Auburn adds another commitment

Hey everyone. Sorry I'm a bit late on this particular commitment.

Our friends at AuburnSports.com report that Leroy quarterback Clint Moseley, a three-star recruit, has committed to play football at Auburn next season. Moseley was on an official visit to Arkansas State this weekend.

He picked Auburn over ASU, UAB, South Alabama and Marshall.

NOTE: I'll be interested to see how this affects the Tigers' efforts to land Raymond Cotton.

Weird deal here with Moseley. Not sure why they're doing this. Barrett Trotter hasn't yet played his first college snap and Kodi Burns has two years left and Auburn still is working to land Raymond Cotton and Tyrik Rollison.

It's reasonable to infer, then, that Auburn isn't expecting to land either of those two QB prospects listed above.

and didn't we off a grey shirt to the QB out of Daphne as well?...

I will be interested in seeing where Cotton lands and how his father does or doesn't figure in his career long term.

Blogger AUBigCat said...

Yea that's what I think too Jay. I sure hope Mr. Football has the goods for the next level.

7:54 PM
Blogger Monica said...

That kid from Daphne wasn't recruited as a QB. He played QB in high school.

7:54 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Those competing offers were not very impressive.

Also, Neal McCready (now a Rivals.com ace) says Ole Miss hasn't been paying attention to Moseley ... as has been inferred in other places.

I wonder what prompted this move.

Blogger Kathy said...

Jay GT, have you heard why Petey Smith isn't visiting next weekend. I heard he had canceled.

7:56 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Moseley looks like he's about 30 lbs away from seeing the field as an SEC QB.

7:58 PM
Blogger AUant said...

I for one am very happy with the Moseley commitment. Cotton is a very talented kid, but the baggage that he brings with the dad is not worth it. With Moseley said to be a life long Alabama fan...I'm thinking he'll play his heart out and play with a chip on his shoulder to prove the Bammers wrong.

7:58 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

As I understand it, Petey Smith's stock has fallen (for reasons that aren't clear to me) and he may or may not have a legit offer in hand.

So his status is kinda unclear.

8:02 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Why do people have such an issue with involved parents? Its the kids with absent parents that bring baggage.

That's surprising news about Petey. I haven't heard anything.

8:05 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I agree BigCat - I defended Mr. Cotton earlier this year saying he had the right to protect his child and his child's best interest. However, after reading more and more it seems to me that Mr. Cotton crosses a line into a stage mother/living vicariously through my child sort of parent. Obviously, this is 100% conjecture on my part.

8:06 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

I agree Big Cat. I don't have a problem with involved parents.

Blogger Kathy said...

Reading the comments made by Demond Washington, sounds to me like he needs to move away to stay out of trouble. He kept referring to the trouble he can get into at home.

8:09 PM
Blogger PCTiger said...

Involved Parents are not the problem. It's the Parents that think they should have some kind of say in how the program is run. Always in the best interest of the child. Cotton's father seems to me to be THAT guy.

I don't have anything against parents looking out for their kids, but from what I have read about Cotton's dad, Monica is correct, he has crossed the line.

Maybe Coach Malzahn saw something he liked with this kid....This is what AL.Com said about his O-Style the last 2 years under Coach Powell.

Sponge here. How are the hotties? I for one don't blame Cottons dad. Looking at AU implode on the field and on the coaching staff should make anyone nervous about sending their son off to that college. I for one don't think getting or losing Cotton is that big of a deal. He's a kid w/ physical skills, but a project as well. Probably two years away from contributing. I think Trotter has big potential

8:33 PM

I don't think Cotton was going to make or break this year's recruitment.

Tray's not enrolled in school, so it would definitely be hard to come back now. I think those rumors were just wishful thinking. I really think he would have benefitted from another year, but he had to do what he thought was best for his family.

No word on Kenney. He went to Oklahoma this weekend and was very excited about making that trip.

Some days it is hard to remember that the athletes are really in their late teens, early twenties.

You can't blame Blackmon for trying to take care of his family even if you think he would have been better off financially if he would have been able to wait a year.

Since there is only one football game left in the season, I'm not missing anything!

8:42 PM

Sponge, are your innuendos for Monica only, or can you share with the rest of us?

8:44 PM

A good evening to all the Hotties. Jay, thanks for all the great info today and this weekend. I haven't had much chance to read lately, but I'm about caught up now.

Just got to address what Sponge said - here's is good, solid info that you can trust. Heard it tonight from a guy who drives a potato chip truck for a living. One of his clients is a big time bammer who runs a Dairy Delite. The bammer says that they are about to go down on NCAA violations that will be far worse than their previous troubles. He didn't know anything about the who, what, when, where or why, but who cares anyway? Just so bammer goes down, right?

That's all that I know, but a story from characters with those kind of connections just has to be true. :)

Which in his mind means no one could possibly be cheating.

I'll make the same post to you that I made a few weeks ago..

It's ironic that Alabama must be cheating now because they are winning the recruiting battles, but when Tuberville was kicking Shula's rear end in recruiting it was because Tuberville and his staff were working harder...

Interesting how that happens.

A recruiting analyst says Moseley is short on physical gifts, but long on intangibles. Sounds like Kurt Warner.

Also, Michael Vick is a better pure athlete than Matt Ryan, but look at the improvement in the Falcons this year. Ryan gets more weapons focused on the bad guys and doesn't try to do it all himself.

RK - I agree w/ you. As for Moseley - I'd say AU is taking a risk, but for every "5-star" recruit than never plays a down of SEC football (see Raven Gray, Greg Smith) there is an equally unheralded recruit who turns into a great player - (i.e. SenDerrick, who was a 2-star recruit with few offers - 3 years later he's an NFL early entrant and will probably go early 2nd round)

I don't see us reeling Cotton back in, nor do I see us landing Rollison.

BTW, that hit last night was hard, but the hit Junior Rosegreen laid on Reggie Brown was still one of the most violent collisions I've ever seen on a football field.

THABOTN virgin here!

I read quotes last year from a college assistant that attended a combine who said certain UAT commits had nicer cars than he could afford. Most college assistants make six figures. I almost make six figures and my wife drives an aging minivan.

I was also puzzled why USC was not forced to vacate their NC from 2004since Bush was, by all accounts, a professional at the time and in 2005. Apparently you don't mess with the cashcows.

It must be a matter of who and how you give the benefits to a player. i.e. it's their 2nd cousin's car a family friend bought them that said recruit parks in his driveway and has in his possession 24/7.

No matter how lazy CTT's group got, the balance of power should not shift that dramatically as quickly as it did.

This is from Segrest's blog

Despite Moseley wanting to take his visit to The Plain this weekend, Malzahn told him to wait unitl Jan. 30, when wide receivers Bryce Brown and Kendall Kelly will be on campus.

Moseley said that Malzahn told him he'd visit Rubeun Randle Monday. Randle was reported to be visiting the Tigers Jan. 9, but then changed his mind. The News reported earlier that Randle's father doesn't believe his son is interested in Auburn. Moseley added that Malzahn will also visit Emory Blake, a wide receiver from San Antonio, Texas, who took a visit to Auburn this past weekend.

obviously there are some glaring mistakes in that article.

Ok..my thoughts.

Moseley, being here in Mobile I like the kid. He is a winner, has size, can play. Hell of a baseball player too. Look at the facts. The past Mr. Footballs have suceeded at a 60 to 70% rate. So you figure, he might not be Joe Montana, but he could end up being a good contributor. You just dont pass him up.

I figured Cotton was stringing us along, thats my personal view. I think signing day he would have went a different direction and we would have been without our qb for the class.

Moseley eats AJ McCarron's lunch every day ask anyone around the state. The fact that Mosely wasnt at the Alabama vs. Miss. high school game wasnt because Moseley wasnt talented it was because its a game where high school coaches pick who they want. AJ's backup for that game was a Hollingswoth kid, (UA's Gary Hollingsworths nephew) he was terrible. It was a travesty, but its a network thing.

I like the pick up. Recruits I thought we have done well so far considering we got started so late and its a transition year.

About bammers cheating, I dont get into that. Bama recruits hard plain and simple, thats Sabans thing he recruits, now coaching well, he is up there, but not a tactition, notice Florida and Utah, he didnt make adjustments, thats coaching.

Auburn I think will do better the next few years with this young staff. But it wont happen this year. It will take them a year to get up and running.

Turk - I'm with you. Saban recruits. That's it. I'm from S.Fla and hear that he is/was a real jerk when it comes to his treatment of assistants and staff. That, to me, explains why his assistants can't last more than a year or 2 with him.

I just don't get how any parent could let their kid anywhere near him.

CGC and staff seem to be doing pretty well considering the late start. Gotta feel pretty good about the future.

Some very good posts this morning. Glad to see the pursuit is still hot and heavy on the recruits. That's something we didn't hear with the other staff. Taking the daughter shopping now, wish me luck!

Is there any truth to the rumor that HABOTN was started by the REC to distract AU fans from their daily obligations at work/home, thus increasing the general entropy of our lives whilst providing a false sense of stability by decreasing the entropy as defined by Information Theory? Just a thought.
Hotties, discuss!

BTW, I have absolutely no idea what I just said. I might as well have been speaking Russian. Speaking of which, I don't like alphabets that don't look like ours. It's hard enough figuring out a different language when traveling, but totally hopeless if they don't use the "correct" alphabet. As you've guessed, after a very busy morning, work here has slowed to a crawl. It should get real busy again in the next hour or so, so you'll be spared this gibberish.

Jay GT apparently was appalled that I was discussing entropy, so he started a new thread.

I hope the Mosely kid means AU has recinded their scholly offer to Ray Cotton. Clint, a lifelong bama fan couldn't commit to AU fast enough once the offer was extended. Regardless of the fact that Leroy High is a small school in a smaller town (heck the school is the town), all this kid has ever done is win. How many Phillip Rivers or Pat Whites need to get away before some SEC school takes a chance? As I remember immediately following the announcement that Chizik was hired at AU, the elder Cotton said something to the effect of that it was apparent to him that with this hire Auburn wasn't committed to winning and therefore his son would not be playing football there. There is nothing wrong with a man looking out for his kid, but when that person thinks they know enough about the commitment of a university such as Auburn to winning and losing then you and your kid pack up your toys and go play somewhere else. We will take the kids with heart and the desire to play for Auburn...even if they are lifelong bama fans!
