Chizik takes his first home-run swings
1/16/09, AFTERNOON
Gene Chizik and his guys will be playing host to several high-profile recruits this weekend. We haven't yet nailed down a final number of arrivals, but it's either nine or 10.
Only one of them, linebacker Donald Ford, is an Auburn commitment.
UPDATE: The most intriguing visitor WAS Louisiana wideout DeAngelo Benton, who was a 5-star recruit (he signed twice with LSU) now considering all options after completing work in prep school.
He backed out of his trip. It probably won't be rescheduled.
Another Louisiana prospect, defensive tackle DeQuinta Jones, will be on the Plains as well. He's still in high school. Jones committed to U. Michigan last summer, but met with Arkansas coaches last weekend and will visit with the Tigers this weekend. He's considering all options.
One of Alabama's top uncommitted players, North Jackson High linebacker Tana Patrick, will be on the Plains this weekend. Chizik and his staff consider Patrick one of their top three targets overall.
Other expected visitors include: Defensive end Nosa Eguae, offensive linemen Brandon Moore and John Sullen, tailback Anthony Gulley, wideout Emory Blake and athlete Demond Washington.

I'm not going to get excited about any of these guys until we get an "official recruiting report" form Omnica.
Whenever you are ready Mon, we are waiting.
I'm intrigued with Monica's ability to scout all these kids from Huntington, W. Va.
I guess she's getting all this information from Kristi Malzahn?
It's good to see us going after WR's but have the coaches looked at our offensive line depth chart and how many OL's we signed last year?
Ahem.
Lionel James?
Or do we need an O line coach for that, Griff?
It couldn't hurt, Senor Mexico.
At this point ... our program will be get an illegal formation penalty on every play because we don't have 5 offensive linemen.
Poor Griff.
I think you'll get some satisfaction this weekend, though I'm not blown away by the names being discussed.
Oh lawd.....
Seriously, who plays RT? I figure there is a reason Andrew McCain was on the bench while pugh and bosley switched in and out.
Senor Mexico,
I agree ... Andrew McCain has a cult following in some places ... the way Caudle does ... as much problem as I had with some of the decision making of the coaches, there's got to be a reason why they don't play.
Maybe he is like mario and doesn't know who to pick up if the protection changes, good enough reason to sit to me. I always thought my HS coach was a fool for saying it was 90% mental and 10% physical but he was right.
I have no comment.
Funny thing. My HS coach said my problems were 90% physical.
Monica,
To answer your question from the previous thread, the official state spirit of Alabama is Crystal Meth.
Although Caudle got shunned a bit premature last year while Tony Franklin was having "the best problem of his life" deciding between two "really good" quarterbacks.
Not saying Caudle is any good... I am saying I don't trust Tony Franklin's opinion.
cheater
The official state spirit of Alabama is Black Jack.
PM reporting that Benton backed out.
Any truth?
Jeffrey Lee says the same thing... he's out
If that is true it supports my paranoia...
"Conecuh Ridge Alabama Fine Whiskey" the "official state spirit"
Terry Price to Ole Miss... talk about a coaching carousel we have created.
I thought PBR was the state drink....
DeAngelo Benton is backing out and staying home this weekend.
I thought Conecuh Ridge got in trouble with the Revenuers, and the state quietly stripped that designation.
I freely admit I could be wrong about the second part of the above statement.
Nor am I, Jay G. Tate.
Also, I trust Franklin's opinion of Todd over Kodi 110%. He made the right call there. The "great problem" of choosing between two "good QB's" was nothing more than coachspeak, probably to avoid hurt feelings....The same feelings that were hurt on a fateful Tuesday, I believe.
"I'm intrigued with Monica's ability to scout all these kids from Huntington, W. Va."
Being that I was raised in the west end of Huntington, so am I lol.
That was a weird situation to start with. Our WR cupboard is bare and we need help, but I think with all the problems he's having qualifying keeping this kid in school is going to be a challenge no matter where he goes.
I taught at Auburn and remember a certain basketball player who took my class (Econ 201). I have no idea how he got out of high school, much less how he got in Auburn.
Jet - The reversal legislation never passed the Alabama Senate.
Alan - You were reared in WV. I was not.
I don't think a word of "coach speak" has ever come out of Tony Franklin's mouth.
We and Tennessee seem to be doing some bottom feeding.
I just think he was delusional.
I'm telling you. These recruits are laying a Jimmy Sexton down on us. LSU wasn't making Benton's offer swagalicious enough and so he announces a visit to Auburn knowing the LSU staff will NOT allow him to switch his commitment.
I've moved from paranoid to convinced.
Anybody going to the BB game tomorrow?
Well hopefully the coaching staff is seeing thru all these ploys and staying focused on the recruits that we have a real shot at landing.
Didn't pass the Senate? I am shocked.
We're getting hosed in recruiting. The existing AU talent level is as low as it's been in years. I'm depressed. I guess that should be depressed2 since depressed is already taken.
Not me...
We are gonna get the Mark Gottfried kicked out of us tomorrow. I have no desire to see it in person.
monica, maybe Benton received some inside information, like Les Miles is a moron.
Delurking to comment about the Alabama Senate (of all things)
Having worked for them it doesn't surprise me that something didn't pass....it's rare for ANYTHING to pass the Senate
Wendy
WENDY!!! So it took a Senate reference to get you outta the shadows! I'll remember that. ;-)
Mon- Swagalicious just might make it into the 2009 lexicon....keep working it :)
Jay a little of topic but you mentioned in a earlier post about your work being slow. We just laid off 20% of our work force today. People who had 12 years in, now looking for jobs. I pray everyday economy gets better for everyone's sake.
Wow! What type business are you in tigerfan?
Thank you for your support, Jim!
:-)
i guess whining about having to work too hard would be gauche... there's that word again! Why is it so frequently associated with me? (Rhetorical query)
Terry Price to Ole Miss.
I will be at the game Saturday. I suffered through the poor free throw shooting Wednesday. It was AWFUL.
FL didn't play very well. But AU gave them too many layups on pick n rolls. We are ok if we push the ball and make quick shots. We are terrible if we try to run any offensive plays.
Conecuh Ridge = Swill.
Jet spoke of a the cult following for Neil Caudle. There is a worse cult following for Kodi Burns. And please everyone, don't insult Jason Campbell by saying Burns and Campbell are similiar. Campbell at the lowest point in his career was MUCH further along and showed MUCH more promise than Burns has at this point.
I too wondered about Andrew Mccain when they were moving Bosley out to Tackle. I really have doubted the last three years or so about Hugh Nalls idea about who can play, remember King Dunlap and others of his ilk.
Monica ... Just remember ... The Alabama Senate put the"fun" in dysfunction.
Burns and Campbell are in no way similar.
However, except for skin color, CAUDLE and Campbell ARE very similar.
Caudle?
He's still someone you think about?
TarHeelTiger, be glad to have you in the club. Be warned however, some take exception and will call you a doom-and-gloomer. Stand strong.
Denny ...
Agreed re Burns v. Campbell, although I supported Kodi playing. Jason was much further along. I know they loved Boz and considered him our OL with the most heart. I just think Nall lost his effectiveness, and I don't think he had clean hands on the staff dysfunction. Clean slates can positive benefits.
Caudle's Incomplete pass to avoid a sack or grounding call against UTM belongs on the season highlights DVD (cept there ain't one :))
He showed better mobility and arm strength in his two "cameo appearance" series than anything else I saw from our QB's all season.
ALSO, our backup recieviers "ran good routes" when Caudle was in... Why? because his throws were on target and ON TIME.
I never saw this mythical UTM appearance. He coudln't have been much worse than the other guys though, right?
There is a reason it was "mythical". Nearly all of the students and 60% of the other fans had already left the game.
This was game 1 of 1 that was a yawner where we were winning (as opposed to a losing yawner)
About Burns vs Campbell: I don't know if anyone thinks they are similar players. I think the similarity is that they were both horrible at some point in their careers.
My rebuttal is just because J-Cam ceased being horrible, it doesn't mean Kodi will. But it also doesn't mean Kodi will automatically suck.
I still think that burns has promise and did make some nice steps when playing everyday in that patchwork "offensive scheme" esminger was putting together. i really wish that he played from day 1 as i think he would have been a servicable SEC qb if he did
Weagle83 sorry about delay had to go to kids ballgame. Manufacturing.
