Coaching snapshot: Jay Boulware

JAY BOULWARE
Age: 36 (born 11/26/72)
College: B.A. from U. Texas, 1996. (economics)
Playing career: Spent two seasons as a reserve offensive lineman at U. Texas. A heart condition ended his playing career before his junior season began.

Coaching career:
•Auburn, tight ends/special teams (current)
•Iowa State, running backs/special teams (2007-08)
•Utah, tight ends/special teams (2005-06)
•Stanford, running backs (2004)
•Arizona, several roles (2001-03)
•Northern Illinois, several roles (1997-2000)
•Texas, graduate assistant (1994-96)

Mentor:
Larry Mac Duff, who was defensive coordinator at U. Arizona when Boulware was there as a position coach. It was MacDuff, a special-teams guru, who first suggested that Boulware begin learning about special teams. I've also heard Boulware speak highly of Tom Quinn, who coaches special teams with the New York Giants.

Previous Auburn experience:
None.

Coaching philosophy:
Boulware brings an intriguing blend of ideas to Auburn's coaching staff. He is an old-school guy in many ways, placing high demands on his players and making sure they hear exactly what he expects from them. He has the loudest voice on any field. He isn't ashamed to use that booming voice.

Many old-school coaches believe in what I'll call "cookie cutter" football. By that, I mean they think football is static. They believe in one way of doing things. Boulware isn't narrow minded and, in fact, spends a lot of time sharing ideas with other coaches about special-teams innovations. He wants to be a maverick.

Boulware is Auburn's most detail-oriented coach. While fellow assistants like Curtis Luper and Jeff Grimes talk more about hustle and attitude, Boulware asks his players see things on a smaller scale. He is a stickler for footwork, hand placement, stances. I watched him berate TE Bailey Woods during spring drills for aligning too far away from the tackle.

The offending margin measured less than a foot. That didn't matter to Boulware.

I sense that special teams is going to be his thing, though I also believe he could become a head coach someday. At 36, he's still moving along the learning curve. Boulware is an enterprising guy. He's not someone who waits for direction.

Personality profile:
Boulware is an intense guy. I've never talked to him when things seemed leisurely in his world. He's speaks forcefully. I wouldn't call it loud, but he's always audible and his comments leave no room for interpretation.

He speaks his mind. He's honest about his players, even when that honesty demands a critical take. I tie that in with his generally old-school outlook on coaching.

I consider Boulware the team's most upwardly mobile coach. Though I believe offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn will be the first assistant to land a major job, I expect to see Boulware gain regional/national relevance during the next 10 years. He's so driven. He has a precise view of what he wants, yet he's very interested in finding new ways to excel.

Those are the kinds of people who, in my experience, make it big.

  1. I wondered if I should stalk HABOTN or get a life; I made the right decision.

  2. Coach, I need some economic advice!

    ReplyDelete
  3. JayGT- that's one incredibly good carrot. Thanks!!! He is the coach I knew the least about, until now. I'll enjoy following his coaching career.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I like Boulware quite a bit.

    He reminds me of me.

    ReplyDelete
  5. then what's not to like?! Just don't let wifey meet him, though.

    ReplyDelete
  6. JayGT- do any of these coaches have hobbies? or is it coaching 23/7 and family 1/24th/7?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ok...Free iPhones for every bammer on this blog.

Economics degree. Unusual degree for a CFB coach. So he's trained in math and theory....That'll work.

These coaches are from all over, but all seem to have been hired through networking.

  9. FSJ - I think you meant 'barner...sign me up!

BTW.....Dearest Omnica...I searched for an hour this evening to retrace my steps and find the UGA blogger comments regarding Gadsden to no avail. I swear I really did read......

    apologies

    ReplyDelete
  11. Thanks for the effort, Hoopie. I tried as well without success.

    ReplyDelete
  12. But we've got our own Gadsden source right here in FSJ. I'm sure he'll shoot straight with us. Or maybe he'll just shoot us ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  13. JGT...
We can't get this stuff anywhere else. Don't think for a minute that it's not appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  14. awww I appreciate the effort, Hoopie. I've done that before too.

Jet - That should have been Grammy no Emmy. I thought of that error at the STRANGEST moment.

    ReplyDelete
  15. ehyou, I second your comment. The insight into how the assistants approach their work will make it much more interesting to me to watch certain positions perform when the season starts. Bouleware's approach seems totally different then T Rockers approach, it seems Chizik has assembled an intriguing mix of coaches and coaching styles. I appreciate all of the info Jay provides.

    FSJ..
I bet your Bama friends have no idea that you are in the HABOTN ROF......and what will they say when you come out of the closet!

    ReplyDelete
  17. They'll probably place him in a real ring of fire, tied to a stake.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I dig that hostile streak in you, Sheldon.

    ReplyDelete
  19. People like me make it big. Jay, good work.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think there is a lot more to Boulware than I thought. I am going to be very interested in seeing how our special teams does, particularly kickoff coverage.

On the lighter side, Undercover is announcing that Alabama will appeal their vindication. Salsa, you just keep getting funnier and funnier.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I must admit that I am concerned if any of my Bama friends find out about where I spend most of my non work time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So who else is bored tonight? Thursdays are no good around here.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Faker, what are they going to do, box you up in a giant Tide container and put TP on your head? That's my personal hell right there.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How will Boulware handle Wes Byrum? Will he decide who attempts FG's or will that be Chizik's call?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Dangit I hate it when workin' for the man gets in the way of my goofing off time.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My guess is they have a big metal hook ready for Byrum just in case. Miss too many, and you will see the big metal hook appear from the side of your screen and he will be gone.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jay, I bet you would be a helluva horoscope writer.

    ReplyDelete
  28. back from maui. sorry to read of coach quick's passing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. hi Tucson Scott,

    Where was your favorite meal?

What was your favorite tourist activity?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Tuscon - you'd BETTER have followed my advice.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mon ...

I'm gunning for an Oscar when I write the script for "Auburn Through The Ages," starring Hoopie as Tommy Tuberville, Steve FC as Tony Franklin, THT as Shug Jordan, Salsa Shark as Cousin "Humper," and Hugh Jackman as Jay G. Tate.

    ReplyDelete
  32. oh, and it's good to be back in habotnland.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jet- you've honored me. I will go to the hallway now and pay homage to my Shug Jordan autographed War Eagle print.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jet - you're not finished casting are you?

    ReplyDelete
  35. best meal was a hawaian eggs benedict in an off the beaten path place called "the blue moon cafe". most fun was hamoa bay, getting absolutely slammed by 15' waves, followed closely by a round of golf at makena north--rental clubs were taylor mades, rental shoes were nikes, free sleeves of balls were titleists. noone ahead of us, noone behind us--a golf fantasy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. glad you had a GREAT time!

    ReplyDelete
  37. oh, the avatar is the wife and i at the maui hard rock cafe in lahaina (across the street from the bubba gump shrimp factory.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jet - Your talents are not in casting.

Scott - Welcome home and glad you had a great time!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good night folks.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Feel free to make any casting changes, Monica, but I'm kinda partial to the cast thus far.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Monk, The Final Season starts in August, THT!

    ReplyDelete
  42. ElTurbo registers for classes tomorrow a.m. ... considering signing up for Varsity Football. I asked if he could play long-snapper.

At 5-5, 138, he looks like he could be a wide receiver or an offensive tackle.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's your cast, Jet. Just giving my unsolicited two cents.

    Go Elturbo!

    ReplyDelete
  44. My condolences to the Quick family

    ReplyDelete
  45. Long time lurker, even longer AU fan, this place sure feels like home!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Welcome to the HABOTN, Jay.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jay, it is like home. I annoy people here like I do at home.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Jet, did you forget to cast someone?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm still working on the cast ... and open to suggestions.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I need to add Gerard Butler to that list - I've forgotten what it's called. The one where we nominate hotties (not Hotties).

    ReplyDelete
  51. Then I'm home, my son tells me I'm annoying all the time. Monica, on an earlier tread you asked about online newspapers? One of the ones I manage puts everything online.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Surprise entrant in the hottie bracket ... nominated by me ... redhead on The Mentalist.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jay4U - Our local paper, The Herald Dispatch, is my first experience with a paper TOTALLY online. I love the way it's laid out. It's like they've scanned every page, pass over an item with your cursor and it appears in the viewer on the right. Fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Welcome Jay!!! That is exactly what we needed her was more Jays. We have had a Scott overflow going on for some time.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Look at tallasseetribuneonline.com. It's a great example of small newspaper.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks Steve, I always enjoy your views and your enthusiasm for AU.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Tallassee Tribune is a fine community newspaper ... I remember years ago when I was officiating a B-team football game and there was Jack Venable, one of the most powerful legislators and an Auburn trustee, armed with a camera on behalf of the Tribune.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Jack is definately missed, one of the most down to earth men I've ever had the pleasure of calling my friend.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I can read your paper every day and look for some news on "Charles from Reeltown"!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I kind of like that paper. Short and to the point.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I used to work for a 2X weekly. I did everything from sell classifieds to cover high school football. Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Jet, I know your son just graduated from STJ, my daughter is a 2007 grad of ACA and my son is a rising senior there. I've probably seen you at either campus during sporting events.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yeah, he's wrapping up Camp War Eagle. He was a drummer in the band and played soccer. My daughter is a rising sophomore ... We have several friends at ACA.

And Mr. Venable was quite a gentleman, and statesman.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The company I work for just purchased the Tribune from Paul Davis. We also own the Eclectic paper & publish 2x the Wetumpka paper.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Jay ... Who owns your company, if you don't mind me asking?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jesse, my son, is on the ACA varsity soccer squad.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hey, there is a Paul Finebaum article in this here paper. Man, that guy is everywhere, he's everywhere!!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Kim Price of Alex City

    ReplyDelete
  69. Another good newspaperman, Jay.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Jet - I just got your IM and oh no you're not!

    ReplyDelete
  71. 'Fraid so, Monnie Mon.

    I'm out Friday through Tuesday.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Absolutely, one of the best.

Good night y'all, one of my dogs tore her ACL Tuesday and is having surgery at 7 am tomorrow, I got to hit the sack.

    Talk to y'all later!

    ReplyDelete
  73. poor puppy :-(
    good luck

    ReplyDelete
  74. Jay ...good luck to the dog.

I'm thinking it's time for me to check out, too.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Are you leaving for Minne-app-Police in the morning?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Oh, one last thing...

    I HATE BAMA!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I've got to get ready for my role as Tony Franklin. I need to get a haircut even worse than my current one and then just set around for a few days telling myself how dumb I am. I should be ready in no time.

    ReplyDelete
  78. For those masachist out there, JCCW has a recap of last year's MSU Game. Read at your own risk.

    ReplyDelete
  79. i witnessed that MSU game from the upper deck in starkvegas. once is enough. at least all the scoring took place on my end of the field, i think...

good job as always on the profile jgt.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Awesome job, JayG. I hope old school does not mean no fakes or other fun stuff.

Typo in first line of personality profile (He's).

I think all newspapers should become small, and should come with magnifying glasses.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Morning Hotties! I was busy watching me some Clint Eastwood last night.

Jet - I'm certainly not a gentleman like Shug, but that's why they call it "acting."

Happy Lawyer Tillman Day...T minus 85 and counting.

    ReplyDelete
  82. LUV - for your listening pleasure this morning we've had:
God of Wonders - Caedmon's Call
Into the Fire - Bruce Springsteen
Jeannie Needs a Shooter - Warren Zevon
You Got It - Roy Orbison
Whiter Shade of Pale - Procul Harum (again)
Carry on My Wayward Son - Kansas
Sometimes by Step - Rich Mullins (I love the dulcimer)
and currently playing...Skating Away -Jethro Tull
    I'll see y'all at work

    Good Morning, Hotties! TGIF!!!

Tar Heel, you certainly have an eclectic array of music!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Morning Luv. Morning THT. Morning hotties.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Anonymous6:46 AM

Jay G, thanks again for your snapshot on Boulware. I'm excited to see what he's got! I'm excited about all the coaches, for that matter.

How many more days, Tar Heel??

    ReplyDelete
  86. Good Morning Hotties! I will echo Luv's sentiment, TGIF!

    Jay- Welcome home.

Last but not least, i'm ready for football season. Other than Golf majors, summer is a real drag sports wise.

PS- I hope Real Madrid chokes the big one.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Luv
I don't know what kind of music they listen to in Eclectic, but I'm guessing it's got more of a country flavor than my tunes.

We're at 85 days and counting (see 4:14)

    ReplyDelete
  88. Speaking of the countdown, I'm drawing a blank for tomorrow (84). I'd prefer not to use a current roster player.

    Nominations, anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  89. THT,
With all of your musical knowledge, are you familiar with Barry Beckett? He was one of the "Swampers" and owners of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. He was an awesome keyboardist and produced, among others, Hank WIlliams, Jr, Staple Singers (I'll Take You There), Bob Dylan (Slow Train Coming & Saved), Paul Simon. He is the piano player you hear on Simon's Kodachrome. Didn't particularly love the song, but loved the piano! Anyway, he died yesterday. He, like Quick, was only 66. Sorry, just a trip down memory lane, he & his family were friends of ours when I lived in Florence.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Silas Daniels for 85.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Montez Billings for 84, does he count as a current player?

    ReplyDelete
  92. What Number was Andy Fuller?

It seem's to me we have had more 84's as TE's than WR's. I may be wrong on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Eddie, there's also been very few big name players to wear 84, at least in recent history. But you're right about the TEs.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Cincy...
I'm sorry to hear that about Beckett. I like Steve Winwood and have a lot of old Traffic albums. He played with them for a while too.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I was wrong, Andy Fuller is #82. Close, but no cigar.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hi cincy - "all your musical knowledge" is a gross overstatement, but thanks. I just love listening to my tunes. but I can't carry a tune and can't even play chopsticks. Thanks for the information on Barry Beckett; I haven't read about the Swampers in a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  97. BTW, Slow Train Coming and Saved are in my tunes; I'll queue them up on the drive home so I can hear me some Beckett. And yes, the piano is the only reason I liked Kodachrome.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Sean, yep Billings is current. I'm searching for a former 84. Anybody know what number Hicks Poor wore?

    ReplyDelete
  99. as I continue my threadhogging habit...is there an official "Jay" count on the Hotties with that name? Seems like there are 1,690 of us. I'm sure Michael won't believe that.

BTW, great to see you posting, Jay4AU! WAR EAGLE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Leaving the Gump now ... heading to Hartsfield and on to Minnehaha.

    You betcha.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Poor #89, I think I recall now.

What about Mark Sharpe. Was he TE#84?

    ReplyDelete
  102. THT- Mark Sharpe did wear #84, but is he deserving of his own day? Maybe by default.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hicks Poor was #89, Mark Sharpe wore #84., Played on team with Dameyune Craig, Takeo Spikes, Fred Beasley. Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Jet- That's a long way to go see Prince. Be safe.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Eddie,
Maybe Mark gets his own day due to company he played with?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Especially since there was a certain Football Manager in that same company, I can buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Well, I don't have a roster for the 1957 team, so we'll go with Mark Sharpe tomorrow. Someone want to tell him he's got his very own day on HABOTN? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  108. anyone know where our current honoree is?

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqyZONa9yOo

    ReplyDelete
  109. Speaking of Hottie Jays, we need to make a Hottie out of Coach Boulware. I have great hope for a vastly improved KO coverage team this season. Even better would be a Matt Clark type kicker.

    NO RETURNS!

    ReplyDelete
  110. OA News is reporting that former DL coach Don Dunn is going to be an ISS instructor at Auburn Junior High. He will also coach the DL at Auburn High School. I'm glad to see him staying in the Auburn area, he was always entertaining to watch on the practice fields.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Donn Dunn is a great person. I have much respect for him and I've heard that he truly loves the Auburn area. Glad to see him stick around.

    ReplyDelete
  112. ISS? some kind of social studies?
or is it an idependent sociology study course like the one they had at AU a few years ago/ ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  113. ISS = In School Suspension

    ReplyDelete
  114. THT...
That video was awesome! Coach Dye was going nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I was too! Then and now.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I turned on the TV in an empty hospital room just in time to see that play. My dad was a few days post CABG and they wouldn't let him watch the game. So I stayed with him in his room until I just had to go find out the final score.

    ReplyDelete
  117. This is true about Don Dunn.

He's a good dude. I like his wife a lot as well. Very much a go-getter.

    ReplyDelete
  118. ISS = International Space Station.

    ReplyDelete
  119. THT - thanks for the video. That's probably my favorite IB play ever. My first two Iron Bowls that I attended in person were the two preceding that one, so I was starting to feel like a jinx. When Tillman scored, the AU student section went absolutely crazy. I remember that we had an AU student from Wisconsin with us and she thought I had lost my mind. That's most likely because I was waving my arms around like Pat Dye was, jumping on people, and speaking in gibberish.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Okay - favorite play on offense. I'll have to go with the Ed Scissum fumble that we discussed a few weeks ago for the defense and, of course, Punt Bama Punt for special teams play (x2).

    ReplyDelete
  121. Where is Gibber, anyway? I wonder what their unit of currency is.. a giblet?

    ReplyDelete
  122. I think it's near Pig Latvia.

    ReplyDelete
  123. ScottChoc- all your favorite plays were bama beaters, as they should be.

    I HATE BAMA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Hey folks - work is crazy busy lately and I don't expect that to change much at all over the next few months. Not complainin', just commentin'.

So, just a quick pop-in to say that I too HATE UAT!

That is all. Please feel free to carry on without me.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I feel that since 2000 Auburn has never played to its full potential against bama.

Even with overwhelming odds on Auburn's side, they just never seemed to go for the kill, always keeping them in the game. We never did to them what they did to us in 08.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Aero - over the last few days as I come in here and catch up on postings I seem to find little tidbits of information you drop that impress me more and more about what it is I'm imagining you do. Thank you for doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Aero- we were on our way to a slaughter in '05 until Prechae Rodriguez fumbled the ball and our momentum.

Just once, I'd like to see AU destroy bama like we did in '69 and '57. I didn't get to see either of those games. Our largest margin of victory since '69 is a whopping ten points.

    ReplyDelete
  128. This one didn't suck, either:
    Bostic
As far as none-Iron Bowl games go, I'm partial to the craziness of the LSU interception game and the 42-41 win over FSU in '84. Of course, there are some great plays in UF and UGA games, too. Dang, Auburn football is fun! (Except that I agree with what Aero just said. I really want to see us crush Bama one day. I thought it was going to happen in the 28-18 game, but we took our foot off the gas.)

    ReplyDelete
  129. We've been getting a lot of hits from Islamabad, Pakistan.

Anyone know who that might be?

    ReplyDelete
  130. I think it is Aeronaut Jay, if I am not mistaken.

    ReplyDelete
  131. What team scored the most points against Bear Bryant? That would be us. It was back in the 60s. I believe the 69 Iron Bowl.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Thank you. I cherish the support. It keeps me going. Hey sometimes even I don't know what I am doing, so there's that.

I might get flak for this but we are at least 7 years late in doing what we are doing now. I'm not impressed so far and I have reasons for that.

The 05 IB was 'crushing' but not 'killing'. I'd like to see them leave the stands by third quarter.

Malzahn, you listening? it's killing time, brah!

    ReplyDelete
  133. JayGT. That would be yours truly.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Scott.

10 years later Caddy had a similar run. I think it's a once in a decade thing.

    ReplyDelete
  135. The 2005 Iron Bowl is one of the most disgusting things I have ever watched.

Wish I could say that is the worst physical whipping I have ever seen Alabama take, but that honor goes to the 2003 Alabama/LSU game.

LSU physically dominated us in a way that I can't ever recall. They could have put the ball on the two yard line and we couldn't have scored a touchdown...ALL NIGHT.

We kicked a field goal late in the game to get on the board. Saban was livid with his team for allowing that.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I'd like to see the highlights of that 1969 game. Anybody know where to find some?

    ReplyDelete
  137. and 10 years earlier Bo had two of those runs. Bammers left the stands en masse in the 3rd qtr of that game, but it was weather related, not the score.

    ReplyDelete
  138. which AU player had longest run from scrimmage against bama? I think it was 85 yards.

    ReplyDelete
  139. FSJ- I bet he was livid; we know how he hates those mfers across the field

    ReplyDelete
  140. James Bostic had a long run in 1993 but I don't think it was 85 yards.

I have always maintained that the worst thing to happen to UA in that game was Stan White getting hurt.

IMO, if Stan plays the whole game, UA wins.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Anonymous10:50 AM

My memory is terrible...was '05 the year Cody was sacked 11 times?

    ReplyDelete
  142. JayGT- I'm thinking Lionel James or someone from Joe Cribbs era; can't recall at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Carnell's was a long run too...Don't know if it was 85 yards or not.

    ReplyDelete
  144. are y'all really going to make me look it up?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Yes, Brody was sacked 11 times in 2005. I loved every minute of that game. Mononucleosis and all.

"FSJ- I bet he was livid; we know how he hates those mfers across the field"

    Once again, you made LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Carnell was 80, first play from scrimmage after opening KO touchback.

    Bostic's was 70 +/- a few yds

  148. My favorite Iron Bowl play would probably be Bo Over The Top for the significance of beating Bama again, but for excitement it would be Nix to Sanders on the 4th down play in the 93 Iron Bowl. Stan White was injured, the perfect season was in jeopardy, Nix came in and Frank Sanders made a spectacular grab in the end zone. Still get chills thinking about it.

  149. The most disconcerting thing about the Shula error was his inability to find or better yet coach up a right tackle.

  150. Carnell's was at least 80...might have been 85. I recall it was either the first or second play of the game.

  151. Was it the Connie Frederick fake punt?

  152. oh crap, risk mgt person in the house. I may spontaneously disappear.

  153. I received an email from a friend about coach Jordan and something I did not know about his past. I am going to post it for you in the next post. It doesn't look long in the email but maybe on the blog.

    Please forgive te length.

  154. It was 65 years ago today. June 6, 1944. The invasion of Normandy. D-Day. The 1st and 29th Infantry Division of the United States Army faced the 352nd Infantry Division of the German Army. It was Germany’s best trained division. The place was Omaha beach, which had high bluffs, heavily funneled bunkers, machine guns and artillery. 5000 American soldiers died that day, most within a few hours. It is estimated that 20,000 American soldiers were wounded.

One of those wounded was a young lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers who landed with the 1stth Infantry Division.

He was assigned to the First Engineer Specialty Brigade. Having already participated in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Italy, battle was no stranger to him. But his recollection of D-Day would be different.

“When the ramp was lowered from our landing boat, the entire company became inert,” he recalled. “Except for me as a lieutenant, and hey, I was just an engineer, we were leaderless and almost incapable of action. Every officer and sergeant was either killed or wounded, and it became a struggle of survival and rescue. Boys from Georgia, Alabama, New York, California and all over the country were dying right beside me.”

He was also wounded. A piece of shrapnel tore into his left arm during the invasion. He wrapped it up and continued his effort to survive and rescue. His left arm would never be the same.

He received a purple heart for the wound he received in the Battle of Omaha Beach on D-Day. He would also receive a Bronze Star. He went on to fight in the Battle of Okinawa, and achieved the rank of Major. He considered a military career, but decided to resign his commission after the war. He was more interested in teaching and coaching young men.

He became a football coach, and in his pre-game talks to his team, he would often draw analogies between the great battles he had fought in World War II, and the battles about to take place on the gridiron.

Most Auburn fans only know of him as “the gentleman head football coach.” After all, he was at the helm of Auburn’s football team for 25 years.

The Stadium bears his name. In fact, when the stadium name was changed from “Cliff Hare Stadium” to “Jordan-Hare Stadium” in 1973, it was the first time in NCAA history that a stadium was named for a living, active coach.

His name was Ralph “Shug” Jordan.

And today, I don’t want you to remember him as the beloved and endeared Auburn Football Coach from the 50’s to the 70’s. No, today I want you remember that he was just another boy, a boy from Selma, Alabama, who stood side by side with other young men….some from Georgia, some from New York, some from California, some from Alabama….

Today I want you to remember him as one who fought for country and for our freedom. I want you to remember that 65 years ago today, he, along with others who were our country’s best and brightest, hit the beaches of Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword. Remember that he was wounded along with thousands of others as they hit the Normandy Beaches on D-Day.

His name was Ralph “Shug” Jordan. And he IS a “true” American hero.

'05 was the best one I've been to. We started going to the Iron Bowls when the streak started. We thought we were a good luck charm...obviously not.

  156. Frederick's was 84, though he started at the 1

  157. As far as long runs goes in the Iron Bowl, I'm more partial to Stabler's run, Gene Jelk's run or Santonio Beard's run.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Luv, everyone's luck runs out sometime. I accepted my scholarship to Auburn the week before the Iron Bowl in 2002. That was the beginning of the streak. I, too, thought I was a good luck charm. It had to end sometime.

  159. wtc, that is a great story. Makes you look at Shug Jordan in a whole different light.

    ReplyDelete
  160. WTC, it wasn't too long and it definitely was worth the time. Thanks for posting.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Stabler's shouldn't count. The AU player who was about to tackle Stabler for a loss was tackled by a bama OL. Ref staring at it didn't even think about throwing his flag

    ReplyDelete
  162. Luv,

I went to 30 (or was it 31?) straight UA games during Stallings' tenure without seeing us lose. I thought I was a good luck charm too...

The 10-11 years after Stallings left proved me wrong on that thought.

  163. I still love Coach Jordan. They just don't make people any better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  164. THT...

I've seen that video a thousand times and have yet to see a penalty....I blame all the mud and rain.

    :-P

  165. Cadillac's was 80 yards. My buddy that went to the game with me LOVED Caddy and he started crying. I kill him to this day for it

    ReplyDelete
  166. Thanks for posting that wtc...

Like Coach Jordan, my grandfather was at the Normandy Invasion and was later a recipient of a Bronze Star and Purple Heart at the Battle of the Bulge.

They certainly were our greatest generation.

  167. FSJ - put on your orange & blue shades; it's obvious ;-)

Joe Cribbs 85 yards vs bama in 1977 is longest rushing td vs bama

I have a tremendous amount of respect for soldiers. I don't even have a teeny tiny fraction of the courage they have/had.

    ReplyDelete
  169. our longest pass play vs bama = 74 yards. I would have guessed Noodlearm Todd before guessing the correct QB for that one.

    ReplyDelete
  170. OK, THT, I'll take the bait. Who was it?

    ReplyDelete
  171. None other than Charlie Trotman (to Byron Franklin).

    ReplyDelete
  172. "Yes, Brody was sacked 11 times in 2005"

    ahhhh...that is a nice memory

    ReplyDelete
  173. If bama can keep the lead in the series for about another 15-20 years, they will = the number of years AU has been ahead in the series.

In a related story, AU's gymnastic team will be looking to equal its series with bama on Stardate 3152.5

    ReplyDelete
  174. From ATL ...Longest TD run vs. UAT, I believe is Connie Frederick's 84 yard run on a fake punt

    ReplyDelete
  175. Coach Gus and his skinny calves gets even better looking with a summer time tan.

    ReplyDelete
  176. hi Jet, keep scrolling

    ReplyDelete
  177. Could Monica pick Gus's calves out of a calf line-up?

    ReplyDelete
  178. I wouldn't want to examine a line up of skinny calves. :-P

    ReplyDelete
  179. Now THT to be fair regarding the number of years Auburn was in the lead in the series...there were several decades where the teams did not play.

Ironically enough, some of Alabama's best teams were during this time.

    ReplyDelete
  185. WTC, thanks for the post about the young Shug Jordan as a soldier and a leader. It made my day.

    ReplyDelete
  186. FSJ - quit nitpicking ;-)
Actually, if, I mean when AU regains the lead in the series, I'll be happy not playing for another 40 years. It's too stressful.

Mon - That was very funny!

JayGT -the hits from "dumba$$" are only part mine; the rest are from CTF who can't seem to get Auburn off his brain.

    ReplyDelete
  187. THT - how are the hits from dumba$$ distinguished between ctf and Salsa?

    ReplyDelete
  188. Maybe Salsa and CTF are the same person?

    ReplyDelete
  189. ahhhhhh you're on to something there, depressed
