A nice honor for Drew Smith

Hey everyone.

Drew Smith, a walk-on senior on the Auburn basketball team, today won a Brad Davis SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship.

He was one of two SEC peeps (the other being South Carolina hoopster Brionna Dickerson) to get the scholarship, which is worth $6,000.

Here is a run-down of Smith's accomplishments:
Smith is a four-year letter winner for the Tiger basketball team and is on target to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences in May.

The Trussville, Ala. native has been an Auburn Academic Top Tiger and a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll for three years. He is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the National College Athlete Honor Society, the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Smith has also been the recipient of the Freshman Presidential Scholarship, the Valedictorian Scholarship, the Auburn College of Sciences and Mathematics Academic Scholarship. He received the Tiger basketball team’s Academic Achievement Award in 2008.

In the community, Smith has been active through his work as a four-year member of Auburn’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and participating in various other activities. He has served as a counselor and camp pastor for the First Baptist Church of Trussville’s Youth Retreat, been a mentor for children from Project Up-Lift and Boys and Girls Clubs, organized toy drives for Toys for Tots and took part in activities for youth at local YMCA camps.

Smith has also served on his Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ leadership team, taken part in canned food drives and participated in Coaches 4 Cancer. He founded and led a ministry for local students and the community at Auburn entitled, “The Backyard.”
The award is named for Davis, an SEC official who died of cancer in 2006 at age 49. He was a cool dude who often served as the instant-replay czar at Auburn football games.

  3. Great article on Campbell, Wartiger. Thanks for sharing. Dear Leader, aren't you supposed to be firing a missle?

    ReplyDelete
  4. That's a nice thing to reward Drew for his 4 years of service.

Too bad they don't have a "raise the basketball team's GPA by a whole point award"

You can really tell that Jason Campbell is an Auburn graduated..what a class act!!

  8. so that kid is pretty busy huh? Congrats Drew Smith...WAR EAGLE!!

  9. I echo ehyou's sentiments. Also, I'm looking forward to reading the Chandler Brooks story.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Gradulations Drew... No, Seriously, Congratulations to Drew. Based on that bio he definitely deserved it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. anybody know anything about the book Michael Vick is writing? should be interesting...

    ReplyDelete
  12. What? Everyone's not celebrating pants-free Friday?

  13. Books that will never be published:

    No.1

How to be an Upstanding Citizen and an Ambassador for Your Sport, By Michael Vick.

  14. Oh yea!! I forgot...oops..sorry

  15. I'm wearing shorts, does that count?

  16. No. 2

    ReplyDelete
  17. I wish Drew would have taken a shot there at the end of the LSU game. I wanted him to drain a three.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I believe the technical term for those is short pants, so, unfortunately, they count as pants.

You gotta let your gauche breathe!

    ReplyDelete
  19. the problem with the Jimmy johns book is it wouldn't make any money b/c the text book 5 have stolen all the copies...

    ReplyDelete
  20. They are mesh gym shorts, so lots of air flow.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I will be interested to see if Vick plays in the NFL again..so far Roger Gadell (if that's how you spell it) has been kind of had a zero tolerance policy on misbehavior..

    ReplyDelete
  22. five whole minutes of silence..what?! you people working or something?...it's kinda funny..my brother got laid off and now he's got another job at Wal mart and then 6 months later I get laid off and am now collecting that goverment check and I make more than he does..ridiculous!!

  23. That's the New Deal working in your favor Wartiger.

  24. Wartiger, it is a slow morning. The usual suspects are all actually being productive.

I'm here. I just haven't had anything to add.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Vick will be allowed to play again unless or until he does something else, just like Pacman Jones. His return will boost ratings and profits so he will be given another chance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anonymous9:49 AM

I think Vick and everyone involved should rot in jail.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The Vick case will be interesting. With Pacman Jones there wasn't any legal action against him in a conviction sense prior to his suspension. Vick having been convicted of multiple felonies and serving time, will Goodell give him time already served or slap him with another punishment?

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's a shame that HABOTN isn't web cam enabled. It could make pants free friday a lot more entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  30. what team do you think Dan..won't be the Falcons..bout gurantee that..

Seanzie- The New Deal..what a trip...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dallas or Oakland for Vick. Everyone else is too smart for something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Its possible he could have to sit out a year, maybe "prove" he is rehabilitated, but eventually he will be back. Speaking of felonies, alledgedly, has the league commented on Donte Stallworth yet?

    ReplyDelete
  33. that makes perfect sense..I'd bet Oakland..whatever happened to Jamarcus Russell..doesn't he play for Oakland?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah Jamarcus is still with Oakland...I don't think the league has offered comment, the Browns said something about being saddened...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Has anyone ever stayed at the Marriot in Point Clear, me and the missus are headed down there for an extended weekend...thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Seanzie, the organizations are dumb enough, but they have qbs. It would have to be a team desperate for a qb.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Gotta run out for a minute.

    ReplyDelete
  38. can't say that I have Seanzie..I am will be staying at the Holiday inn on 280 tonight...I am going to be at Saturdays scrimmage coaching the guys up and installing my new high powered offense...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jay-I don't know if it's a big deal or not but haven't you been disabling the auto play once you start a new thread?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Congrats on the recognition and promotion Seanzie.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I went to high school and played youth baseball with Drew. I consider him a good friend. Really, you wont find a better person.

  43. If by the Marriot in Point Clear, I've stayed there several times. It is one of the most relaxing places on earth. Don't miss the breakfast buffet with the crabmeat omelet.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Seanzie - I haven't stayed there in YEARS, but Jet did recently. I love that area. You can't go wrong.

The Grand at Point Clear is a great place! It is a very secluded and relaxing little getaway.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous10:26 AM

    D. Miller, I wish!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Miller- i had tickets to the Masters in 2007 to go, but we had a vacation planned that same week. I gave them to my dad and brother, I still regretr that to this day

    ReplyDelete

    D. Miller, have you played golf there? The course looks beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  56. At Augusta?
That's one my lifelong dreams!! I doubt I will ever get so lucky.

oh... you mean at Point Clear? No, I haven't had the opportunity to yet... I have heard teh course is nice though, and would like to play it next time we go down there.

Do you have a few extra clubs in case one (or more) end up in the bay?

    ReplyDelete

Are you going to let your wife drive the cart and drink beer?

    ReplyDelete
  62. The wife has thrown me to the wolves and is making me play with my father in law and her uncles. And these guys aren't drinkers. It's going to be a long day.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonymous10:42 AM

Well, that's just not nice. Not nice at all.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I haven't hit a golf ball in about 7 months...I wanted to hit the range a couple times this week but the weather had other plans. Looks like I'm going out cold.

    ReplyDelete
  65. the range should be open today and tomorrow... when do you head out?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Today immediately after work...it's about 6 hours from the ATL, will probably take longer with the traffic. I'll try to sneak out tomorrow at some point.

I think the trail card gets you a break on the fees. If not, there are some "state rates" that you can get pretty easily. Lemme know and I'll hook you up with a link.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Anonymous11:06 AM

j-z, thanks! We can always use a break on green fees. Although, what I was talking about was the hotel rates! The cheapest room was over $300/night.

    is that a word.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous11:09 AM

I've never heard it, digger. Is that a made up word like Monica her dirty sister's "laugterbation"?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Anonymous11:10 AM

    oops laughterbation

    ReplyDelete
  74. Unfortunantly it is.
They seem to have a ball though.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Who came up with laughterbation? I'll bet it was Monica.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous11:18 AM

Michael, you would be correct. It was she and her dirty sister.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sounds like someone needs to get the hose...although she'd probably like it.

Yikes! Big goings-on in Binghamton, NY

    ReplyDelete
  79. Luv, thanks for the heads-up, that isn't going to end well.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Anonymous11:24 AM

I fear you are correct, Seanzie.

    ReplyDelete
  81. CNN) -- Authorities are at the scene of a building in Binghamton, New York, where there are "multiple" shooting victims and hostages are being held, a county spokesman said.

Broome County Director of Emergency Services Brett Chellis said there is an "active" shooting situation at the American Civic Association, and that several law enforcement agencies are at the scene.

Chellis did not provide numbers of victims or hostages, and had no further details.

Pressconnects.com, a local media Web site, said at least four people were shot and about 20 people had been taken hostage.

Binghamton is about 75 miles south of Syracuse, New York.

According to the United Way of Broome County Web site, the civic association assists immigrants and refugees with immigration and personal counseling, resettlement, citizenship, family reunification.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Anonymous11:25 AM

the guy entered the building with a hig-powered rifle and just started shooting...

    ReplyDelete
  83. Ok, this is going to sound stupid, but what rifle isn't high powered in close quarters?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous11:30 AM

I know NOTHING about guns, but I see your point, Seanzie.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Anonymous11:30 AM

I was just repeating what the guy on the Fox News channel said.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Speaking of point clear, there was just a big sewage spill in fairhope. Seanzie, you guys should make the drive over to orange beach one night and have some dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  87. WOW, binghamton isn't far from where i lived in PA. There's just crazies walkin round, ever see that movie "falling down". People gotta know how to relax and shrug all that stuff off. Jeesh.

  88. Luv,

Would $169 per night including a round of golf for 2 fit into your plans?

BinOBA, I always say, "What's wrong with this world??" Things were like this when we were kids...were they?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Luv - I remember some radicals taking over a radio station in downtown gump in the late '60's or early '70's. I believe there were some deaths and definitely some hostages.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Luv,

    You have mail.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anonymous11:49 AM

But, they didn't happen nearly as often, did they?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Gotta watch out for the crazies. They are everywhere. Never know when someone is gonna flip. Time for the drive to work, yall take care, have a good day, enjoy the BEAUTIFUL weather, if ya have some. WAR DAMN EAGLE!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Luv, it happening once is way too often. It seems like it's happening more and more now, but is that a function of modern day news, or is it there are just more crazy folks?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Anonymous11:50 AM

    Thanks, j-z!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Anonymous11:51 AM

That's what I'm trying to figure out, Seanzie.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Seanzie - yes and yes.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Anonymous11:54 AM

and, Seanzie, you are so right about one time being too many.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Our society is constantly being fueled by fear and hatred. It has always been like this. The only thing that has changed is the target of that fear and hatred and mass media's ability to feed it to more people.

    ReplyDelete
  104. BigCat just stole my reply and put his excellent mark on it. Well done.

  106. Luv,

Sometimes they have specials for Ross Bridge too.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Anonymous12:13 PM

I've never played there 'cause I heard it's always crowded and there's always bottlenecks.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Bottlenecks & golf. Reminds me of Lagoon Park in the gump back in the high school and college days. On Saturdays, you could count on spending 5 or 6 hours there trying to get in a round.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Anonymous12:20 PM

We try to go early in the morning to avoid that.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I've played Ross Bridge. It's worth the waits. I am actually playing it next Saturday

    ReplyDelete
  111. I was going to have my wedding reception at Ross Bridge...but the girl there was less than helpful and that doesn't sit with with me.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Anonymous12:24 PM

Harrison, if you've never played at Ballantrae, you need to. I love that course.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Jet's Travelogue ...

    1. Go eat with BinOBA ... haven't done it yet, but I will.
    2. Stay at the Grand Hotel -- J-Z's right, the breakfast buffet with the crabmeat omelet and cheese grits are worth killin' for.
    3. The golf at the Grand is playable. It's enjoyable resort golf.
    4. Lunch in Fairhope at Panini Pete's.
    5. Shop in Fairhope
    6. If there multiple nights, then eat one night in the Grand Dining Room, but be sure to eat with BinOBA.
    7. Doc's Seafood Shack is a wonderful seafood dive for oysters, shrimp, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  114. That is true of most RTJ courses. There are a lot of folks who try to play from the tee boxes way in the back who have no business doing so.

Sometime I'll tell you the story about playing the Judge in Prattville behind a group of Hyundai execs.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I play from the Whites and I'm proud of it.

    ReplyDelete
  116. jz, do you have the golf hookup at RTJ in Opelika? I'm headed that way next week.....

    ReplyDelete
  117. Doc's is the BOMB! The old one though, not the touristy one. We go every year when we head to Ft. Morgan and our waitress remembers our kid's names every year. Love that place. Royal Reds....yummy yum yum

    ReplyDelete
  118. Luv, One of my best friends lived on ballantrae for years and i never played it. I will one day

    ReplyDelete
  119. j-z, "Hyundai execs" are the slowest golfers in the world

    ReplyDelete
  120. The trail card is the best deal going. The cushy golf rates come with a hotel stay attached otherwise and then only on certain weekends.

    ReplyDelete
  121. j-z - I believe that's true of those execs regardless of the course. I got stuck behind them in the gump before their plant officially opened. It was bad enough that the Pro let them tee off with 5, but they were awful golfers, very slow, and one of them must've thought he was Sergio with the way he was constantly regripping. Jerks.

Seanzie - more often than not, I'm playing from the whites.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Nice catch there Harrison.

    ReplyDelete
  123. my grandfather who was in the "hyundai" war, really hates being behind them. it is hilarious

    ReplyDelete
  124. I've had them tee off with 5 and then take 2 or 3 mulligans on every hole and refuse to let anyone play through. We finally just drove into them on the last 4 holes.

    ReplyDelete
  125. That's why joining a private club is worth every penny.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I went to play a round at River Run in the Gump one day by myself, and got paired with one of the Hyundai execs and his wife. That was the longest round of golf I have ever played.

    ReplyDelete
  127. The Washington Examiner is reporting that the Cutler deal with the Redskins fell through because the Broncos did not want Jason Campbell. Their QB preference was Brady Quinn, then Kyle Orton, they were not interested in Campbell. Taking off the AU glasses, are those two QB's better than Campbell? I just don't see it.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Harrison - one of the last times I played golf with my grandfather, he must've peed 3 times on the front and he wasn't a drinker. The point of saying this is that on the course there was only one restroom per side, so one pee was next to a tree and another was right there in the fairway.

After telling my parent's this story, I believe it wasn't long afterwards that my mother and her sibs had a sort of golfing intervention with the old guy. He was funny and I still miss him.

    ReplyDelete
  129. It goes back to Star Power, Jason Campbell has had just as much success as Jay Cutler. Brady Quinn is still a question mark, why anyone would want Kyle Orton is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I don't think I answered the question, the answer is, no they aren't better than Campbell.

    ReplyDelete
  131. So, can you make the private club in the tub?

    ReplyDelete
  132. gatiger- he still plays some, and i still play with him some. He used to shoot his age (78 at age 78), but he's slowed down a lot now. He does pee alot though. Come to think of it I pee out there a lot too, but I drink

    ReplyDelete
  133. So today we have a crazy guy killing people in New York. Tomorrow another crazy guy is going to fire a rocket possibly...Me, I'll sleep in and chill by the pool.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Reading y'all talk about golf looks like this to me:

Unless you are into tea time w/ pinkies up and overpriced art and women's fashions and food. go on the causeway to Ed' Seafood Shed and get the yo' mamma's platter for two. Doc's is very good too if you head toward the beach.

If Jet thinks he has a chance of Mrs. Jet being "cooperative" on the trip, a shopping trip in Fairhope is a small price to pay.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Jet - that's funny. When I go shopping with the missus (cooperative or not), I take a book and the iPod because I'm sitting down waiting for her. My only real purpose in being there is to haul stuff around.

    ReplyDelete
  140. "cooperative" made me spew water onto my nice little notes and laptop!!!

    You are too much.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I'm proud to say I have never asked Greg to hold my purse or to "go shopping" with me.

    ReplyDelete
  142. GaTiger ...

Of course, our last trip down there was for our 20th anniversary, and it was the weekend that the Chiz hiring broke.

Apparently, I was deemed to have spent too much time on the Blackberry on the phone, and checking HABOTN.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Monica,

That's like folding with pocket aces.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I was at the Tanger Outlets in Sevierville Tennessee when the Chizik newse broke. I got yelled at myself for being on the phone the rest of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Wasn't your 20th anniversary weekend, Seanzie.

    Take my word for it.

    ReplyDelete
  146. No "cooperation", Jet?

    ReplyDelete
  147. For Greg's sake, I won't explain it.

  161. Just thought I'd share this since we were talking about Tate's speed not too long ago:
