Can you feel it?

Hey everyone. As many of you all know, today represents the first day of spring football. Calm down. I know you're excited about practice ... despite what Allen Iverson might tell you.

So what's the haps?

It depends on how you see things. This is the first (documented) practice situation involving these players and these new coaches. Are you wondering how Gene Chizik handles business on the field? How about Gus Malzahn and Ted Roof Rusted?

Maybe some players?

Tell you what. I'll go with the Five Things That Interest Me going into the next month of football. Then you can counter with your interests in the comments section. We'll go from there.
  • Chizik's demeanor: My best guess is that he's a hands-on guy who will be getting after people on the field. That would be a major deviation from the way Tommy Tuberville handled business.

  • Quarterbacks: It's the same-ol, same-ol ... but it's still an issue. Has Kodi Burns streamlined his footwork? Can Chris Todd throw more authoritatively with a surgically repaired shoulder? Is Barrett Trotter legit? Can Neil Caudle stop throwing balls to the defense?

  • PPL: I was intrigued by Phillip Pierre-Louis last season. I thought he could emerge as a serious contributor. Then he suffered a season-ending knee injury on the first play of the 2008 season. He claims to be back. Can he still be a game-breaking threat?

  • Onterio McCalebb: They think the freshman, at Auburn via prep school, can be a Percy Harvin-type element in Malzahn's offense. I want to see this kid myself. I want to see how refined he is with the ball in his hands.

  • Organization: I'll be interested to see how things operate. I watched Tuberville & Co.'s approach for 10 seasons. I'm sure Chizik, Inc., will handle things much differently ... with drills, with time dedicated to each drill, with time allocated to special teams, etc.

SCHEUDLE UPDATE: Chizik with be speaking with reporters at 4 p.m. CDT. Practice begins at 7. Video will be allowed during a 30-minute window. I should be able to get that broken down and posted to the blog around 8:30.

I can't help but feel like a Bammer when reading this. You/we are getting excited about practice. We have a basketball GAME tonight, a very important GAME tonight. This mentality of "oh, football news, nothing else matters!" is why basketball can't ever be hugely successful at Auburn.

My biggest question in spring practice is who will our coaching scapegoat be this year without Greg Knox to blame for any the receiving/passing game problems?

10:12 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

I think there is a little added excitement this spring as there is a new HC and staff in place. I think people(including myself) are curious to see what changes, for better or for worse, are put into place. I would imagine the players feel some of this also.

I am intrigued by this year's addition of spring practice. I just we come out of spring practice without injuries and with a starting QB.

I would hope that if Trotter is even close to being legit, that we bite bullet and go with him this year. Unfortunately for Todd, I just don't think his surgically repaired shoulder is going to be ready. I hope it is, because in my estimation, he is the best QB on the roster when it comes to playing the position. I am trying hard not to prejudge and be biased Kodi Burns, but the irrational love of him last year makes it hard to become enamored with him this year.

I would hope Neil Caudle would do better, but, I think, he is similiar to Kodi Burns in that we have seen both of them being all that they can be. I don't think there is much left to bring out unless he has had some ephiphany moment in the offseason and will quit throwing it to the other team.

I hope none of the OL or RBs get injured during spring ball.

I hope Chizik will be hands on during spring ball and the upcoming summer practice, but back off some during the season. I think the players need this kind of coach right now. He appears to me to be a coach that will be hard on his players but defend them until the end. I hope they see that as well.

I plan on being at the game tonight before going incommunicado for a few days. I will be monitoring all the basketball games Thursday through Sunday simualtaneously through my bank of monitors with real time statistics.

RK, I think Malzahn is thought of as one of the top OC's in the college game. There have been a lot of questions regarding talent, scheme, coaching etc at AU. It will be interesting to see how he uses the players on the current roster in his offensive scheme. I am worried that he is going to have to work with a very thin(depth-wise) OL. I hope the O-line play doesn't limit his play-calling ability.

I hope AU basketball does well. The folks that like it should wholely support it. Complaining to the football folks is not supporting basketball.

I can watch the women's games b/c the refs call those games closer to the actual rules.

In the men's game: "boxing out" resembles a scrum, refs call travelling when a defender pushes the ballhandler causing his foot to slip, yet let a ballhandler take 3 steps on the way to a photogenic dunk, A posted up offensive player is allowed to shuffle his feet as long as he is attempting to move the ball around or shoot, yet if he gets pushed and slips his foot then travelling is called.

I watch AU when I can, but in general that game is not for me.

10:47 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I think I'd like the same thing from the basketball team that I'd like from the football team (no not the choppy feet thing) I just want them to look like they know what's going on, and not look lost. Cash money says he reads blogs. It's the same piety you Montgomerians hear on the WMSP morning show. They rip reporters, rip the Advertiser, rip blogs ... then read from them verbatim. They're certainly not going to spent their time with tedious endeavors like reporting the news themselves.

They'll just learn from real reporters ... and occasionally pass that work off as their own in an effort to pimp their "credibility."

I echo Denny's thought that I hope Barrett is upwardly mobile enough to invest him for the near term.

As for irrational love for Kodi, I don't know if I was guilty of such, but was definitely frustrated with a QB that couldn't throw the ball over the umpire's head without serious air under it.

I don't know if Kodi is the answer this year. If he is, hopefully it will be because he's made incredible strides.

Either way, I've got to believe we'll be more function as a team because of the staff configuration.

All the changes will make for an interesting spring, just too bad you will pretty much have to be with the team to see it. Tubs was the first coach at Auburn to really open things up to the public. Bowden had closed practices and I'm pretty sure that Dye did too. Bowden would assign managers to check for people watching thru fences and what not, he was that paranoid.

Just glad to be back on a subject that I am familiar with :)!

For Your Reading Pleasure (or dismay), the following is Hoopie's Guide to Spring Football Fandom:

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SPRING PRACTICE:

Spring Practice is the where football fundamentals are taught and developed. Early Fall Camp brushes up on and reinforces fundamentals, but if these aren’t developed in the Spring, it’s too late to do it in the Fall.

A new coaching staff has the additional task to teach the new offense/defensive schemes. The scheme fundamentals and only some of the fine points are taught in the Spring. The fine points of the schemes are added in the Fall.

The new coaches have to begin to evaluate all of the player’s abilities and where to fit them into the new schemes. This is a good opportunity for late bloomer type players, b/c pre-conceived abilities don’t exist.

WATCHING SCRIMMAGES:

Notice basic: blocking, tackling, catching, throwing, coordination, body control and reaction/decision skills

Don’t get hung up on: offense or defensive play-calling successes, failures or inconsistencies.

In the A Day scrimmage, the defense will probably be very vanilla, without stunts or blitzes. The offense should run through a variety of plays, but few, if any, trick plays. Although this is a new coaching staff, they will probably do like last season’s coaches during the A Day game and allow the offense to run through the plays without a lot of special defense to handle. Defense is easier to teach and would normally be ahead of the offense anyway, in fact, given our offense history this is probably even more the case.

In particular, I will look forward to see if some of our most glaring offensive fundamentals problems are improved: OL mobility, OL timing, entire range of WR fundamentals, QB ability to go through progressions.

Most folks were pumped last Spring that we were making very good offensive “progress” and we know how what happened……so don’t get excited or bummed b/c of the A Day scrimmage.

12:32 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Eddie, what is your take on open practices? Are they a distraction to the players? I loved going to watch the open practices, so I was disappointed in the closed practice policy. Fundamentals are important and must be taught in the spring. Teaching the team all new terms is also important during the spring.

But the one thing you cannot see, touch or feel is team chemistry, how they feel about each other and the coaching staff. Do they understand the players next to them both there strengths and weaknesses.

This is somehow instilled in them as they work hard to achieve one goal, to win every game.

I hope this coaching staff has this ability whether they realize it at this time or not.

12:59 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- Bowden had the typical Napolean complex. He was scared of everything. If you had practice tape, you had to log it in and out and if it went missing, which it did one time during bama week, then the other team stole it!

I don't have a problem with paranoid coaches. Look at the New England Patriots. Don't you think Saban is capable of using unethical spying techniques? That sort of thing has been going on since the beginning of football. Coaches who have been around know it happens at every level. It's like complaining about metal detectors at an airport because you have never seen anyone bring a gun onto a plane before.

Sure some coaches' techniques are overkill, but better safe than sorry.

1:23 PM

Also, I don't consider banning reporters to be a necessary step to keep spies out or anything, but I understand the reasoning as far as keeping the things that happen in practice in house.

I don't know how you can say you've seen the best you are going to get out of Kodi. He clearly was confused and nervous out there on the field last year. Will that go away with better coaching/better surrounding staff? I have no clue, but if it does he has the tools to be a good player.

I'm not gaga over him, but if his flashes of brilliance could become the norm I would obviously love to have him in our backfield.

That said I think having Trotter already at a level that can take the field is our best option.

Either way I am ready for football season to start. I really wish Pro would run in the spring so we could have football year round. The off season sucks. Oh well baseball season starts soon so lots of Rays games for me.

Good luck to the men tonight.

Jay,

Here a few questions to start?

1. What are the odds Chizik rips his shirt off ala Kiffin and breaks the podium at todays pre-meeting?

2. What are the odds Lebo wears a terrible tie and shirt combo to go with the last few weeks dressings? I didnt know Goody's had a going out of business sale for Easter

3. Also, Is all of the money for the basketball arena already obtained or is it half in cash and half in Colonial stock? If so we could be in trouble, it would be concrete walls and a dirt pit if the $ runs out, might be kinda cool, like a Roman arena...

I'm not sure who would be the best choice out of this group. The big IF is Todd's shoulder. If it is healthy, then I think he's the best choice unless Burns suddenly learns patience and calms his nerves.

I haven't seen enough of Trotter to know where he fits in.

I agree, but I found that a little shocking from Mr. Madden. Then again. he was in uniform (why he didn't change after the game like a normal person is just as curious). Pretty much anything is acceptable behavior when wearing a baseball uniform.

also, I kinda enjoy Kiffin. I'm sure I'll end up hating him like I do Spurrier, but I still find both humorous.

Jay G, I don't think I understand your "work in a 9 by 9 room with no window" analogy. They play football outside, so you don't need windows, and there are a ton of people on the team and coaching staff and support staff. So you know, no one is lonely.

And I must admit, if a reporter sat down and watched me all day, I might find it a tad distracting. I am sure I would get used to it though.

So, to me, the coach has to make a choice between giving more info to the fans through allowing the media to see more and shutting them out to make sure their team is in more of a protected bubble. No right or wrong, just choices.

rasslin' occurs in the backyard between friends after much alcohol is consumed while the other drunks watch and throw beer on you.

my only concern this spring is OL.
if they can't block, the RBs can't run, the QBs can't throw, and WRs will not run routes.
it will be nice to not have and OL coach who has already pigeon-holed all of his players before anything is proven on the practice fields.

would this lineup bring cheers or jeers?

RT A. MCCAIN
RG J. COOPER or B. EDDINS
C R. PUGH
LG B. ISOM
LT L ZIEMBA

My five big Spring Issues?

1. Secondary- Is Aaron Savages knee healed? If not, when. Will our Mike McNeil ever learn to hit anyone or cover? he had a bad soph slump

2. Has anyone seen the ghost of Raven Gray? How is his knee? Is he on campus?

3. Will Gabe McKenzie stay at DE or will he come back to TE, especially with Trott recovering from a knee surgery

4. Will any of the freshman from last years signing class make an impact this spring? Any of them bulked up?

5. Will Ben Tate have a break out year?

I know for a fact that Slusher is dumber than rocks and a friend of mine said they have no clue how he got on campus as he good not start in the campus intramural league. they guy that will have to have a big season for the O to get headed in the right direction is Deangelo Benton. he can take some pressure off of the other WRs and should be ready to play being three years removed from high school. he should be the best WR on the team day one if we are to believe the hype and how PO'd the corndogs were when he left the state.

4:18 PM

Jaybar and Slusher were tight. According to Jaybar, one time Ensminger got really mad about a player who didn't show up to practice, but then it turned out the player had season ending surgery. Jaybar had the scoop, man.

PDWT, that is the point I try to make discussing AU recruiting with SteveFC. The rankings don't look so bad, but if you look deeper, there has been a stunning attrition rate of TOP players(at least they were supposed to be).
