LB Merrill Johnson
    LB Chris Evans
    LB Craig Stevens
    LB Josh Bynes
    LB Spencer Pybus
    LB Adam Herring
    LB Da'Shaun Barnes

BOLD means they're out or likely out for 2009.

    ReplyDelete
  102. HARD TIMES.

Eltoro Freeman should be an immediate contributor, but that's some seriously limited depth. I haven't heard a single word spoken about Barnes or Herring in ages ...

    ReplyDelete
  103. Jay are you going to the Auburn women's basketball game tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  104. 5 SHOTS ON THE BASKETBALL AND YOU CAN'T GET IT TO GO INTO THE HOOP!!! Maybe it's a good thing we are just shooting 3's

    ReplyDelete
  105. Anonymous12:50 PM

    Auburn plays very hard....

    ReplyDelete
  106. Anonymous12:51 PM

    Barber is really really overrated.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Barber doesn't have a position.

Kind of a 3. Kind of a 4. Not really a strong candidate at either position.

    ReplyDelete
  108. One thing this group of coaches CAN sell this year at the LB spot its PLAYING TIME.

    PT p'er babay.

I've said for a while that the LB corps has been limited in depth and the PROOF was Spencer Pybus being jsut a hair late on the LSU play and on the field early on.

THAT'S why J. Willis leaving doesn't break my heart but I am baffled.

Losing Bo "________" hurts as well. (Harrison?)

    Anyway, Atchison should see that.

    ReplyDelete

AJC is reporting this morning the availability of Marcus Ball. With Florida and others showing interest in him, it seems like Auburn should throw their hat into the ring also.

By Rob Morton | Saturday, January 24, 2009, 11:21 AM

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Former AJC Super 11 player Marcus Ball of Stephenson appears headed back to Div. I. After two years at Florida State, Ball transferred to Pearl River Community College (Miss.) this past fall and was named first-team All-American as a safety.

Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Clemson and Florida seem to be the leaders. He is scheduled to finish his academic requirements in May. Ball is the younger brother of former Georgia Tech quarterback Reggie Ball.

“If there was a better player in our league, I don’t know who he was,” Pearl River coach Tim Hatten told the Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Miss. “He’s like an NFL player. He’s got a linebacker’s body at safety and an aggressive nose for the football. He’s the best defensive back we’ve had here. By far.”

  112. Don't know where you can catch it online JZ, but we can give you updates.

    ReplyDelete
  113. The link I sent is a tad bit off but at least you can watch the game....

    ReplyDelete
  114. Does this team just run out of gas the 2nd half?

    ReplyDelete
  115. Thanks guys... Mr. Jay G. Tate, have been to an Auburn basketball practice? Do they even practice free throws?

    ReplyDelete
  116. We just made 2 free throws!!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Jay should go to practice and show them how to hit free throws...

    ReplyDelete
  118. anyone see the beat down duke issued to maryland?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Maybe that should be Mr. Jay G. Tate's furlough week plan. Go to Auburn and put on a free throw clinic.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Wow...it's quiet in here. Anybody care to name their favorite 80's alt-country/cowpunk band? I'm torn between Jason & The Scorchers and Walk the West.

    ReplyDelete
  121. just saw a movie ("control") about a group called the joy division--punkish band in late 70s, early 80s. good movie, good soundtrack (remaining members of the band put it together).

    ReplyDelete
  122. why did lebo take that timeout? we're on a roll.

    ReplyDelete
  123. OK ... I take my tdaughter to a birthday party and I come back home .... WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?

Did any of you call the police to report a kidnapping? Clearly, someone took the AU basketball team and replaced them with competent players!

    ReplyDelete
  124. PUT IN JAKE DRUM!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  125. WARRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  126. That was a pasting. Man I love it when we win sporting events.

    ReplyDelete
  127. How about that Auburn wins by 22 at Ark!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Arkansas: Two points in the last nine minutes.

I guess that is Lebo defense for you ...

    ReplyDelete
  129. Yep - Barber's way overrated.

Who has more rebounds than points?

    ReplyDelete
  130. Dennis Rodman? Ben Wallace?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Also, I just sent back "In Bruges" to Nextflix and need another good'un for my queue.

I have "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" in there next, good movie?

"In Burges" is pretty good. It was really neat that I have actually visited that city. Everything dates back to the 12-13th centuries.
