The HABOTN Signee Bios® (Episode II)
FRIDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,041
Hey everyone. Let's take a peek at the next group of 2009 Auburn signees.
I divided the list into three groups so it wouldn't be spammy. Episode I was yesterday. Check below for that information.
LB/DE Donald "Dee" Ford
6-2, 190, St. Clair County HS (Odenville)
Ford played mostly in anonymity in high school, which eliminated the opportunity for hype. He played outside linebacker at St. Clair County, but Ford believes the Tigers want to use him as a speed-rush guy at end. Either way, he'll need a year of intensive weight training. He looks like a wideout right now.
LB Harris Gaston
6-4, 225, Bessemer Academy (Bessemer)
Gaston is an intriguing prospect. He was a dominating outside linebacker in high school who scared opponents with his ferocity. The problem is that he played in a private-school league. The competition wasn't notable. Is Gaston good enough to thrive against top public-school products? He showed refined aptitude for run-stopping and pass-coverage responsibilities in high school.
•WR Anthony Gulley
5-11, 185, Brantley HS (Brantley)
Gulley is another small-school product, though Brantley High is a consistent contender for the Class 1A championships. Gulley was the Bulldogs' do-everything guy last season and emerged as a lower-tier prospect. He's very quick. The knock is that Gulley isn't a big guy and his narrow frame suggests he won't be getting much bigger. Auburn thinks he'll emerge as an ideal option at slot receiver, where he can catch quick throws and use quickness to break free.
OL Andre Harris
6-4, 325, Lovejoy HS (Hampton, Ga.)
Harris committed to Auburn last summer and never seriously considered another scholarship offer. He had plenty -- from Tennessee, Rutgers and several Atlantic Coast Conference schools. He tipped the scales at 330 as a junior, but he arrived at his official visit in early January at 305. He projects as a guard in college.
DT Josh Jackson
6-2, 260, Gainesville HS (Gainesville, Ga.)
Jackson is a virtual unknown in the recruiting community. Auburn assistant Tracy Rocker, during his days at Ole Miss, monitored Jackson closely and offered a scholarship earlier this week. The north Georgia prospect looks like a long-term project.
•RB Brandon Jacobs
6-1, 230, Parkview HS (Lilburn, Ga.)
Jacobs is a bulky back who brings power to the field. He's a long strider much like Carl Stewart, who played at Auburn earlier this decade. Jacobs received some January attention from Tennessee. Jacobs has the build and talent to play several different positions on both sides of the ball. His college role is unclear.
WR LaVoyd James
5-10, 175, Williamson HS (Mobile)
James is another of the short receivers Auburn targeted for Tony Franklin's spread offense. Williamson used James an slot receiver and he thrived in that role, showing no fear with crossing routes. He's has good lateral acceleration and has a refined approach to eluding defenders. James is a small player and doesn't have elite top-line speed.
CB Izauea Lanier
6-1, 185, Gordo HS (Carrollton)
Lanier is was a two-way player at Gordo. Auburn's new coaching staff viewed film of Lanier's work at cornerback and soon made an offer to play defense. He's more raw on that side of the ball, which signals a longer learning curve. Lanier said recently that his grades have improved significantly since his junior year and he expects to qualify.

okay
Sweet apron, Dear Leader.
I'll be posting a picture of that later today. Thanks.
I like our rec. groups but I really hope some of the vets step up and that Fast Freddie makes it to the second play.
It broke my heart you do not like to BBQ? I should a gone for the mug!!!
glad u like
I rike it.
Good Summary Jay.
Thanks for your support, Eddie.
Great work, as we've come to expect from the best AU beat writer in the land.
Any news on the coaching front
jgt - what are the chances you can put out an opinion piece on which recruits stand a decent chance of competing in '09?
Anybody want to talk the BC coaching situation?
Any news on the coaching front?
The assistants are taking some time off and Gene Chizik isn't.
Hope that helps.
Thanks Jay,
Just didnt know if you had heard any rumors swirling around about the vacancies still out there.
Michael - BC coaching situation? What's this? Please expand as well as expound on this topic. I may very well like to discuss it in extreme detail.
Credible information hasn't been available yet.
I had a good time with Bammer Math last night.
Underrated tangent in my opinion.
Yea...
The bammers have 16 Linebackers...Petey smith made a real good move for some quick playing time.
Eddie, my UT peeps up here think it's great that Kiffin has "stood up to Florida and showed they weren't going to be intimidated by the Gators anymore." whatever. they do recognize that the rest of the nation thinks Kiffin is an idiot but they don't seem to care.
Bammer math? What's that? Jed + Obadiah = hunting accident? car + cinderblocks = makeshift front porch since the front porch is now a makeshift closet/garage/tool shed?
off topic (i think), but any updates on coach quick?
Thanks Scottie. He looks like a complete Moron right now.
Coach Quick is not doing all that well.
Michael - you forgot the front porch as a repository for indoor appliances (tv's, refigerators, washer/dryer).
Michael - you forgot the front porch as a repository for indoor appliances (tv's, refigerators, washer/dryer).
Jay G, good stuff, once again! Before I discovered the HABOTN, I had no idea who was even on the team until I saw them on the field! Thanks!
I'm the only one who thinks the Kiffin thing has been blown WAY out of proportion, right? Thought so.
Thats not good news Jay. Is he is still in Arizona receiving treatment?
Jay in your opinion, do you believe the coaching staff did the right thing going after project guys while also getting hold of some JUCO talent that will play right away? In my mind that seems like a good strategy to get some immediate help while also sticking to the philosophy of finding athletes and turning them into future players. Thoughts?
Monica, I think Kiffin was trying his best to thump his chest and came out looking like a buffoon. If that's blowing something out of proportion than count me in that group.
What is the probability that Lebo with be at AU next year?
Mateo, it all depends on how he finishes...if it's a strong finish 50-50. If it's par for Jeff Lebo I don't think there's anyway the guy is here with the new facilities. New coach + new facilities= momentum. Hot Coach+New facilities= momentum.
Bad finish+New facilities= Sucks.
Nah, I don't think that's blowing it out of proportion. Some of the other stuff I've heard and read seems to be a bit of an overreaction. I guess I just don't have enough testosterone to really get it.
Lebo Returning next season after receiving Jacobs vote of confidence- 25%
True dat!
Anyone planning on going to the AU/UA baseball game at Riverwalk?
that's bad news.
Mon...I'm with you on the Kiffen thing. He was just yapping to a bunch of alumni and UF is a bunch of arrogant whiners.
If my comments above aren't enough of an indicator, I hate all things UF almost as much as I hate Bammers, so I may have a little prejudice going on.
I'm now 53, so maybe the ol' testeosterone level may be waning also......hmmmmm...note to self.....call for an appointment
Sorry you don't get it, Omnica.
For those of us that do, can't wait for Spurrier to make his mark! And, I don't think Meyer is done with Kiffin.....
Dr. HABOTN, Hoopie nees an appt.
He needs an appt.
I may be missing something, but I only count 10-11 scholarship seniors for the '09 season. The 2010 season will be very a senior heavy team (Currently 29 scholly juniors).
There will have to be a good bit of attrition after next season to be able to bring in a full recruiting class.
oFF TOPIC - still haven't bought a tv; was about to get samsung lcd and saw Panasonic THX 58" plasma that looked and sounded awesome.
anyone out there had one of those? is screen burn in still an issue?
SeanZ: I thought Auburn did a commendable job. I'm bumping the letter grade from C to B because of what Chizik et al. accomplished.
Made some big noise at WR. Fell flat at OL, though I think Andre Harris has a chance to be really good. I'm not very high on John Sullen.
Hoopie, As self appointed PA for Dr.HABOTN, I prescribe one case of Pabst Blue Ribbon longnecks to be ingested over a 3 hour period. Instant testosterone boost. And the ladies will love you. That's what I tell myself anyway.
D Miller, thanks for the depth chart. I was kidding when I suggested it, but that was some fine work there.
I HATE BAMA!
I think Kiffin, like all coaches, will be at the mercy of his W-L record. If he wins some big games, the UT fans will love the way he talks big and backs it up. If he falls on his face, they will ask what was this idiot thinking running his mouth off. Considering what he said about Meyer was at a booster rally, I thought it was blown way out of proportion. I also think it adds some juice to the UT-UF rivalry which had grown stale under Fulmer. Shouldn't rival coaches not like each other?
Dr. HABOTN ... thank the Lord you are not a medical doctor ... I would die in the ER with you trying to make a diagnosis the way you've agonized over this TV.
Just do it, man.
If a plasma TV falls flat (ie parallel to the groud) it's over. Like: Won't ever work again.
I went with LCDs.
I do like those Panasonic plasmas, though. Great TV for the price.
j-z - thanks, i needed a little help in the HABOTN medical clinic. more than one patient/day is too stressful because it doesn't leave enough time to keep up with the posts
I didn't realize the Kiffin thing was considered a big deal. I think it's rude to call a recruit when he's visiting another school, so Kiffin should apologize and UF should make their coaches read Ms. Manners every Sunday.
Oku rumors (since things are a little slow). Kiffin said at a lunch yesterday he expected a surprise announcement by day's end. They have two kids they're still after, but people speculated he was talking about Oku. Didn't happen with either recruit.
Doc - veering slightly from yours; I bought the Sony XBR 46" LCD this past November and love it. I suspect that like me, you're not spending any time with video games on it, so burn in should not be an issue based on all of my research (applies to lcd as well as plasma). I went with LCD over Plasma strictly because of the location. If you're going to have it where external light can come from the windows (or a hole in the ceiling/wall/whatever) and hit the screen then the LCD does not typically have the reflective issues of a Plasma. You'd also want to pay attention to that across the manufacturers as some screens seemed to handle it differently from what I saw.
Just my $0.06 worth which in West Vance, AL would be worth $0.12.
I agree wholeheartedly, Jay. I've waxed eloquent before on the clarity and beauty of my Panasonic Viera.
I am loving on Kiffin. Who would have ever thought we would have a coach in the SEC that Petrino could look at and go, hey, that guy's a jerk?
Dr. HABOTN, were you behind the push in D.C. to delay the digital TV signal? It all makes sense now......
I like Kiffen.... he has huevos...
However to get grande huevos he should have answered the kids phone when Urban called and called him a cheater to his face instead of talking about it later..
Then the SEC would not have a leg to stand on as it is a direct conversation between coaches.
And Panasonic has been in the top 3 (esp 42") on consumer reports almost since day 1.
Gentlemen, we have to save our phony baloney jobs!
statguy, Janzen Jackson signed with TN yesterday. I think that was one they were waiting on.
I have a 42" panasonic plasma that I bought in fall of '06. At that time the sports action was much smoother on plasma than LCD. I think they have improved that aspect of LCD. Glare is sometimes an issue on my plasma, I think the new Panasonic plasmas come with some sort of glare reflector. Not sure how well they work. I love my plasma but they seem to be losing ground to LCD.
Why do I always get the wharped one?
Trivia on the Tallassee Tigers (Demond Washington and my father's HS team). They held the record for number of consecutive wins by a high school team (57) for a long time. They did it under Coach Hot O'Brian, for whom their stadium is named. The string ending loss was to Sidney Lanier.
RE: Kiffin
Maybe I'm blinded by my bama hate. For this, I do not apologize. The enemy of my enemy is my friend sort of thing...
Thanks, Kathy. That closes the loop.
yep, astat, I had my hand on the trigger for the samsung 850 when I got blown away by the
Panasonic Viera TH-58PZ800U 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV.
I've always bashed plasmas for the glare, but that really shouldn't be a problem in the "woman cave". Ok, that didn't sound right, but Mrs THT watches a lot more tv in the basement tv room than I do.
Doc - I thought you settled on the Sony Bravia LCD. Get on with it, man!
Kiffin = Dipstick
But if Dipstick wants to occupy the time and anger of Nicky, Urby and the rest of the Hitler Youth, that's fine.
exactly, guhvnuh
Interesting Headline on PM's site .
BENTON: 'THEY TREATED ME LIKE FAMILY'
Wide receiver DeAngelo Benton said Friday he knew even before signing day on Wednesday that he would be an Auburn Tiger.
__________________________________
I think he should now be referred to as D-Lo!
I also discovered last night that Mr. Footmouth, Lane Kiffin, also took some shots at the mighty Tide. He also had Lance, don't want no Bama, Thompson get in on the act. Kiffin didn't just make an idiot of himself in terms of Florida. He had stupidity to spread around.
Jet - trust me, the tv indecision doesn't translate to the real job, or the HABOTN medical clinic. I think it's more of the "I'm perfectly content with the tv we have now, why can't the rest of the family let me save up this money for old maps" mindset.
Ahhh. Stalling disguised as indecision. Sneaky.
i have the 42" panasonic plasma and I likes it a lot. Except charter and the government screws up the potential the tv has
Mon - BINGO!!!
Dr. HABOTN, take credit card, make HDTV purchase, watch TV.
(Wifey had same "content with current TV" mindset, bought HDTV, now it's the only TV she watches...)
Mornin Hotties,
i am just curious, before bama's big class last year, had anyone ever heard the term "recruiting national championship" ? i had never heard that till last year (from bama fans) and since wednesday thats all i have heard them say. just wondering.
wazzzz happenin?
Am I the only person left in America without HDTV?
Yes Coop, you are...
Oops.
Coop, you and the Doctah of HABOTN.
nope Coop. for some reason my dad won't get HD. Probably the same reason he was the last to get a dvd player and a cell phone
Dang... 1 phone call and I get behind on here.
J-z, no prob on the depth chart... I usually do it anyway (just not this early). If you want a copy shoot me an email.
Doc,
Buy the TV already... LCD man.
as much as i don't want to admit it, have an hdtv is a must for sports. it is just an amazing difference. it really hit me when watching the last World Cup. watching some games from my old tv then going to watch games at bars with hd flat screens. night and day difference.
what's the world cup?
ok, heading out for sushi lunch and then by end of day I'll have a tv either bought or ordered. It's the least I can do in return for Hotties having to put up with this TV saga.
Plasma owners- y'all haven't had burn in of the ESNP ticker?
Coop - tomorrow it's your turn.
Harrison,
its a big soccer tourniment. i know not AU or even college sports related, but that was the first time i really saw the differnce of hd. sorry for the confusion.
Dr. HABOTN, if you want another woman's opinion...we have a plasma and really like it. I went to my parents' house for Christmas and they recently bought a Samsung LCD (one of the best ones they have - don't ask me the model#). The picture on it was PHENOMENAL! Our next tv will be an LCD.
nope miller. burn in was a problem eith early plasmas. i have had mine almost 4 years, there is no burn in. I recommend tha panasonic
if i played soccer i'd lead the league in handballs, redcards, and riot starting
We still got a 22 inch low def TV in our living room. HD is coveted but not prioritized in the michaeljanterri household.
Dear Leader...you think Kiffin needs bigger eggs? Es tremendo fricando
Agreed AUNugget. The World Cup looked great in HD, especially when I'm only use to watching futbol in standard definition unless it is champions league play.
Harrison- The Italian league will accept you today.
No burn-in issues on my plasma. HD to regular cable is like color to black-and-white. Of course with Charter, I sometimes wish for rabbit-ears but that would be another discussion.
I have a plasma and no burn in even though my teen left the TV on by mistake for over 12 hrs. It was on ESPN. The TV is in a dark room and the picture looks great.
depressedAUfan, Charter=SUCKS
charter worse than sucks, they have to improve just to suck. I want to switch to dish, but I don't want the hassle
Harrison,
What would be the hassle of switching to the dish? I switched from comcast to Direct and have zero complaints.
DISH in MTG = no local channels
yes, no local channels and the hassle of actually switching. waiting at home on my off day for 12 hours and all that
AHSAA rules pass the school fines for ejections to the parents of ejectees ... potential problem for Turbo Prop in soocer. Don't have a line item for red cards in Jet family budget.
Why no locals in Montgomery? Came Sunday afternoon and hooked me up within my 4 hour window.
DirectTV has local channels. I like it.
Also, if you want Charter for cheaper, you can do like I did when I lived in Auburn. I would always get a 3 or 6 month deal, and right before it expired, I would call and say I was canceling charter and switching to satellite. They always came back with a great deal. It is more hassle for them to cancel your Charter than just give you 20 bucks off a month. So I recommend all of you to do this.
(this trick also worked with aol back in the day, and I am sure it works elsewhere. Now that I actually have a job, I don't go through such extremes to get deals, but maybe I should. I have been paying full price on DirecTV way too long.)
Knology in the Gump works fine at Gov. Jet's Mansion.
... charter would have to improve just to suck.
amen
Jet - Prov. 22:6 does not apply to soccer? I ask so I'll know for my own future plans involving gatigercub, I anticipate him being a brute.
Aubie ...
You are correct. Charter is in that rarified place known as the "Sub-Suckage Zone."
I suggest you buy a splitter and a ladder.
Free cable for everyone! Everyone except my neighbor, that is.
GaTiger ... when I taught him to play like thug ... I mean, aggressively, I didn't realize we'd be on the hook for any cash.
May I also suggest a 200 foot orange cord to hook into your neighbor's utility room and a power strip to plug in major appliances to save on your electric bill.
DirecTV = delicious
local channels and local channels in HD with a very inexpensive, non intrusive HD antenna. DirecTV has more and will soon have WAY more HD channels than those dish people.
I'd also suggest making a duplicate of your neighbors house key so that when they're gone, your supply of beer is increased.
make a duplicate key - smarter and less labor intensive than befriending them. Silly Greg.
with the right computer/router, you can leech off of your neighbor's high speed internet connection, as well.
Who wants friends? When you can have HOTTIES!
Hey guys new here.. been a fan for a good while though...
hey Jay how some good info on our new Baseball coach and how the season is going to look this year... thanks
I'm not really sure how baseball relates to making good use of your neighbor's property but welcome anyway AUJunkie.
Auburn seems to be in a dead-zone for local channels on satellite. I was told by both Direct and Dish that I could not have locals in my area. I have heard rumors of people giving false addresses to gain access to certain local channels, but that seems like too much trouble if you have technical problems. So I am stuck in Charter Hell. Saban says hello by the way.
Plasma vs LCD
Plasma fans will point out that their picture's whites and blacks are better, and that they display fast movement better, their overall specs are better, and that the sets are a little less expensive than LCD.
LCD fans will point out that their sets don't have the room glare issue (strangely, Samsung chooses to have a glassy panel on their LCD's), and that their pictures are much brighter than that of LCD's.
I personally find the glare issue and the greater brightness of LCD to be the "winning" points in my decision to go with LCD.
If you take notice, the electronics stores tend not to display LCD and Palsma TV's next to each other. (I suspect for this reason) If you do see them side by side take note of the difference.
To heck with contrast ratio - the brighter picture - to me- looks much better.
I deleted Bryce Brown as a FB friend today. I refuse to be a part of his madness...unless he goes to Auburn, and then I'll add him back.
I notice one of my neighbor's behind my house always takes her dogs to the backyard of my next door neighbor and poops there (the dogs, not the neighbor). I have no idea if my next door neighbor is aware of this activity, but it is funny. Old ladies will do anything, man.
depressed - even with an antenna?
I have a 32" HDTV I bought last summer. I got it used for $175? Sound like a good deal? Well, kind of, but not as good as you may think. Yes, it is supposedly HDTV, but it has a CRT. It must way about 200# and is the only TV I have ever owned that I cannot pick up by myself. Yes, I am heavily into the HDTV world. If the TV was any older, it would be gas powered.
Plasma vs LCD
Plasma fans will point out that their picture's whites and blacks are better, and that they display fast movement better, their overall specs are better, and that the sets are a little less expensive than LCD.
LCD fans will point out that their sets don't have the room glare issue (strangely, Samsung chooses to have a glassy panel on their LCD's), and that their pictures are much brighter than that of Plasma'sd
I personally find the glare issue and the greater brightness of LCD to be the "winning" points in my decision to go with LCD. My LCD is 120 mhz, and honestly, my little brain is unable to detect any difference with motion smoothness.
If you take notice, the electronics stores tend not to display LCD and Palsma TV's next to each other. (I suspect for this reason) If you do see them side by side take note of the difference. It is very noticable.
To heck with contrast ratio - the brighter picture - to me- looks much better.
Just got a Sony 52" LCD there is absolutely no glare.. Man it unbelievable how crisp and clear the screen is especially playing bluray
Welcome to the HABOTN, Junkie.
I own a tv that is neither plasma or LCD. It is actually made up of millions of ants who have been painted various colors. They receive the signal and sprint to the correct spot on the screen on demand. It is a pretty blurry picture, but it is a great conversation piece when people visit.
Speaking of dogs Michael, if anyone is interested in an Akita free to a good home, then please come to my house where I'll then point you across my fence to my neighbor's yard and their Akita.
I saw the dog whisperer totally own a RED ZONE akita in one episode. It was awesome.
The ants thing reminds me of a book (fiction) about pro football - "Semi Tough" I believe?
Author made reference to a pregame show where red, white, and blue painted / trained doves overflew the stadium in the formation of an American flag.
Monica- I have been told different things by different people regarding reception in my area by antenna. The catch is to find out the antenna has to be installed and they guarantee nothing. I thought about doing it myself, but with some trees around me, I feel like I would need a tall pole to mount an antenna. Plus, living in a subdivision I sort of hate to put an antenna up. I know it is allowed by law, but there are no other ones around that I have seen. Do you have any suggestions?
The antenna I'm talking about is installed inside and it's really small. There are some good websites I have bookmarked at home. Greg also got great advice from our local Radio Shack guys.
What a wonderful quote by Charles Goldberg, and it provides a challenge to all you Habotn members. Summarize the Tony Franklin Experience in 11 words or less.
"Then there's Franklin. Remember him? He was hired as Middle Tennessee's offensive coordinator Thursday. We wanted to read about it, so we went to the Middle Tennessee athletic web site. Their PR department wrote an 852-word story about Franklin. Eleven of the 852 words were devoted to his days at Auburn.
That seems about right."
J-Z ...
Bryce remains my friend until he signs elsewhere ... then he's done like dinner.
my neighbor has cats. they sleep on the roof of my car (it's a ragtop, so they leave fur) and treat my front yard like their litter box.
Jet, from what I have read, Bryce Brown has the potential to become the next Maurice Claurette.
The missing 11 words ... my guess ...
A collision of dumbassitude and ego, Franklin spontaneously combusted at Auburn.
I await your guesses.
Michael, that's funny about the old lady and her dog pooping in the neighbors yard.
When my son was little, I taught him how to pee off the back deck at night... until my wife hit the flood lights in mid stream.
Steve, as I recall, Maurice won a national championship before he left.
Is Maurice in jail yet?
Wow...that didn't make me feel overly good about these croots.
BUZZ KILL!!!
time for some HABOTN radio???!!! sweet.
Jet, I think Bryce is looking to skip the Maurice college experience and head straight to the pro ranks. I read an article where he may want $5 million over 3 years from a CFL team. This is hilarious, because the CFL teams have salary limits of $4.2 million per team per year, so Bryce (I don't do college) Brown is basically asking for more than the salary of the entire team for a year after every 3 years. I also understand he is a candidate for a roll in the next sequel to Dumb & Dumber.
We're having some technical difficulties that may or may not permit the broadcast to occur today.
I'll keep you updated.
OH NOOOOOO!!!!!
Get the Plasma! Best bang for you buck. The new technology has basically eliminated burn in issues and glare.
I wonder what Coach Kiffin will have to say if David Oku signs with Auburn? Is he a man? Can he take it?
i've got a 37" LCD and been pretty pleased for the past year.
comeon jay g fix it!
Definitely a bummer.
What did bags do now?
FOR GOODNESS SAKES, PLUG HIM IN!!!!!!!
for the 58 inch Panasonic Plasma, Amazon has a great price right now with free shipping. Also receives great reviews.

I bought my 42" Panasonic from Amazon and when the price went down 2 weeks later they credited my card for the difference.
STOP THE MADNESS!!!

Tony Franklin at Auburn in eleven words:
"He came. He saw. He lost; his cool, respect, games, job."
Any questions?
Sullivan013
Sully pops in once per month and unloads stuff like that.
