Willis leaves the program
How about that? I've now officially seen it all.
Assistant coach James Willis is leaving Auburn to coach at Alabama.
Here's what Willis had to say via a statement issued from UA:
"I'm excited about the opportunity to come and work with Coach Saban at the University of Alabama," Willis said in the statement. "He is one of the best defensive coaches in the game and this is a chance to gain some great experience and learn from the best. You don't get many chances like that in the coaching business. When you combine that opportunity with the history and tradition at Alabama, it was a decision that was best for me personally as well as professionally. I know my wife and the kids are as excited as I am to join Coach Saban's staff."
IF YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS: ... good luck. I will say that James was shocked by being in limbo during the post-Tuberville period. I dismissed his shock as an acting job at the time. I'm not so sure now. I talked with him Sunday night and he didn't seem agitated. We even talked about the transition from Tuberville to Chizik. While he didn't seem particularly thrilled by (allegedly) not knowing what was happening during those first few days of Chizik's tenure, I never sensed that he was bitter. There is talk that his post-Tuberville severance package was an issue.
Willis isn't returning calls right now.

Article sent BigCat and WTC
wow Def Leppard reference...
It's not like I need another reason to Hate Bama, but, hey, I'm like the squirrel storing away the acorns.
I've got several winters of Hate stored up for UAT
How long do are you going to keep that Rove avatar?
OK, I definitely didn't read all the comments so what I say may have already been beaten to death. But this guy played for Auburn, and eventually started coaching at Auburn, and then he goes above and beyond after his job is put in limbo and continues to work hard for us because he wants the job so bad, expects to stay here because we know he told a recruit as much, and then he gets fired. Sure, we ended up hiring him back, but how can you call him the traitor when he has already been fired once by the program he has put so much into?
If I tell my girlfriend she is inadequate and dump her, but then get back together with her a week later, is it that crazy for her to dump me a month later? How could I feel wronged at that point?
Also, he is a linebackers coach. Not a head coach. Not a coordinator. He is the linebackers coach. Sorry if the sky is not falling for me.
Until Turbo Prop brings back the camera from DC tonight ... then I can take the photo of my Rove Teddy Bear with the HABOTN shirt on.
Thanks Monica. E-mail sent.
Before we totally wuss out and join the Sun Belt, I'd like to believe Auburn still has a chance to make a stand and do something that is meaningful on the football field.
But I'm not sure. Some of you got any ideas?
You not a fan of The Brain, Monica?
Def Leppard...
Did somebody say Def Leppard?
DL
Sorry -- I had to go work on my hair for a little while.
Excellence takes patience.
AU up 23-22 with 7:25 to go to the half. Out rebounded badly, out shot from 3 land badly. Few turnovers ahve kept them in the game.
Mchieal, you could feel wronged because you assumed she had forgiven you when she took you back.
Your analogy also left out that she dumped you to marry your best friend.
Thanks for the Utah Utes theme song from this year, FSJ.
I watched Bill Walker, Patrick Patterson and OJ Mayo play basketball together for Huntington High about 3 years ago. All three on the same court. It was quite a show.
Petey Smith is headed to UA, canceled his official visit this weekend.
newbie here. Well this has gotten interesting.
Is "Associate Head Coach" the equivalent of Assistant to the Manager at Dunder-Mifflin?
Although I guess technically you should say dumped you for the dude that kicked your butt earlier in the year.
Thanks for the score updates, wtc. I do not get FSS here in the hotel, unfortunately.
Oooo, I want to play the analogy game again! Let me think for a second on how to incorporate Big Sexy into this...
Email sent, Kathy.
I'm not crying ... I'm not giving up ... I'm just saying "James, pack up your stuff, walk to your position players and tell 'em what you're doing and leave. We'll see you in November."
And tell your LBs to watch their patellas ... just kidding.
michael...
leave me out of your analogy..
Petey Smith. Petey.
Have fun wearing the color of sin.
Welcome, Phooey and that was funny. I love an Office reference.
Tar are you excited? Damages is on tonight!!!
Jet - Not a fan.
Jet..
I am a fan...
Good stuff.
12 turnovers for Kentucky
AU 31
UK 28
Tenntiger, I have a link for the computer you at least keep up with the game.
http://all-access.cbssports.com/player.html?code=aub&media=95986
Click on open game tracker. It is animated but you can keep up woth the game and you might be able to listen. I have the sound off as I have watch Lost at the same time.
Ummmmmm...wtf? I don't keep up for a few days and now craziness is happening allover again?!? I guess just another hurdle and a chance to get another big 12 asst coach.
DoWhat it looks like AU pulled our offer to Petey Smith. Now that's interesting
Fan of the Brain? You mean Bobby "The Brain" Heenan? No one's a fan of that shmuck!
So Willis leaving is like Big Sexy pouring syrup in my pants and taking a job at Huddle House
Gnome - hee hee @ Utes/Def Leppard post.
Nice.
Wow what if we get another Big 12 coach?
Rove personifies the term "evil genius." Emphasis on the evil part.
By the way, if AU beats Kentucky in Rupp, I will personally roll Toomers' naked.
Question. You are in the grocery store. You are not wearing any clothes that identify you as an Auburn fan. Someone rounds the bend wearing a Bammer sweatshirt. Auburn has just beaten Bammer for the first time in like six or seven years. Do you feel compelled to give the guy a War Eagle (without making eye contact, of course) and start snickering?
Gnome do you have a webcam?
Big Cat...
Looks like he is about to commit to Alabama from what I gather on Tiderinsider.
The Gnome of the Unknown will become quite known if we beat Kentucky
I think you see Joe Sr., or Lolley as a one-year stop gap. And that's fine. Both are good football men, plugged into the HS communities, and ready to roll.
War Eagle with hard core eye contact and smarmy grin.
tennessee tiger, is the bama fan wearing pants in your hypothetical situation? Or just the sweatshirt?
Who was recruiting Petey Smith?
Don't forget that Joe whitt actually knows how to coach linebackers and make them mean as hell jet
Willis, not so much.
I will provide a pic as evidence tomorrow if it happens, Monica.
Text from Turbo Prop, on board a bus coming home from D.C. ...
"So in the 8th Circle of Hell, Eric Ramsey and James Willis sit playing patty cake."
I'm so proud.
You raised him well Jet!
bendict arnold got his in the end, didnt he?
Come On AU bball!! We can log on to AU's website and watch Gnome roll Toomer's naked until the cops come.
I think in the 9th circle, Nick Saban is getting his back waxed for all of eternity.
WE need Eric Smith to run thru petey next year and laugh at him
Right on Alan. Linebackers have been solid but unspectacular. I was never sure if it was Willis, the DC, or the talent.
The real Benedict Arnold lived a full life until his death at an old age in England, Tim. And there is still a statue of him honoring him in America (though without his name on it)
Wearing pants, Michael. And shoes, and socks, and a t-shirt under the sweatshirt. And he has all his teeth. So as you may have surmised by now, the guys in the sweatshirt is either actually me (wearing an AU sweatshirt) or FSJ (the only Bammer who would ever be fully clothed and in possession of a full set of teeth.
This has got to be the weirdest football season/post season ever
Gnome - GO TIGERS!!!
back waxing - nice
Can Eric Smith run through the air without getting knocked down?
UK by 1 at half.
34-33 at the half. UK up. UK has 14 turnovers to AU's 5.
BigCat ... about the only thing that would top it is for either Muschamp or Petrino to resign their jobs to join Chizik's staff.
Can Eric Smith run through the air without fumbling?
I love condescending announcers who call us "scrappy". Maybe they'll say we're precious next.
Yea Jet that would jus seal the deal and confirm that the end of days is near.
Don't worry, Monica. There's a reason they work for Raycom.
Monica ... some others descripters ...
"Cute"
"Make their own uniforms"
"Have good personalities"
"All the other teams like them"
"Share well, especially after missing free throws."
Well goodnight folks. I've had enough for one day. I wish the actual season had been half this entertaining.
Can't wait for Jay G. Tate to tell us the real story about the former Auburn LB coach.
Goodnight, BigCat. Sweet Dreams.
LOL@ Make their own uni's.
I have to share this one more beaut from Turbo Prop ...
"You can never hate them enough ... they are the serpent from Genesis ... the mob that called for Barabbas ... the dudes that married their moms in First Corinthians."
I have created a monster.
I'm watching Lost. Been waiting for these two hours since May.
If you waiting for "details" on Willis' departure, well, I'd suggest you dilute your expectations.
He can when Coach Luper gets finished putting him through ball drop drills!!
They should of just let his ass stay fired.
What I am really interested in is hearing what some of the current LB's have to say about Willis flaking out. Anyone seen any comments from Bynes, Stevens, Eltoro, etc???
Jay, too much time travel tonight. The end was the best part though.
I certainly hope so DoWhat? He'd be a force to be reckoned with then.
Consider the expectations diluted Mr Tate
I don't care why he crossed over. He did it.
Nuff said.
Next.
Think 4* DT Pilson is still solid.
He said Willis' departure had no affect on his commitment.
2 3s by Meeks to open second half ... AU is toast.
I read LB Harris Gaston is still solid, said he committed to Auburn not Willis. Good News there.
Now here is the big question. Does CJW now make a run at the 2* QB that just committed to AU. Would be interesting to see the UA fans back pedal and say but wait he is Mr. Football!
Heard on Sports Call the other day. CJW was the one that had been so high on Moseley from the get go.
What are Gaston's other options? Faulkner?
I thought Willis was recruiting Cotton.
Auburn is shooting VERY poorly tonight... VERY!
Auburn is playing pretty doggone well at Kentucky ...
Looks like Meeks is beginning to assert himself.
I think Cotton has been a collaborative recruiting effort.
Ensminger was the point guy initially.
Well said, Phred.
Is Faulkner even playing anymore, Barkley? I heard they canned their coach and haven't hired another.
If this was about the severance package, generally speaking, coaches get damages for being let go. When those damages are mitigated by finding other jobs, the damages owed get reduced. If I'm not mistaken, Tubs had a clause in his contract that specifically stated that his buyout damages could not be mitigated if he were to take another job. I'd be very surprised if Willis had the same language in his contract. So if he expected 100% of his severance package, he should have stayed fired.
AU may be playing well... on D... but they are shooting 38% fromt he field, 30% from beyond the arc and only 25% from the line... that is poor by any standards.
It would seem we should wear our dark unis on the road as it will not show as much when we inevitably wet ourselves.
Well, that was sort of my point. I don't think Gaston has many other options.
It's amazing how Moseley's stock has risen since Auburn offered.
Lucas Hargrove ... When the Possession Absolutely Has to End
astateguy, if Mosley had committed to Alabama, he'd have a couple more stars from (Bama)Rivals.
Back down to 2 with 12:20 left ... 46-44 UK
For the person who asked earlier, the Raycom Wednesday game is always aired at midnight in Chattanooga. They never air it live.
Plus I thought SC/Florida was the Raycom game tonight anyway.
Mon... is that THE Sharon Stone that you're friends with on FB? If so, color me impressed... and extremely impressionable....
Folks having a hard time finding radio coverage for AU at UK can use this: mms://wm1.alaweb.com/WAAO
(I tried to post it as a clickable link but MMS references in HTML are apparently disallowed. You'll need to make a link of it yourself.)
This works with Windows Media Player and should work with others (RealPlayer, possibly QuickTime) as well.
tie game 10:19 to go 46-all ... Reed dunks it
ha! They said scrappy again. This would make a good drinking game.
I'm trying to get the yahoo video to work, but I guess that isn't going to happen.
OMG ... we're in the lead.
playing defense like maniacs.
Finally the yahoo video is working.
If we could ever get some quality size on this team, we might be good.
Miller - Yes, that is THE Sharon Hall Stone of Brewton, AL. :-)
TinyURL to the rescue!
Click here for the AU at UK radio broadcast.
defense playing well... if we were making a decent % of our shots rather than shooting at less than 40% we'd be blowing them out...
Wow, KY is 82-17 against Auburn all time going into this game.
WE can't score inside, period. So we bomb away.
... and then it's over.
That's probably the game, because we can't get anything inside.
We can't get the ball past the FT line.
Hopefully this is Lebo's final trip around the SEC.
We've spent a ton on football in the past few weeks ... I don't see us making a basketball change right now.
wouldn't bother me if he didn't even make it all the way around...
Then we'll always be a small team with bad fundamentals playing before a 2/3's empty brand new building.
If "severance package" is the issue that separated Willis from AU, then that rises an interesting question about "consistency", with regards to AU's publicly stated handling of AU's handling of Tuberville's departure don't ya think?
JABA.
We have shot 4 FTs and made 1.
UK has shot 20 FTs and made 17 of them.
AU is shooting 35% from the floor.
UK is shooting 50% from the floor.
AU has made 8-23 3's (35%)
UK has made 5-13 from 3 (38%)
other than Vot Barber who is not a banger on the inside, tell me wh Lebo has recruited in 5 years that has shown to be a solid POWER Forward or Center?
He doesn't seem to get the inside guys. It definitely is hurting us this year. We have a solid perimeter but can take control inside.
If we do not go to post season this year, how can his boss justify keeping Lebo?
And the new arena should not be the reason. It will not fill up, if we go into next year with another losing team...
When I say "right now" I mean this year ... of course, if the weeks come completely off ... then that could change it ... but I imagine they would like to avoid a change this year
You know what's funny, is that Willis is actually a downgrade for Bama compared to Thompson.
Thompson has proven to be a better recruiter and position coach.
Now we just have to get someone good.
Jet, if Willis is on the sideline, could Turbo Prop stab him AND Saban with the drumstick? Tell him thanks in advance from the AU faithful.
Who will we get for DB and LB? Will we raid a big time team or settle for some no name? I'm a bit worried about it.
My sense is that he is so lathered up right now, Depressed, that his scrappy 130 pound self could pick up Willis and stick him through Saban's skull and save the sticks.
how about some shot selection....sheesh... we have taken twice as many shots as UK... if they'd take better shots they might shoot better than 38%... pathetic...
OH, but we did hit another FT! 2 out of 6 they are on fire from the stripe!
Mon.
Totally agree with you..... he left.... he gone.....enuff said....
They always told you to get them back in the game on the field.... see you late November at Jordan Hare Stadium coach willis!
Let's move on!!!
Anybody got any names for replacements? I've gotten past the fuming mad phase that I was in earlier... now I'm actually excited to get to hire a better coach...
Dwayne Reed. Terrible.
One good play. Six terrible plays. One good play. Eight terrible plays. Continue cycle.
Later ... hotties.
watchu talkin bout willis
I'm reading all these comments elsewhere of AU fans saying how proud they are of the team for not getting beat too badly.
HOGWASH! I don't subscribe the that thought process.
Jay, maybe you should check with the dark lord first in regard to JW. He may no longer be allowed to talk on the phone. One voice and everything.
If we're in the market for a LB coach, I say we use the same criteria that Chizzle has used in his coaching searches thus far. I like the way Chiz goes after the coaches he wants on his staff and I feel very confident that the open spot left by whatchoo talkin' 'bout will be filled by a top notch coach as well.
Monica- if you're still here, I've been bustin my butt at work. I love when work prevents me from watching Damnages
We should go get Shane Beamer. He has been at SouCar the last two years, both of which they have led the SEC in passing defense. Plus he has some commits.
*good commits.
They were also top 5 nationally in pass D the last two years. Not that Shane is the sole contributor to that, but I think we should get him.
everybody at a post-bb game campfire?
Kathy, Bama got Oliver from us in the early 70s. Oliver was coming home.
Did my comment saying we should go get Shane Beamer from South Carolina get deleted? Was that offensive?
Nope, it's still there.
Apparently Ramsey isn't going to attempt to play football again, although with the latest surgery, he should go through wife without pain. Good for him.
What a Joke
The more I have thought about it, the more accepting of Darth Willis' decision I have become. I still want him to fail miserably...at Bama. From there on all the success in the world to him and his family as long as he never shows his face at Auburn again unless he is on the other sideline. Sadly, I think if he learned anything being a part of xCTT's staff, it was that loyalty in the coaching profession is a weakness. Who would think the biggest fault of xCTT was his loyalty. Loyalty cost us two years with Noel Mazzone. Loyalty brought us Nallsminger. Loyalty brought us a 5-7 2008 because the old-timers couldn't/wouldn't buy into the forward pass. Loyalty got him fired when he would not fire most of them. $aban certainly has no loyalty to any god, man or program...we'll maybe Mrs. Saban, but you get the point.
We may all need to close our eyes and step into the darkness ourselves if we want to look the devil in the eye and make him blink.
g'nite. WDE

WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE HEY!
I'm sorry but how can you piss on your alma mater like this? Someone's ego is bruised...
Monica quoted me. I'm a star.
Anyone read Joe Posnanski's article "Would I Lie to You" in the last weeks Sports Illustrated? Replace Jags and DeFilippo with Willis and Jay Jacobs, and that's pretty much how I feel about this.
I'm curious what kind of bad vibes/advice Petey Smith may (or may not) be getting from his older brother. I hope none at all, or we've got a problem we need to get rid of.
Jay GT- Do you know if Eric is a happy camper? I sure hope so.
TarHeel, I was thinking the same thing. Either that, or he doesn't want to follow in his brother's footsteps....and always be known as the "little brother".
Wow, that was bad Freudian slip.
I expect Petey Smith and Terence Coleman to end up at Bama now.
I expect Bryce Brown and Rueben Randle to end up at Auburn now. Or somewhere else.
Steve and AUant- I'm pooped. Y'all carry on and I'll catch up in the morning.
I find this interesting from R. Randle. He does not mention UA last night.
Randle says he has narrowed his choices to Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma and Tennessee, with Ole Miss as a longshot. He has basically ruled out Miami.
Also we now have a good shot at 4* JUCO CB Taikwon Paige
As far as T. Coleman going to Bama, no way he sounds really pissed at CJW and said he would never go to Bama. I am thinking more along the lines of Arkansas.
Well, after letting the James Willis move set in last night, I am still shocked by it. I would be interested to hear Joe Whitt Sr's thoughts on this move. I have a feeling that James may have worn out his welcome at Auburn for any future employement. It is one thing to leave and it is a whole different thing to go to bama and then spew the bama tradition bs in his statement release. Hope we beat their butts next year.
Anyone else see that post from Kim in the Bunker? She linked to July 2008 post on tideinsider.com that said James Willis will be hired at Bama in Jan. 2009. That's sorta fun. I love a good conspiracy dontcha know.
Other questions:
So Petey says he's done with Auburn and headed to bama, but has bama actually offered him?
Is Randle really done with bama?
(This is all said in my best "soap opera/stay tuned till next week" voice)
I'm not sure I understand all the angst and ill will.
From a professional view, if I were in his shoes I might do the same. Staying on staff at AU in three years isn't exactly promising.
As much as that hurts me to say.
WDE!
That looks a bit confusing.
I was inferring to job security.
The anger has waned, but I still think Saban is an evil, greedy, cutthroat s.o.b. and that JW is a greedy traitor.
So now we need a DB coach and a LB coach. Does anyone know who AU might be going after?
Oh, btw, Good Morning, Hotties and War Eagle!
The Willis situation just further confirms my feelings about what college football has become. The coaches, for the most part, are simply mercenaries; the players, for the most part, are mercenaries. Everything is about money, and money is all that matters.
I remember Tubs saying soon after he was hired that it was "just a business." I remember thinking that if its just a business, then why should I care about it?
I lobbied hard to get Pat Sullivan as our coach when Tubs was hired; Pat never looked at AU football as just a business. Of course, few people paid any attention to me because it is a business to most.
Nothing personal, James, but I hope you fail miserably. Its just a business, and you now work for a competitor.
Well said, coosa.
Agreed Coosa.
Forget him. Time to move on. Let Roof coach the LBs and then we get a bad @$$ secondary coach. Then we go on out on 11-28-09 and let willis get the hell beat out of him. This Saban will work his ass to death and he will never get to see his family again.
WOW. Just wow. I get to work this morning after listening to Auburn squander a terrific chance at beating UK last night, and then find out the Willis defected.
This must be what Castro feels like when Cubans come to America. I gotta say, it's hurtful. (NOTE: I am in no way implying that Auburn is like Cuba.)
In the end, I don't think this hurts us that badly. He is still just a LB coach and that had something left to be desired, as evidenced by Tray Blackmon's inability to cover anyone on a pass play. However, this does beg the question of why? If its about money, I get it. I have no qualms with anyone who wants to make more money, as that is what a free market economy is based on. However, if it is about ego, then I'm mad. Something tells me it's a little of both.
Either way, Coach Willis, you are still a Tiger. You did play at AU and coach there for a long time. Just don't be surprised when no one wants to have you at their tailgate. And don't get mad when the student section pelts you with insults next year at JHS.
Enjoy your new life with Napoleon II. May November 28, 2009 be your Waterloo.
I feel like Auburn is taking steps backwards while Alabama moves forwards. It makes me sick to compliment Satan and the Criminal Tide!
Now these guys on Jox are implying that Willis left because of his wife's skin color.
WILL THIS EVER END!?!
Then don't, Gnome
Good Morning Hot Ones!
Well said Coosa!
I wonder what it's like in that moment when you realize you've have given your blood, sweat, and tears to something then reality hits that it's just a business? It must be crushing!
Well as Coosa said our business is Auburn Football so lets get to work. I like the focus on these JUCO players. I hope we get Paige.
Petey Smith and bama are made for each other. Why would it take Willis switching to bama for him to suddenly decide he has a clear leader? Why didn't he have a clear leader when CJW was at AU?
All the more reason to bring that Tana Train into the AU station. Whoot Whoot!
hooray. sprint contractor/indy wireless store has real people working there and not smug robots... 30 bucks later and I'm back to being completely mobile...

Because of his wife's skin color??? What color is she Crimson?? Then that would make sense.
I have to think this was in the works for a while. There has been chatter involving T. Coleman and P. Smith for a week or so. Jay G, you mentioned that the AU folks were backing off Smith a little and Coleman began crawfishing on his commit as well. I think the staff and the recruits knew what was going on.
Hey Gnome, there is a quick solution if you don't like the noise coming out of that radio. Shut the idiots off.
LOL, AUBigCat
Did his wife use fake tanning stuff? Because that orange glow probably does go over better at Alabama.
okay, so maybe mobile isn't the best thing for me. forgot to log in, and got a little button happy there sorry for the triple post.
Willis on a Stick.
Mornin' Hotties.
Mon- someone knew in July 2008 that Willis would be a bammer this month? That's scary.
Ballin'- I'm off today and I don't plan on seeing the world, so watch out ;-)
I am better today...Willis is dead to me.
Look Coaches today are scum. I hate that I am old school on your word and loyalty, but thats not todays world in any sector of business and college football is a business, a big one.
The kids as recruits should take a class that states all coaches recruiting you would lie and rob their mother if it meant more money.
I watched a terrible but funny movie the other night, a classic. Johnny B. Goode, with Anthony Michael Hall as the star qb. I know, right.
Anyway, remember the scene where all the recruiters are outside his house. They are fighting, offering to shave their heads, girls, money, Hell even Ole Tex (texas) bought grandpas wall eyed gibblers(fishing lures).lol.
So yea, its all a nasty business.
PeterF-
that's ok, all's forgiven
triple posts=number posts
Plane went from Biloxi (Demond Washingto) to Memphis for very brief stop b4 returning to AU last night. Anybody got any ideas which coach(es) was/were dropped off in Memphis and who they may be going to see?
I would assume plane will be going back to pick him/them up today?
Nothing yet on flightaware for N20RU
Memphis? Mmm, watch the ducks march out of the hotel lobby. Beale Street, Blues, ribs, Elvis, basketball, crime, mmmmmm, Albert Means....lots to do and see,
New post/thread up. See y'all there.
Petey Smith-Here is my summary of the kid. You have four types of recruits.
The ones who had a great junior season and pretty much lack off their senior season due to scare of injury or just lack of surrounding talent.
Then you have the ones you come out of no where there senior year and all of the sudden get offers at the last minute.
Third you have what I call campers. There are so many camps at colleges now that coaches watch a kid for a week, see something they like and offer him then and there scared he might be seen or discovered by other schools.
Fourth you have what I call fringe guys. These guys have always been around. Usually good athletes. but some reason or another big time schools are scared away, due to size, injury, grades, etc. These guys either disappear to working at the grocery store, prep school, or someone takes a chance on them.
Petey Smith is the first type, he had a great junior year on a stacked high school team. So he is basically on his accolades from last year. He is a good athlete, but no game changer. He needs to back off the after school Burger King runs.
Memphis?? hmmm...Maybe Chizik stopped by his agent Jimmy Sexton's house to see how he could get AU to give him a raise if he took over CJW duties. Now that would just take our roadshow over the top!
This is why he went to bammer:
