Willis leaves the program

How about that? I've now officially seen it all.

Assistant coach James Willis is leaving Auburn to coach at Alabama.

Here's what Willis had to say via a statement issued from UA:

"I'm excited about the opportunity to come and work with Coach Saban at the University of Alabama," Willis said in the statement. "He is one of the best defensive coaches in the game and this is a chance to gain some great experience and learn from the best. You don't get many chances like that in the coaching business. When you combine that opportunity with the history and tradition at Alabama, it was a decision that was best for me personally as well as professionally. I know my wife and the kids are as excited as I am to join Coach Saban's staff."

IF YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS: ... good luck. I will say that James was shocked by being in limbo during the post-Tuberville period. I dismissed his shock as an acting job at the time. I'm not so sure now. I talked with him Sunday night and he didn't seem agitated. We even talked about the transition from Tuberville to Chizik. While he didn't seem particularly thrilled by (allegedly) not knowing what was happening during those first few days of Chizik's tenure, I never sensed that he was bitter. There is talk that his post-Tuberville severance package was an issue.

Willis isn't returning calls right now.

Blogger michael said...

OK, I definitely didn't read all the comments so what I say may have already been beaten to death. But this guy played for Auburn, and eventually started coaching at Auburn, and then he goes above and beyond after his job is put in limbo and continues to work hard for us because he wants the job so bad, expects to stay here because we know he told a recruit as much, and then he gets fired. Sure, we ended up hiring him back, but how can you call him the traitor when he has already been fired once by the program he has put so much into?

If I tell my girlfriend she is inadequate and dump her, but then get back together with her a week later, is it that crazy for her to dump me a month later? How could I feel wronged at that point?

Also, he is a linebackers coach. Not a head coach. Not a coordinator. He is the linebackers coach. Sorry if the sky is not falling for me.

If this was about the severance package, generally speaking, coaches get damages for being let go. When those damages are mitigated by finding other jobs, the damages owed get reduced. If I'm not mistaken, Tubs had a clause in his contract that specifically stated that his buyout damages could not be mitigated if he were to take another job. I'd be very surprised if Willis had the same language in his contract. So if he expected 100% of his severance package, he should have stayed fired.

9:19 PM

The more I have thought about it, the more accepting of Darth Willis' decision I have become. I still want him to fail miserably...at Bama. From there on all the success in the world to him and his family as long as he never shows his face at Auburn again unless he is on the other sideline. Sadly, I think if he learned anything being a part of xCTT's staff, it was that loyalty in the coaching profession is a weakness. Who would think the biggest fault of xCTT was his loyalty. Loyalty cost us two years with Noel Mazzone. Loyalty brought us Nallsminger. Loyalty brought us a 5-7 2008 because the old-timers couldn't/wouldn't buy into the forward pass. Loyalty got him fired when he would not fire most of them. $aban certainly has no loyalty to any god, man or program...we'll maybe Mrs. Saban, but you get the point.

We may all need to close our eyes and step into the darkness ourselves if we want to look the devil in the eye and make him blink.

g'nite. WDE

Well, after letting the James Willis move set in last night, I am still shocked by it. I would be interested to hear Joe Whitt Sr's thoughts on this move. I have a feeling that James may have worn out his welcome at Auburn for any future employement. It is one thing to leave and it is a whole different thing to go to bama and then spew the bama tradition bs in his statement release. Hope we beat their butts next year.

Anyone else see that post from Kim in the Bunker? She linked to July 2008 post on tideinsider.com that said James Willis will be hired at Bama in Jan. 2009. That's sorta fun. I love a good conspiracy dontcha know.

Other questions:
So Petey says he's done with Auburn and headed to bama, but has bama actually offered him?

Is Randle really done with bama?

(This is all said in my best "soap opera/stay tuned till next week" voice)

I'm not sure I understand all the angst and ill will.

From a professional view, if I were in his shoes I might do the same. Staying on staff at AU in three years isn't exactly promising.

As much as that hurts me to say.

WDE!

The anger has waned, but I still think Saban is an evil, greedy, cutthroat s.o.b. and that JW is a greedy traitor.

So now we need a DB coach and a LB coach. Does anyone know who AU might be going after?

The Willis situation just further confirms my feelings about what college football has become. The coaches, for the most part, are simply mercenaries; the players, for the most part, are mercenaries. Everything is about money, and money is all that matters.

I remember Tubs saying soon after he was hired that it was "just a business." I remember thinking that if its just a business, then why should I care about it?

I lobbied hard to get Pat Sullivan as our coach when Tubs was hired; Pat never looked at AU football as just a business. Of course, few people paid any attention to me because it is a business to most.

Nothing personal, James, but I hope you fail miserably. Its just a business, and you now work for a competitor.

Forget him. Time to move on. Let Roof coach the LBs and then we get a bad @$$ secondary coach. Then we go on out on 11-28-09 and let willis get the hell beat out of him. This Saban will work his ass to death and he will never get to see his family again.

WOW. Just wow. I get to work this morning after listening to Auburn squander a terrific chance at beating UK last night, and then find out the Willis defected.

This must be what Castro feels like when Cubans come to America. I gotta say, it's hurtful. (NOTE: I am in no way implying that Auburn is like Cuba.)

In the end, I don't think this hurts us that badly. He is still just a LB coach and that had something left to be desired, as evidenced by Tray Blackmon's inability to cover anyone on a pass play. However, this does beg the question of why? If its about money, I get it. I have no qualms with anyone who wants to make more money, as that is what a free market economy is based on. However, if it is about ego, then I'm mad. Something tells me it's a little of both.

Either way, Coach Willis, you are still a Tiger. You did play at AU and coach there for a long time. Just don't be surprised when no one wants to have you at their tailgate. And don't get mad when the student section pelts you with insults next year at JHS.

Enjoy your new life with Napoleon II. May November 28, 2009 be your Waterloo.

Good Morning Hot Ones!

Well said Coosa!

I wonder what it's like in that moment when you realize you've have given your blood, sweat, and tears to something then reality hits that it's just a business? It must be crushing!

Well as Coosa said our business is Auburn Football so lets get to work. I like the focus on these JUCO players. I hope we get Paige.

Petey Smith and bama are made for each other. Why would it take Willis switching to bama for him to suddenly decide he has a clear leader? Why didn't he have a clear leader when CJW was at AU?

All the more reason to bring that Tana Train into the AU station. Whoot Whoot!

I have to think this was in the works for a while. There has been chatter involving T. Coleman and P. Smith for a week or so. Jay G, you mentioned that the AU folks were backing off Smith a little and Coleman began crawfishing on his commit as well. I think the staff and the recruits knew what was going on.

Hey Gnome, there is a quick solution if you don't like the noise coming out of that radio. Shut the idiots off.

Mornin' Hotties.

Mon- someone knew in July 2008 that Willis would be a bammer this month? That's scary.

Ballin'- I'm off today and I don't plan on seeing the world, so watch out ;-)

I am better today...Willis is dead to me.

Look Coaches today are scum. I hate that I am old school on your word and loyalty, but thats not todays world in any sector of business and college football is a business, a big one.

The kids as recruits should take a class that states all coaches recruiting you would lie and rob their mother if it meant more money.

I watched a terrible but funny movie the other night, a classic. Johnny B. Goode, with Anthony Michael Hall as the star qb. I know, right.

Anyway, remember the scene where all the recruiters are outside his house. They are fighting, offering to shave their heads, girls, money, Hell even Ole Tex (texas) bought grandpas wall eyed gibblers(fishing lures).lol.

So yea, its all a nasty business.

Petey Smith-Here is my summary of the kid. You have four types of recruits.

The ones who had a great junior season and pretty much lack off their senior season due to scare of injury or just lack of surrounding talent.

Then you have the ones you come out of no where there senior year and all of the sudden get offers at the last minute.

Third you have what I call campers. There are so many camps at colleges now that coaches watch a kid for a week, see something they like and offer him then and there scared he might be seen or discovered by other schools.

Fourth you have what I call fringe guys. These guys have always been around. Usually good athletes. but some reason or another big time schools are scared away, due to size, injury, grades, etc. These guys either disappear to working at the grocery store, prep school, or someone takes a chance on them.

Petey Smith is the first type, he had a great junior year on a stacked high school team. So he is basically on his accolades from last year. He is a good athlete, but no game changer. He needs to back off the after school Burger King runs.

Memphis?? hmmm...Maybe Chizik stopped by his agent Jimmy Sexton's house to see how he could get AU to give him a raise if he took over CJW duties. Now that would just take our roadshow over the top!
