Days to kickoff: 27

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

27

It's another DB trifecta! Yesterday, we had two cornerbacks and a safety. Today, two safeties and a cornerback.

HAPPY BUDDY McCLINTON DAY!!!

Buddy McClinton, all 5'7" and 150 pounds of him, received Auburn's last available scholarship offer when his high school coach, who had been hired as Auburn's freshman coach, convinced Coach Shug Jordan that the product of Lee High School in Montgomery could hang with the big boys in the SEC. He was right. Under the tutelage of secondary coach "Brother Bill" Oliver, McClinton started every single game of his Auburn career. Forty years later, the former safety is still Auburn's all-time career (18) and single-season (9) leader in interceptions. He was named to seven different All-American teams after his senior season in 1969. In 2008, he was named to the 75th Anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team. Buddy's three interceptions against Arizona in the 1968 Sun Bowl earned him an MVP honor -- a Sun Bowl first for a defensive back. Most impressively, McClinton was also an Academic All-American. He has turned his business degree into a highly successful career in commercial real estate; he is President of McClinton & Company, Inc., based in Montgomery.

HONORABLE MENTION:

David King
: Two-time All-SEC cornerback in '83 and '84. Fifth all-time in career interceptions and a member of the University's Dance Troupe.

Johnny Simmons
: Childersburg, Ala., native turned down a lucrative offer as the Kansas City Royals' top draft pick to attend Auburn University. He provided senior leadership to the 1972 Amazin's.

  4. THT is all over these "jersey days," no?

  5. just a little googling and a lot of plagiarizing

    ReplyDelete
  6. no worries, I have been plagiarizing my entire existence via a short Korean dictator....

Goodday THT. Great job on the #'s.

I am excited to see the season unfold. Both from what is delivered on the field, and if that in turn delivers on recruits.

Should be fun or frustrating. : )

  13. THT you're so impressive with these daily countdown pieces. Your awesomeness is shining.

DL - You're the most modest dictator I've ever known personally.

  16. Great suggestions AU1 & Monica.

Omnica, any perceived awesomeness on my part is but a dim nightlight bulb up against your stadium light awesomeness.

  17. I'm not up to speed on the Sidell Corley situation at LSU...supposedly wanting to transfer to be closer to home. If that's the case, why on earth would he consider AU or UA-T, neither are appreciably closer to Mobile than BTR. Anyone know more?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Don't we all make up excuses when we back out of commitments?

I broke up my 8th-grade girlfriend because, as I told her, I wanted to spend more time with my friends.

I had no car and ... no friends.

    She had bad breath. Stanky.

    ReplyDelete
  19. THT thanks so much for your "countdowns".

Yesterday brought back many memories. To be at AU during the early '70's was truly AUsome. Got to witness Sullivan to Beasley, Punt Bama Punt, the Amazins........just wish I had appreciated it more.....ah, but the days of youth. Now I just have to depend on this mind of mine to take me back.

You were probably just a kid but I wished you could have been there for Punt Bama Punt. I know you were in heart. It was one of the best memories of my life....remember it like it was yesterday. One of the best moments in time was the ride back to Auburn from Legion Field. We couldn't wait to get back to AU and par-tay very late into the wee hours of the morn! Everybody was going crazy! I can't honestly tell you how we got back because all the way back to AU cars where blowing horns, people were hanging out the windows screaming WAR EAGLE, cars were stopping in the middle of the road and people were playing musical cars all the way home....with people we didn't even know. It was a blast...everybody was little crazy, giddy, and most likely a wee bit soused!

And that's the way it was...back in the day!

JGT - I just spit out my pizza....now that's funny!

  21. I am developing this theory that Dear Leader and Jay G. Tate are actually the same person.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jay G., per Kathy's bit of info last night....can you find out what facial hair has to do with being big????? That one has me wondering..........

    ReplyDelete
  23. I didn't have to break up with my 8th grade girlfriends cause none of them were aware that they held such a title.

    ReplyDelete
  24. tht .. you have a point there. I think we need to tell Corley that.

Mobile to BR, LA : 220 miles
Mobile to Auburn : 222 miles
Mobile to 'loser : 227 miles.

  25. Is there any way to walk into Costco/Sams without dropping $100? If there is, I haven't figured it out.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I had a lot of trouble finding out much about what occurred at practice yesterday. My theory is that when the players and coaches saw that Jay G. wasn't there to keep an eye on them, they kind of took it easy.

ehyou - Yes, go right to the food court and buy a hotdog and soda for $2.99 and then leave. Walk in a straight line and don't look at anything else.

  28. Here is an interesting way to view the Chizik hire. Viewing things in terms of how we would have felt if Chiz had come straight from Texas or if we had hired Boom is just about the same. Both are very well respected. The Iowa State position actually probably provided a chance for Chizik to be better prepared to come to Auburn. I am definitely becoming a believer in Chizik.

  29. My warehouse was next to Sams in Marietta (cobb parkway). I used to go there 2-3 times a week and just pick up what I needed... keeping my wallet intact.

Now .. Harry's farmers market across the street was whole 'nother story. Organic stuff, veggies, those exotic full of flavorful goodness tropical fruits, that section of aromatic breads and baked goodies, scrumptious salads and seafood and wide variety of cheeses were the things I couldn't resist.

  30. Okay, now I have seen it all, an exercise geegaw called the Neckline Slimmer for a mere $19.95.

Back to regular programming — Go Auburn, Beat Bama!

  31. For notes from a previous thread: Thanks for the thoughts Aero, thanks for the help Monica, thanks for the input Steve.

  32. THT HAHAHAHAHA
That was so cute @ the girlfriends. I had boyfriends like that too! High school was sooo much fun, but sheesh middle school was HARSH! hahaha

  33. MyTommy - my pleasure. Just so glad you and Mrs. Tommy are still with us! Considering those wreck picture's you are lucky you were in a solid car.

    Time to sling some paint.

  34. Time to practice a map talk. Y'all have a great afternoon. I'll be back for practice!

  35. Really enjoyed the article on Eltoro in the MA this morning, Mr. Tate. I even read it in an honest to goodness newspaper. It sounds like the kid has a good head on his shoulders. In particular, I like the fact that he realizes he still has things to learn.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Auburn is up 17-14 over Nebraska in the 2007 Cotton Bowl with a little over 5 minutes left. It looks like we will pull out the win again.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Chizik said he was pleased with practice yesterday. SURE hope this isn't coachspeak for what the hell is going on out there.
Need to keep the hammer down and get this team ready to play every game. Not just now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  38. THT you ROCK!!!

Just got back from Ga spending time with the family. My cousin who has absolutely NO ties to AU (other than me) has a plaque of the 83 Auburn team with a team pic (Bo, L. James, V. Beasely, B. Fullwood, Agee, Kevin Greene, etc) and the schedule with scores for the season.

She keeps the darn thing in a drawer!!! I tried my best to sweet talk it from her but no dice. Any suggestions for getting this away from her??

    ReplyDelete
  39. Read a story in a newspaper?

    It's 1977 again!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Headed up to Auburn momentarily.

See you all in a bit ...

    ReplyDelete
  41. (I hope my 8th-grade girlfriend doesn't read this blog.)

    ReplyDelete
  42. BigCat...simple solution. Just go all Kevin Greene on her one time.

    ReplyDelete
  43. LOL JZ! The only problem with that is I still have a scar on my head from where she hit me with a brick when we were kids.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have read several comments where people are thinking that the QB race is between Todd and Burns. Is anyone else hearing this and what did I miss over the weekend for this to be true?

    ReplyDelete
  45. The race is ... Tyrik the Tyrifik vs. Everybody Else

    ReplyDelete
  46. And the answer is $227.43 of nothing...

Aeronaut - is that not the Harrys that Alton Brown goes to all the time..

AUBIGCAT - got a buddy that "thinks" he is hooked into AU athletics (we all got one of them) he agrees with the Burns / Todd remark....

I just want a general who can run the O, throw deep and not view running as the first option.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Phred- Nail meet head!

Been a busy weekend. Thankful to sit and relax for the rest of the afternoon and watch Tiger win the Firestone. By the way, dropping a $100 on the signing up for dance, leotard and tap shoes for my daughter is always fun. These kids can bleed you of money.

  48. DL

Harry's... whole foods market. etc. Tropical exotic fruits, seafood, etc etc.

Not to be confused with Uncle Harry's.. where your tropical exotics smell like sea food.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It wouldn't surprise me for the Braves to take 3 of 4 at the Dodgers and get swept at home by the Nats.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Aero,

Alton Brown (the food network - good eats) visits that Harry's often while taping his shows....

I have been meaning to drive up that way. I used to go to the one in Alpharetta back in the early 90's that place is way cool

    ReplyDelete
  51. My apologies for not knowing what you were talking about.

Yep. That's Harry's farmer market. There are just 2 remaining, Alpharetta and Marietta. The rest are converted to whole foods.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous4:09 PM

Aero/DL...small world... Back in the day, the Co. I worked for redeveloped that shopping center after Bldr's Sq closed. I handled the use variance, redevelopment and construction to open Harry's. Since escaping Atl, we only make it down there a couple of times/year.

    ReplyDelete
  53. We're looking at an on-time practice today: 4:45 p.m.

    ReplyDelete
  54. would this be the first one?

    ReplyDelete
  55. michael...

That greeting makes me think of Fighter Hayabusa on NES Pro Wrestling. I was pretty much unbeatable with him or Kin Corn Karn.

    ReplyDelete
  56. "A winner is you"

    ReplyDelete
  57. I have read many opinions on who the starting QB will be and after in depth analysis I am certain that nobody knows. I have heard theories. Someone in here the other day was sure Caudle was the guy. The are still the Kodi faithful. Malzahn has said more about Todd than the others, I do believe. I am firmly convinced that nobody knows and just go with rock/paper/scissors.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Saw this on Tweeter: Auburn down to 4 scholarship linebackers at todays practice. Pybus, herring and gaston all out. T'sharvan Bell and Dee ford also out.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anyone in here that is around 220, 6'2", and has any eligibility left, please get to the Auburn athletic complex immediately.
