Hey everyone. Was just browsing the interwebs this evening and found some swell research done by the Orlando Sentinel.(As an aside, that fine publication is commanded by former Auburn beat hack Tim Stephens ... formerly of the Birmingham Post-Herald.)
The Sentinel revealed the salaries of all FBS head coaches.
Chizik, who makes $2 million, is tied for 21st. Not too shabby.

Very interesting blog. I had no idea that there were so few coaches making more than Chizik. A successful season and I can see his salary rising. Charlie Weis is a surprise too. I didn't realize Notre Dame was paying that much.

Today's choice was just as easy as yesterday's. Walter Gilbert is still Auburn's only 3-time ALL-AMERICAN. Shug Jordan referred to the Fairfield, AL, native as "possibly the greatest linebacker-center in the history of Southern football." Two days after graduating from Auburn in 1937, Mr. Gilbert went to work for Texaco. By the time he retired in 1977, Mr. Gilbert was Vice-President in charge of international operations, and head of Texaco's European operations. He took a break from his Texaco job to serve in the Army during World War II, achieving the rank of Major in field artillery. Mr. Gilbert was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1956. In 1981, Auburn University created the Walter Gilbert Award. The award is presented each year to a former Auburn athlete who has demonstrated excellence in their chosen field for 20 or more years. A list of former recipients of the Walter Gilbert Award can be found at this web site
As an example of his footbal prowess, the following quote was lifted from the College Football Hall of Fame web site:
During the 1936 season, Gilbert played the entire game in six consecutive contests. After the Louisiana State game, Sports Editor Bill Blake wrote, "LSU put two men on Gilbert for 60 minutes and he took a terrific pounding, but he never stopped charging through to nail the ball-carrier. Our personal statistics had Gilbert with half the tackles as well as intercepting two enemy passes. There is none who can equal the Auburn center."

I really like the idea of paying the HC less and spreading the wealth to the assistants. AU and UT have each taken this approach. Hope it works for AU...don't care what happens at UT.

ReplyDeleteAs for the "overpaid," many of them were played handsomely for potential -- not unlike first round draft choices in the pros. Time catches up with them.

ReplyDeletei need to do a 10K run or so. i've been doing a lot more running since we've had Tucker. he's a pretty good running partner. i'm not much of a fan at getting out before 6am but i guess it's worth it.

ReplyDeleteWe lived in Tennessee until 6th grade. My dad is a UT grad although not a huge fan. Didn't really know anything about college football until moving to Alabama.
One of my younger sister's favorite color was red, so she chose Alabama to cheer. My favorite color was blue and so I chose Auburn. That is how I became an Auburn fan, a color choice!
I wish I enjoyed running, but I just hate it. And it kills my joints. Running on the elliptical is about as good as I get. But, it is air conditioned and I can watch TV, so there are advantages :)

It's truly amazing how much more UAT garb there was than 2 and 3 years ago. I'm happy to say that AU is still just as well represented despite the "down" perception.

Scottie B & Cincy - I've said it before and I'll say it again, I do not enjoy running while I'm doing it. But; when I'm finished, regardless of the distance, I'm always glad I did it. Running on a treadmill wreaked havoc on my joints too and I even got a nasty case of shin splints which I can tell you is quite painful. I've been taking something called "Move Free" for a few months and my knees haven't bothered me a bit since I started it. It's a supplement which you can get just about anywhere, I highly recommend it.
ReplyDeleteEddie - yep, that'll be my first full length marathon. I've done a few Halfs, several 10Ks and more miles of just me running than I can recall. The organized events are really about the only time I enjoy running. I like passing people and I like trying to improve on my last official time.

ReplyDeleteI do great as long as I stick to the elliptical and I can get a pretty good workout on that. It was just running on the pavement that was hurting my knees and ankles. But, I will remember the joint supplement for the future.
I am going to take Monica's advice and get fitted for some good shoes. Hopefully that will prevent any problems as I move into my second 50 years!

ReplyDelete2009 ends with Notre Dame in shambles and they run Charlie back to the NFL. The Golden Domers are then spurned by Urban Meyer and they go for the next best option (in their minds) - St. Nick himself.
The Bammers would all convert to Protestantism just to spite.

ReplyDeleteFor running (and I can only assume it applies elsewhere), you absolutely MUST spend some $ on shoes. I had sticker shock when I bought my first real pair of quality running shoes. At least for the first and second pair, I'd highly recommend seeing someone at a running store. Not the kid working part time at Sports Authority. Thereafter, you may find you can sort it out more on your own.
ReplyDeleteEddie - there are quite a few running specialty stores in the ATL area. I go to Fleet Feet because they're pretty convenient to me. I believe they have a handful of locations in the area. I'm on about my 6th consecutive pair of Mizuno running shoes but there are plenty of good ones. Just talk to someone who knows what they're doing. They should watch you run a bit to get an idea of your gait then they'll have some suggestions for you.
There's another 1/2 Marathon on 10/31 on the Silver Comet trail. I've run it a few times, you might consider that one too. It's mostly flat and you can get a good finish time out of it.

A thought ... Walter Gilbert is from Fairfield, Alabama, which is also the hometown of James Owens, uncle of LaDarius Owens, who is from Bessemer, which is next to Fairfield.
I just don't want THT to feel like he's got to make that happen every single day.

ReplyDeleteI have seen quotes saying Malzahn wants to decide on a QB within a couple of weeks, but I will be surprised if we know that quickly.
I also am very interested to see which freshmen will play this season. I would count Benton as a for sure, but Blake is a maybe. Benton has to play now. They probably have rules against players playing while eligible for social security.
I would also like a more definitive statement on Savage's injury. Put some duct tape on it and let him go. We need all the players we can get this season.
ReplyDeleteSteve- I feel pretty good about both Blake and Benton playing this year and i'm also willing to bet that Rollison gets meaningful snaps. I could be completely wrong, but I'll stick with my gut on this.

ReplyDeleteEddie, I think you are dead on about Rollison or at least Rollison or Moseley getting snaps this season. My take from the spring was that Malzahn wasn't that happy with Burns or Caudle. If he saw one of them as potentially the starter, I believe he would have picked one.
ReplyDeleteHow long Trotter remained in the mix is also a good indication. Trotter wasn't a highly regarded QB out of highschool. Either you believe we have 3 great QBs that are hard to pick from or you believe Malzahn didn't see a starter in the bunch. I am more leaning to him not seeing a starter in the bunch, which is sad, but probably realistic.

ReplyDeleteIf they don't consider Caudle a good choice as a backup, I can see Rollison getting significant snaps early. Todd may look healed, but I wouldn't count on any starting QB finishing the season without getting banged up.

ReplyDeleteMy biggest fear is Todd being the starter for 3 or 4 games and that being it. Our schedule is much easier the first half of the season. That time should be used making sure the starter is good to go for the second half. Actually, the games against Tennessee and Arkansas will probably define whether this season is a success of not. Win both of those and we are looking pretty good. Lose both and it's Shreveport.

ReplyDeleteI am listenign to Supersport 930 and just heard a guy predict a big 2 win season for MSU. Previously, when MSU was showing off their new uniforms, I saw a player predict a national championship. Something has to give here.
