Rollison picks Les Tigres
TUESDAY NOONISH
Post No. 1,005
Hey everyone. Our friends at AuburnSports.com are reporting that QB Tyrik Rollison of eastern Texas has committed to play for the Auburn Tigers next season. As we all know, Rollison is a highly rated quarterback who throws fairly well and runs very well.
There are questions about Rollison's academic status, though, so keep that in mind. Still, this is an important addition to a recruiting class that has been significantly upgraded since 12/3/08.
COMPLETELY UNRELATED NOTE: John Updike, one of the best writers ever, has died of lung cancer in Boston. He was 76.
He was the man behind The Best Baseball Essay Ever Written, "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" in 1960. It's about Ted Williams' final at-bat. It was a home run.

Turn the page....
I can quibble here and there, but I think there's a solid argument to make us 16 that would be hard to overcome ... but as da Queen said, it's ESPN.com, and they've got UAT pimp Ivan doin' the writin', so I shall not waste any more time.
Will, you have to wait to the second trimester.
I will give Ivan credit, he wrote one of my favorite Auburn articles of all time:
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/maisel/031120auburn.html
My work place blocks espn, but not si or fox sports or rivals. It may be a blessing in disguise
very nice article Mickey -- Have you read the one by Van Pelt?
I think he was dating an AU girl at the time - It was quite moving as well.
Mon, according to OA News, it was a 19 yr old student named Zachary James Quillen. He turned himself in and was released on bond. Not sure if he had any fraternity affiliation.
Van Pelt's http://mikewhitley.com/blog/2004/11/espns-scott-van-pelts-thoughts-on.html
The Syracuse writer from 2002....:
http://mikewhitley.com/blog/2004/11/go-to-auburn-be-forever-changed.html
Sorry, couldn't find original links
Thanks, Will.
Good articles, inverness. I remember reading the Syracuse one back in the day, but the van pelt one was new to me. Where did he post that? I was a little surprised at the grammatical errors. I know he posts in message boards from time to time, so that is probably where it came from.
If we Land David Oku and one more highly regaurded WR like Blake, these coaches have done a magnificant job.
Taikwon Paige (DB) is a good shot of picking up this weekend as well. Another 4 star will help national perception.
Inverness: He was dating an AU girl at the time and still does from time to time
I didn't post here during last recruiting season, so I can't comment on what the atmosphere was like, but it seems like last year there were quite a few Auburn fans who just didn't care about stars, and Alabama could take their highly touted class and shove it, what happens on the field is what matters, etc. Sooo..... now that we get a couple of people with stars, it seems more and more people do care about them after all.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Mikal,
I wish they would spend more time on qualifiers.
Stars excite people, whether they pretend to like them or not. I still think they are pretty meaningless.
Michael, It's exactly the opposite on the Bama sites. They loose a few to someone else and all of a sudden the stars don't mean so much any more. That is of course after crowing about stars for the past three months.
The stars are a perception thing. More times than not, the teams that are consistently in the top 10 in recruiting (based on stars)are in the top 10 during the season.
I don't really care if we win a 'crutin national championship or not. So, in that respect stars don't matter that much to me. But, I do subscribe to the theory that it is much easier to coach talented players than it is to coach no talent hacks. So, I guess I do want stars.
Recruiting services don't always get it right, they are out to make money first and foremost. I want talented players to come to AU. Usually the really talented ones will have those stars, sometimes the online service doesn't know as much about the player and miss their eval on him. Bottom line... X's and O's don't work as well if you don't have the Jimmie's and the Joe's.
It's good to see this staff go after the Jimmie's and Joe's.
Rivals.com now has Auburn listed at #19 for recruiting. Alabama dropped a notch to #5. Jack
PF, while we agree on a great deal of things, I must disagree with you. Stars are a pretty good indicator of how good a player will be, though there are numerous examples of people with stars not panning out (particularly qbs). But I would have been ecstatic if we had the recruiting class Alabama had last year.
My comment was more aimed at the sunshine crowd - whatever Auburn is currently doing is the best possible thing that could be happening at Auburn, whether it be getting a bunch of no-name recruits or getting a recruit with a bunch of stars who won't play here. By the way, I am not really talking about people here, this post is much more applicable to the morons constantly defending Auburn's honor at AL.com
...but what about the no-stars that are stars.
...and walk-ons.
To really understand, I need to know what PM is saying about stars this year.
There are some poor souls on al.com that have serious issues and serious inferiority complex or self-esteem issues or something. I don't know if it's mommy and daddy issues or they just need a hug or what... But, some of those folks need to get a grip.
Peter, you are selling yourself short. Rivals has a you a 3-star.
Stars are important, not be all, end all.
But for where Auburn is RIGHT NOW ... stars are a little more important than in previous years. We need positive energy and attention. That helps build momentum, which is crucial for where we are and where we want to go.
Ultimately, we need to do better in state. I like the group we're getting, but we're going to have to address the in-state issues.
Oh. Got the two star from scouts.
Good point, Jet. Auburn does need the stars this year to create buzz and let future recruits no that all of the negative energy of the past year has passed. In that regard, I guess I'm cool with Tyrik's star power.
al.com is crap. It's either total homers or total bashers. I read the articles (which are good for the most part) and have to keep myself from scrolling any further down.
This years class was predicated on working previously established relationships.
Next year, I think they will work hard to flip the in state momentum. They'll have time to build relationships in state. This year was important to salvage... And I think they have the chance to exceed expectations in that regard.
Next year is important and will tell the true test of how good of a recruiting staff this will be.
does anyone know how many outstanding offers Auburn has?
There are several really good ones, IMO... But, I don't know how many would be considered outstanding.
by outstanding, I meant scholarship offers that have not committed to Auburn or somewhere else, that there's still a chance of landing. I don't know if this can be fully answered, though, because there are some that still haven't committed anywhere, but are beyond longshots for Auburn.
I am shocked at Deangelo Benton's coach's comments.
I guess you can get away with blatant homerism when you are the only major program in the state.
Still, it borders on innappropriate and unethical.
jgt, les tigres=les bleus?
Next year you'll see us getting some of these big name guys. Trooper and Luper are the real deals. May even land a couple this year. Stranger things have happened.
Michael:
I think the yearning for sunshine has more to do with the train wreck that was Auburn football in 2008 than a Pollyanna mentality. Even with a healthy sense of humor, it's hard to survive that nuclear winter without a need to seek warmth from any source available. Whether it's recruiting, coaching hires, a contract for new shoes ... who cares?
Any port in a storm (of dumbasses).
Jet....I don't buy the contrived emotions argument. Fans irrationally screamed against Tubs and made his job much tuffer...recruiting, etc. Now those same fans are irrationally pumping up expectations and dare to challenge others for mentioning possible problems. It was OK for you to complain, but not others? I guess after a couple of loses by the new coaching group....this same irrational group will be all over the new coaches also, especially if the PTB turn on the coaches again and start up the spin machine.
This coaching group has done a credible job making up for the damage caused by the actions of the PTB. IMO, our recruiting class would have been much better if we had the previous coaches. The previous coaches may not have satisfied the recruiting junkie's desire to watch more top recruits come to AU, but we quietly would have had a top 15 class of recruits and we could count on those recruits to not have embarrasing discipline porblems.
Our broad range of recruit invitees are starting to look a little like the the Fulmer classes of the early 2000's. Plenty of stars...but, have no idea about character.
Thought this was interesting:
"I was eating lunch a Slayden's BBQ (Bastrop) and in walks a barage of Auburn Football wind suit wearing bastards w/ some of the Bastrop High coaches. ....."
http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/messagetopic.asp?p=11896308
Here's a status report on Brad Bradshaw's "Sleazy Imbecile of the Year" campaign (his parents get points too for his name).
He's doing fine on imbecility. The sleaziness score is aided considerably by the USA Today story:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/football/2006-08-30-bastrop-high_x.htm
Nice....
Some coach that Bradshaw!
So do we really want a player from this scuzzball school? Why don't we focus our efforts elsewhere.
michael: Good switcheroo on Bastrop.
Outstanding offers: Auburn has a whole bunch out there. Dozens and dozen.
JayG,
not to dig up a dead horse to beat again BUT,
listening to ESPN and the news break had a guy talking about the way minorities are hired and he mentions "schools like Auburn" that interview minorities for possible "token interviews". No mention of the Tenn hire, Syracuse, Miss st, etc.
why is AU always bashed? b/c we are in the state of AL?
Personally, I believe most AU people don't care what ethnicity, religion, or who the wife is as long he can win and run a good program.
.. and beat Bama
What a bunch of classy fans that was on the tigerdroppings link.
Pretty good crutin' day overall. If we can close on some other great players as fast as we did with Rollison then this class could be alright.
Michael I agree...we say stars dont matter but really most of us have no other way to know if a player is worth a hoot. xCTT had a pretty good record of scouting talent so to a certain extent you could excuse his lack of stars. But in this day and age, stars= + rep. And we need that in bunches.
Hotties!!!
You think LSWho fans are worried about RR? Auburn sent the BIG DOGS Hunting, take a looksie:
"Lunch in Bastrop"
Auburn gets ripped more often because a high-profile, black athlete (and assumed Auburn alum) made the accusation.
I agree with Barkley that a serious situation is brewing on a national scale. I do not believe Auburn is an epicenter.
Additionally, I think Barkley is misinformed on the Lebo hire. They offered the job to Jeff Capel.
Do LSU fans hate us more than we hate them? I mean, we think they smell like corndogs, and are split on whether its a cool place to visit (I personally have enjoyed my two visits to Red Stick, but I don't know that we hate them. We hate Bamzos. I hate the retarded "tigerbait" cheer, but can't say I have anything beyond a mild dislike for LSU fans. I do hate Gaytors, though.
I will be live blogging the men's game beginning at 7 p.m.
I'm a lemming; it's what I do.
Thanks for that tiger droppings link. It was a nice change from reading what bammers think. Bammers are arrogant little buggers. On the other hands, LSU fans are openly hostile!
So are you on the plains Mr. JGT?
Live blogging = lemming?
Thanks for the link, Mobile. Interesting.
I will be live blogging.
I am on the Plains. Spoke with Nell Fortner and Whitney Boddie earlier for a story I'll be running Thursday morning.
I don't know about you guys... but for me, there is no love lost with LSU... I can say I have a strong disdain for them... for no real reason exactly, but disdain just the same...
thanks, mobilz
Have to speak up for some of the LSU fans. They know football, they know how to truly tailgate, and most are friendly. I've been down to Batooooon Rouge twice and loved both trips.
...but Tiger stadium is a dump!
The coaches have been in Louisiana all day... hopefully it's a productive trip...
I've had bad experiences with LSU fans both in Baton and at Auburn. Their mascot molested me after one game, but that didn't make up for the rude fans.
Mon, Comments like that keep us at the feet of your throne.
Monica can start a support group for people molested by other people in big animal costumes
PC - Thanks for getting my lame little joke.
Harrison - I have no complaints about the molestation. I've gotten years of joy from telling that little story. :-)
ok, don't start a support group. Start a fetish group
always enjoyed the red stick crowd. even when (or, perhaps, especially) when they come to the plains. of course, things could have changed with all of their nat'l championships, lately.
i was caught in (molested by?) a green wave whilst water skiing once. does that qualify?
Louisiana people are weird, and they are really proud of being weird. They are mostly harmless.
Fetish Group I can handle. What is the name of that fetish where people are very "into" animal costumes?
Scott - Did someone touch you inappropriately as you walked by in a crowd?
hmmmmm....let's see if I got this right.
Omnica is going to start a support group to help animal costume molestation victims recover from the trauma, by converting the trauma into a fetish.
I'll invest in that. Eventually there would be a book deal also.
"Fetish Group I can handle. What is the name of that fetish where people are very "into" animal costumes?"
Wasn't that on CSI? They get into costumes and cuddle in big piles.
i was cold cocked by an uga redneck whilst browsing through records following an au beat down of the bulldogs, once.
the animal costume fetish was on an episode of entourage also
Plushophilia
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/703251/top_10_weird_sexual_fetishes_and_paraphilias.html?cat=7
But they called it something else on CSI.
That CSI episode was great. They even had "scent" bottles they carried around with them. I figure if you are in to that stuff, you might as well give 100%.
Furries
Ummm, could someone explain how the current conversation relates to football? Is there some new recruit I don't know about?
mine wasn't a cuddly experience. the good citizens of athens took care of me, though. several folks chased the redneck down the street. kinda surreal--i was just thumbing through records...i think they lost his scent.
zteve, beats me. hopefully, if there is a new recruit, he's not too cuddly though.
Reviving an earlier argument, I agree with Steve that Todd is the likely starter next year IF his arm is back to full strength.
It may have been coaching but Burns couldn't read the defense and didn't seem to have a good grasp of the limited offense we were running.
Caudle will move to another position. Trotter will challenge Burns for the start if Todd's arm isn't back. Mosely and Rollison will redshirt. Mosely was offered because we HAD to get one decent QB in this class. There was no way to know if Rollison would come and we still don't know if he'll qualify.
QBs tend to be good athletes so they can frequently move to another position to get playing time.
Scott, I spent 6 years at UGA. I assure you that most UGA fans are not like that. Athens is a great college town with a great atmosphere.
Of course, Auburn is better.
Steve - the current conversation is as relative to football as your conversations about computer chips. :-)
nova--no doubt. i know several good uga folks.
There were many more UGA-"neck" fans in the late 70's-early 80's than now.
Athens has become quite cosmopolitan. The Hope Scholly has allowed UGA to raise entrance requirements from below AU in the early 80's to higher than AU now. The "neck" % dropped accordingly.
Hoopie ...
I don't believe I've irrationally pumped up expectations ... I believe we can 5-8 games next year.
I just don't believe message board posts have one thing to do with how difficult it is to recruit.
Anybody can post what they want ... I just don't understand why we can't get excited about some highly regarded commitments.
I figure we're just doomed to disagree ... you clearly think Tuberville could get it done. I don't.
Maybe we have different expectations ... my expectation is that by year 3 we're in the mix for Atlanta, that we will be on a consistent basis, and that our program is moving forward.
Yes Jet, we always disagree on a few issues and of course that's OK.
Since you joined the HABOTN, you have consistently spun snide-negative comments about the departed coaching staff that are detrimental to the AU efforts. Now you are challenging folks that are bringing up something other than sunshine as if that is wrong.
The "negative" recruiting comments were analytical thoughtful and intelligent. Your "mantra" ever since you got here has been snide, emotional, negative and harmful.
I'm not buying the double standard.
Hoopie ...
Only to have the power you ascribe to me.
I advocated change, and, from my little corner of the world, I'm happy we got it.
I hope it works. I think it will.
I will plead guilty to occasional fits of emotion, but I view myself as relatively patient and rational. Harmful? Who was injured? Detrimental? To whose detriment?
My main issue is that people who have celebrated recruiting victories have been slammed for irrationally raising expectations.
Anyway, so we're different. To each his own.
So, War Eagle. One day, when we're in the SEC championship game, hunt me down. I'll buy a Varsity chili dog and a frosted orange.
But it better be soon, or Chiz needs to go. (I'm kidding).
Being negative sucks. Why be down?
Auburn doesn't stay down long, never has, never will.
