Prospect assessments, part II

Hey everyone. You all keep exceeding my expectations with comment banter. There is no doubt that the HABOTN is home to the deepest, brightest and most introspective Auburn fans (and an occasional Alabama stray) on the Interwebs.

Thanks for being cool.

OK. So I promised more recruit assessments. I met eight of the nine prospects in town last weekend. I provided assessments of Nosa Eguae, Emory Blake, Brandon Moore, John Sullen and Anthony Gulley yesterday.

Here is the other half:

  • DeQuinta Jones, defensive lineman from Bastrop, La.: He committed to Michigan last summer, but is considering all options. Jones is a fairly introspective guy. He's laid-back in real life. I heard a few people call him "Tyson" (a la the insane boxer), though I didn't get the reference. I got the feeling that he's intrigued with Auburn much like Emory Blake: Auburn is new on the scene to them and, as such, it's handicapped because it's unknown. Judging from what I heard Sunday, Auburn has a decent chance with him. Maybe 40%?

  • Tana (Tuh-NAY) Patrick, linebacker from Stevenson: Comes off cocky. Not the brash kind of cocky. He doesn't say a lot at a time. Patrick probably is the most high-profile guy Auburn is pursuing. He's headed to Southern Cal this weekend and Miami after that. Alabama is mighty interested as well. He doesn't seem excitable. He appears to be an all-business kind of fellow.

  • Demond Washington, all-purpose player from Tallassee (via a Mississippi junior college): He's playful. He has a lot of energy. I loved his line about how there may not be a lot of trouble lurking around Tallassee ... but it's hard to get away from it once you're in. My first impression is that Washington eventually will sign with Auburn, though he's an Ole Miss commitment right now. He was enthusiastic about the things he heard last weekend. He plays wideout, tailback and cornerback. I don't know what the Tigers' plans are there. He seems willing to play any position as long as he's on the field.

  • Donald "Dee" Ford from Odenville: He's the one guy I missed. Bummer.

  6. Dear Leader, I don't see why we should leave up the posts saying "uno" when you're not uno.

If you disagree, speak it now.

  7. What do you think about Clint Mosely? Is it a pr move or do they think he will develop into a SEC caliber player.

  8. Typing uno is like yelling out "you da man" at a golf tournament. you know somebody is going to do it, no matter how much you hate it.

  9. Jay, thank you for all your hard work on the commitment (or hoped fors) front. I wouldn't know any of this info if it wasn't for you.

  10. Is it too late for UA-T to get Clint? Didn't he grow up a bammer fan? Seems like everyone is interested in him now.

  12. Jay GT- yet another wonderfully written and informative fix for my HABOTN addiction.

reminds me of the Blog Help Group link I stumbled on yesterday when I hit "reload." I figured it wasn't really the kind of help I need.

  13. I read today that Saban said he selling Mercedes when it comes to his program at the capstones...Does that mean he is a car salesman? Maybe a cryptic message to recruits?

I was also at the senior bowl practice where he popped a little bama fan kid in the eye by telling him he wasn't here to sign autographs. You got love him.

  16. My guess here -- and it's strictly conjecture -- is that Ole Miss has moved ahead in the Raymond Cotton quest. Auburn needed to get something in place at quarterback.

Moseley is a "winner" kind of quarterback. He's shrewd and he's at least somewhat fast. I think his arm is weak compared to most SEC quarterbacks, which seems like a problem when matched with Guz Malzahn's love for the deep ball.

Malzahn apparently disagrees with my assessment. We'll see in a few years.

  17. I always yell out, "I am just trying to get my ball lady. I am not trespassing."

  19. Jay GT- sounds like you've been watching a lot of recruit videos. Perhaps a side business brewing?

  20. Amen and welcome, Minister

  21. Is it not reasonable to expect his arm to get stronger with the proper training? I mean, he's a 17/18 year old kid at a small school where they probably don't have much of a strength and conditioning program. He's fairly skinny and could stand a cheeseburger or three... I expect as he matures for his arm to get stronger.

Will it get to the point of other SEC QB's? Might not, but will be serviceable. I'm guessing that is what Malzahn expects.

  22. No way.

Bryan and Jeffrey and ITAT Mark and Jason Caldwell and Stephen Atkinson ... they have the market cornered on videos. It's really amazing how much information those networks have available.

  23. Miller, your point is good.

The NFL is loaded with players who received little recruiting hype.

Kodi Burns has a strong arm. That didn't help last season ...

  24. I have watched his tape and he reminds me of a more nimble Cox. I say that because he throws seem accurate and if you look the int's he threw last year it was something like 5. I feel he has a lot of upside. I am sick of hearing the critics around here. I hope he breaks it off in them in a few years. AJ down here has way to much hype and it seems if you say something positive about Clint they take it as an insult.

  25. I hope Clint turns into our very own "Mad Bomber", preferably without the penchant for slugging teammates

  26. N20RU arrived Wichita around 10:30 and leaving around 2:10 CST. Not much time to visit. I would assume Bryce is in class today. Wonder exactly what the AU coaches did while there. Anyone with knowledge of how these daytime visits work on a school day?

BTW, plane going to Dallas, not AU when it leaves Wichita.

  27. Ok, it's slow here at work because of the snow.

Wichita Schools not in session today, so I guess coaches met with Bryce.

(For those interested, the Wichita school calendar is available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese)

  29. A sampling from the inaugural luncheon:

A choice of: seafood stew in puff pastry, duck breast with cherry chutney, herb roasted pheasant with wild rice stuffing, molasses whipped sweet potatoes, winter vegetables

The man has good taste in food.

  30. Thanks for the info Jay. I read an article this am on Washington and he made it sound like he'll sign with Oe Miss. Hope he signs with AU though.
