Days to kickoff: 20

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

20

HAPPY FREDERICKSON - CRIBBS DAY!!!

Two superlative Auburn football players honored today.

Born in Ft. Lauderdale and a graduate of South Broward High in Hollywood, Fla., Ivan Charles "Tucker" Frederickson and I have two things in common. We both went to Auburn with dreams of being a veterinarian, and neither one of us is. That's obviously where the similarities end. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Tiger was one of the last of the two-way players, and one of the best. Tucker was described by Coach Jordan as "the most complete football player I have seen in the 38 years I have been connected with the game."

He was a consensus All-American (as a safety) and SEC MVP in 1964, a year in which he finished sixth in the Heisman vote. Frederickson was a two-time winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. He led Auburn in rushing in 1964 and led the team with 4 interceptions in 1963 (1964 defensive data is unavailable). Will Walls, scout for the Pittsburgh Steelers, said of Frederickson, "He'd go in the first round of the NFL draft at five different positions - running back, fullback, tight end, cornerback or safety. He's the best blocker in the country and the best safety. He can be something else as a runner with his size and speed."

Tucker Frederickson was the NUMBER ONE pick in the 1965 NFL draft and earned a trip to the NFL Pro Bowl in his rookie season! Unfortunately, he then blew out a knee and missed the entire 1966 season. He returned for 5 more seasons with the Giants, but never regained his original form.

Tucker Frederickson is a member of the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Although he graduated from Auburn with a science degree, he became a serious student of finance, joining the Allen & Co. investment firm while playing in the NFL, rising to a position of vice-president for investment banking. After 15 years on Wall Street, he returned to his native Florida where he continued work in securities and also reportedly developed several golf courses of renown.

As a testament to his worthiness for top billing in today's Kickoff Kountdown, Tucker Frederickson was the highest vote getter for Auburn's 1892-1992 All-Century Team. Yep, he got more votes than any of the Auburn Heisman or Outland Trophy winners.

Phillip Marshall wrote an excellent article about Mr. Frederickson which I encourage all the Hotties to read. He recounts the story of when Tucker showed up on his Auburn recruiting visit with nothing but 3 bottles of Jack Daniels.

As deserving as Tucker Frederickson is of top billing, I just can't see relegating one of my personal all-time favs, Joe Cribbs, to "just" honorable mention. The Sulligent, Ala., native is still Auburn's 4th all-time leading rusher, accumulating 3,368 yards and a 5.13 yds/carry average. He was a two-time All-SEC performer, AFC Rookie of the year, and the only rookie to start in the 1980 Pro Bowl. Since May 2008, Mr. Cribbs has been Commissioner of the as-yet-to-get-off-the-ground UNFL/UNGL.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* Danny Arnold: Graciously surrenders his #20 jersey to Joe Cribbs when the latter arrived on campus.

* (Added by Jay G.) Damon Duval, swell punter and disavowed rebel. Played from 1999-2002.

Y'all HOTTIES step up now. Don't leave all the shout-outs to me. LET'S HEAR IT FOR OTHER 20s!!!

  2. Maybe everyone has gone tom Fan Day.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I hear there's substance at fan day.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Not your father's Tim.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I liked anonymous Tim better, I think. Jay G killed him, though.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I am the former anon that Michael thought was Tim. Not even close Michael.

    ReplyDelete
  7. There was once an anonymous poster who signed his real name, was berated for it, then chose Tim. He was also berated for not picking something cooler than Tim, but there's something catchy about a name as simple as Tim. At that point, all anonymous posters became Tim.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Welcome as an official participant, though, not even close Tim.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Correct.

I use "Tim" in my personal life to describe an unnamed person.

WIFEY: "Who was at the meeting?"

ME: "Eh. A bunch of Tims."

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jay,
Do you have a feel for any of our coaches getting either nominated for or receiving end of the year honors, such as Chizik as SEC coach of the year?

    ReplyDelete
  11. No.

That's 12 games and four months from now.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That's pretty funny, JGT. That should be an Urban Dictionary entry. If you can get one of those spoiled kids on [insert random MTV show here] to say it, I think it might just catch on.

    ReplyDelete
  13. IBE here and not at fan day

    ReplyDelete
  14. I met Scottie B. last night in Auburn. He let me preview the HABOTN hats in person.

    They are mighty bad ass.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Michael has his own Tim....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thats what I thought! 20 damn days!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anyone else going to fan day?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am thinking that Justin Albert may have missed an opportunity that he had worked hard for with the scholarship openings that we now have. I know that it is customary to wait for walkons to become seniors before they hand out schollys, but Justin was making waves and showing real potential. However, I like the way that this new staff is enforcing its rules. I think they are doing a better job than the last crew.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Matt ...

Some will be there ... I know Norm is headed that way.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It is hard to be better than Joe Cribbs, but Tucker Fredrickson may have been the best player to ever play for Auburn. Unfortunately I was too young to remember seeing him play, but there is plenty of stories out there about this guy. He was a great one.

    ReplyDelete
  21. MT, it is hard to believe this crew could enforce rules any better than CTT did. I do agree that they are doing a great job. They know they need every player they can get, but that didn't stop them from booting people that wouldn't follow the rules. They have earned a lot of respect in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Scottie B will be there wearing a HABOTN hat.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I an old and anonymous Tim had completely slipped my mind. Ooh, the memories.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Tim, you really ought to pick a new handle.

    ReplyDelete
  25. How about Tim Not Tim

    ReplyDelete
  26. Tim! Can it really be you? You have been missed.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love the picture with today's countdown entry.

Can't believe tomorrow the days left will be in the teens. That's a milestone with me when counting stuff down. The teens and then the single digits. Exciting stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jet have you recovered?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Michael's Tim claiming to have been called Tim as anonymous by me makes me feel how Wilt Chamberlain must have felt when random people showed up claiming to be his kid. I am sure you are right, but I ain't gonna remember your momma, and you ain't getting any money out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The only thing I remember about Tucker Fredrickson is Brian Piccolo talking about him in the movie, Brian's Song. "Ole Tuck, he went to Allburn,"

    ReplyDelete
  31. If Rollison is chosen as the number 2 quarterback, is there a position Caudle could be moved to so he can play? Similar to Kodi's move to WR? Surely there must be a place for him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Caudle could be the holder on kicks...or at least of the clipboard.

Ah, yes, Damon Duval day. The guy who was a great kicker two out of his 4 years at Auburn, but somehow stunk it up his freshman and senior years.

Also well known for booming it out of the endzone when we needed a punt inside the 20 and shanking it when we needed a booming kick.

However, best know for his blonde hair and angering Tub in the 99 UT game by throwing a pass on a fake punt that went higher than most punts allowing Deon Grant to run from one side of the field to the other to knock the ball away from a wide open Travarious Robinson.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'll never forget the fake punt Tubs called for Duval on 4th and 20 on our own 10 against Florida in 2002. And it wasn't even a passing fake, it was a running fake. That might have been the dumbest call I have ever seen.

Duval had that amazing run in '01. What was it, 3 games in a row or something won on his kicks? That was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I always forget the fake punt in Florida in 2002 which was probably the biggest bonehead in game call in Tub's career, but I always remember, Duval with a chip shot to win the game and kicking barely above the line and getting it blocked to send the game to OT. If he had kicked it like he would a PAT, we win the game.

In 2001 we beat Vandy, Miss State and Florida three straight weeks on Duval FG's.

In 2000 and 2001 he was a good kicker, but 1999 and 2002 he wasn't good at all.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In my world, Tim = Earl.
Wife, "What's her husband's name again?"
Me (not knowing), "Earl" (with conviction)
    Wife, "sigh"

    ReplyDelete
  36. You know what's weird about that missed extra point length FG in '02? Seems like everyone in our section knew he would miss it. He had been struggling quite a bit up to that point. Much more apprehension than is normal for that short of a chip shot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Can't argue with Tucker being the Man on 21 day - though I was too young to remeber his exploits.

I have some memorable games filed away about Mr. Cribbs though. Electrifying!! When Auburn didn't have much to be electrified by. Favorite memory is a trip to Sanford Stadium when both Brooks and Cribbs each put +100 yards on the 'Dogs- I beleive we pulled out the Orange jerseys for that one too.

    Nice picks THT.

    LT

    ReplyDelete
  38. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HAG!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Duval was very quick. That came in handy at times.

As for Caudle, holding for kicks makes sense, but I can't think of another position he would fit into. He has had surgery on both his knees, so although he is fast, I can't really see him playing receiver.

The real question is if Rollison should be the number 2. If Todd is good for the year and Caudle could be an adequate backup, it might be better to redshirt Rollison and save the year of eligibility. The only thing would be we might end up starting an inexperienced QB next season if Caudle couldn't handle things early in the season.

  40. From Brent's Schoening's Caring Bridge site:

With broken heart I will try to write this update. Brent left us for a better place this morning. He started having severe problems aroung 2:30 this morning. But as you know Brent, he wasn't leaving his precious wife without a fight. As you know he has been fighting for almost a year now. And this last battle was not any different. He would not give up, we talked and told him to rest, but noooooo, he finally wore us out. We were in the room, some sleeping, some watching over, and then around 10:30 his breathing changed from a struggle to a real struggle. We all talked to him and loved on him and his dad kissed his head and told him he loved him and to rest--then he was gone. Yes, I know, breaks your heart. We are heart broken, but he will have no more pain and suffering. But we aren't losing the sick patient, we have lost the wonderful young husband, son, brother, nephew, cousin, son-in-law and friend that walked in this hospital almost a year ago to date.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Incredibly sad Kathy:(

    ReplyDelete
  42. Monica ... I took two aspirin.

Steve ... we're playing Tyrik. We're not in a position to redshirt weapons that can be useful.

    ReplyDelete
  43. MissTHT and I just crushed THTjr and MrsTHT in bridge. Woohoo!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Padraig may be an IRA terrorist ... trying to kill his playing partner with a shot. He looked like me yakking it around out there on the par 3.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I feel for Mr. Caudle, but if Tyrik is close and improving quickly, I'd like to see him at #2 and getting ready to be the man for the next 3 years. How cool would it be to have a qb start for us 2 years in a row not named Cox?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Why did we go 6-4 in '64?

Because Jimmy Sidle's throwing arm rotator cuff was torn in the very first game, thus elimiinating a balanced offense and threat of the forward pass.

Why did Jimmy Sidle's rotator cuff get torn?

Because Sports Illustrated predicted AU to be #1 and put Sidle on the cover just before the season started.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jet that Par 3 has been a tough one today, and when Padraig misses, he misses big.

    ReplyDelete
  48. any AU golfers in the tournament today?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Daughter has gone to B'ham for the Jonas Brother's concert. They stopped at the Galleria for some shopping. She just text me and told me the Hoover football players, cheerleaders and band were there and the football players are signing autographs. Apparently this is their 2nd annual Buc Fan Day. She is now at The Summit!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hey THT, I read with interest that you came to AU planning on being a veterinarian.

So did my lovely bride - she, too, failed in her quest, and left AU without getting accepted into vet school. But she never abandoned her goal, and 10 years after her initial disappointment on the Plains, she received her DVM from Mississippi State.

And thus I'm living every mother's dream - I'm married to a Doctor.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What does it mean when the Chizik Republik winks at you?

    ReplyDelete
  52. THT ...

Jason Dufner went, I think, 79-74 and missed the cut.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jim Nantz said, "Yang." heh heh heh heh.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sheesh, finally! I haven't been able to get on here all day.

Anyway, I chose a nap over Fan Day. Call me what you want, but I stand by my decision.

In case I haven't said, thanks THT for your countdown and Jay for letting you have the space.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Kristina - thanks. And Sunday afternoon naps are required by law, according to MrsTHT.

Freep - I didn't fail in my quest. I just chickened out. During my junior year my arm went somewhere I knew it would have to go in vet school, but where I decided I really didn't want it to go ever again. I switched majors to zoology and didn't pursue the vet school option.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ali G: Why was there so many sick animals in Vietnam?
Vet: There werent that many sick animals in Vietnam.
Ali G: But werent like there millions of Vietnam vets?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Michael, I use to think you were a bit weird. Quoting Ali G confirms my suspicion.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks a lot Monica! Now I can't screw up of I go to the big house ahhaha

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would also like to complement coach Malzahn. He made it through two-a-days without referring to himself as an idiot. Yea, I have small goals for this team.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Great story, Freep! lol

High school football players signing autographs??? sheesh

I don't know what that means, Hag, but that's probably because I'm old.

    ReplyDelete
  61. At 18 Im no longer a minor so the law can screw me now ahhaahah

    ReplyDelete
  62. Okay Mr Jay G. T. I have changed my handle as you suggested.

    ReplyDelete
  63. ENT = otolaryngologist

HABOTN ENT = Earl, not Tim

    ReplyDelete
  64. On the rare occasion when Mr. Zookeeper posts, he posts as Earl....just to add to the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  65. so I guess he's Earl, not Earl not Tim

My dad and I listened to Bama games on the car radio in the early 60's. When Bama played AU, Tucker Fredrickson's name was mentioned often and with respect by the Bama announcers. He was well respected in the NFL even with a bum knee.

Watching Joe Cribbs run for 200 yds against UGA 2 Sanford stadium in 1979 was priceless.

I remember coming home from work one evening during my wife's first year at MSU CVM. She greeted me at the door with a huge smile, and said "I've got good news and bad news. Good news first: I got to palpate a pregnant cow today!" "That's great, honey. . .but what's the bad news?"

"It's your week to do laundry!"

    ReplyDelete
  71. LOL Freep - I enjoy your "My Wife as a Vet Student" stories!

Thanks Hagitty for splainin it to me. I have a feeling the threat of the big house won't slow you down any.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Kristina,
I will be more than happy to once again change my handle. I am a first time contributor and did not know about your husbands handle. I am sorry for the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I am really hoping the season getting started helps our cruitin. We haven't been ranked this low in a lot of years.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Kristina,

    Done and War Eagle.

    ReplyDelete
  75. 57 Tiger - My husband occassionally posts and his name is 57.

    Just sayin.

    :-) War Eagle

    ReplyDelete
  76. Welcome 57! War Eagle!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I was just playin with ya '57.

Welcome to the HABOTN! And War Eagle to you as well!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I am confused.

Tim is Anonymous, except when he's Michael?

Earl is Tim when he's not married to Kristina?

57 is Greg when he's not married to Monica?

I think they're all a part of the Axis of Evil.

    ReplyDelete
  79. less than 3 weeks. outstanding. youo can still get season ticks to the u of az football games---for $92.00 with no donation.

  81. Earl, buddy, I told ya I was confused.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Cool, someone other that me! (or at least in addition to me...)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Is there anyone among our numbers that use IV as a handle? If not, Monica I will be glad to change again. This is getting tiresome.

    ReplyDelete
  84. '57 Tiger - now that's a great handle!
    War Eagle!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Anonymous7:29 PM

Scott...that ticket price example is the beginning of the discussion as to why the SEC is best.

When we lived in Scottsdale, we only found a few CFB (LSU,Ohio St)fans until Mrs. Hoopie started the Phoenix, Az. AU club. There are many great things and folks to enjoy out west...CFB is generally not part of the society mosaic.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Thanks THT.
I am the fourth in line in my family to have my name, ergo IV.

    ReplyDelete
  87. IV - well, you're the first fourth on HABOTN. And I think Omnica was just messin' with your head about '57 Tiger.

    ReplyDelete
  88. THT,
I am just trying to fit in. At 70 years of age, it is hard to do, especially since so many of you are my junior. I was indeed on campus in 1957. What a great year. I was a freshman. Boy what a way to start your Auburn experience, National Champions. WAR EAGLE!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. IV - you're fitting in just fine. I'm not exactly a spring chicken. There are a lot of Auburn youngsters on here; sadly; I'm not one of them. But almost all of us are Auburn Tigers!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Aww, IV, now I feel bad. We were really just messing with you.

Don't you change that handle again!

Well, unless Jay tells you to and then, well, I guess you'll have to.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Welcome IV. If someone doesn't like your name tell them to suck an egg. It's pretty awesome you were around for the '57 season.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I wonder what time Scottie B will be getting home tonight from Fan Day

    ReplyDelete
  93. Anonymous8:00 PM

IV..welcome aboard. I'm 54, so although not as far along as you, I'm older than most on the HABOTN. This place will keep you young. It's a good mixture of silliness and substance done with civility.

Warning: The HABOTN has been accused of being a clique.

    ReplyDelete
  94. THT...

One of your better efforts today. Thanks for the enlightening article.

    ReplyDelete
  95. hey guys I just got on facebook Monica told me last year yall had a group page right or wrong by the way the few times I am on here I am under the name big daddy

    ReplyDelete
  96. Welcome IV ... good to know we have a source of IVs if we get dehydrated.

Welcome to our little corner of the World Wide Spider Web.

    War Eagle. Hate UAT.

    ReplyDelete
  97. ehyou, Kristina and others,
thanks for the welcome. THT, thanks for the daily recollection of some very wonderful memories. Jay. G. Tate, thanks for this site and all that you do to keep us abreast of our special Auburn Tigers. And to all the Hotties young and mature, WAR EAGLE!!! They will make us proud of them this year, I just know they will.

    ReplyDelete
  98. IV did you REALLY think my husband's name was 57??? I was joking with you! Anyway, welcome and War Eagle.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I have a question. Why is Clinton Durst classified as a senior. This is only his second year of participation. Do they have a different way to classify walkons?

    ReplyDelete
  100. Hey Big Daddy Trav - Good to see you coming back around.

    ReplyDelete
  101. You know, school starts tomorrow, and everybody starts showin' up again.

    It's kinda fun.

Except when the Axis of Evil shows up.

    ReplyDelete
  103. monica didnt you say something before about facebook or did I dream that

    ReplyDelete
  104. trav,
