Sunday basic update

Hey everyone. I took Saturday off completely, as you know, and did lots of fun things with my peeps.

Thanks for still visiting the site and commenting like mad!

•I'll soon be headed to Riverwalk Stadium to cover the Biscuits-Lookouts game. Our minor-league baseball ace, A. Stacy Long, is on furlough and he has trusted me to maintain his high level of journalistic dedication.

•I haven't heard anything about Auburn during the past few days. A lot of the key people are on vacation (or headed there today), so I expect things to be relatively quiet until after July 4.

•I have scheduled an interview with Tommy Thigpen for next week. I'll be writing about Auburn's overall recruiting effort and discussing some of the more innovative ways coaches are connecting with prospects.

•I'll continue the coaching snapshots next week. Still remaining: Trooper Taylor, Jeff Grimes, Phillip Lolley.

  1. Wet and stormy Sunday spent catching up on HABOTN.

  2. Thanks for the update Jay. I am dying to get more information on the QB race, although there is likely nothing out there. I did run across an article on kodiburns.com about Malzahn's QBs of the past, but it appears overly optimistic. Okay, it is way optimistic saying that Auburn's QB position might become one of the most prestigious positions in the country and we could have a Heisman winner at QB. Somehow I can't let anyone pump that much sunshine up my butt.

Steve....Dude...you must be doing some serious searching to find that site. The name of the blog destroys any cred to the article.

  7. Hi JayGT - have fun at the baseball game. I love biscuits, so Go Biscuits!

    ReplyDelete
  8. from prior thread...
D.Miller - Molly dog pees on the driveway when the grass is wet. And if it's raining, I have to hold the umbrella over her. I do believe there is something wrong in this relationship.

depressed - you must be reading the exact same thing I'm reading today.

    ReplyDelete
  9. THT... at least I'm not alone with that situation... spoiled dog...

depressed - yes, TP was a great #9.
I had forgotten all about Teapot Brown.

And how could I forget Tony Richardson at #40?

  23. I'll never understand why Monica, whom we believe to be a resident of West Virginia, is considered an Auburn recruiting expert.

I've never seen her market herself as a recruiting expert.

    So explain this to me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think more of a recruit stalking expert. Troop & Lupe are the recruiting experts.

    ReplyDelete
  25. THT, two more and I'll go away:
    #51- James Callier
    #52- Mark Brown
These were around the same time, but were two of my favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Monica serves happily as a clearinghouse of recruiting information, collecting data from a variety of sources.

She is initially generous with supplying free information to get you hooked. Then she cuts you off. Translated, you think she is a recruiting heroine, but in reality she's dealer of recruiting heroin.

    ReplyDelete
  27. thanks, depressed. I was also a big fan of James Callier. And Mark Brown was seriously underrated.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 49: Lorzeno Diamond

    ReplyDelete
  29. 29: Derrick Graves

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'll admit to being hooked. I'm still waiting to hear if Seastrunk getting engaged helps or hurts Auburn's chances of landing him. I guess I'm in the cut-off stage.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 45: Darrell "Lectron" Williams

    ReplyDelete
  32. thanks, chip chip

Derrick Graves is a good choice. I didn't want to have to resort to Felipe Alou for #29 ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. what number was Jason Miska?

    ReplyDelete
  34. 62: LS Pete "Straight Outta" Compton

    ReplyDelete
  35. Miska was #45 also Tar Heel.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i think miska was 55.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 9: Chris Shelling?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jason Miska aka "Feet"! Now that's a blast from the past

    ReplyDelete
  39. 29: Duke Donaldson

    ReplyDelete
  40. I had another LS in mind for 62.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Shelling was #4 I believe chip chip.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 51: Takeo Spikes?

I know he wore 51 in the NFL.

    ReplyDelete
  43. mon is a recruit stalking, info dealer for us junkies...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Alvis was #9 on that team.

    ReplyDelete
  45. miska was indeed 45

    ReplyDelete
  46. spikes was 55; I have Ben Tamburello for that number.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Monica is not only a recruiting expert. If I recall correctly, she also sells inside information pertaining to my marriage.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Michael - thank you for reminding me that I need to renew that subscription

    ReplyDelete
  49. Solomon Patton to Florida...4 star reciever out of Alabama..well atleast he didnt go to bama

    ReplyDelete
  50. hi jhag; thanks for that news. it's pretty early in the day for you to be dropping in ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. tub's staff had offered patton. chiz's group apparently were not too interested from what i hear. i think we already have enough 5-9 WRs. i like they are going for 6' and up WRs for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  52. updated list...still looking for names of former AU players who wore these numbers:

    37
46 was Mark Dorminey 46 or 18 or some other#?
    63
    64
    66
I'm tempted to put Kramer and Nitschke in those last two spots .

    ReplyDelete
  53. okeydokey, I found confirmation that Dorminey was #46.

    ReplyDelete
  54. 37 was John Vaughn

    ReplyDelete
  55. Jay G.,

You're not meant to understand everything.

    Love and kisses,
    Monica
    alleged WV resident

    ReplyDelete
  56. THT, Eric Floyd, OL from mid 80's was #63 according to an old media guide I managed to dig up.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks Michael,

Jaret Holmes was 19, but I knew some kicker was 37...short term memory loss=Alzheimers

    ReplyDelete
  58. thanks depressed! Floyd also was in NFL for 3 or 4 years.

    ReplyDelete
  59. MrsTHT mixed biography with synopsis and asked if I was going to do a biopsy on each of these players.

    ReplyDelete
  60. after I finished laughing uncontrollably, I said, "No."

    ReplyDelete
  61. Eddie Blake huge OG All-SEC in '91

    NUMBER 66

    ReplyDelete
  62. TarHeel, I remember when Blake came to Auburn from JC. He was supposed to be all-world, but best I remember he never lived up to those (unrealistic)expectations. Still a solid player, though.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jay, Mon know everything! Geez thought you'd know that by now...

THT...I have looked all day to find an AU book that my grandfather gave me that was printed in 1958(after the 1957 season). The book had the rosters/records dating almost to the beginning. Team photos were included for many years.

This is serious that the book is missing, there are some family records in the book.

  67. Hoopie,

Good luck with your search for that very important treasure. Let us know when you find it.

    NoVa,
Congratulations to both of you! That is a great accomplishment. And it deserves a big WAR EAGLE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Nova - Congrats! That's awesome. The Keys sounds so fun right about now.

Hoopie - That's no good. I'm sure you'll find it.

Have y'all seen Michael Dyer's website?

    ReplyDelete
  69. awww THT I love the avatar with Molly dog!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hi Mon- thanks for that link. very interesting story.

The pic of Molly dog was 3 yrs ago (age 13) on the day she beat out a few dozen much younger dachshunds to win the obstacle course competition. I can't believe how young she acted at 13 compared to how elderly she is at almost 16. We adore that "puppy." She still bosses us around.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hoops, im sure you stashed it somewhere where you wouldn't forget. you'll find it soon bud.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Everytime I watch the Ben Tate trap play from the A-Day game, I get butterflies.

Thanks, Hotties for the best wishes on the book. We located 3 boxes stashed under a bunch of basement stuff that are still unopened from our last move.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Molly Dog is a real Trooper!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Biscuits top Lookouts 3-2 today. I hope JayGT enjoyed the game.

Biscuits still in last place in their division.

  78. Morning Hotties - it's the start of another ridiculous work-week here and just for that I intend to rachet up my level of hate today. So, y'all be cool.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Morning THT. Morning hotties. etc.

    ReplyDelete
  80. hooray Andy Fuller day! what a great day he had at UF in '94. also remember him scoring a TD vs. Bama in '95. WDE!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Good Morning Hotties!

What a weekend. Glad the week is here so that I can rest!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I don't understand something. Why is it when a city wins a championship they riot and set everything on fire? I mean that as a legitimate question. It just makes no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think I have determined why I dislike exercise so much. After 30 minutes on the elliptical I am sweating like a ditch digger. And I HATE to sweat. Very unladylike.

Does sweating make you lose more weight? IF it does, I will learn to love sweat!

    ReplyDelete
  84. i hate sweating for no good reason. like just walking outside to walk the dogs, or sitting in my office and sweating like crazy. that sucks. however, when you're running a few miles or hitting the weights pretty hard it feels good to work up a good sweat. a sense of accomplishment. :)

    ReplyDelete
  85. I dislike exercise so much because it's just not fun.

I'm back from Home Depot and now it's a race to get the yard work done before we get a predicted 3" of rain today/tomorrow.

I blame UAT for having to do yard work, all the more reason to hate them from the very core of my being.

    ReplyDelete
  86. after spending the weekend in Tunica, MS at the Gold Strike Casino (batchelor party!!!!) i really didn't feel like mowing yesterday. i should have, though. it's going to be wet all week here in knoxville too.

    ReplyDelete
  87. THT, i was scrolling through the earlier posts, #76 was Tim Duckworth. i didn't see that one posted.

    ReplyDelete
  88. oh, and John Vaughn was #37.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I'm not a big fan of any sustained cardio-type exercise. I do really like lifting weights and doing bodyweight exercises. Those are all better for you to do than plain old cardio anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Sean,

I like the weights, but then I don't sweat so much with those :) I alternate weights and cardio. I have to do cardio to lose any weight though.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Exactly, Cincy, you have to do the combination. One without the other isn't nearly as effective.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Running. That's it. That's all I do. Oh, and ride my bike some.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Must be nice, Norm. I ran track in high school and I did all the running there I'm ever going to do. I need competition, I can't just go run.

    ReplyDelete
  94. just popped in to get a diet coke.

I ran cross country one year in high school. I can't run cross the yard now.

We're still looking for 64. Does anyone know what jersey # David Jordan wore. He was a Sr. on the '83 team. I'm wanting to think he was 64 but I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Sean- I disagree about the effictiveness of just doing cardio. I have been doing a ton of cardio since last August and I'm down 99 pounds at this point. I'm slowly working my way into weight lifting, but it is only so I can tone up now that I've pretty much dropped all my weight.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Eddie, well done! I'm by no means the gospel on fitness, I just regurgitate what I learn. For me, I could do hours of cardio and it wouldn't do me any good.

    ReplyDelete
  97. 64- Can be Tim Castro :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. Working out is a big key into losing weight and getting in shape, but eating better also has a lot to do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Eddie, you're also right about that. Eating right is the most sustainable thing a person can do to stay healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Sean - I compete against myself regularly. I'm able to track with great detail various statistics from each of my runs. I look for improvement in each category with each run. I'll never set any records other than my own personal records. I run in several organized events throughout the year and while I'll never be the first to cross the finish, I'll definitely be well ahead of the last person. Right now, I'm training for my first full marathon which will be in November. I've set a "finish time" goal for myself which may be a bit of a stretch but if it weren't what would be the point? If I don't hit that goal, I'm confident that I'll be pretty close to it and even if I'm not I think I'll be alright with that and then just get myself ready to do it again a few months later.

    ReplyDelete
  101. the best way to really get yourself in shape is to do a combination of both cardio and weights. cardio burns the calories but by adding lean muscle to your body by weight training you are going to burn a significant amount more calories daily, even when you're not working out.

but eddie is right. eating right is the hardest part.

    ReplyDelete
  102. You know the first dude that ran a marathon died at the end, right Norm? This is why I don't participate. :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. I am aware of that but I'm pretty sure I won't drop dead. Though, if memory serves me correctly, he may well have been dead anyway after he arrived as he may have been a victim of "kill the messenger".

Oh yeah, I've changed my diet too since I started this running obsession. The most difficult sacrifice for me (other than getting up before the butt-crack of dawn) was to eliminate Blue Bell Ice Cream as a very regular staple of my diet. I've managed to get myself back to around College Freshman weight and I think I'll keep it within that range.

    ReplyDelete
  104. The eating is definitely the hardest part. I love food - and I love to entertain. I try to eat healthy, but it is really hard. I'm sorry, but for a snack, carrots just don't match up to Lime Tostitos. I do better just not eating at all, but that doesn't work because it slows your metabolism so much. So far, this weight thing is the only thing that has bugged me about getting old!

    ReplyDelete
  105. I used to run with a guy who ran X-country in college.... 17-18 miles per day. Now, I can't run the length of my driveway without getting out of breath.
I know I need to drop a few #s... But, seems like nothing I do takes them off.
I do NOT want to get back to my college freshman weight (165). I would look sickly at anything less than 200, and even that would be pushing it.

    ReplyDelete
  106. FWIW, it really wasn't long ago at all that I struggled to complete a single mile without stopping to walk part of it. Nowadays, that seems like child's play. Find some exercise that works for you and stick to it, you'll be glad you did.

I can tell you from my long run this past Saturday, running in the south only a few hours removed from a thunderstorm is not a pleasant experience.

    ReplyDelete
  107. My knees and back can't handle the jarring of running... And treadmills cause shin splints.
Old age is a bi....g pain in the a...butt. And I haven't hit 30 yet!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Miller - try "Move Free". It's a supplement/vitamin thing you can get at any pharmacy. There are others like it but that's what I've been using. I now swear by it. My knees used to kill me too but after about 10 days of taking it regularly, the knees haven't given me a single issue. I suggested another friend try it and he now swears by it too.

    ReplyDelete
  109. THT- 78 has to be Jeno James Day. If not, I will be sorely disappointed. He was a great friend of mine at Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Eddie, took my daughter to see "Up" this weekend. Your review was dead-on, great story and the 3-D didn't distract from the movie. The Pixar magic continues...

    ReplyDelete
  111. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip.

    ReplyDelete
  112. depressed- Glad that you went and aaw it and enjoyed it. Already a top ten movie for me.

On another note, saw "Angels & Demons" this week and I was actually impressed. The movie lived up to the book, which I rarely seem to see. I enjoyed it.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Eddie, if 'Angels & Demons' lives up to the book, it must be very good. That is one of the best books I have read in a long time.
I really enjoy his style of writing.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Jeno James had the biggest eyes inside a football helmet to me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  115. Tarheel, I finally located one of my programs from '83. David Jordan was #74. #64 that year was Randy Stokes. Just a thought- how about Wayne Dickens for #64?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Eddie - Your pics from the weekend are great.

    ReplyDelete
  117. D miller "old age" ..."Haven't hit 30 yet."

    Ha ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  118. D.Miller- I feel the same way about Dan Brown. Angels and Demons was by far my favorite Dan Brown book.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Thanks Mon. I hope you have been getting your walking in :)!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Yes sir, I have. I can't believe what a difference my new shoes made for my aches and pains.

    ReplyDelete

  123. HUGE NEWS. Auburn just got a solid commitment from Michael Dyer, the #3 rated Rivals running back and a 5 Star Rated!!!!!

    AWESOME PICKUP

    ReplyDelete
  124. Dyer committed?!! Seriously?

    ReplyDelete
  125. D.Miller- That is what is being reported on rivals. They will have a story up ASAP according to Bryan Mathews.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Not sure where this leaves Seastrunk or Lattimore, but wow, just wow!!!!!! Dyer has some good speed. A little short at 5'8", but he is listed at 201 lbs. Very Nice Pickup.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I'd love to read that story when it comes out.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Yeah, not sure what it means for Seastrunk and Lattimore. But, Dyer is a stud... I'll take it.
No one thought he'd leave Arkansas unless it was for Oklahoma.
Malzahn must have made an impression on him.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Matthews' comment/post was a bit confusing. first he says 'GOT DYER', then he says Dyer 'plans a decision this summer.' ????

    ReplyDelete
  130. Oh, so he didn't actually commit?

    ReplyDelete
  131. dunno. BMat just says 'stay tuned....'

    ReplyDelete
  132. Tease of the year!

    ReplyDelete
  133. All of you must be off at lunch or investigating...

    ReplyDelete
  134. it's my fault. i had to be the lunchtime buzzkill about Dyer. i was just making sure i didn't miss something BMatt had posted.

    ReplyDelete
  135. You're right Scottie, I mis-read it. Dyer is set to Announce Auburn as his school later this summer is the gist of what is being said. Hopefully Bryan Mathews Article later will clear it all up.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Later this summer??? Why not today?!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Dyer did not commit. But, he apparently came very close.
So now we lead for the top 3 RB's in the country?

    ReplyDelete
  138. new Dyer article up now on Rivals. i can't give it all away, but here's a quote:

"Auburn is No. 1," Dyer said.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  139. If anyone could email me that article, that would be just swell!

    ReplyDelete
  140. Good news, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  141. pretty much, he's at home in Auburn. loves the coaching staff. Auburn is his last stop. says he is planning on making an announcement this summer.

i'm guessing he wants to set up some kind of official announcement with a press conference or something.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Gracias amigos!

He reminds me of Michael Turner with his short compact frame, good speed and power. Good vision and balance with the low center of gravity, and good hands too.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I am wondering what the coaching staff is planning on doing with all these runningbacks. We are recruiting tight ends that will play the h-back spot.

I have also read where we plan to sign 4 linebackers. I believe we already have 2 of them signed so only 2 spots are open. I thought we had a bigger need at linebacker.

I just get the impression that linemen aren't as high on the priority list as they shuold be.

As for QB, that is a troubling position because we have a lot of them, but nobody I would consider outstanding. Even Tyrik wasn't that highly recruited by the big name schools.

This will be an interesting signing class in terms of how we are able to fit our needs.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Steve- I believe this staff is going after lineman hard, just not much news worthy events at this moment. As far as Linebackers, I've seen where it appears we will end up signing the best LB class in the nation once signing day arrives. Ladarious Owens is a strong lean from what I've read.

Lineman usually fall later along the way.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Steve- One more thing, it really helps to get these big name skill people in the folds early so that you can excite the big guys to come play for ya.

    ReplyDelete
  146. i would assume the big fellas would much prefer blocking for 4-5 Star guys. especially if they're names Dyer/Lattimore/Seastrunk. that would be nice, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  147. Linemen don't get as much pub as skill guys do. I think they are going hard after linemen... We just aren't hearing as much about it. I think they sign at least 4 LBs, but won't limit themselves. Add Owens and Curry, possibly Nigel Terrell to the guys we already have. Then if Fortt and/or Mosely want in, we find a spot for them.
It should be a very good LB class.
I think we will end up with a good OL class when all is said and done.

    ReplyDelete
  148. From what I have heard Seastrunk has been recruiting for AU, and recruiting a lineman or two. I've heard the same about Lattimore as well.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Webinars are fun.
    Webinars are fun.

Are we thinking that there may be a real chance of landing all three?!

I just find that odd, and maybe it is because of the past...understanding it's just that, the past.

It is all just talk at this point right?

I don't subscribe to a recruiting site, therefore my recruiting comments are limited to what I can research on the Scout free site. Compared to 2-3 months ago, we have made OL progress. We have much more interest that previously.

Unfortunately our possible WR prospects have dropped since 2-3 months ago. I think that these are the 2 most critical positions to improve talent. Whether we get top Wrs or not this season, We really need Trooper to come through training them up. Of course, after a couple of years doing that and the WR recruiting will get easier.

  153. AU1N04- It's all talk until signing day in all reality.

Mon - they are really great when the presenter forgets to turn off the ability for others to underline slides when they are reading them.

I have seen it happen, I did not partake.

Eddie - I definitely realize that. I just find it very intriguing that AU may be leading for all of these guys.

  156. Hoopie- I believ they probably only aim to sign 2-3 WR's this year. We have Jeremy Richardson & Shaun Kitchens committed, and we look to be in good shape with Trovon Reed, the nations #2 WR according to rivals. I believe we are in good shape at the WR position.

  157. AU1N04- Agreed. Can anyone ever remember Auburn being in on this many highly ranked recruits? I can't. It's definitely a welcomed change and makes dead times like these fun.

  158. yeah, has there ever been any position, any year where the top 1-2-3 guys are seriously considering AU? i'm no expert, but it seems unlikely....or at least it has been a while.

  159. I hate contractors. I just got dropped a month long assignment way outside my paygrade/knowledge base because "they" have to go to California. This assignment is due for their review on Wednesday. WTH?!

Sean - I see documents collecting two days of dust and someone asking "Cali" why it wasn't done.

    Just sayin'

  161. i'm thinking about 4 WRs as well. reed and goodwin probably the most realistic possibility. prater, cobbs and a few others AU has an outside shot at.

i don't think you will see AU recruiting too many WRs under 6' while gus is around. i think shorter RBs like dyer and seastrunk will be used as short/swing/screen pass catchers as much as they will RBs.

  162. Norm - I can't wait to add Blue Bell ice cream to my diet. I haven't heard any plans for it to be sold up here. I ate more than my share when we lived in TX.

Eddie - I'm sticking with Steve Wallace at 78. But i don't have a copyright on this thing, so feel free to issue any proclamations you wish! WAR EAGLE!!!

depressed - Wayne Dickens was 96 I believe.

  163. AUN1, I think that's exactly what's going to happen.

Thanks Eddie. Scout had him listed as an OLB and I didn't realize that he was equally good at WR. His Scout bio says that he is being recruited for OLB and Wr. If we get Reed and CTT can train up the big bodies (Kitchens and Richardson), then you would be correct that we don't need any more WRs.

  165. I expect us to see a mix at wide receiver, no pun intended. Hieight isn't everything and neither is speed. It is the combination that matters, along with one other thing that is pretty nice, which is catch the frickin football.

As for the runningbacks, I will consider it a huge success if we sign one of the three. It we get two, I consider it incredible, but it does seem possible at this point. If we got all 3, well, I would take it as a sign of the end of times and buy a lawn chair, beer, and cheetos to watch it.

Kitchens goes to Banneker HS in College Park, Ga. There are several other highly rated D1 recruits there now. Cartersville played Banneker 5-6 years and won all of them. They had great athletes and good in-game coaching, but poor fundamentals and discipline.

  167. Fake Steve Jobs - re: greatest Iron Bowl runs you've seen.
you weren't watching the same Stabler run that I saw. Pay close attention to the first 2 seconds. Keep your eye on the AU DE at top of screen and the UA OL/TE opposite who can hardly be seen since he's covered in mud. The DE shoots the gap and was about to nail Stabler but he was tackled. The refs probably couldn't see the bama player either, he blends in with the mud.

    can't count this one

  168. THT...
If you look at Daniel Moore's painting of the run in the mud, I believe the Auburn player on the right is the one that had been tackled.
