First Post: Thursday of Week Two

Hey everyone. Fun night last night. Thanks for sticking around and enjoying our time together. All in all, I'd say it was best-ever night HABOTN shenanigans.

Special collaborative thank-yous go to: MonD, Kristina, SteveFC, Big Snacks Frankenschmidt, j-z, FSJ, Norm and jhag for the totally random "are there any dippers in here?" question. Brought tears to my eyes. Good tears.

HABOTN hits are up. The Auburn stories are powerhouses at the Advertiser web site. I totally appreciate your steadfast support of this little enterprise. I'd give you a Yuengling Black & Tan if I had some and you were of age.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

RK, I was astounded by that offer. My GameStop manager said the game (GH:VH) has bee completed for some time. Activision, worried that GH:VH would negatively affect GH5 sales, basically canned the project.

Hence our ability to get the game for free. It's nuts.

UGA's schedule is brutal. If they lose to USC Saturday, they may only have 2 or 3 winnable games this year. Plus Cox hasn't practiced this week. Things could get ugly.

Blogger mytommyd said...

I talked to a UGA fan here at the office, and he's heard grumblings ALREADY about Richt. Of course its a somewhat unsatisfied fan base that seems to think they should always be in the SECCG. Also there are a lot of folks looking at the success of Chizik and Kiffin as a basis to get rid of folks. Not sure how their board feels about that, but the grumblings have started. Needless to say I'm a little happy to hear it.

I thought Richt might be on the hotseat this season. I don't really believe he deserves to be, but fans become impatient and they see the success of Meyer.

It's amazing to me that UGA could be envious of programs who have coaches who have coached in all of one game.

I've been a CMR supporter, but he is doing less and less with more than just about anybody else. It is reminiscent of Miami and Tenn in the mid 2000's.

According to Scout.com, UGA has been 4th,5th or 6th in recruiting every class since 2004 except for 2007. 2007 was 17th. The avg for the other years was 4.67.

The guy can recruit, but keeps weak coordinators and is notoriously forgiving on disciplinary issues.

May try and Gameplan Pitt this weekend JGT.

Any thoughts on Tigers-on-a-lake and GT tonight? If Clem gives too much love to GT's rush, look for GT to hit a long pass or two.

3:24 PM

Part of the problem is that the UGA fans are starting to worry about the "other team" in the state and now their coach ain't good enough....sound familiar?

Blogger mytommyd said...

Exactly Hoopie. Although I don't know if UGA has a coup planned in the background

3:26 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hoopie, our offensive offense was in the game until late against Georgia. Georgia had two first round draft picks in the backfield. If I were a Georgia fan, I would wonder what is going on.

As the highly rated recruiting classes, I don't buy into that too much. You can judge a recruiting class much better by how many of them make it to the pros. Walter Payton played his college ball at Jackson State, which I assume means he wasn't a high profile recruit, but he turned into a pretty good pro player.

3:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

UGA fans generally aren't as ignorant, arrogant or as prevalent in their home state.

3:28 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

The question is: Where was UGA before Richt?

3:33 PM
Blogger Monica said...

They were stupid to get rid of Jim Donnan so quickly.

3:34 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have to agree. Donnan wasn't a bad coach either.

3:39 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve..Those guys had NO blocking. UGA has had the most incredible bad luck with OL for the past 3-4 years. They have hardly been able to get an OL to make it to the Sr class. Grades, arrests and rediculous injuries are the cause. UGA lost 3 of the 5 Ol starters and the 2 best backups from spring 2008 until the first game.

They lost Trindon Sturdivant..again...early in the OK St game.

One of my daughter's best friends was a 4 star that started as a RFr and So. He got his 4th concussion and was made to quit.

Regardless of my defense of the OL, as I mentioned above, I agree that CMR has still done less with more than most anyone else in the time period.

I think they made the right choice on Donnan and backed it up with a good hire of Richt. The fact is they've still won ten games a year six of the last seven years and as disastrous as things look after one game, it is, in fact, only one game.

Hoopie, the offensive line is much more important than most give it credit for being. We were as bad as we were last season largely because of the offensive line. The evil empire was probably the best example of a team depending upon the offensive line for success.

I think rain favors MSU, although we will both try to run the football. Rain has a way of evening up talent differences and the MSU secondary is the question mark of their defense. Even Jax State burned them for a couple of long throws.

3:45 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The UGA football program under CMR is one of the wealthiest in the nation.

There were whispers of CMR being "too soft" last season. Those whispers will turn into discussions if things don't get better.

My guess is that a coup would not be in the works this season.

MonD...many old time UGA folks hated Donnan. They felt that he only knew how to win by pursuing and harboring thugs. I was surprised at the animosity.

3:47 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

Donnan may not have been the right coach for UGA, but he is a good dude. He is one of my favorite analysts out there right now.

I saw on an MSU chat where a hack was asked what is the strength of our team. He said the defensive line, primarily the defensive ends. Personally, I think it is the DBs. If Bates turns out to be as good as I think, this could end up being the best set of DBs I can remember us having, the exception possibly being 2004.

3:51 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Based on Saturday, I would go with the D-Line as our stength on defense. I thought they were pretty dominant compared to any other unit, maybe both sides of the ball. I'd give it to the guys in the trenches on both sides of the ball, albeit based off of only one game.

Good point Allen. Meanwhile, Richt lost for the first time to Tech last year. The only part of Donnan's record that Richt hasn't improved (greatly) is Florida, and there's no way around it, he's failed there. It's one thing to lose to Florida now, but he was losing to UF in the Ron Zook era.

4:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Ron Zook is another good coach that got canned too early, although it worked out well for them.

4:16 PM

Steve....given the choice of a good OL vs offensive skill players...I'll take the OL. The play starts with, and much of it's success depends on the OL.

TV cameras follow the ball, therefore fans tend to watch accordingly. In routine situations, I start the play watching the line and then pick the ball when it actually starts to go somewhere. Long yardage downs..I follow the ball.

4:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We agree Hoopie. I will go with a good offensive line any day. There are few skill players that can change a game without a good offensive line.

I've always felt like the UGA program has somewhat under-achieved. They have excellent financial resources and a recruiting base as good as most anyone in the country to pull players from. They just never seem to be able to cross over to that elite level.

Steve....the stock market is an indicator or corporate profits, which is not necesarily an indicator of how the overall economy is doing. The huge layoffs have resulted in a windfall for corporations and record unemployment. The increasing Federal debt will cause inflation adn erode those corporate profits and stock prices in a few years. I would keep my stock market investments "nimble".

If you are in real estate like I am....er...was, there ain't no money left to invest.

If you have long-term money to invest and know that you won't need the cash, you can buy distressed real estate for 20% of original value in some markets. The real estate market won't recover until the devalution stops. Bush's Oil Boyz in Tejas are flush with cash from the stunts that Bush allowed, but won't jump in and buy up the distressed properties until they are sure we've hit bottom.

Hi Guys

Can't post too much, but I also heard the Fbaum show today and was yelling mad (on the inside) as well.

What gets me is the lack of basic R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Finebaum allows a convicted murderer (aka 'The Legend') to come on his show and refer to Auburn as "cow college" every single day.

If the only institution that a person has been a part of in the state of Alabama is a prison, then they don't get to make fun of a 'rival school'.
