Thursday chatter

THURSDAY NOONISH
Post No. 1,012

Hey everyone. It's been a busy "off" day for me so for and it promises to be less relaxing as we move forward.

I'm 99% sure I'll have some fresh Gene Chizik material for you tonight. He's schedule to be around Montgomery tonight and The HABOTN is aiming to intercept him for some conversation.

If you had a question for Chizik right now, what would it be?

I'll be back in a bit for a more traditional update.

My question suggestions:

1. "Coach, with 10 seconds to go against UAT and we're up 48-0, would you run or pass on the two-point conversion?"

2. I guess it would run something along the lines of this: "You have expanded the geography of Auburn recruiting. Is this something that will continue, or is it a one-year decision due to your staff's background, and, if it is permanent, does this mean that Auburn is surrendering any ground in state?"

Let me take Mr. Randle on tour of the state government complex ...

Ah, here is the Finance Department, where the state pays its bill. Lookie here, here's $100,000 in cash lyin' around.

This is the Department of Education, where bureaucrats monitor the academic performance of thousands of students each day. Meet Myron, he'll be taking care of your academics for you. Congratulations on your upcoming degree in molecular biology. All Myron wants is a photo the two of you together. It can be Photoshopped if necessary.

Coach, Auburn has had its head handed to them on a plate by the evil empire on in-state players the last two seasons. Is this a result of laziness by the previous staff, or is there some funny business going on? Thanks for the hard work you and your staff have put into recruiting thus far.

Kathy,
What's this you mentioned about Brown? What's the latest on that?

1:04 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Here's how you qualify for the tour:

First, we take your height and weight and log it in our database.

Then, we line you up 40 yards away from where the tour begins.

We say go, if you don't get there fast enough according to your height/weight/position, you don't get on the tour.

We do make some allowances for potential tourees who do express an extraordinary amount of hate for UAT.

1) What was the name of the duck that was killed in the oil spill?

Or ask him if he can sing the Fraggle Rock theme song.

Kathy, remember that you are looking at a recruiting website, they do not know how interested a prospect really is. Often they haven't even been updated to what a player has said.

Speaking of Quentin, I wonder if he has any interest in coaching? Of course if you get to fly around and help interview the HC candidates maybe being an assistant is not appealing. I'm sorry. I will only wear Navy from now on. Maybe a navy and orange stripe, but never solid orange again.

Now on to the questions:

1. Mr. Coach Gene Chizik sir, did you really shoot a man in Tuscon just to watch him die?

2. A follow up Mr. Coach Gene Chizik sir, why wasn't that man Nick Satan?

3. What are your thoughts on Kicker on a Stick? Would you mind signing this petition for said Kicker on a Stick?

For whatever reason, Alabama seems to have Kelly a couple of spots down on their wish list. I don't necessarily agree with it because I think he is very good....and is an in state kid. To me if it is close, always go with the in-state kid.

However, Auburn needs playmakers in a bad way. I think he'd fit in well down there.

He's a very good kid from what I have heard.

Dabo does an excellent job up this way, so don't be shocked if he spurns a last minute Alabama push (if they don't get their #1 or #2 choice) for Clemson.

I am one to believe that the Auburn uniform is sacrosanct. That's why I hate the alternate orange in basketball. I am ambivalent about the fans wearing orange -- though I prefer blue.

However, our uniform is our DNA, our fingerprint. I don't care about face mask colors, or names on back, or shoe colors. But the uniform itself, it's beyond special. And it is beautiful.

We didn't wear orange jerseys for the 0-42 Tennessee game. (we did pelt them with oranges as they came out of the tunnel - then they pelted us)
We wore them for the '78 UGA game - tie. The '79 homecoming game against Mrs. State - a win, and the '80 UGA game - a loss.

The 78 game was the first game we wore orange since '55, so we must've had orange jerseys back then too.

Aubie, I think we actually wore orange jerseys and blue pants some in the early 1950s.

Then God, who was very displeased, told Noah to build an ark, gather animals by two, and get them into the ark. Then He flooded the earth, and told us to never, ever do that again unless we wanted to be punished. Hence the Barfield era.

I think we should go back to the blue helmets too.

The full story on the orange jerseys is in David Housels book - Football Vault the Story of Auburn Football, page 89.

There is also a related story about a drunk delusional college student who was carted out of the UT game screaming BALLIN! and NO ORANGE!

All Bama fans in support of orange jerseys should talk to Mal Moore. I"m sure he could talk Nicky into wearing them.

faker, you just said you liked Auburns uniforms they way they were. I know you're a confused man which is evidenced by you constantly frequenting Auburn message boards, but c'mon....orange jerseys?

UNCLE.

You are right.

Needless to say I hate orange jerseys. Before long we would be like Oregon.

You people are fuddy-duddies (first time that word has been used in 37 years).
Live a little. go skydiving. shoot the rapids. run naked through a meadow at dawn. make love in a hammock. wear orange jerseys on homecoming.

I am told I was at the game. I am told my father had a heart attack after the game.

I remember none, apparently because that day brain magnetically erased to remove any memories of that day.

So I am told.

Next thing you'll want to change the stripes to blue and white and make the field red on the Star Spangled Banner.

You'll want baseball players to run to third base instead of first.

You'll want to have on the presidential/vice presidential ballot a man of mixed racial heritage on one ticket and a woman on the other.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

No thanks, faker, Omnica is way more devoted to her servents than I could ever be.

I say let's go throwback. I'm talking early '50's throwback. Blue helmets, orange jerseys. None of this half-a$$ed grey face mask, no logo crap. How lazy was that?

Can you imagine that conversation? Hey, let's go throwback for homecoming. Uh, it's less than a week away. I know, we'll peel of the helmet stickers, screw on some grey facemasks, wear our white jerseys and tell people it's our throwback unis! They'll never fall for that!

Another question.

Stability on the coaching staff has been an issue at Auburn for a long time. Sometimes it seems like we change coordinators more frequently that most people change their oil. What do you think can be done to ensure stability of your coaching staff?

4:18 PM
Blogger michael said...

Chizik's answer would be, "We plan on changing coaches every 5,000 miles"

Not trying to scoop Jay, but on Goldbergs blog he has a salary list for the assistant coaches. MUCH less than had been widely reported. I had seen $400,000 for Trooper and Luper-not true. Malzahn was "only" $350,000.

-And major ups to you Jay for given us a chance to ask the coach...Nice recruiting work too man...How's it going at the Advitiser right now?..I remember it was getting a little tense..

Question-I haven't heard anything about his contract? Has it been finalized?

Has he been to an AU b'balls game and what does he think of our chance of getting to the dance?

To you older guys, aren't Auburn's official colors "burnt orange" and "navy blue?" If you do a google search thats what most sites say, and the coloring on this link is also more of a burnt orange:

http://www.auburn.edu/administration/trademark/logos.pdf

Anyhow, I can't stand that fluorescent construction worker orange that Under Armour has propagated around here. Personally, it especially bothers me watching a road game on TV when the trim on the jersey sleeves and sides of the pants almost look to be glowing. It's like something a runner wears at night to not get hit by a car.

On that note, I think an actual "burt orange" jersey would look great, especially with the navy trim. I'm talking like Texas's shade:

http://i.cnn.net/si/multimedia/photo_gallery/0706/campus.bestuniforms/images/OKLAHOMA-ST-TEXAS-FOOTBALL.jpg

Not that bright orange Tennessee/Florida hybrid nonsense like in my avatar picture.

6:32 PM

Aubie, that surprised me as well. Obviously Chizik thought it was important to bring Roof in to AU. I never would have thought Roof would make more than Malzahn. And where did that widely quoted salary of $400,000 for Trooper and Luper come from? I saw that number a few times.

Defensive line coach Tracy Rocker - $300,000
Offensive line coach Jeff Grimes - $290,000
