Post-practice reaction, 8/6

Hey everyone. I didn't hear a lot of interesting stuff tonight. It happens.

Here's a roundup:
  • WR DeAngelo Benton and CB Demond Washington spent the entire practice on the field today. You know how the team has been splitting into two groups -- one on the field and one in the weight room? Not for those two. Gene Chizik said he's just trying to give assistant coaches more time to assess those two guys.

  • OL Aubrey Phillips confirmed that his friend (and Auburn signee) Daren Bates has been cleared by the NCAA. Bates is supposed to begin his college career tomorrow.

  • Auburn moves to "shells" (shoulder pads and helmets) for practice tomorrow. Chizik didn't seem dead-set on getting his team into full pads ASAP. ``We'll just wait and play it by ear and see what the health of our team is," he said.

  • LB Joshua Bynes on fellow LB Eltoro Freeman, who now is working with the No. 1 defense at weak-side linebacker: ``He’s still about the same to me. He’s still the type of guy who doesn’t like to mess up. He likes to be perfect. He’s still fast. He’s electrifying to watch and every drill he does, he likes to be full speed."

  • Bynes had some not-so-nice things to say about former defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads' defensive approach. Rhoads now is head coach at Iowa State. I hear that's a plum job; a place for winners.

Anyway, here's how Bynes described the difference between Rhoads and current Auburn defensive czar Ted Roof: ``Roof is the type of guy who will let us go full speed. If you miss, at least you miss full speed. Rhoads was the type who wanted us to break down and make sure we make the proper tackle."

There's a chance that THT could be espousing the virtues of #21 in the coming decades. I sure hope so.

Hitting or missing tackles at full speed embodies Auburn football. I am a Roof philosophy proponent.

I'm not completely sure I like Bynes comment about Rhodes. I distinctly remember Bynes attempting to throw down John Parker during the Iron Bowl last year, and in his fit of intensity start celebrating while in the meantime JPW didn't go down and completed a long pass on what should've been a huge loss.

KMo:

The former coaches are always the first ones to be thrown under the bus. I thought Auburn had a good defense last year. The offensive ineptitude wore them down as the year went on.

9:39 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

As long as they are wrapping up and tackling at full speed, then I'm fine with it...if all they are doing is throwing a shoulder into someone and bouncing off of them at full speed, then there is a problem.

9:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Rhoads was a very good coach. Different philosophies doesn't mean one if right and one is wrong.

9:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

KMo makes a good point. Our linebacker bouncing off JPW was very embarrassing.

9:44 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Chizik's DB philosophy was a bit different than Boom's. Boom had his DBs in tight coverage and occasionally gave up big plays. Chiz was more about making them pay for touching the ball. Both philosophies worked.

9:47 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I would remove the "very" and say Rhodes was a good coach.

Occasionally you have to blitz, and he never seemed to want to do that.

Fundamentally he was very strong, we didn't miss tackles until late in the season when the D was just too tired to care.

9:48 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'd take Chiz coaching the secondary and Boom coaching the front 7.

That would be the perfect combo.

9:49 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I preferred Chizik as a DC, but Muschamp was definitely a great one too.

9:52 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

I acknowledge Muschamp's coaching ability. His sideline personality was obscene and unacceptable to me.

10:08 PM
Blogger Dan Armstrong said...

Evening hotsters:

I kind of liked Muschamp's intensity on the sideline, although I didn't care for an AU coach launching f-bombs for ESPN mikes to pick up.

I did not like his philosophy of allowing the deep ball to kill us....a lot. He also had a tendency to forget that it was a bad thing for UGA to score points. Other than that he was great.

after reviewing the videos for the day, it seems quite obvious to me that Caudle has much better technique than Burns. Now if he can throw the ball to his own receivers. Did anyone listen to the audio in the clips. Coaches were telling the QB to lead the WR's more. Burns threw behind a couple of guys and jsut seems to have trouble throwing the ball. almost like he is forcing it.

I think Rhoads was the perfect medicine for the D last year. They had gotten sloppy and undisciplined in many ways the couple of years before (though still quite impressive most of the time). It may not have been a fun way to be coached, but I think using the right technique and being disciplined in practice pays off in the game.

That being said, it can also be a good thing to have a looser coach follow a tighter coach. Much like republicans and democrats rotating in power, it is a good thing to have things run from a different point of view from time to time.

Just watched the clip from yesterday. It looked to me that Neil has the Much easier throwing motion and mechanics - it looks effortless. Kodi looks to me as he is working to throw the ball - lots of extra movement in his throw. The little on the tape seemed Neil threw a more catchable ball too.

Just an observation from an ex-midget football QB .....

HAPPY DUKE DONALDSON DAY!!

The Cairo, GA, native arrived on the plains in the fall of 1984, along with fellow Georgian Kevin Porter. Although Duke was generally overshadowed by fellow receivers Lawyer Tillman and Freddie Weygand, he did lead the Tigers in receptions during the 1987 season.

Honorable mentions to LB Derrick Graves and RB Chris Linderman. Any other 29 shout outs?

WARRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!

p.s. he's not a former Tiger, but day 29 can't go by without me giving a shout out to Felipe Alou.
p.p.s. The competition for tomorrow is just too keen. We may have to have a cage match tonight to sort it all out.

6:39 AM

I just watched the Burns/Caudle video and I must agree with everyone's assessment. I don't know a whole about football, but it seemed that Neil's throwing motion was much more fluid than Kodi's. It also seemed like there was more "oomph" on the ball.

First USA Today Poll is out for consumption.

Don't be surprised our Auburn Tigers did not make the Top 25. They won't be cracking it all year.

La. Tech is loaded with talent. Talent that beat an SEC team we got by 3-2 last year.

West Virginia boatraced us and they are not going to drop as far as some think.

We should handle Mississippi State and Ball State.

Tennessee is a toss up to me.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

HH- I'll give you that La Tech is a good team and a dangerous game for us. We still have way more fire power than they do as far as personnel goes and we should win. We may not win, but we should. Miss State will be pretty bad this year, just too much culture shock going on there and playing them early is a lot better than playing them later. West Virginia lost 4 Offensive lineman and it's Star QB that will force them to change their offense to be a more balanced team. I understand they still have the lethal Noel Devine, but this game is more of a toss-up situation than us just being the dogs. Ball State was good last year, but it lost a ton, we should win.

7:35 AM
Blogger Dan Armstrong said...

Good morning everyone:

Even as snakebit, injury prone and dysfuntional as we were last year, we still had double digit halftime leads in 5 of our 7 losses. This is not a team devoid of talent. Thin yes but not tragically so.

La. Tech 21 Auburn 14
Auburn 24 MSU 3

Auburn 23 Ball State 14

My predictions on the first 4 games scores.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ole Miss will be 8-4 or 9-3, because that's what Nutt does no matter how much talent he has.

If we don't score more than 24 on a Ball State team that lost everything from their good year last year, then Gus isn't as good as advertised.

In the first 5 games, I think we can be anywhere from 5-0 to 3-2.

The West Virginia game is intriguing, because they are breaking in a new QB and I'm guessing his first road game will be at JH, so that can be pretty intimidating, especially at night.

8:01 AM

West Virginia's new QB isn't that new. He played a lot for the oft injured Patrick White.

Ole Miss is better than people think. Though Nutt's underachievement is legendary.

This is where you lost me.

UT has just as many question marks and depth concerns as we do, all the concerns you had about Auburn are the exact concerns that UT has.

So after spending all summer talking trash about Florida, you think UT is going to go to the swamp and beat Flordia? UF has probably spent all summer working on beating UT. Kiffin's quotes are probably all over the weight room and locker room. That game isn't going to be pretty.

8:21 AM
Blogger patdyeswildturkey said...

BHam News had a good article on your depth issues. Saying as of today, we will start the season with 75 players and the league cap is normally 85. They went over the numbers from the last four recruiting classes. So if anyone wants to play or transfer, walk on to Auburn this is the time to do it.
