Drew Smith, a walk-on senior on the Auburn basketball team, today won a Brad Davis SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship.
He was one of two SEC peeps (the other being South Carolina hoopster Brionna Dickerson) to get the scholarship, which is worth $6,000.
Here is a run-down of Smith's accomplishments:
Smith is a four-year letter winner for the Tiger basketball team and is on target to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences in May.The award is named for Davis, an SEC official who died of cancer in 2006 at age 49. He was a cool dude who often served as the instant-replay czar at Auburn football games.
The Trussville, Ala. native has been an Auburn Academic Top Tiger and a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll for three years. He is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the National College Athlete Honor Society, the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Smith has also been the recipient of the Freshman Presidential Scholarship, the Valedictorian Scholarship, the Auburn College of Sciences and Mathematics Academic Scholarship. He received the Tiger basketball team’s Academic Achievement Award in 2008.
In the community, Smith has been active through his work as a four-year member of Auburn’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and participating in various other activities. He has served as a counselor and camp pastor for the First Baptist Church of Trussville’s Youth Retreat, been a mentor for children from Project Up-Lift and Boys and Girls Clubs, organized toy drives for Toys for Tots and took part in activities for youth at local YMCA camps.
Smith has also served on his Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ leadership team, taken part in canned food drives and participated in Coaches 4 Cancer. He founded and led a ministry for local students and the community at Auburn entitled, “The Backyard.”

ReplyDeleteGreat article on Campbell, Wartiger. Thanks for sharing. Dear Leader, aren't you supposed to be firing a missle?
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice thing to reward Drew for his 4 years of service.
ReplyDeleteToo bad they don't have a "raise the basketball team's GPA by a whole point award"
NO DROPS!....REPOST:
ReplyDeleteYou can really tell that Jason Campbell is an Auburn graduated..what a class act!!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/02/AR2009040202218.html?hpid=topnews
Nice article JGT. Thanks for making us aware of fine Auburn folks that we may not otherwise have been.
ReplyDeleteThe HABOTN is much more enjoyable when I'm not wearing pants.
ReplyDeleteso that kid is pretty busy huh? Congrats Drew Smith...WAR EAGLE!!
ReplyDeleteI echo ehyou's sentiments. Also, I'm looking forward to reading the Chandler Brooks story.
ReplyDeleteTMI j-z
ReplyDeleteGradulations Drew... No, Seriously, Congratulations to Drew. Based on that bio he definitely deserved it.
ReplyDeleteanybody know anything about the book Michael Vick is writing? should be interesting...
ReplyDeleteWhat? Everyone's not celebrating pants-free Friday?
ReplyDeleteBooks that will never be published:
ReplyDeleteNo.1
How to be an Upstanding Citizen and an Ambassador for Your Sport, By Michael Vick.
Oh yea!! I forgot...oops..sorry
ReplyDeleteI'm wearing shorts, does that count?
ReplyDeletebetter now...
ReplyDeleteNo. 2
ReplyDeleteHow to Start a Side Business in the Parking Lot of your Current Employer, By Jimmy Johns.
I wish Drew would have taken a shot there at the end of the LSU game. I wanted him to drain a three.
ReplyDeleteI believe the technical term for those is short pants, so, unfortunately, they count as pants.
ReplyDeleteYou gotta let your gauche breathe!
the problem with the Jimmy johns book is it wouldn't make any money b/c the text book 5 have stolen all the copies...
ReplyDeleteThey are mesh gym shorts, so lots of air flow.
ReplyDeleteI will be interested to see if Vick plays in the NFL again..so far Roger Gadell (if that's how you spell it) has been kind of had a zero tolerance policy on misbehavior..
ReplyDeletefive whole minutes of silence..what?! you people working or something?...it's kinda funny..my brother got laid off and now he's got another job at Wal mart and then 6 months later I get laid off and am now collecting that goverment check and I make more than he does..ridiculous!!
ReplyDeleteThat's the New Deal working in your favor Wartiger.
ReplyDeleteWartiger, it is a slow morning. The usual suspects are all actually being productive.
ReplyDeleteI'm here. I just haven't had anything to add.
ReplyDeleteVick will be allowed to play again unless or until he does something else, just like Pacman Jones. His return will boost ratings and profits so he will be given another chance.
ReplyDeleteI think Vick and everyone involved should rot in jail.
ReplyDeleteThe Vick case will be interesting. With Pacman Jones there wasn't any legal action against him in a conviction sense prior to his suspension. Vick having been convicted of multiple felonies and serving time, will Goodell give him time already served or slap him with another punishment?
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that HABOTN isn't web cam enabled. It could make pants free friday a lot more entertaining.
ReplyDeletewhat team do you think Dan..won't be the Falcons..bout gurantee that..
ReplyDeleteSeanzie- The New Deal..what a trip...
Dallas or Oakland for Vick. Everyone else is too smart for something like that.
ReplyDeleteIts possible he could have to sit out a year, maybe "prove" he is rehabilitated, but eventually he will be back. Speaking of felonies, alledgedly, has the league commented on Donte Stallworth yet?
ReplyDeletethat makes perfect sense..I'd bet Oakland..whatever happened to Jamarcus Russell..doesn't he play for Oakland?
ReplyDeleteYeah Jamarcus is still with Oakland...I don't think the league has offered comment, the Browns said something about being saddened...
ReplyDeleteHas anyone ever stayed at the Marriot in Point Clear, me and the missus are headed down there for an extended weekend...thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Seanzie, the organizations are dumb enough, but they have qbs. It would have to be a team desperate for a qb.
ReplyDeleteGotta run out for a minute.
ReplyDeletecan't say that I have Seanzie..I am will be staying at the Holiday inn on 280 tonight...I am going to be at Saturdays scrimmage coaching the guys up and installing my new high powered offense...
ReplyDeleteJay-I don't know if it's a big deal or not but haven't you been disabling the auto play once you start a new thread?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the recognition and promotion Seanzie.
ReplyDeleteI went to high school and played youth baseball with Drew. I consider him a good friend. Really, you wont find a better person.
ReplyDeleteSmoothie - Was it a good concert??? Did they seem to missing their fourth?
ReplyDeleteIf by the Marriot in Point Clear, I've stayed there several times. It is one of the most relaxing places on earth. Don't miss the breakfast buffet with the crabmeat omelet.
ReplyDeleteSeanzie - I haven't stayed there in YEARS, but Jet did recently. I love that area. You can't go wrong.
ReplyDeletej-z, you're making me hungry. All I had for breakfast was a couple of graham crackers and that was at 6:30.
ReplyDeleteI hate actually having to work. But not as much as I hate Bama.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys, looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not looking forward to the traffic this weekend.
Great article WarTiger! Thanks for sharing. I usually like Wilborn and enjoy his perspective. Whitlock = Tool
ReplyDeleteI've never even heard of Point Clear. I just had to Google Map it. I thought it was in FL, but it wouldn't come up. So, I just searched for Point Clear. LOL
ReplyDeleteSomebody on here has to have Masters tickets.... who wants to hook me up with a badge?
ReplyDeleteLuv,
ReplyDeleteThe Grand at Point Clear is a great place! It is a very secluded and relaxing little getaway.
D. Miller, I wish!
ReplyDeleteMiller- i had tickets to the Masters in 2007 to go, but we had a vacation planned that same week. I gave them to my dad and brother, I still regretr that to this day
ReplyDeletebe back later Hotties...for those working don't work to hard..for those chillin...keep chillin...
ReplyDeleteD. Miller, have you played golf there? The course looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAt Augusta?
ReplyDeleteThat's one my lifelong dreams!! I doubt I will ever get so lucky.
oh... you mean at Point Clear? No, I haven't had the opportunity to yet... I have heard teh course is nice though, and would like to play it next time we go down there.
I've got a tee time on Monday, I'll let y'all know how it is.
ReplyDeleteI was just checking out the website. Then I checked rates...way out of my price range.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a few extra clubs in case one (or more) end up in the bay?
ReplyDeleteLuv, I'm glad you remember my stories...not my finest hour. I've grown up a bit since then, so let's hope I come back with all clubs.
ReplyDeleteAre you going to let your wife drive the cart and drink beer?
ReplyDeleteThe wife has thrown me to the wolves and is making me play with my father in law and her uncles. And these guys aren't drinkers. It's going to be a long day.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's just not nice. Not nice at all.
ReplyDeleteI haven't hit a golf ball in about 7 months...I wanted to hit the range a couple times this week but the weather had other plans. Looks like I'm going out cold.
ReplyDeletethe range should be open today and tomorrow... when do you head out?
ReplyDeleteToday immediately after work...it's about 6 hours from the ATL, will probably take longer with the traffic. I'll try to sneak out tomorrow at some point.
ReplyDeleteMonnie, even though it was 9 years ago, i could sense something was lacking, yes. :)
ReplyDeleteSeanzie
ReplyDeleteCongradulations
Have a good time hitting whitey
After 7 months lay off you should be able to kill some squirrels.
Luv,
ReplyDeleteI think the trail card gets you a break on the fees. If not, there are some "state rates" that you can get pretty easily. Lemme know and I'll hook you up with a link.
j-z, thanks! We can always use a break on green fees. Although, what I was talking about was the hotel rates! The cheapest room was over $300/night.
ReplyDeleteI read through all of late last night and early morning post. What a gruegantious bunch of .....
ReplyDeleteis that a word.
I've never heard it, digger. Is that a made up word like Monica her dirty sister's "laugterbation"?
ReplyDeleteoops laughterbation
ReplyDeleteUnfortunantly it is.
ReplyDeleteThey seem to have a ball though.
Who came up with laughterbation? I'll bet it was Monica.
ReplyDeleteMichael, you would be correct. It was she and her dirty sister.
ReplyDeleteSounds like someone needs to get the hose...although she'd probably like it.
ReplyDeleteYikes! Big goings-on in Binghamton, NY
ReplyDeletelike a freakin 747.
ReplyDeleteLuv, thanks for the heads-up, that isn't going to end well.
ReplyDeleteI fear you are correct, Seanzie.
ReplyDeleteCNN) -- Authorities are at the scene of a building in Binghamton, New York, where there are "multiple" shooting victims and hostages are being held, a county spokesman said.
ReplyDeleteBroome County Director of Emergency Services Brett Chellis said there is an "active" shooting situation at the American Civic Association, and that several law enforcement agencies are at the scene.
Chellis did not provide numbers of victims or hostages, and had no further details.
Pressconnects.com, a local media Web site, said at least four people were shot and about 20 people had been taken hostage.
Binghamton is about 75 miles south of Syracuse, New York.
According to the United Way of Broome County Web site, the civic association assists immigrants and refugees with immigration and personal counseling, resettlement, citizenship, family reunification.
the guy entered the building with a hig-powered rifle and just started shooting...
ReplyDeleteOk, this is going to sound stupid, but what rifle isn't high powered in close quarters?
ReplyDeleteI know NOTHING about guns, but I see your point, Seanzie.
ReplyDeleteI was just repeating what the guy on the Fox News channel said.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of point clear, there was just a big sewage spill in fairhope. Seanzie, you guys should make the drive over to orange beach one night and have some dinner.
ReplyDeleteWOW, binghamton isn't far from where i lived in PA. There's just crazies walkin round, ever see that movie "falling down". People gotta know how to relax and shrug all that stuff off. Jeesh.
ReplyDeleteLuv,
ReplyDeleteWould $169 per night including a round of golf for 2 fit into your plans?
That's cheap, j-z!
ReplyDeleteGimme an email and I'll shoot you the link.

ReplyDeleteBinOBA, I always say, "What's wrong with this world??" Things were like this when we were kids...were they?
ReplyDeleteLuv - I remember some radicals taking over a radio station in downtown gump in the late '60's or early '70's. I believe there were some deaths and definitely some hostages.
ReplyDeleteLuv,
ReplyDeleteYou have mail.
But, they didn't happen nearly as often, did they?
ReplyDeleteGotta watch out for the crazies. They are everywhere. Never know when someone is gonna flip. Time for the drive to work, yall take care, have a good day, enjoy the BEAUTIFUL weather, if ya have some. WAR DAMN EAGLE!
ReplyDeleteWDE, BinOBA
ReplyDeleteLuv, it happening once is way too often. It seems like it's happening more and more now, but is that a function of modern day news, or is it there are just more crazy folks?
ReplyDeleteThanks, j-z!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm trying to figure out, Seanzie.
ReplyDeleteSeanzie - yes and yes.
ReplyDeleteand, Seanzie, you are so right about one time being too many.
ReplyDeleteOur society is constantly being fueled by fear and hatred. It has always been like this. The only thing that has changed is the target of that fear and hatred and mass media's ability to feed it to more people.
ReplyDeleteBigCat just stole my reply and put his excellent mark on it. Well done.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wish I were eloquent, then I realize that Mrs. Gatiger would just expect me to converse more and then I'm no longer worried about it and happy with my particular status quo.
I just don't understand all the hate. Whatever happened to "live and let live"?
ReplyDeleteLuv,
ReplyDeleteSometimes they have specials for Ross Bridge too.
I've never played there 'cause I heard it's always crowded and there's always bottlenecks.
ReplyDeleteBottlenecks & golf. Reminds me of Lagoon Park in the gump back in the high school and college days. On Saturdays, you could count on spending 5 or 6 hours there trying to get in a round.
ReplyDeleteWe try to go early in the morning to avoid that.
ReplyDeleteI've played Ross Bridge. It's worth the waits. I am actually playing it next Saturday
ReplyDeleteI was going to have my wedding reception at Ross Bridge...but the girl there was less than helpful and that doesn't sit with with me.
ReplyDeleteHarrison, if you've never played at Ballantrae, you need to. I love that course.
ReplyDeleteJet's Travelogue ...
ReplyDelete1. Go eat with BinOBA ... haven't done it yet, but I will.
2. Stay at the Grand Hotel -- J-Z's right, the breakfast buffet with the crabmeat omelet and cheese grits are worth killin' for.
3. The golf at the Grand is playable. It's enjoyable resort golf.
4. Lunch in Fairhope at Panini Pete's.
5. Shop in Fairhope
6. If there multiple nights, then eat one night in the Grand Dining Room, but be sure to eat with BinOBA.
7. Doc's Seafood Shack is a wonderful seafood dive for oysters, shrimp, etc.
That is true of most RTJ courses. There are a lot of folks who try to play from the tee boxes way in the back who have no business doing so.
ReplyDeleteSometime I'll tell you the story about playing the Judge in Prattville behind a group of Hyundai execs.
I play from the Whites and I'm proud of it.
ReplyDeletejz, do you have the golf hookup at RTJ in Opelika? I'm headed that way next week.....
ReplyDeleteDoc's is the BOMB! The old one though, not the touristy one. We go every year when we head to Ft. Morgan and our waitress remembers our kid's names every year. Love that place. Royal Reds....yummy yum yum
ReplyDeleteLuv, One of my best friends lived on ballantrae for years and i never played it. I will one day
ReplyDeletej-z, "Hyundai execs" are the slowest golfers in the world
ReplyDeleteThe trail card is the best deal going. The cushy golf rates come with a hotel stay attached otherwise and then only on certain weekends.
ReplyDeletej-z - I believe that's true of those execs regardless of the course. I got stuck behind them in the gump before their plant officially opened. It was bad enough that the Pro let them tee off with 5, but they were awful golfers, very slow, and one of them must've thought he was Sergio with the way he was constantly regripping. Jerks.
ReplyDeleteSeanzie - more often than not, I'm playing from the whites.
Nice catch there Harrison.
ReplyDeletemy grandfather who was in the "hyundai" war, really hates being behind them. it is hilarious
ReplyDeleteI've had them tee off with 5 and then take 2 or 3 mulligans on every hole and refuse to let anyone play through. We finally just drove into them on the last 4 holes.
ReplyDeleteThat's why joining a private club is worth every penny.
ReplyDeleteI went to play a round at River Run in the Gump one day by myself, and got paired with one of the Hyundai execs and his wife. That was the longest round of golf I have ever played.
ReplyDeleteThe Washington Examiner is reporting that the Cutler deal with the Redskins fell through because the Broncos did not want Jason Campbell. Their QB preference was Brady Quinn, then Kyle Orton, they were not interested in Campbell. Taking off the AU glasses, are those two QB's better than Campbell? I just don't see it.
ReplyDeleteHarrison - one of the last times I played golf with my grandfather, he must've peed 3 times on the front and he wasn't a drinker. The point of saying this is that on the course there was only one restroom per side, so one pee was next to a tree and another was right there in the fairway.
ReplyDeleteAfter telling my parent's this story, I believe it wasn't long afterwards that my mother and her sibs had a sort of golfing intervention with the old guy. He was funny and I still miss him.
It goes back to Star Power, Jason Campbell has had just as much success as Jay Cutler. Brady Quinn is still a question mark, why anyone would want Kyle Orton is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I answered the question, the answer is, no they aren't better than Campbell.
ReplyDeleteSo, can you make the private club in the tub?
ReplyDeletegatiger- he still plays some, and i still play with him some. He used to shoot his age (78 at age 78), but he's slowed down a lot now. He does pee alot though. Come to think of it I pee out there a lot too, but I drink
ReplyDeleteSo today we have a crazy guy killing people in New York. Tomorrow another crazy guy is going to fire a rocket possibly...Me, I'll sleep in and chill by the pool.
ReplyDeleteReading y'all talk about golf looks like this to me:
ReplyDelete87dshek wjerigao wjaherlwa gkalsd Granddad peed oei82hadogaw sldf akwighs. Ksk eloaugy the Grand, shrimp, Fairhope.
you can't go wrong at the marriot in point clear. i could care less about froo froo fairhope. Unless you are into tea time w/ pinkies up and overpriced art and women's fashions and food. go on the causeway to Ed' Seafood Shed and get the yo' mamma's platter for two. Doc's is very good too if you head toward the beach.
ReplyDeleteDoug thinks Vilanova is going to beat UNC?
ReplyDeletehere's another L
ReplyDeleteChip Chip ...
ReplyDeleteIf Jet thinks he has a chance of Mrs. Jet being "cooperative" on the trip, a shopping trip in Fairhope is a small price to pay.
Airopuerto
ReplyDeleteJet - that's funny. When I go shopping with the missus (cooperative or not), I take a book and the iPod because I'm sitting down waiting for her. My only real purpose in being there is to haul stuff around.
ReplyDelete"cooperative" made me spew water onto my nice little notes and laptop!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are too much.
I'm proud to say I have never asked Greg to hold my purse or to "go shopping" with me.
ReplyDeleteGaTiger ...
ReplyDeleteOf course, our last trip down there was for our 20th anniversary, and it was the weekend that the Chiz hiring broke.
Apparently, I was deemed to have spent too much time on the Blackberry on the phone, and checking HABOTN.
Monica,
ReplyDeleteThat's like folding with pocket aces.
I was at the Tanger Outlets in Sevierville Tennessee when the Chizik newse broke. I got yelled at myself for being on the phone the rest of the day.
ReplyDeleteWasn't your 20th anniversary weekend, Seanzie.
ReplyDeleteTake my word for it.
I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteNo "cooperation", Jet?
ReplyDeleteFor Greg's sake, I won't explain it.
ReplyDeleteI missed that 20th anniversary piece, and yes, I will take your word for it.
ReplyDeletej-z said...

Wherever we play, it seems most of the guys play from the back tees and we always say the same thing!

But, I'm sure he would be more than happy to do so, if you did!
ok Jet but I'm just going to email you and ask you to explain it to me PLEASE
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, I think I kinda get it.
ReplyDeletesplain it to me
ReplyDeleteI think what Jet is saying is that it's like giving up when you have a fantastic hand.
ReplyDeletei get that - but how does that relate to me not asking greg to hold my purse?
ReplyDeleteMaybe he's saying Greg has a great thing going and if he does it one time...
ReplyDeleteI don't know...Jet! Please explain!
Always, always, keep 'em guessin'
ReplyDeleteJet- I get it, but I am unusually clever.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteHarrison = one of the least clever people I know.
ReplyDeleteJust thought I'd share this since we were talking about Tate's speed not too long ago:
ReplyDeleteBen Tate 2010 Draft Profile
During NFL Pro day Tate ran as fast as 4.38 and as slow as 4.57. His offical 40 time was 4.46! He was rated 6th out of 184 RBs.
In Contrast Wario had a 40 time of 4.52 with a 4.42 Low and a 4.63 High.
Mario Fannin
Jet, that's the only advice my grandmother gave me about men, oddly enough. Keep 'em guessing. Not sure why I was talking to my grandmother about men, but anyway...
ReplyDeleteWassup my fellow purveyors of Hottness.
ReplyDeleteFor those interested, here's Chris Low's blog from today about Antonio Coleman.
"I didn't want to go out like that. I wanted to be a part of the team that gets Auburn back to where this program is supposed to be," Coleman said.
ReplyDeleteI love guys with this attitude. The Auburn attitude.
Well, Monica, I was wrong...but it sure sounded good. LOL
ReplyDeleteOh well, thanks for trying, Luv.
ReplyDeleteYou're a pal!
:-)
Why do these people keep trying to talk about Auburn sports on this blog? sheeesh
ReplyDeleteand maybe it is because Gman has his own purse and doesn't need to hold another one.
ReplyDeleteThis is not an Auburn sports blog?
ReplyDeleteSomebody tell Jay so he can quit working so hard.
What do they think this is? The Hottest Auburn Blog on the Net or sumptin?
ReplyDeleteWill checks out dudes at the gym . I have seen it
ReplyDeleteIs it August yet?
ReplyDeleteMy sources at AU say that Lache Seastrunk attends a church pastored by a Rev. Luper, who has a son who is apparently a football coach.
ReplyDeleteLet us pray.
Giants released Plax today.
ReplyDeleteSeastrunk...what kinda name is that kinda name?
ReplyDeleteYou have a hearty "Hear, hear and amen brother" from my corner of the congregation.
ReplyDeleteIt is Texan for "bad @$$ running back"
ReplyDeleteLuv

ReplyDeleteJust finished a beer why does this make me feel goog
ReplyDeleteehyou ...
ReplyDeleteIf you want to feel really good about yourself ... come wash my truck.
must have been a stout beer digger if you're feeling goog
ReplyDeletehow many beers have you had, digger?
ReplyDeleteDigger - I intend to try and catch up with you starting in about 30 minutes.
ReplyDeleteTask in futility = dusting
ReplyDeleteSeastrunk is his last name. I dont think they made that one up. Lache on the other hand... lol
ReplyDeleteRegardless, he's a bad RB and he is my #1 choice at that position followed closely by Storm Johnson and Cory Grant.
Seastrunk
ReplyDeleteAppears to have originated in Switzerland. Originally spelled Susstrunk (with an umlaut over the u).
The Swiss are known for speedy runing backs
ReplyDeleteheaded to Florida for the weekend..ya'll keep it real...Have a good weekend Hotties!! WAR EAGLE!!
ReplyDeleteThose Swiss backs also carry knives with a multitude of uses.
ReplyDeletePerhaps we can send some "assistance" to Mr. Seastrunk's Swiss bank account.
