I am curious if there are any other positions Kodi might be suited for. My guess would be possibly h-back, but more ideally safety. He is a bit small for an h-back, but rugged.

I've had a couple.

Listen: Chris Todd's arm is completely healed, and he will throw laser's like your mom's poolboy kills algae, and Auburn WILL RISE!

Seriously though, we will lose no more than two games. Want to know why? Because Jay G has convinced me Ontario McIrishman is fast and will win the heisman and shock the world. War Eagle!

12:18 AM
Blogger michael said...

Normally I would spell check to make sure I spelled Ontario McIrishman's name correctly, but not tonight. I'm like Malzahn. I make a decision and go with it. None of this waiting til opening day and platooning peops/name researching crap.

12:21 AM

It was wonderful to see Malzahn stick to his word and make a decision. I am very excited about this season now.

The payoff is nice. But I always felt like Todd was the fallback plan if none of the other more physically talented players could get it together, so it is a little disappointing. Kind of like going to prom with that ugly girl you are buddies with since someone else asked out that hot girl you had been stalking for some time. It doesn't mean prom won't still be fun, but boy, this girl's face could scare the paint off a house.

12:28 AM

I am not convinced Todd isn't the most talented of the returning three. I think his arm is better than any of us anticipated.

Thanks for all the great work Jay on what I know is going to be a late night for you. It is much appreciated.

12:48 AM

Steve, I think he is the most talented, and that is what disappoints me.

At least Tony Franklin's dumbass quotient went down 2% with this decision. Apparently it wasn't his man-love of Chris Todd that caused him to name Todd starter last year as so many Hotties suspected.

By that same token, Borges' dumbass quotient raised 3% with this call. Burns didn't make 3rd string QB this year. What the heck was he doing playing his freshman year over Cox for a bit there?

I think Tuberville had a man crush on Kodi. While I believe Jay when he says Tuberville didn't meddle with the offense, I think he occasionally did things at a high level, like when Franklin claimed Tuberville told him to put Burns in. Tuberville would have been better off if he had just let his OCs do their job and held them accountable.

Kodi has a lot of talent, possibly the most talent of our QBs. Talent isn't enough. Smart decision making and good technique can override talent, and I think that is what happened here. Kodi should have been brought along more slowly. Playing him as a freshman was a bad idea and likely cost us the MSU game. Cox had issues early with two INTs, although only one was his fault. The other was a tipped ball. We should have stuck with Cox, another good but underappreciated QB.

Just saw y'all don't have to track down my 12:13 a.m. (EDT) post on a prior thread...

T-minus 22 days til kickoff!!!

HAPPY BRENT FULLWOOD DAY!!!

I must admit, I feel a little uneasy honoring Mr. Fullwood. Despite his many accomplishments on the gridiron, his highly publicized decision to play hooky from class his senior season (at that time it was not a violation of NCAA rules) still bothers me. Mr. Fullwood, come back to Auburn and get that degree!

Brent Fullwood was fast, almost Bo fast. The native of Kissimmee, FL ranks 6th in career rushing yards at Auburn. He was a consensus All-American and All-SEC player his senior season, leading the country with an 8.3 yards per carry average. He placed 6th in Heisman balloting that year and was the 4th overall selection in the NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. He made the 1989 NFL Pro Bowl Team as a FB. Honest!.

Honorable mention:
Mitzi Jackson, my personal favorite and a native of DeFuniak Springs, FL. A great runner whose AU career was limited by injuries. I think he was #22, but not absolutely certain....it's been a long time!

Tre Smith - 2002 Iron Bowl, nuf said.

Casinious Moore - Anniston RB lettered in 2000 and 2001.

Danny Arnold - DB from the '70s; his two INTs led the team in 1976.

Gabe Gross - was in the rotating quarterback position at Auburn in 1998, then decided to concentrate on baseball. It must have been the right choice, 'cause he's still in the Big Leagues.

6:01 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Wow, that previous thread was pretty brutal. A lot of people just ripping on the decision rather than giving an argument for the QB they thought was best.

For those upset that Todd is a senior and believe it made more sense to get someone experience for years to come. This staff wants to win now, and they fell Todd gives them the best chance.

Also, I'm guessing they will be working Rollison into the game as much as they can to give him experience, maybe like Ohio State did last year with Terrell Pryor.

Good morning, Hooties! What day is it?

Just to reiterate what you guys have said: Kodi is definitely a class act and embodies the true spirit of Auburn University.

6:15 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is how I'm looking at the decision for the starting QB: I was furious when AU hired Chizik. Now, with the hires he's made for his assistants, I think AU made the right hire. I'm going to learn from that, and hope that Todd has a fantastic senior
season.

Happy Brent Fullwood day, and that little monster, Tre Smith day.

I'll always have a lot of respect for Tre Smith. He was one of the bravest, gustiest guys I've ever seen. Pocket Hercules, never backed down from a challenge. He competed, and sometimes beat Ronnie and Caddie in practices.

You can catch Tre Smith making a name for himself again, with Hamilton Tiger Cats in CFL. The guy is a fearless and true, embodying the Auburn spirit.

War Eagle.

6:37 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

What a day to be away from the computer!

Anyways, after quickly catching up on things, i'm happy with the decision on Chris Todd and I still maintain that Rollison will play this year and probably start a game and also be ready to lead this team next year and on.

As far as Burns, i'm happy that he is trying to stick around and help the team, but if this WR experiment doesn't work out, I still bet he transfer, I could be wrong and I hope I am. I'm impressed that he spoke about unification of the team and I hope that he is able to contribute this season.

6:38 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Luv,

I should rephrase... It was 4 or 5 people posting a lot instead of a lot of people posting.

Aero,

Tre will always have a place in Auburn history for his 2002 Iron Bowl.

I will also remember how much he scared me as a punt returner. He'd fair catch ones where he had 20 yards of free field and he'd try to return the ones where people were right on him. That 2003 LSU game was brutal on him as a returner.

Chris Todd's voice reminds me so much of the guy who played Matt Saracen on Friday Night Lights (TV version).

6:54 AM

Sensi...

Hmmm- Chris Todd = Matt Saracen in his Sr. Year.

Tyrik Rollison = J.D. McCoy

If you watch the show, that's pretty much how I think this year will go for us in the QB drama.

6:55 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are right, RK. I can't believe I forgot that.

The actor that plays Saracen is from Illinois. Maybe that's it.

6:55 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

But, if my not-so-wonderful-memory serves me correctly, wasn't J.D. made the starter and he screwed up so Coach Taylor put Matt back in?

6:58 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think Rollison gets the treatment that Prior got last year at Ohio State.

Please don't give me the "it'll waste his redshirt" stuff, or the "why use Todd, he's a senior, he only has one year" stuff either.

If these coaches do their job, we'll always have a good QB lined up in the future.

7:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok, it was just a voice reference.

Yes, Luv, but there were other circumstances.

For instance, I doubt Chris Todd is dating Chizik's daughter.

Moving on...

7:01 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Luv- At the very end of the season, he did.

7:01 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

RE: Tre Smith. I agree with all of the above. Great guy, but the 2002 Iron Bowl wasn't his only staring role. How about the go-ahead touchdown flip in the 2006 Florida game after the blocked punt? Talk about going out with a bang.

As for Chris Todd - experience is everything. Kodi was probably pulled aside and given a heart to heart on where he saw himself going in the next level. Even people as talented as Matt Jones and Chris Leak don't make it as QBs in the NFL. Not that Todd will make it either, but Kodi still has a great chance,... just not as a QB.

While I like Kodi and still think he could do great things at QB, he just hasn't shown the consistancy necessary to win the job. I hate it for him, but I have to admit the truth of the matter.

War Eagle! At least this regime can make decisions on time.

After scrolling thru the comments yesterday, ouch, that's all I have to say. That may be the most brutal thread i've read in quite awhile.

7:03 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- I've seen Rollison in that same roll as Pryor last season with OSU too. This year for Rollison will be about getting meaningful experience and being ready to either lead late in the season or next season. That has been my theory for a long time and I will keep maintaining it.

As far as all the gloom and doomers, I think it's a little bit early to be heading to the bridge. This team can and will be competitive.

7:07 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I hope Kodi does well at WR, but I see his speed while good for a QB, being a problem at WR and he needs to learn to run with the ball far more blanced than he did at QB.

However, I want the kid to succeed, I'm just stunned that he's not transferring.

7:08 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kodi Burns has just earned a huge amount of respect, at least by me. His unselfishness and teamwork I hope is used by coaches to describe how an Auburn athlete should represent.

7:10 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now the fans should step up and behave like KB and throw 100% of the support behind Todd. Even if you don't agree with the move.

7:10 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I feel more comfortable with Todd back there than Burns, however Todd did have one of the worst passes I've ever seen last year vs Arkansas. He was trying to get the ball out of bounds, but his shoulder wouldn't let him and it went straight to a DB. Hopefully those shoulder problems are healed.

3 weeks from now we'll be talking about the South Carolina/NC State game from the night before and getting ready for kickoff the next day.

"Burns burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2007, when he started the Tigers' September win against Mississippi State."

Kodi came off the bench to give us the lead, but he struggled after his first couple of drives and we were Croomed. Cox finished that game driving us into FG range then he threw a one hopper on the last play of the game far in front of the endzone.

Kodi started the next week vs New Mexico State, but struggled in it as well and Cox came off the bench.

Things are shaping up very nicely for the Tigers to parallel 1993 (sans TB, thankfully). All the under the radar talent, their widely dismissed status (inferior to MSU??!!!), and the outstanding leadership and team dynamics (see Kodi Burns) bode well for Auburn this year. With luck on the injury front we will shock the conference.

Extremely classy and mature move by Kodi Burns. We have not heard the last from him - he will make meaningful contributions this year at the QB position.

How the heck this gives us two more wins is beyond me...and while there may be some fine similarities in attitude between the 2004 and 2009 team, the talent difference is monumental. I don't care what anyone says about motivation and attitude, more times than not, the team with the most talent wins.

Borges and Franklin....seriously? Those dudes got fired. I'm not sure how many times I've heard fired dudes "good" decisions used to back up and argument.

Oh, and I hope for the best, think Kodi is a big man, and all of that stuff, too.

Blogger Commish of Old Pimps said...

BS: The talent gulf between the 2004 and 2009 Tigres is grand canyonesque, but not so with this year's team and 1993. Throw in all of last year's horrific breaks, extremely close losses, coaching cesspool, and widespread disfunctionality into the comparison and the prospects for a good (even great) season become much more plausible. In other words, the talent gulf is not insurmountable and the intangibles (e.g., kids fully invested in the program and GOOD COACHING) could make a meaningful difference.

8:49 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Comm'r...wasn't referring to your post, but to one posted in last night's thread that said this gives us 2 more wins because it's like 2004 all over again (or something like that).

8:53 AM

i'll tell you what, i wish i was half the man that Burns or Tebow are. i get pissed about things at work all the time and sometimes show my @$$. we can learn alot from these young men. KB is the kind of Auburn man we should all aspire to be with those comments.

The options weren't great anyway. Todd's one year of Juco and at Auburn were with his shoulder issue, we have to hope it has healed up at this point.

Todd's 12 sacks in 7 games last year weren't all his fault, our OL was so lost out there you had to be FAH to get out of the way sometimes.

9:18 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Look, here are the facts, no matter who the QB was going to be of the experienced bunch, they don't have stats to back them up. Let's face it, we didn't have a good QB on roster when Chizik took over. Does it really matter who the starter was going to be when compared to what was already known? No. The answer is that they plan to play Rollison at this point but do not want to throw him in the fire at the get go. We are no worse or better off today than we were this time yesterday. Those that are expecting a '93 like season and feel this damaged them, need a different perspective. The 93 season involved the SEC being relatively weak except at the top, this SEC is not weak. The coaches believe we can have a good season and I hope they are right. This year is all about laying a solid foundation for the future, so please keep this in mind. Sorry for the rant.

I see where this team can be more like the 2000 team than the 1993 team.

The 2000 team took the broken pieces of 98 & 99 and made them work somehow. There is no Rudi on this team, but there are some good RB's who I think will put up good numbers.

A healthy Todd could be a Ben Leard type QB who doesn't make mistakes and I think the talent we have at WR is greater than the 2000 team and the OL is probably equal on talent overall.

I personally think it is a good decision, but slightly disappointing. I was hoping one of the more physically talented players would get his act together. Doh well.

I put the stats out not much because I think there is a better option (TR aside), because the three choices all suck in some capacity or the other. We can send Tommy and the former staff and thank you card for their evaluation of QB talent the past few years - and for sleeping on the job.

I threw the stats out there for those folks that seem to think that somehow this is going to be a 1993 or 2004 kind of a year. Expectations like that are IMO, extremely unrealistic. Yes anything is possible, but highly improbable.

I can't help it - I'm a natural born cynic...

I don't know, last night's thread had an oscar nominating post by Hudson Hawk that this thread is lacking in order to be even considered.

I just refuse to think it's all doom and gloom and that because an injured Chris Todd looked bad a lot last year that it'll be the same this year.

He's less mistake prone than Kodi & Caudle and more experienced than Rollison, that's probaby what got him the job for now.

I couldn't find the Hudson Hawk post Eddie was referring to.

Scottie B,

im with you. i have been saying the last couple of days, if Malzahn says Todd is the one, then i am for it and will be happy pulling for him. i also believe if Todd does the same as last year or worse Malzahn is going to make the proper adjustments. this coaching staff is too good to not make sure the best pieces we have are all in place and working together.

Isn't Monday morning quarterbacking great?

It's easy to lose sight of the pyramid that is sports. Players identified with talent or knowledge make the progression to "starters" in High Schools and then College. From the entire country, only 116 get the label starters at a BCS college, not everyone can make it.

Our new coaching staff, with no political ties to the players, are going to play those that they believe give them the best shot at winning. CGM evidently saw what he was looking for in CT. I'm going to trust CGM's decision on this...he has the most riding on it.

It's time to move forward and get ready for some football.

OH, and 9:55 was a classic one too.

Anyways, everyone does and is entitled to their opinion. I love that we can reasonably talk about them here, I guess I just strongly disagree with them sometimes.

My best wishes to a young man with courage and integrity Kodi Burns. With all that has been said over the past 14 or so hours his stand up open commitment to Auburn can do nothing but help this team. Win 6 or 10 who knows but I am now leaning more toward the 10. and I am the one that predicted 7 earlier. WAR EAGLE Go TIGERS

James in B: I haven't read where anyone is predicting a 1993 season. The consensus is around 6-6 or 7-5, maybe as good as 8 wins.

Do you think that is too high? In fact, how bad do you think it is going to be?

I believe Tiger Rags just lost my business for a little while. I just don't get this shirt and I find it a terrible idea.

that would be like bammers wearing "Mullet head and toothless, and proud of it" t-shirts

I can't believe they did a lot of research on if that shirt was a good idea or not.

Horrible shirt.

It's a shirt that says "when people put us down, we just accept it as our lot in life."

Personally, I think cows are more honorable than mullets, and their hair styles are better.

I hav eno problem with the term Cow College. It just shows the Bammer ignorance.

Bahr plagerized the comment from the Texas-aTm rivalry and brought it here....so it is copycat to start with.

The AU grad "farmers" that I know all own large tracts of land and own numerous tractors that cost upwards of $100,000/ ea. Those same AU farmers normally employ a bunch of toothless Bammers to do the sweaty work.

I say laff at the fools and dare them to call us that again.

what the heck is that cow standing on, anyway. not only is it a terrible shirt, I can't figure it all out....and that brand is bordering on Trademark infringement.

I think that cow is standing on a Bammer...or...a pile of manure....which I construe to be the same thing.
