Ted Roof speaks

We'll be starting momentarily.
  • "I'm excited about the opportunity Coach Chizik has afforded me."

  • Which position will you coach?: "(Chizik) has not made a decision about that."

  • Philosophy: "You've still got to stop the run to win football games. What you got to do is try to get people off kilter with going after folks and being aggressive and try to make teams one-dimensional so you can get creative on defense. It's not the schemes that win and lose for you; it's the players that you recruit and that you develop. At the same time, you're only going to be as good as your base defense and your fundamentals allow you to be. Because when you get in that thunderstorm, you've got to have a place you call home. Your base defense and playing fundamental football, just throwing blocks and getting off blocks and tackling and pursuit angles, all the things that seem so elementary to some people but are really the differences between winning and losing."

  • Any coaches in particular shape your ideas?: ``I've been around a lot of good football coaches. I've learned from everybody I've been around. To say it's one person, that would not be accurate. It's a culmination of being around a bunch of people."

  • "It was huge for our defense that Antonio Coleman is coming back. He has a national reputation."

  • "I don't know Paul (Rhoads)."

  • Timetable of hire: Chizik called Minnesota coach Tim Brewster for permission to speak. Flew into Atlanta on Sunday. Drove to Auburn on Monday. Finalized it then."

  • Minnesota improvements: "We knew we had to do a good job with creating takeaways. We did that. I saw a lot of good things happening."

  • Recruiting: "I'm detailed and thorough. It's built on relationships. In the end, the relationships get you over the hump. I love it -- and I love having a great product to sell like Auburn University."

  • What do you remember about Auburn?: "I made this comment to Coach Dye, when you got done playing Auburn it felt like somebody had taken a rubber hose and just beat you with. Back when they ran the bone and kept pounding you. As a football player you always respect the physical teams, the teams that hit you in the mouth."

(Roof played at Georgia Tech from 82-85.)

  • He doesn't know the other Auburn coaches.

  • Other defensive coaches: "Coach Chizik is the head coach and those will be his decisions."

  • He'll start work on Thursday.

  • "Coach Chizik is the head coach and he has the right to involve himself and be involved in every aspect of the program, which most head coaches do and I'm sure he will as well. I look at it as a real plus to have a guy with a defensive background that Gene has and all his expertise that he brings to his staff and to the table."

-Malzahn- Like it. Don't love it. If I am not mistaken he was in charge of the passing game a Tulsa not the running game. He was a high school coach two years ago. Just hesitant really. Not to mention the weather conditions mandated that Tulsa run the ball against Ball St.. However I think the spread can work so we will see. CGC has made some real competent hires so far I am impressed..
-Taylor-Surprise! I am not going to pretend that I knew who Taylor was but now that I do I am very impressed. I think it made up for not getting Garner. So just on his rep I love it.

To quote my best friend, "I'm liking this staff more and more." I'm tired of hearing the so-called "experts" say that Auburn has no chance of suceeding.

6:36 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Morning Everybody! So I was just looking at the list of recruits that are making official visits to Auburn. If in fact they like what's happening there, cause I know they'll love the school, and decide to go to Auburn, do you think that sways the opinion of some of these kids that decided to look elsewhere? And are those kids that decommitted even part of the plan now? Do they fit the Malzahn Chizik/Roof systems? Who would have thought recruiting was going to be this relevant 3 weeks ago.

6:37 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Randle is coming this weekend with about 7 other vistors, mostly commits.

I hear that QB Tyrik Rollison has potential grade issues and that's why his offer list isnt what you'd expect from a player ranked that high. He had Ok St High on his interest list and they have not even offered him yet.

6:46 AM
Blogger Jet said...

OK ... it seems the program now is recruiting players with alliterative names -- Rueben Randle, Bryce Brown.

Blogger mytommyd said...

Does that mean Billy Batson, Clark Kent, and Peter Parker are on their way too?

6:58 AM
Blogger Miller said...

I am shocked/stoked that these guys are coming in a for a visit. Tubs regime never would have even called those players, much less gone after them aggressively. Luper is quickly becoming a favorite!

Regardless of whether he can get in school, a commit from a player/QB rated as high as Rollison will make other top rated commits think and will entice skill players. Even if he turns out to be a sign and place, that is a risk that should be taken for exposure purposes. And heck, if he does get in? GReat!

So where does the official visitor list stand now?

It occurred to me this morning that Chizik's hiring choices indicate something. Notice that he isn't pulling a lot of coaches from his Iowa State staff. That says to me that he didn't have the bucks to hire who he wanted at Iowa State, so that is further evidence of the reason for his record as a head coach. If you can't get the assistants you want, an overwhelming change isn't going to happen.

ISU stated that Chizik's asst coaching staff was 3rd highest paid in the conference. Now, Big12 salary standards are probably lower than SEC standards. I think it is more likely that no one wanted to go to Ames, Iowa to coach for a poor program.
At AU, he has a solid program, a better product to sell to prospects and prospective coaches. It would be easier to recruit top coaches and players to AU than to Ames. IMO.

Michael:
The series follows the turbulent lives of Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), the nation's most revered and reviled high-stakes litigator and her bright, ambitious young protégé Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne).

After her unprecedented victory over billionaire Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson), Patty Hewes has the legal world at her feet. Just as she's pondering her next move, Daniel Purcell (William Hurt), a man from Patty's mysterious past, storms back into her life, catapulting Patty into a new legal challenge. What starts as a domestic murder case, escalates into the highest reaches of government as Patty unearths a vast conspiracy.
At the same time, Ellen is on a mission to take down Patty. She's agreed to act as an informant for the FBI, assisting them in their criminal investigation of Patty and the firm. As Patty unravels the mystery surrounding Daniel Purcell, she must also negotiate the perilous minefield both inside and outside her office.

Muschamp vs Malzahn was a bloodbath in Malzahn's favor (although who knows how much Malzahn had to do with that offense)

Muschamp stopped it the next year after Malzahn left.

If history is the measurement, then gameplan should be squared away. I saw first hand the other night how CGM executed an offensive gameplan and it was nothing nice for Ball State. He has always shown creativity. I still talk about the hide the little guy play he ran against us in 2005. Defense should be solid as well. We just need some more studs.

Mon,

I'm not a downer, just a realist.

Whatever! I am excited to see the coaching staff at least try to get some exciting/hyped athletes as opposed to the Tubs way*.

*Tubs way=give up on the elite and hope for the best with what you get after 2004. And beat Bama often and live off that.

Ok Sensi,

All of us are realist.... we can't win if we don't get the guys on campus...

We know we have to coach them up.... I feel this Staff can do that so I'm leaning on the Glass Half Full not Half Empty...

We have time enough in the fall to be critical, but right now let's be positive about the posibilities...

We can only go forward from the 2008 debacle!

This got lost in the shuffle this morning, so I'm reposting. I know I'll get an honest answer from Monica:

Good morning, Hotties! I was glancing over the previous posts and "sidewalk fan" was mentioned a couple of times. What do you consider a sidewalk fan?

10:15 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

miztertommyd, I think we will find some fullbacks regardless. One of them may end up being named Ben Tate.

10:16 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

As far as the staff goes, are they not all proven teachers at their particular disciplines? Time will tell on how good a head coach Chizik is, but he IS a proven DC, Malzahn a proven OC, and the position coaches decidedly all know their gig.

The question may be how quick can the team that's going through its 3rd change (or is it 4th change) in as many years can pick up on what the staff wants them to do.

sidewalk fan = fan who didn't actually attend or graduate from the school? I'm guessing here. Can anyone help Luv out?

10:22 AM
Blogger AUnMobilz (CAM-"Da Man") said...

LuvAU1968,
I think the "sidewalk fan" is a term the kinda mimics a person that stands on the side and cheers with others only when times are good and criticizes with others when things they are bad, but never gets in the game with an original thought for themselves....

If anyone has a better opinion please give it up!

10:22 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Mr. S- From earlier. I do not see Stoops career in any sort of jeapordy, but I do see Oklahoma being on the short side between 3 equal teams at the end. If it wasn't for the Big 12 being over-rated right now, USC would be in that game in my opinion.

10:27 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

so Mon, the big question is, who did Ellen shoot twice at the end of the show????

10:29 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

From what I've heard/read sidewalk fans are those fans that didn't attend the school.

10:30 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I wouldn't get all excited about the stars of the players being recruited. We had top 10 classes in 2006 and 2007, but how good they turn out to be is TBD.

I am more interested in seeing what the Chiz can do with our current talent. I hope that we don't see a lot of new recruits play this next season. I view recruits as at least a season away from making a meaningful contribution.

What I am most interested in is what happens with the quarterbacks and receivers during the spring.

TarHeel and mrtommyd, so if that's your definition, how do you feel about sidewalk fans?

10:35 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for the sidewalk fan thing, it doesn't really matter to me how you define it. I did not graduate from Auburn, although I have do go to Auburn games. I have been a fan longer than some of you have been alive. I follow Auburn more closely than most people, including those that graduated from Auburn. To me, sidewalk fan is pretty much meaningless. I wouldn't consider it the same as being a fair weather fan. I also have heard it defined as someone who hasn't played football.

10:35 AM
Blogger Miller said...

Sidewalk fans is a description typically given to fans who have no ties to the school they cheer for (I.e. they did not attend the school and don't have other ties such as family who attended). AUnMoblz description is also part of the sidewalk faction.

Most bammers are sidewalk fans, many of them have never even set foot on the campus.

In the spirit of full disclosure, some might consider me a sidewalk fan, as I did not attend AU. I got more money to go to Mercer. But, my uncle went to AU, my wife is in grad school there now, and my sister starts AU in the fall. I've also been coming to AU for games since I was a child.

10:36 AM
Blogger AUnMobilz (CAM-"Da Man") said...

I agree with mrtommyd also,
just that what i said was what "sidewalk fans" do all the time was my description....

I guess that makes me one cuz i went to Tuskegee.

But I do love me some AU!!

10:36 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I love Auburn fans period. Unless they puke on me, then I don't like them so much.

10:36 AM
Blogger AUnMobilz (CAM-"Da Man") said...

OK let's just get all the wrapped up in a nice little bow and settle it!!!

We are all H.A.B.O.T.N. Fans....PERIOD!!!

10:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The bottom line is that sidewalk fan is not derogatory and pretty much meaningless. Just because someone decides to assign a label to you doesn't change who you are. I have a problem with fair weather fans, but not sidewalk fans.

10:38 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I didn't like the fans that used to smoke on the concourse/sidewalk right behind our seats. I really really hate smoke, unless it's coming from open pit bbq

10:39 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Sensi - Perception is reality and what you perceive is subjective. So don't call yourself a realist as if it's some final stamp of truth and someone like me who choses to be excited is out of touch with reality.

Luv - Sidewalk fan - I think some people call anyone who isn't an alum a sidewalk fan. I don't like the term. I used it the other day because some bamer said "give us a product we can support and we will". He was saying if the team is no good we won't support. I support the team even when we suck.

Scottie - I don't know! I love how dark Ellen has become. Thinking it's Patty is too obvious, right? Maybe it's Frobisher?

10:39 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

That settles it. I'm going to get me some NC BBQ for lunch.

10:41 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Unless of course you're an Alabama sidewalk fan. Then it's definitely derogatory. Florida sidewalk fans, too. I'll put UGA sidewalkers in there too.

Is there such a thing as a Vandy sidewalk fan?

I would argue that anyone that would get any Auburn game on pay per view regardless of the opponent or the teams record is not a sidewalk fan. He may be a nut, but he ain't no sidewalk fan.

The only distinctions I've ever made concerning fans is that fans (short for fanatics) tend to be for or against based on success. Supporters tend to support the team(s), athletic department, Universtiy regardless and they tend to be Alums. I'd say that I'm both.

Don't you find that fans that haven't attended or are alums are the ones with the most gear? What they didn't spend in tuition is in their den or their RV.

(OK Michael no athletic supporter comments)
