Gene Chizik isn't exactly poor

Hey everyone. Was just browsing the interwebs this evening and found some swell research done by the Orlando Sentinel.

(As an aside, that fine publication is commanded by former Auburn beat hack Tim Stephens ... formerly of the Birmingham Post-Herald.)

The Sentinel revealed the salaries of all FBS head coaches.

Chizik, who makes $2 million, is tied for 21st. Not too shabby.

Here's all the people above Chizik. Click this link for the whole thing.

NOTE TO SELF: Find Kirk Ferentz's agent and convince him to represent me.

  1. Not bad for someone who hasn't posted at all lately.

And Ferentz and Weis both are way overpaid.

  2. Very interesting blog. I had no idea that there were so few coaches making more than Chizik. A successful season and I can see his salary rising. Charlie Weis is a surprise too. I didn't realize Notre Dame was paying that much.

  3. HAPPY WALTER GILBERT DAY!!!

    T-minus 33 days til kickoff.

Today's choice was just as easy as yesterday's. Walter Gilbert is still Auburn's only 3-time ALL-AMERICAN. Shug Jordan referred to the Fairfield, AL, native as "possibly the greatest linebacker-center in the history of Southern football." Two days after graduating from Auburn in 1937, Mr. Gilbert went to work for Texaco. By the time he retired in 1977, Mr. Gilbert was Vice-President in charge of international operations, and head of Texaco's European operations. He took a break from his Texaco job to serve in the Army during World War II, achieving the rank of Major in field artillery. Mr. Gilbert was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1956. In 1981, Auburn University created the Walter Gilbert Award. The award is presented each year to a former Auburn athlete who has demonstrated excellence in their chosen field for 20 or more years. A list of former recipients of the Walter Gilbert Award can be found at this web site

As an example of his footbal prowess, the following quote was lifted from the College Football Hall of Fame web site:
During the 1936 season, Gilbert played the entire game in six consecutive contests. After the Louisiana State game, Sports Editor Bill Blake wrote, "LSU put two men on Gilbert for 60 minutes and he took a terrific pounding, but he never stopped charging through to nail the ball-carrier. Our personal statistics had Gilbert with half the tackles as well as intercepting two enemy passes. There is none who can equal the Auburn center."

    WARRRRRR EAGLE!!!
    GO TIGERS!!!

  4. JayGT - you might want to rethink that. I think Kirk Ferentz is paid in corn. $3.3 million cash? For that? No way!

  6. Good choice, THT. The dude was a success everywhere he went.

( I hope you are saving these little informative notes somewhere.. or maybe jot them down in numerical order in a blog or something)

'eres to #33 and Texaco's European operations.

Why don't they have Alcoholic bowls anymore? The Bacardi Bowl sounds like fun, or the Jose Cuervo Bowl, etc.

Good morning, Hotties! Great work on Walter Gilbert, TarHeel!

    ReplyDelete
  8. What up gang? I'm looking forward to this week! THT, excellent post as always, I enjoy learning about former Auburn players and tradition, it's good for a new fan.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I want to throw an honorable mention on the # 33 out to James Bostic.

By the way, did anyone ever expect to see the day where Rugters coach would make more than Auburn's coach?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good morning everyone! I hope all is well on this fine monday. Football practice starts this week. It is finally here, so hopefully we will have some fun things to chat about from now on, like Chris Todd's new rocket arm. Sweet.

Rolling with Rollison '09 Express is still alive and well. Get on board, the train is about to leave the station.

  11. Good morning Hotties - it's Monday, I'm watching my boy eat his breakfast and watch some infuriating and mind-numbing show. I did manage to get to watch both some golf and some baseball with him yesterday. So there.

Have a fine day doing what you do. Except for Jet. Jet, today I want you to have a GREAT day.

You weren't expecting that one. I know you weren't.

    Keep Hate Alive.

  12. Hey gang, and a great Walter Gilbert day to everyone!!

Just for wondering, where would coach Tubbs have been placed on that list if he were still at AU?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Norm- I saw will you will be running the marathon in Atl on T-Day. I plan on running the half version that same day and probably same race. Good luck, should be fun.

Mrtommy- The answer would have been too high.

I really like the idea of paying the HC less and spreading the wealth to the assistants. AU and UT have each taken this approach. Hope it works for AU...don't care what happens at UT.

Gotta run Hotties.....may the Hate be with you.

  15. Mike Gundy may be a man -- he might even be more than 40 years old -- but in the economy of college football, he's not well paid.

As for the "overpaid," many of them were played handsomely for potential -- not unlike first round draft choices in the pros. Time catches up with them.

    ReplyDelete
  16. happy Walter Gilbert Day! yippee. nice choice.

i'll throw out an Honorable-Mention to the pride of Alexander City, AL, #33 Eric Brock. he was one of my favorite players on the team a few years back. his mother works at Russell Athletic down in Alex City too.

    ReplyDelete
  17. THT,
How could I forget Walter Gilbert - great choice!

But, I would like to add my shout out to WERK for James Bostic. I was alive to see him play, unlike Walter and boy was he fun to watch.

I really enjoy your player synopsis each day. I've been an Auburn fan since the 6th grade, but I am still learning lots!

    ReplyDelete
  18. 6th grade? what took you so long Cincy? ;)

i need to do a 10K run or so. i've been doing a lot more running since we've had Tucker. he's a pretty good running partner. i'm not much of a fan at getting out before 6am but i guess it's worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. scottie b,

We lived in Tennessee until 6th grade. My dad is a UT grad although not a huge fan. Didn't really know anything about college football until moving to Alabama.

One of my younger sister's favorite color was red, so she chose Alabama to cheer. My favorite color was blue and so I chose Auburn. That is how I became an Auburn fan, a color choice!

  20. I wish I enjoyed running, but I just hate it. And it kills my joints. Running on the elliptical is about as good as I get. But, it is air conditioned and I can watch TV, so there are advantages :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Great choice THT they don't make them like that anymore.
JGT good information and the bammers had me believing Saban was number one. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  22. Good morning everyone.

  23. June Jones is making 2 million dollars? He sure seems out of place on that list.

  24. Good morning all!!

Back from a week @ PCB.

It's truly amazing how much more UAT garb there was than 2 and 3 years ago. I'm happy to say that AU is still just as well represented despite the "down" perception.

Yes, Dear Leader, it is August yet and football is upon us. Looking forward to some practice updates this week.

THT - thanks for the introduction to Walter Gilbert. It's nice to have something in common with such outstanding folks.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Scottie B & Cincy - I've said it before and I'll say it again, I do not enjoy running while I'm doing it. But; when I'm finished, regardless of the distance, I'm always glad I did it. Running on a treadmill wreaked havoc on my joints too and I even got a nasty case of shin splints which I can tell you is quite painful. I've been taking something called "Move Free" for a few months and my knees haven't bothered me a bit since I started it. It's a supplement which you can get just about anywhere, I highly recommend it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Eddie - yep, that'll be my first full length marathon. I've done a few Halfs, several 10Ks and more miles of just me running than I can recall. The organized events are really about the only time I enjoy running. I like passing people and I like trying to improve on my last official time.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Norm wants to pass me on T-Day. Wonder if he will shove me out of the way? Serious question, i'm looking to buy my first real pair of good running shoes and i'm leaning toward asics. What are your thoughts and places to go to get fitted?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Norm,
I do great as long as I stick to the elliptical and I can get a pretty good workout on that. It was just running on the pavement that was hurting my knees and ankles. But, I will remember the joint supplement for the future.

I am going to take Monica's advice and get fitted for some good shoes. Hopefully that will prevent any problems as I move into my second 50 years!

I find no shame in admitting that the following is a small fantasy of mine.

2009 ends with Notre Dame in shambles and they run Charlie back to the NFL. The Golden Domers are then spurned by Urban Meyer and they go for the next best option (in their minds) - St. Nick himself.

The Bammers would all convert to Protestantism just to spite.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sensi, that kind of talk just makes us Auburn fans look foolish.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sean- You mean like a prominent alabama media figure printing a column stating that Urban Meyer was heading to ND at the end of the year because he was scared of St. Nick?

    ReplyDelete
  34. i dunno Sean. i kinda dig it. that scenario would be pretty funny.

  35. THT et al:

Would you all like to run the Jersey Day thing as a HABOTN feature? It's really cool and I worry that some people miss it here in the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'd put them on the front ...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jay G- Put them on the front. I think most people that visit will find them entertaining. I look forward to each day seeing what THT says. I thought he could of found someone better for #34, but oh well :)!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. For running (and I can only assume it applies elsewhere), you absolutely MUST spend some $ on shoes. I had sticker shock when I bought my first real pair of quality running shoes. At least for the first and second pair, I'd highly recommend seeing someone at a running store. Not the kid working part time at Sports Authority. Thereafter, you may find you can sort it out more on your own.

Eddie - there are quite a few running specialty stores in the ATL area. I go to Fleet Feet because they're pretty convenient to me. I believe they have a handful of locations in the area. I'm on about my 6th consecutive pair of Mizuno running shoes but there are plenty of good ones. Just talk to someone who knows what they're doing. They should watch you run a bit to get an idea of your gait then they'll have some suggestions for you.

There's another 1/2 Marathon on 10/31 on the Silver Comet trail. I've run it a few times, you might consider that one too. It's mostly flat and you can get a good finish time out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. yup. THT's got front page material for sure. i'm usually up on all the comments but sometimes i've got to search for a while to find it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks Norm. I'll look into the Commet Trail 1/2 marathon, but I have a feeling that Football might interfere with that one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. and JG, what's up with your boy Bag dissing on LA TECH? they ain't chumps. not this year anyways.

    Moon:
"Louisiana Tech: This is your opener? Do better.
    AU 89, La. Tech 7"

i would LOVE that score but come on, that's a bit crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think Bag's missed the boat on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jay G ... the jersey day countdown is would be appreciated.

Norm ... from the heart of my bottom, thanks for the well wishes.

Eddie ... Norm carries a cattle prod with him during his competitive runs.

A thought ... Walter Gilbert is from Fairfield, Alabama, which is also the hometown of James Owens, uncle of LaDarius Owens, who is from Bessemer, which is next to Fairfield.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I just don't want THT to feel like he's got to make that happen every single day.

    ReplyDelete
  45. And, yeah, Bag misses things at times. This La Tech team doesn't suck at all.

    ReplyDelete
  46. THT, thanks for the info. Is there a secret handshake you have to know to find these things?

    ReplyDelete
  47. JG,

You doing the show with Bag today? I know you mentioned last week that they wanted you on there today.

    ReplyDelete
  48. JG, i would agree but THT hasn't missed a day in 66 days. i think he's good to go.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jet & Eddie - yes, I do carry a cattle prod during my competitive runs. I also carry a small wristrocket slingshot. I'm not very fast, I have to do something to better my chances.

    ReplyDelete
  50. will la tech be favored in the opener?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Norm- Images of RK's avatar come to mind with that! :)!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. boobmain- I think Auburn will / is favored already.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm going to guess since Vegas has very little knowledge of LaTech it'll be Auburn -13.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes JGT put the jersy count down on the cover sheet with THT's permission of course.
I enjoy reading them as I am sure all others do.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Where did everyone go?

    ReplyDelete
  56. THT just called me and said he's good with the cover story idea.

Ok...he didn't really, but those new nuggets are really well written and informative.

    ReplyDelete
  57. On the first week of football, it sure is dead here. Oh well. I guess it's to be expected.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Working hard today Eddie, but I am seriously pumped for the beginning of practice. I am just not sure how quickly we will see some answers, particularly at QB.

I have seen quotes saying Malzahn wants to decide on a QB within a couple of weeks, but I will be surprised if we know that quickly.

I also am very interested to see which freshmen will play this season. I would count Benton as a for sure, but Blake is a maybe. Benton has to play now. They probably have rules against players playing while eligible for social security.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would also like a more definitive statement on Savage's injury. Put some duct tape on it and let him go. We need all the players we can get this season.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Steve- I feel pretty good about both Blake and Benton playing this year and i'm also willing to bet that Rollison gets meaningful snaps. I could be completely wrong, but I'll stick with my gut on this.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Here is an Auburn preview that is probably very unreliable, but it is reading anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Eddie, I think you are dead on about Rollison or at least Rollison or Moseley getting snaps this season. My take from the spring was that Malzahn wasn't that happy with Burns or Caudle. If he saw one of them as potentially the starter, I believe he would have picked one.

    ReplyDelete
  63. How long Trotter remained in the mix is also a good indication. Trotter wasn't a highly regarded QB out of highschool. Either you believe we have 3 great QBs that are hard to pick from or you believe Malzahn didn't see a starter in the bunch. I am more leaning to him not seeing a starter in the bunch, which is sad, but probably realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Jay G trying to kill my Rollison dream. Not going to let it happen!

    ReplyDelete
  65. If they don't consider Caudle a good choice as a backup, I can see Rollison getting significant snaps early. Todd may look healed, but I wouldn't count on any starting QB finishing the season without getting banged up.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Steve, we agree. Mark this day down. It doesn't happen often :)!

    ReplyDelete
  67. My biggest fear is Todd being the starter for 3 or 4 games and that being it. Our schedule is much easier the first half of the season. That time should be used making sure the starter is good to go for the second half. Actually, the games against Tennessee and Arkansas will probably define whether this season is a success of not. Win both of those and we are looking pretty good. Lose both and it's Shreveport.

  69. I am listenign to Supersport 930 and just heard a guy predict a big 2 win season for MSU. Previously, when MSU was showing off their new uniforms, I saw a player predict a national championship. Something has to give here.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Steve- They will probably meet in the middle somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I just have a hard time seeing a player going to MSU and anticipating playing for a national championship. I assumed MSU players hoped to get to a decent bowl game.
