Days to kickoff: 14

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

14

HAPPY CARLOS ROGERS DAY!!!

This Augusta, Ga., native arrived at Auburn in 2001 via Hargrave Military Academy in southern Virginia. Carlos was named to the All-SEC Freshman team after starting 10 of 12 games that year. He missed a total of five games in his sophomore and junior seasons due to injuries, but started all 13 games during his breakout senior season.

Mr. Rogers's neighborhood was not a friendly place for receivers. On his way to earning the 2004 Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's most outstanding DB, Carlos completely shut down some of the country's leading receivers. He was also a consensus All-American and was one of the leaders of a defense that ranked first in the NCAA in fewest points allowed per game.

The Washington Redskins made Carlos the 9th overall selection in the 2005 NFL draft -- the highest draft position ever for an Auburn DB.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* Randy Campbell: QB and country singer led the Tigers to an 11-1 record in 1983, defeating four Top 10 teams that season. Three of those came in consecutive games. I don't know if there are any stats for this, but I'd bet your annual pay that he had the fewest turnovers in a season of any wishbone quarterback. Randy is a native of Hartselle, Ala.

* Ben Leard: Not from Hartselle, but from Hartwell, Ga., 45 miles NE of Sanford Stadium. Ben was the 2000 ALL-SEC quarterback. He still holds the Auburn single game passing yardage record with that monster 416 yd/4 TD winning effort between the hedges in 1999. And people think Michael Vick was cruel to dawgs.

* Freddy Weygand: Wideout in 1984-88 and native of FSJ's stomping ground, Gadsden, Ala. Freddy graduated from storied Emma Sansom High School and was a member of the 1983 USA Today ALL-USA Football Team (3 of the 24 members of that team -- Weygand, Rocker, and Stallworth -- signed with Auburn....hmmm).

Let's hear some shout outs for our other #14s

I blame the bammers (excluding FSJ, of course), so my hate-o-meter is pegged to the right!

  5. FSJ - they don't still allow free kicks after a fair catch?

back to work pour moi. Y'all have a great Saturday!!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. FSJ - Enjoyed your HS stories. I've never seen a game in which the free kick after a fair catch actually happened. I knew it was in the rules, but never witnessed it even on tv.

So how did they managed it? Put the ball on a tee at the spot of the catch? Was it like a free kick after a safety with the teams lined up 10 yds apart?

  7. This time in two weeks, I'll be getting ready to tailgate!!

  8. I don't know if they are still allowed or not THT..I do know that the Colbert County coaches were dumbfounded.

I'm shocked that Buster Gross thought of that. Surely an assistant on his staff told him about it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Exactly Coosa...

They put the ball on the tee and the other team could not try to block it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. THT ...

I don't know if it's still the rule in colleges, but it is in high school. I've seen it attempted twice, converted once.

The time it was missed during my officiating days. I was running the clock, and 20 people piled into the press box to start yelling. I told them my standard line ... if you know the rules, then you can yell. Otherwise, move on.

  11. Exactly Jet..

The Colbert County folks thought they were being cheated....and the Sansom folks (outside of the team)....thought we were getting away with something.

Only time I've ever seen or heard of it happening in a game...not to mention one that deep in the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  12. not sleeping at my computer FSJ, i just got lucky. i'm at work this morning so it's kinda cheating.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I fell asleep on my computer once...well my computer keyboard to be exact...

Of course I was on Ambien.

  14. The other rule that was in the HS book that may or not be in the book anymore (it's been 8 years since I've officiated) was an unlimited number of forward passes on a given play.

The restrictions on linemen remain in force, but the main difference was that the defensive pass interference restrictions went away after the first pass.

  16. IV didn't bring the AA Generals any luck last night. They got waxed 41-6.

  17. Jet:

I assume that the "passer" or "passers" have to be behind the line of scrimmage too?

    ReplyDelete
  18. 14 days, oh my goodness it is here!

    ReplyDelete
  19. FSJ ...

Yes. The way you'd usually see it was the 3 step drop and throw forward to the receiver, who throws it downfield.

The goofy thing is that you could throw it across the line, pitch it back behind the line, and throw it again. The passer has to be behind the line always the linemen can't be downfield.

  21. MissTHT is now an official Hottie. She spent hours yesterday reading HABOTN threads and intermittently LOL. She created an account. Not sure if she'll ever post, unless it's to relay embarrassing stories about her father to all the Hotties. Hopefully she'll consider the potential financial consequences of such posting.

    ReplyDelete
  22. and there he is. MissTHT's biggest laughs were reserved for Thigh Master's posts. ALL HAIL KING OF EURASIA!

  23. Wow, there were a lot of good players with 14, including my one of my favorite QBs, Randy Campbell. I have lots of good memories of all of these guys.

  24. I think we're really at 13 today, that way the Friday would be 1 day to kickoff....Otherwise, the day of kickoff is 1 day to kickoff, which isn't exactly right.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm sorry I missed the free kick conversation. I'll have to get someone to splain it to me.

  31. Sad story about the kid passing away at a football game. I wonder what the cause of death was. The story doesn't say. It just says the kid went down without being hit.

  35. PF ... I've gotta get back on my game and realize again that the HABOTN is gargantually more important than all things career related. I'm not sure where my mind has been.

  37. I make a motion to forgive Phred of his transgressions and accept him back into the HABOTN family with open arms.
    Anyone second the motion?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have seen a free kick attempt for a field goal on TV. IIRC, it was the end of the first half of a Colts game quite a while back. The other team had just scored, and kicked a little popup kickoff to prevent a return. The Colts player fair caught it, and the coach let the kicker try about a 65 yarder which came up short.

  40. My loss on not having time to read or post for a little while.
If you are out at 1:42 in the morning on a school day trouble will find you. Don't have to go looking for it. when will these kids ever learn?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I tried to tell you it looked weird, THT... but you had to chide me with something about a sunset...

It made everything look like it had a purple tint to it...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Brothers and Sisters ...

Our wayward Brother Phred has come forward today seeking forgiveness for his slackness concerning our family.

In the spirit of forgiveness, let's pray for him and let him be restored. After we dismiss, let's all be sure to extend the right hand of HABOTN fellowship.

And, Phred, walk in the light.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm so hungry I can't concentrate on work. It may just have to pile up until I can find a chance to go grab some food.

But nothing can break my HABOTN concentration!

    ReplyDelete
  44. ahhh Freddy Weygand...Now you're talking! Another great job, THT.
Can't believe we're down to two weeks!!!

  46. Hi Mon - newest Hottie, MissTHT says you think Monk was boring. Me too. I guess it is time for this series to end. I did like the mechanic.

And the sheriff jumped before the first bullet hit the ground. There's no way a model saucer could have looked as huge as that thing they put above the trees. It's starting to get a little too "Psyche silly".

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm sure it's probably just me, but I just have to air my concern.

Jet, your hate flag seems to have gone flaccid.

    There, I said it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. FSJ... are you sure you are not a secret Auburn Tiger fan? I thought your piece on Freddy W. and the Emma Sansom team was outstanding, written in the tradition of our own THT. I will even apply a Monica comment by saying "I loved it". A true human interest story. Your presence on this blog makes me hate Bammers just a little less, but not much mind you. Not much happening at the home today. Mostly the residence are taking naps.

    ReplyDelete
  49. THT and Miss THT - I was SO dissappointed in Monk. I was hoping they could keep the writing strong for this last season. Maybe the remaining shows will redeem.

Miss THT - I hope you'll post. We need more chick posters!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hoopie - That avatar? Seriously?

  51. Hoopie..

It must have been cold outside.

  52. Hoopie, I don't care what anyone says. You have a fine taste in avatars.

  54. J-Z.. You know I don't bring luck, have I ever brought you any? It may be a long season for the Generals. They really need to be coached on the basic fundamentals. I saw mucho cases of poor tackling, numerous missed blocks and pitiful DB coverage. I hope the coaches study the film closely and correct things in a hurry. Not so much of a problem for the PHS Lions. They kicked a$$ and took names last night it looks like. Played pretty good defensive ball it looks like and that was my early season concern for them. Oh well, I got to see some football last and I am ready for some AUBURN football. Can I get a WAR EAGLE out there? Keep hate fresh.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would like to give a shout out for a number 14 that you youngsters have probably never heard of. Bryant Harvard, QB 1957,'58 & '59.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have a question. If Coach Tubberville knew what the problem was and he said he could fix it. How was he going to do it and with whom was he going to do it. Looking at our shortages in players, especially on defense, I can't figure out what his plan could have been but to start recruiting better players. I know that we have lost several of his cruits during the off season; however, I can't see that we lost any players that might have given us a big turn around this year. And who in the devil was he going to hire as OC and DC this year?
