Here's what coach Gene Chizik had to say about Eric Smith's early-morning arrest.
He spoke to reporters after the Tigers' practice Friday night.
``I've spent a lot of the day fact-finding and doing a lot of research on the incident," Chizik said. ``In my opinion, it's a family matter between Eric, myself and our football team. I can assure you that is has been addressed. I've met with the young man, I've met with our football team. We have certain expectations of an Auburn man and quite frankly he didn't live up to that. So we've addressed it and if you see him in an Auburn uniform again I can guarantee you that he's paid a price to be an Auburn man and he'll be a lot better one at that point than he is now."

He'd be at least 40. Maybe in the 50s.
I think we were more interested in gauging Chizik's reaction than the consequences to Smith.

ReplyDeleteCan't gauge Chizik's reaction, though I know from past experience that he is not very lenient when it comes to off-the-field nonsense.
Discipline is important to him, no doubt. At the same time, you can't set the precedent of banishing players for any and every indiscretion.

Desmond Haley and Cory Lee scored touchdowns for the Lions, while Chris Kennedy kicked a 27-yard field goal. Haley had 88 yards on 11 first-half carries.
Carver didn't register a first down until after Prattville led 17-0. The Wolverines had minus-6 yards in their first three possessions.

just got back from the first of many live football games for me this fall. very cool. a buddy of mine has a younger brother who starts for a pretty good team up here. they should win their division. good times.

I like the tough talk by Chiz. Will see if the talk is followed up by actions. I'm sure it will be. Hopefully this will influence others on the team to try and not make a mistake like that.

ReplyDeleteWe got lucky because because Smith is in one of the positions we actually have depth. I had thought he would be the number 2 or 3 tailback. McCalebb will no doubt get some caries, but Smith has the potential to carry the load should Tate go down.

ReplyDeleteI read a little bit more about Todd today and his surgery. Someone had mentioned in here that the surgery was his third or fourth. From what I have read, I don't believe he had ever had surgery before.
ReplyDeleteI am not a doctor and don't understand how injuries like this heal, but from what I had read it was questionable whether surgery was needed. Apparently some are able to heal without surgery, and then there is Todd. Hopefully Dr. Andrews took care of it. I don't think there is a bigger name out there in terms of doctors that do these types of surgeries.

This Augusta, GA, native arrived at Auburn in 2001 via Hargrave Military Academy in southern Virginia. Carlos was named to the All-SEC Freshman team after starting 10 of 12 games that year. He missed a total of 5 games in his sophomore and junior seasons due to injuries, but started all 13 games in his breakout senior season.
Mr. Rogers's neighborhood was not a friendly place for receivers. On his way to earning the 2004 Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's most outstanding DB, Carlos completely shut down some of the country's leading receivers. He was also a consensus All-American and was one of the leaders of a defense that ranked first in the NCAA in fewest points allowed per game.
The Washington Redskins made Carlos the 9th selection in the 1st round of the 2005 NFL draft, the highest draft position ever for an Auburn DB.
HONORABLE MENTION:
Randy Campbell - QB and country western singer led the Tigers to an 11-1 record in 1983, defeating 4 Top Ten teams that season, including 3 in consecutive games. I don't know if there are any stats for this, but I'd bet your annual pay that he had the fewest turnovers in a season of any wishbone quarterback. Randy is a native of Hartselle, AL.
Ben Leard - Not from Hartselle, but from Hartwell, GA, 45 miles NE of Sanford Stadium. Ben was the 2000 ALL-SEC quarterback. He still holds the Auburn single game passing yardage record with that monster 416 yd/4 TD winning effort between the hedges in 1999. And people think Michael Vick was cruel to dogs.
Freddy Weygand - WR in 1984-88 and native of FSJ's stomping ground, Gadsden, AL.. Freddy graduated from storied Emma Sansom High School and was a member of the 1983 USA Today ALL-USA Football Team (3 of the 24 members of that team -Weygand, Rocker, and Stallworth - signed with Auburn....hmmm).

ReplyDeleteI would have went with Campbell myself. Probably the most unimpressive QB in Auburn history in terms of running ability, arm strength or just plain athletitic ability......but all he did was win games. I could out run him in a foot race I believe. Randy was the best I ever saw at reading a defence running the 'bone. He an an uncanny ability to know when to leave it in the fullback's gut, make the pitch or take it himself.
I LOVE watching a well executed withbone attack - maybe why I catch a lot of GT football on the tube, reminds me a little of the old days.

ReplyDeleteGosh the Freddy Weygand stories I could tell....
He was a great player on a great team in High School.
Like me he is an alum of the former Emma Sansom High. The team he played on was loaded....He was a teammate of Larry Rose & Gene Jelks. Several other players on that team played at smaller schools. His senior year (1983) they went undefeated and played on the road for the state championship against Escambia County. They came up short in a downpour. However that's not what I remember from that year. I remember the semi final game against one of the great Colbert County teams at their place. They were ALWAYS good back then. We were down about 20 points at half time. Weygand led us back in the second half. He was amazing. He caught the winning touchdown with mere moments remaining in the second half. He dropped a sure touchdown the play before. Sansom had so much confidence in Freddy that they came back with the same exact play for the win. As long as I live I don't think I'll ever forget that season or that night. This season laid the groundwork for the next year (1984) when they finally won the state championship in Gene and Larry's senior year. Freddy was already at Auburn by that time but he was instrumental in setting up that run that went 29-1 over two years.
Ironically Sansom played Colbert County...on the road again....in 1984 and won on one of the strangest plays I can ever remember. They fair caught a punt...and at that time the rules allowed you to do a free kick from the spot of the fair catch. So Sansom won the game on about a 45 yard free kick. Colbert County didn't know what hit them. I bet some of their coaches are still arguing with that official on the field in Leighton.
Ironically that year in a strange twist Sansom played Gadsden High in the semi finals and beat them by 2 points for the second time that year. Gadsden may have been the second best team in the state in 1984.
