Ted Roof chatter
1/9/09 AFTERNOON
Hey everyone. Just spent a few minutes talking with Ted Roof, the Tigers' new defensive coordinator. Here are a few things I learned.
Hey everyone. Just spent a few minutes talking with Ted Roof, the Tigers' new defensive coordinator. Here are a few things I learned.
- He is a 4-3 guy without question. All the shifting and movement he showed at Minnesota was done "because that's what we had to do." Expect Auburn to be more base as time moves on.
- He has watched film from three Auburn games so far, and is just getting an overview of what the Tigers have from a staffing standpoint. ``They have some really good players here. It's just the kind of talent I'd expect at Auburn."
- He hasn't yet worked much on recruiting. ``That's something we'll get working on today. My understanding is that the (former coaches) did a nice job getting a class together. Now we just have to add some players based on what we need."

Jay Tate, could this new staff pull offers from some of the kids who have rec'd them? What about if the kid has already committed? I'm sure this would be very heavily criticized if the new staff decided to do so.
Do you know if it is common for new coaches to "pull" offers once they take the reins?
It's rare for any staff to pull offers.
I don't think this staff plays that way. If they're trying to create goodwill among the high-school community, they'd be wise to honor the Tuberville commitments. They're planning to do that.
Also, thanks for using my last name. That helps distinguish me from the other Jays around here.
Any comments on specific players that stood out to him on film?
I want AU's defense to be fundamentally sound, but be very agressive at the same time. Pressure the QB, blitz often from different angles.
I wonder if Roof believes in pressure by blitz or by d-line.
Will,
where are your manners.
That is MR. Jay Tate to you sir...
Mr. Jay Tate,
The comment about the other staff doing a good job.
was that stated from his view or what other current coaches on staff had said?
From what I remember from his Tech days Sensible, He wasn't afraid to send the linebackers.... Was pretty aggressive from what I recall.
LT
Jay Tate, I agree, it would be kind of Saban-like to come in and not honor the offers.
Do you know if any of these new coaches have reached out to current players, namely seniors or stand-out to star developing some dialogue. I think if they can get some of the more popular/ respected players (in the other players' eyes), it will work to their advantage.

Since he's been on campus for like 12 hours, I'd say that information has been relayed to him.
I was just going to write "Tate" but then I thought Ben might be in here too.

Thanks, Loganville.

Mr. Jay Tate... at least the current coaches understand they did not walk into a bare closet.
Thanks for all the updates.... Do you get to eat free in Auburn, being a celb and all....
I would refer to him simply as "G", but I'm afraid folks would think I was referring to those commercials (which I have no idea what they are for).
Thank God I'm not alone on those "G" commercials. I haven't a clue either....
LT
Dear Leader, were you trying to imply Mr Jay Tate is celibate?
I think the loss of Blackmon, Slaughter, et al will leave room for the current commits AND any new recruits the new staff can land.
loganville,
you are alone... D.Miller was just being nice... =0)
I thought the G commercials were Gatorade ads.
I usually refer to Mr Jay Tate as "Jay GT". That way I don't think I'm posting a question/comment to myself.
Will, you are correct!
Apparently Will is right. Who knew. I have become so accustomed to Jordan or the history lesson that I never thought it was Gatorade. G is apparently a new low carb drink. Interesting.
D. Miller, we had to do some "Googling" to find out what it was...
Jay G Tate, I've never told you how much I appreciate all the hard work you do for HABOTN. I also appreciate all the info. all the Hotties bring to the HABOTN. I don't go anywhere else to get the latest Auburn info. Thanks, Hotties!
Google is your friend.
A little Friday Pick Up for everyone
Speaking if Googling...I just discovered that Ruben Randle might be the 2nd most famous person from Bastrop, LA. If you get a chance go over and Google, the Bastrop girl's HS B-ball coach.
Also, Barkley won't be calling NBA games anymore. Personal leave of absence was his reason.
The Jay Tate, does a head coach give strength coach goals he must meet for each player or as a team or any at all. I like Yox and understand why he kept him but sometimes a different view on strength is a welcome change.
When is the final day to declare for the draft?
I believe Coffee has announced that he is entering the draft.
Jan. 15.
jan 15?
tigerfan44,
This is the first year I thought Auburn lacked a little in the strength department since Tubs first year.
It may have been by design (i.e. smaller linemen)
I absolutely don't eat free in Auburn.
FYI -- The players now have a pool table and ping-pong table outside the locker room. I ask Kodi about it and ... he was pretty satisfied.
I've been to Bastrup. They have a very large paper mill - makes grocery bag type paper and smells to high heaven. Unfortunately, Randle would be right at home in Tuscaloosa.
FSJ,
Jan 15, I think is the last day to declare.
I saw where Coffee declared for the NFL also.
Wow, that was a slow response time. Sorry, I was distracted by the secretary bringing in my W-2.
Any bets on how much I'll owe or be owed this year?
u got kids d miller? i love mine more and more each April.
Now, dadgummit ... y'all have a Tuberville discussion in the last thread while I'm working.
That's against policy.
If we're talkin' 'bout Tubs, I get to be involved. It's in the constitution.
There's also a big papermill in Cantonment, Fla., not too far from Omnica's home territory of Brewton. Trying to confirm the rumor that she threatened the denizens of Cantonment with a long and protracted torture culminating in death if the offending smell threatened her burg.

So Steele is finally done...people seem to be leaving UAT in a hurry.
Isn't that the truth Tarheel. Unfortunately Washington doesn't have the stones to pass the fairtax
Atchison cancelled his trip..Mr. Wishy Washy
AU1N04,
You psyched about your Ravens this weekend? That should be a slobberknocker!
Saban will have people leave every single season. I know that. You know that. The American people know that.
Honestly, I think it's going to be like that at Auburn now. These guys Chizik is hiring are not career assistants. These are some upwardly mobile guys ...
Sad news about Barkley. Does he still have his TBS gig?
Brewton has it's own offensive odor mill: Smurfit - Stone Container Corporation. It's really between Brewton and Flomaton so you rarely smell it in Brewton.
More info than you wanted, right?
I'll go back to work now. :-)
Jay, Auburn is a family, and I can assure you none of these new assistants will be going anywhere (unless they are fired). They are all vying for the "Coach in Waiting" spot that will be opening up in about 13 years.

Amen BROTHER... sorry I am late..
I like having assistants come and go. New blood brings fresh ideas, sort of like in a normal business. Plus people with fire in their bellies aren't going to sit around cooking barbeque and waiting for retirement. They're going out to make something happen.
An OL coach please!!!!! THANKS!
Mr. Jay Tate,
I don't mind the turnover if it is due to better opportunities. I would like to see more coaches developed internally and promoted within instead of having a new coach come in from the outside. That was one of problem with Tubby's boys. No chance to move up and onward.
If there were to be places that Jay G would eat for free in Auburn, I would make sure to patronize those places when I'm in town...just sayin', a mention on the HABOTN might be worth far more than the few meals that Jay G would eat there.
is Neil Boortz's consumer tax really being discussed here?
Will,
No kids (unless you count the wife who just started med school).
THT,
Would be nice, but I have me doubts PEOTUS BHO would enact such legislation.
Mr. S - I am completely pumped!!
WHAT IS MY NAME!!
lol @ Griff
Jay G, playin' the Bob Dole card... I can see you holding onto the pen like your life depended on it.
Mon,
Don't laugh at Griff. He's the Simple Jack on the interwebs.
KEITH!
