He landed on his feet ...
Say this about Steve Ensminger: He knows how to network.
Just six weeks after losing his assistant job at Auburn, Ensminger is back in business. He will coach quarterbacks at Smiths Station High School.
Big ups to O-A News ace Andrew "Gribs" Gribble for a brilliant lead.

Coaching QB's at Smith's Station?
That is good news for the tight ends.
WOW!!!!
He's like a Cat with NINE Lives!!!!
Well guess what thats 8 down and only 1 left to go!!!
AUn, that's just awesome.
Add Ensminger to the list of guys waiting for Tuberville to coach again. I'm still not sure that's going to happen.
Jay G.
I agree Tommy Tuberville won't get a Good Job like AU at his age and want to put in the time to rebuild.
He's only gonna get a rebuilding job and that takes years to do and I don't think Tommy has the patience and time to put into the job.
Plus Bar-B-Que don't last that long in the sun!!!!
I hope Smiths Station is ready for some mediocre QB play.
Sensi,
Mediocre would be palatable....how about atrocious QB play!!!!!
As in I can't coach QB's play!!!
He's filling out his Alabama state retirement forms.
11 PHil Gargis
or not, I can't remember
Good god.
13 James McKinney.
THT - you remember correctly
For those who don't know Phil Gargis is one of Auburn's great recruiting stories. He was going to play for Bama, but his gf (now Ms. Gargis) told him she was going to Auburn. She was the gorgeous majorette with the waist length blond hair we men endured the first half of football waiting for. (One of a plethora of gorgeous majorettes Auburn has fielded BTW). Phil made a wise decision.
What an indictment on Tubs offensive staff!
Former OC - Franklin - back to HS consulting
Former OL (co-OC for a time) - Nall - trucking company COO
Former TE/QB (co/interim-OC for a time) - Ensminger - QB coach at a small HS
Former RB/ST - Gran - unemployed, interviewed at UT (note* I think Gran was a good RB coach)
Former WR - Knox - rumored to USM but never confirmed? Unemployed?
Compare to defensive staff:
Former DC - Rhodes - HC @ ISU
Former DL - Dunn - joined staff @ Syracuse (confirmed?)
Former DE - Price - joined staff at ISU
Former LB - Williz - retained at AU
No wonder the D always had to carry the O. Is there really any question as to which side was better coached?
PeterFrankenschmidt from the phone here:
The only way this could be less of an example of landing on his feet is if he were coaching JV or managing a trucking company.
I think Tubs has his eye on a few jobs around the country, namely the SE. Until he gets an opportunity at one of these places, I thnk he'll stay on the sideline.
When did COO of a company become a bad job? C-level's make big bucks, get stock options, and drink fine wines. They don't get boo'd on Saturday either.
isn't it sad that nobody really wants our former offensive coaches?
media up here said that Kiffin was looking at Eddie Gran. that was a week or so ago.
statguy, I was thinking the exact same thing. Stay in Alabama, get the teacher's retirement package. He shouldn't have that much longer to go.
PeterFrankenschmidt on the phone:
tranporting peanuts is less than glamourous
I wish all those former coaches the best in future endeavors. That being said, i'm so happy none of us will have to endure that kind of incompetency on offense ever again. Unless someone has a son playing at smiths station, bless your heart.
Jimmy Carter forged a fine career growing peanuts. :-)
It'll be interesting to see where all these former Tubs assistants turn up and how they do...especially the now legendary BBQ Crew.
I love fried catfish. My dream is Tubs will get back in that business in Auburn. A big plate of catfish with cole slaw, fries, and a glass of Tubby's Pond Water sure would be good on game day.
More PeterFrankenschmidt:
Carter was as imcompetant at leading as the offensive staff was at coaching last year. that being said, I admire most everything he's done since, sans the anti-Israel comment or two.
High school coaches all over Alabama and Georgia are calling Smiths Station to schedule a game -- they'll travel to Smiths Station ... twice.
I wasn't saying that COO was a bad job in and of itself. But, it is a stark contrast to coaching for a guy who has been in the coaching biz as long as Nall had been.
Oh an my apologies if this shows up twice, I seem to be having some issues trying to post from my blackberry this morning.
Maybe some of Jimmy's peanuts will be able to eat while you wait for your fried catfish ... wonder if Tubs knows how to make some cheese grits to go with the catfish.
PeterFrankenschmidt is driving 63 mph and wondering why HABOTN is ignoring my login and double posting everything.
That's one way to be "big man on campus".
PF ...
Don't get arrested for DWH (Driving While HABOTNing). You could lose your license.
Jet, I don't think the roads I travel have rules.....wait, one rule: If you see a 'gator in the road, run over it.
RK- you will be able to find them on Food Network.
FYI .... now I see why those in the North flock to Florida...high today in Northern Indiana +5. High tomorrow +2. can someone say buuurrrrrrr
So would J.B. Grimes be a good pick up for OL Coach?
I'm pretty sure Don Dunn isn't at Syracuse.
Any background on Grimes?? Wasn't he at Miss St.?
Wonder if there are any radio stations for Mrs. Ensminger to call in Smith's Station?
Jet,
Love the new Handle!
THT.....Tubby Pond Water!!!
bahahahahahahaha i spit up my coffee!!!
FSJ- that's hilarious. Hope you are well. Lots of rumors about your health... oh wait, those pertain to TRSJ.
FSJ
Probably will still call "Sports Call". May not have gotten over it yet.......
IMO, Tuberville is waiting out the A&M job....
I don't think Sherman will last there.
Mobilz- I wish I could take credit, but that's what Tubs called his iced tea back in his restaurant days in TN.
That's why I put the ? With him Jay. I had heard rumors, but couldn't remember if it was confirmed or not.
By the way, a funny side note. My wife's Bio-Chem prof told his class this morning that he didn't expect them to show up Friday morning because it was going to be so cold that "their skin might freeze within 10 minutes". (It's expected to be about 12 Friday morning). This guy is from Montana where they occasionally see temps of -50 c. I just thought this was extremely funny. I mean, c'mon! 12 is cold, but its not freeze your skin off cold.
THT,
So you think he was serving that to the Bar-B-Que Gang?
Maybe even to the Offensive side of the ball the last couple of years?
I guess that explains the "Drop Off in Production and Talent"
"Tubby's Pond Water" aka Ice Tea
THT
Is that anything like the favorite in L.A. ---- Stump Juice
From college assistant to high school assistant. Really? That's quite a step down. What a statement about the offensive coaches.
I think Coach Kerry Stevenson of Vigor High heard Ensminger was hired and just called Smith's Station and said they would like a 4 for 1....
Vigor would come to their place and beat...ooops I mean play them 4 times at Smith's Station to 1 time in Prichard.
bahahahahahaha....
D. Miller
Sounds like the Prof is looking for a reason not to come.
Use to have a Food Chem Prof that forgot to come to class. We would walk to his office and get him.
is ensminger a "head coach in waiting", at least?
Smiths Station, I guess everybody has to live somewhere. What a hole.
I discovered yesterday that in the Tallahassee Airport, "Capital" is spelled with both an 'a' and an 'o' depending on what you're looking at. Seems like something for Bill Engvall...
I just thought a Bio-Chem prof would know better than to say your skin would freeze in 10 minutes at 10degrees.
D. M
I think it has something to do with the "Chem" in their background and title. All those "Chem" classes was enough to make my head a little woozie.

How would everyone feel about JB Grimes as the OL coach?
I'd be extremely underwhelmed by that hire. I don't view him as that good of a coach. His MSU lines were extremely porous.
Hotties!
Check out who's leading the Crusade for Sammy the Cat!
"Sammy the Cat Banned"
HA @ DWH
Nice, Peter.
This shounds like a good country song ...
"I Lost My Mind When I Lost My Pants"
Hey gatiger,
The building is the capitol and the city where the capitol is located is the capital.
Just thought that you would like to know.
oops DWH credit goes to Jet not Peter! Sorry, Jet!
Pat Dye lives in Notasulga? Lead on Coach Dye!!
Anonymous - I'm aware of the distinction, I'm missing why they feel the need to use both spellings. It just struck me as odd. It's not going to keep me awake, it's just something I noticed.
I shall not give up my undeserved credit.
Tallahassee has an airport?
JetZ - didn't CPD lose his pants at Lake Martin some years ago? Or, is that what you're referencing?
Yes, gatiger, he did.
And I don't think he's ever been the same. Having watched the video of Pat Dye, feline advocate, I'm convinced of it.
gatiger
I guess they were making reference to the building as the capitol in one case and Tallahassee as the Capital city of Florida in another case.
Anonymous is smarter than the rest of us.
No I am not, you are
no, you are.
Boyz !!!
Are we going to have to seperate you?????
JetZ - if you have a link of that, I'd like to see it. I heard the morning guys reference it yesterday on 740 but, and I'm sure this will surprise you, that story did not make the news here in the greater ATL. Go figure.
Oddly enough that little video and saving Sammy, kinda made me say outloud "Oh my gawd". Thank goodness for rural Alabama and a former SEC champion head coach?
Any crutin' news today Mon?
Wasn't Ensminger a HS QB coach when Tubs hired him?
I saw the cat thing WSFA the other night. Makes me want to delete Pat as my FB friend.
I'm not seeing anything new, Mr. Tommy.
Rumor has it Don Dunn will be caoching the DL at Ole Miss again.
When do you think AU will finish up with the coaching hires?
Pat Dye is on FB?
Pat Dye is indeed on Facebook. So is Coach Luper, but he won't accept my friend request. What's up with that?
Now is the real PFD? Or just some fan imposter? I didn't peg PFD as a facebooker.
J-Z ... you dipstick ... Luper better be making friends with guys who 40 times that aren't clocked with a sun dial like yours.
Dye's friends list is funny ... lots of ex-coaches, including Syracuse tie victim Dick MacPherson
Not that it's anything to brag about, but I'll bet I can still take you in the 40 short stuff.
J-Z ... I still have a great first step ... the next 39 are sketchy.
Epic Fail... I have heard of lateral moves, but this is exciting. Smith Station can look forward to Ensminger's patented ankle pass, and the boot leg right play. Watch out 4A High Schools, a train is a coming.
Whatever happened to Stephen Ensminger after the transfered from Auburn? Did he get to play somewhere else?
Smith's Station is a 6A high school and even made it to the first round of the 2008 playoffs before it met Prattville.
WarEagleRK, I THINK he's at La Tech
Can't wait until the Smiths Station fans get a load of their slowest back running the stench play over and over and over.
Jet, I think I know what play you're talking about, but what play are you talking about?
college asst. Coaches will make decent coach in HS let's not get carried away but it is sad a coach from AU gets his job demoted at that level. Real sad
Some call it the stretch play ... I call it the stench.
OK, I'm a woman. I don't know what plays are called. Describe it.
It's the play where the QB runs 4 yards in the backfield to hand off to the running back who is running parallel to the line of scrimmage trying to get to the corner before everyone else. It is slower developing than The Remains of the Day.
Stretch - To expand by force or tension. Play - Broadway shows consisting of prancing men, puppets, and River Dance.
Put the two together.
That's the one I thought you were talking about. Why did they keep trying that???? Even I knew it wasn't going to work!
Kids ... we've been joking around ... but I just got an email with a story attached that Gannett will furlough its employees for a week.
I presume this reaches down to the local papers.
Not good for Jay G and his compatriots. Let's not take his tolerance of us for granted.
Well eventually Luv, the other team wouldn't be prepared for it, and it would break away for a touchdown, or something like that.
Got a question, I remember Rudi and Steven Davis doing that play over and over again yet it was alot more effective when they did it. Was that because they're Rudi and Steven?
Not to step on any toes because I actually like and respect the two guys, but does anyone else think the roundtable leaves a lot to be desired unless number one legend Jay G is on?
Btw, the Alan they were arguing with wasn't me.
Yes, J-G carries the show when he's on air.
The rest of the time it sounds just like a couple random fans having a discussion over lunch anywhere in the gump.
mrtommyd, not this past season. Tate was always stopped at the line of scrimmage or worse.
To answer your question, I think it may have had more to do with the O-line. Anyone else have a better answer?
Yeah, I feel like someone is about to give me the specials at Down the Street next.
Jet - Here is the details of the memo the Newspaper Pres sent internal.
Memo
Oh Luv this season we couldn't do anything. And when we did, there was always an infraction to make sure it didn't count. It seemed like those lines way back when, were able to impose their will, and it didn't matter that the defense knew what was coming, they STILL couldn't stop. One thing I do remember is that there was an honest to goodness fullback leading the play, which I'm sure helped.
Fun times in the newspaper business, huh?
AWK!!
Where have you been, homes?
Tough all around JGT...
JGT - Does that mean we won't know what is going on for a week in the world?
mrtommyd, agreed. Our offense was completely inept. Hopefully, that's about to change.
And do we get to choose the week?
How about next week? I think it might be pretty quiet, not much going on.
We'll all come over to the Jay G Tate pad and play Guitar Hero all week.
I was talking with Wifey about this earlier.
I'm not sure how this will affect the HABOTN. My first thought is to shut it down for the unpaid week, but it's not your fault that things have gone so awry.
Still pondering the options...
I'm basically going to stare at a wall until leaving for the AU/UF game tonight.
See you all around 6:30 CST.
GULP!!
Jay, do you know anything about a special teamer who had a good year who might not be with the Auburn Tigers next year?
shut down ...... the .... habotn?
What will I do at work? How will I get accurate update info and speculation about Auburn?
By the way if something like that were to go down, I honestly would go through some sort of withdrawl.
So if JB Grimes gets the OL job at Auburn, can we call him Grimey like Homer Simpson called Frank Grimes.
I would suggest that, per the 25th Amendment, that you temporarily hand over the administrative and executive duties of the HABOTN to a trustworthy hottie.
"Trustworthy hottie" ... that's an oxymoron.
Aw, forget it. It'll never work.
OMNICA, OMNICA, OMNICA!
OMNICA = Alexander Haig
Jay, I hope you know that we all want what's best for you and your family.
HABOTN rocks but if we have to do without it a week... Gulp, I guess we can. Take care.
JetZ - good one.
Ditto what AUMom said. That's tough, Jay G.
I can't last an hour much less a week!
We could still commune on the HABOTN and J-G, I'm sure would join in on the discussions (because he loves us all so much). Just because there isn't a new thread to post in, doesn't mean it would have to be totally shut down. We can rumor monger with the best of them. Who knows we might exceed 1000 comments on 1 post. Sorry, but I'm addicted, I don't think I could force myself not to check in for a whole week. But, if I had to.... I guess... I could try...
However, I for one, would not expect Jay to do anything other than play GH and lounge around his house all week. I doubt I'd ever change out of my pj's and maybe not even shower if it was me.
I say we get Doug and Moon to hook up the HABOTN with free lunch at Salsaritas and we all get together. (That would probably force Jay to get a shower and change out of his pj's for the first time that week, so I dunno if he'd show).
Anyone know who's visiting this weekend?
JGT,
Why don't you "moon"light on one of the radio stations? 1440 could use some help - or 740 in the morning for the week 'off'
As I cool my heels in the Crapahassee Airport I'm learning that apparently the white zone is for the immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no parking in the white zone.
OK I'm way behind today so what's the talk JG at home for a week and HABOTN down??
Mac the visitors according to Scouts are:
Tana Patrick, Dee Ford, Brandon Moore and Petey Smith. Dee is already a solid commit and Petey is down to us and the evil empire but the other two would be huge if we could get them.
Gatiger ... Give me Ham on white, hold the Mayo
Excuse me Stewardess, I speak Jive.
Jimmy ... have you ever been in a Turkish prison?
The last thing he said to me, doc, he said, "Sometime when the crew is up against it, the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got and win just one for the Zipper. I don't know where I'll be then doc, he said, but I won't smell too good, that's for sure.
Well, I am an SSHS alum so I guess this is a good thing?? Yes? No? Maybe?
I know Coach Rose - he was my English teacher in 9th grade (not all that great honestly, but I didn't expect too much from a football coach) but he was a nice enough guy.
I'm sure Ensminger will fit in better at the HS level. Smiths has been down recently and have struggled since moving from 5A to 6A, but Rose had some success this year and made it to the playoffs.
Oh well, good luck CSE, and Go Panthers!
Demond Dennis has to be the kid we are trying to steal from Troy..i mean come on. Look at this kid run.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3W-DlenU0M&feature=related
Someone just added me on FB... if its one of you folks let me know. I accepted cause of the AU shirt, assuming it was a fellow HABOTNer.
MillerTime ... me and you are homies now.
Cool... Good to put a face w/ a name. I see we get our paychecks from the same place too.
JetZ - Marian P would be so proud.
Are we going to get a basketball post at all? Men vs Florida in the home SEC Opener. Tip-off is at 7pm and TV is Raycom (check local listings)
MarianP don't do no HABOTN, gatiger, u gotta kno
Hey...Desmond Dennis is friend with Phil Leutsenmonster on FB...What does that mean? He's also friends with Bryce Brown. The plot thickens
All this male bonding is giving me a warm fuzzy. :-)
no comment.
BayTiger - Jay G. is going to be covering the game I do believe.
J-Z - Look at all you haters gettin all stalkerlicious...
hee hee
Can't you see J-Z all Boo Radley-like standin' in the shadowy corner of Lutzenkirchen's bedroom, watching him sleep?
reepycay
I moved out when he reaffirmed the verbal...I'm moving on to Kansas now.
That's just creepy.
Dmiller is feeling the HABOTN stalk.
But keep up the good work.
JetZ - I'd noticed an absence of Wan, that April, with his shores sooth,...
I re-read "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" last fall ... wait a minute, that was "Mess of the Tubervilles."
The thought of JetZ going all Boo Radley amuses me.
No ... it's J-Z ... going Boo Radley, not me.
"Miz Jean Louise ... may I present to you Mr. Arthur 'J-Z' Radley?"
At bookstores across the nation... the most awaited sequel in American literary history ...
To Kill a Hottie by Harper Lee with Coach Pat Dye
My apologies for mixing my "J's" and "Z's", either way, I get a chuckle out of the thought. I don't care if it's everyone's favorite Mr. Pulley, it's funny.
I like the book idea too. They are buddies or so we've been led to believe.
Gatiger ... it just works better with that lanky ol' J-Z standin' like a statue in the corner.
Omnica can be Scout in the ham costume.
we kicked it around previously- -but wasn't there some sentiment that folks would be willing to convert this to a pay site- (if that's what it took)
That works for Omnica. If memory serves me correctly, I believe she's actually from just down the road a piece from the author's house.
WDEwg ... I pay for 2 other sites, and I'd be glad to pay to HABOTNize ... but I would imagine the Advertiser would want the revenue and that would likely prevent Jay G from seeing anything substantive, or even anything at all ... and I ain't for that.
Yeah, Jet- he'd have to leave and go completely on his own- -which I don't know if there is enough of us to support him, wifey and soccer child- -or at least not at a price that I'd be able to do.
Jay G., Sorry to hear about your furlough. As for the HABOTN, you do what you got to do. We will follow your lead. The state of the economy is only matched by the state of the 2008 Auburn football season. Hopefully both will get A LOT better this year.
Monroeville is just a half a hop from Brewton.
There is actually more to do in Brewton than in Monroeville...
That's scary, huh?
depressing actually... especially if you're from monroeville...
I'm from Arab, there's tons of... well... umm... well, it's close to Huntsville at least.
Haha Millertime, ever heard Henry Cho's bit about Arab?
Wow, a high school QB coach?
The middle school history teacher is QB coach at my high school...
wakerider,
Yeah, Henry Cho is married to a girl from Arab...
Jay G - Any news on Steve Campbell coming to coach OL?....will that be the last hire for the team?
For some reason, landed on butt or head seems more appropriate.
Has anyone other than Campbell and Grimes interviewed for the OL job?
Campbell I could take, I'm not sure Grimes would do the trick...
What do you think the cut in pay was for Ensminger? Actually surprised that a HS quarterback coach gets paid.
I am in Auburn now.
Almost game time.
Talk of Brewton got me to thinking about Glenwood (it's 7 miles SE of Luverne). Took a nostalgic tour and, to my amazement, that ghost town has STREET view! Saw the houses where my dad was born and grew up.
Hi JayGT- I'm almost scared to watch the game. Will I jinx them?
Scared to watch an Auburn basketball game?
WAR DAMN EAGLE! BEAT THE GATORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tarheeltiger - Its scary that google street views has made it to all the small towns in Bama...Some of these towns dont even get internet access but they are on google
on THE Google.
sorry...The Google
Jeff Jarvis just wrote a book about the way google sees the world and the way we all are part of the Google era...its called ... "what would Google Do"
Hoops thread is UP.
Hoops there it is
