I saw Christian at Tiger Walk yesterday. He's one big dude. I talked to another recruits dad at Tiger Walk. I didn't get his name. The man standing next to me said he was from Mobile and was the #2 DE or DB in the state. Dad wants his son to go to Auburn. They took an official last week to LSU and his son marked them off their list. They were not shown anything there and the position coach didn't have time for them. I told his son we needed him at Auburn and he would definitely get early playing time! Saw Craig Sanders there too.
I never thought we would get beat by Kentucky. I didn't expect the offense to struggle so much. I thought our D played well enough to win, but the O gave them no help. The D definitely got tired. The O was well rested.
I'll be in Baton Rouge Saturday with absolutely no expectations! Maybe we can pull off the upset! We will definitely be the underdog, with the exception of Homecoming, the rest of the year.
As for Navy Nightmare, I think we saw that last night. The crowd just didn't seem to be into it. I was there until the bitter (and I mean bitter cold) end and then had a 3 1/2 hour drive ahead of me. I spent that time trying to figure out what happened.
It will be a long week with those arrogant, obnoxious fans who fly those stupid flags every day. Flags are for game day. You see more and more of them every day. Geez, act like you've been there. Now they will really come out of the woodwork.
When Chizik talked to Q coming out after the half he said that we needed to run the ball more and work on that.
In the first half we ran the ball better that we passed it. I think we had less than 30 yards passing at the half. Those comments may have tipped us off that there isn't much confidence in the passing game and in Todd's arm.
FSJ, my future ex-brother-in-law is a prime example. He called himself a Bama fan, but never really cared, until last year. This year he started flying flags on his truck daily. And wears him Bama t-shirt daily. It's actually quite comical.
Was it the early departing crowd that Christian found to appealing?
A little surprised that Bama jumped Florida. Surely that doesn't happen if Bama doesn't score late on. And what's the deal with State of Alabama quarterbacks? A month ago, they were all the rave. Then yesterday, Todd and McElroy lay an egg.

I can't figure out South Carolina's defense to be honest, though. They look good one week, poor the next. Give up 40+ points to UGA and Joe Cox and then hold Ole Miss to 10 (ok, Ole Miss is terrible on offense right now, but). Give up 26 to Kentucky last week and then hold Bama to 20.
Yeah, Sensi, I understand what JayG is saying about the economy affecting ticket sells for everyone, but for the fans that show up to the game, I expect them to stay to the end regardless of how poorly we are playing if it's only a 7 point game. Shameful.
I always stay until the end and did last night. In defense of some of those folks that left early, some of them had kids that were cold and tired and they had a few hours drive ahead of them. Also there were several elderly that left as well. Auburn's location makes it rough on those of us that live in North Alabama. I got home at 2:00 a.m.
I think UT is good enough on defense to give Bama some problems. Offensively, surely Crompton's game against UGA was a one-off, but it will probably be the best running game and o-line Bama has seen up to this point. I think the off week means some surprises from the Vols, but Bama will still win.

What happened last night? No depth.... We are a good team with our first 22.... After that it falls off drastically. Can't play the same 22 for 60 minutes - got to have those 1A & 1B starters. After our 1's get tired - we drop off fast. That will be fixsble give a year or two. We just have to be patient.
But LT, our first 11 on offense didn't produce points. Can't blame that on depth. They have been slow to start every game. After last week's debacle, I expected a fired-up Auburn team last night. I didn't see it at Tiger Walk, and I surely didn't see it during the game. I know they all have to be disappointed in their play, with the exception of Tate.
For what it is worth, FSJ, I do think Alabama is the No. 1 team in the nation, I just don't want to hear about it from those bandwagon fans. You, my friend, are one of the good ones! My husband is too.

For what's it worth, only 5 people caught passes yesterday. 9 catches for the first two WRs, 2 for Fannin and then 1 each for Smith and Mac. We've got to find a way to get the TEs and 3rd and 4th receivers involved. Otherwise we will continue to be predictable.

I'm starting to think that talent, not depth, is the issue on defense. We all thought are starting 11 was a pretty good group, but we have no depth. I no longer believe that. I think Bates is talented, Thorpe is talented. Stevens is good. Coleman is good (but injured). I'm not sure about the rest.

You made my point IV - The Big Eaters. we have no depth at all - they can't play 60 minutes any stay sharp the whole game - you have to have the same depth on the O line as yyou do at WR, QB, RB, etc.... Same goes for the D side.
My nephew just told me that the biggest cheer during the Alabama game yesterday was when they announced the final score of the Auburn game, and the ESPN announcers made reference to the face that this would be a good week for Alabama fans. Of course, it would be the same scenario in Auburn if the case was reversed.
I still maintain that as awful as Todd was, penalties was still the thing that bothered me most. We gained over 200 yards in the second half and scored no points.
I think you are right for the most part LT about the depth at the OL positions and I do think that you need to have capable backups in case of injuries. However, most teams substitue very little on the OL during games in order to keep their continuity. So far, we have been lucky and have had no serious OL injuries, just Isom's suspension.
I could care less about ratings.... Just want to get through this season with a winning record. Ratings/rankings will come in futer years... I like where we are at for the long term.
I think that our chances to beat LSU, however remote they may be, depends on and starts with the QB position. What happens there, Todd having a good game or a change in QBs, will be the big factor.
One thought about the game last night. Can we not get a chin strap for Tate that can stay snapped. He is going to loose his helmet at time he needs it the most.
I don't think that the chin strap was the problem as he finally went to the sideline and changed helmets. Either way though, he needs the proper equipment or he will incur an injury.
I still can't get over the fact that they pulled Tate on the goal line and put in FAH and ran him inside. What was with that? Did we have the wrong guy in for that play or did we have the wrong play called for FAH?
Penalties were the biggest cause of the perfect belly flop.
Todd has not looked good in a while. I don't think it is arm strength, but it may have to do with the health of his shoulder. When we are a threat to throw deep, the offense clicked. Lately we haven't had that threat.
There is not much to really say. We are running out of options this season. For a while I thought 8 wins likely. Now anything better than 6 would be a miracle.
Hi folks. I was at the beach, only watched on TV. Kentucky is a very physical team. They hit us in the mouth enough that it finally paid off in the end. Our depth issues have shown up and will continue to kill us. However, the D did their job. Offense looked poor, expecially at QB. I think SEC coordinators have figured out how to stop us and we will find difficult sledding from here one.
Also, did you guys see any wide open receivers last night. Maybe a couple of times. Our guys are finding it hard to get open just like last year, so it may not be all Todds fault. McCaleb not very effective against SEC FAST defenses. Can't get outside.
Sponge, my brother was at the game and he said there were a number of wide open players at various times. Todd just didn't see them. He seemed to be unable to check off of his first or second option.
Well, it may all boil down to the fact we don't have an SEC qb right now. Todd looked indecisive. Really, if you just ask this question. Who on Auburns team would start for Alabama? Maybe Fannin? Tate? Maybe an offensive lineman? Not one guy on defense would start for the Tide. Hate to say it, but that should put everything into perspective.
McCalebb can get outside but he's playing with an ankle injury that has him slowed.
Another problem is except for early in the game, we don't run a lot of misdirection or plays with a lot of movement like we were doing earlier in the year.
Our D and coaches knew KY wasn't going to try to pass the ball, they knew it. They didn't stack the box and try to stop the run. KY was running as base of an offense as you can and almost got 300 yards rushing on us. We knew it was coming and a) couldn't stop it b) had a horrible strategy to stop it c) can't tackle to stop it or d) all of the above.
There were open receivers, however the ball is either not getting there or getting there late and allowing people to get to or near the receiver. KY should have had more than one INT last night due to balls not being thrown on the money.
If Todd is hurt and not saying anything because he's trying to tough it out, then he's hurting the team by doing that.
Ah well...it's too bad our BYE week is so late in the season, IMO it's worthless for it to be that late, you get a week and then you're at your last game. What good is that?
Defensively, I was pretty pleased in comparison to what we had done previously. The offense looked way to predictable and we didn't make plays. This wasn't lost by our defense or special teams. It was all on the offense.
Todd is done this year. Whether Malzahn will admit that or not is the question. I'll check in later. This loss still sucks today as it did last night, but I'm enjoying the day.
I agree Steve in I think the majority falls on the lack of passing game with less than 100 yards.
However the defensive strategy when everyone knew KY was just going to run the ball the whole game so that their QB wouldn't have to be put into too many bad decisions was questionable as well.
I'll admit if our O had done anything our D wouldn't have given up a lot of those yards late because KY would have been forced into passing situations, but it was a team loss.
I don't know guys, but Kodi has started taking a lot more snaps. There is definitely something wrong with Todd. Frankly, he's just stinkin up the joint and I don't think he would disagree and if he was my buddy I would tell him.
Why do so many teams we play feel comfortable enough to bring in their second or third string QB, but we stick with our starter no matter what. I am not saying to rotate QBs or even take the starter out for the rest of the game. I am just saying when things aren't working, putting the backup in for a series isn't a bad idea. It may even help the starter to get a break and spend some time with the OC.
Ed Christian is an honor student, so apparently he won't have trouble qualifying. It is great to see. Now I would like to see us get at least two more offensive linemen.
We're seeing a lot more of Kodi on first down, which I think is helping raise the level of consternation.
I wholeheartedly agree with Jay's comments about Todd (his arm is shot) and Tyrik (burning a redshirt is foolishness).
I'm not sure what Kentucky gained last night by burning Newton's. My guess it would haven't have mattered who was at QB last night ... what happened would have happened.
This is where some may think me wishy washy. I thought Todd would be the starter and wanted it only if he could finish the season. Now I am afraid we are seeing the result.
I also had hoped that we would also be developing a backup QB by getting one in for a series or two a game. That hasn't happened. I see no point in redshirting both Rollison and Moseley. If Caudle isn't a viable QB, we should have been bringing one of those two along.
Yeah, I'd be surprised if Fisher is let go. It would be a shame. Good man, good coach. Scary to think where the Titans would be w/o him the last ten years. It seems like the team needs more restructuring than the coaching staff. But why not let Young play?
I bet they do in the second half. Why not? What else can happen? I guess Brady can go to the movies and watch 'I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell' before going home to trophy wife and scratches out support checks to Bridgit Moynahan (his baby mama).
At this point, Collins isn't working out. Now's as good a time as any to make Young the face of the franchise...again. Find out if there's a reason to hope for the future or see if we need to start getting ready for a high draft pick for QB next year.

Is Todd's arm shot? I don't know but he's certainly lost something.
I think a large part of the problem is our lack of depth. The offensive starters are nicked up and worn out and there's no one to give them a break. They start the game already tired.

I am still AU through and through. I still expect to win them all and am disappointed when AU loses. But like most here, it was UK with a freshamn QB. I thought you could not go to an away game inthe SEC with a freshman QB and win.
SoCal went on the road, UK went on the road, not calling for pulling the redshirt but come on. don't tie our hands.
How about UK running the wildcat with a guyt that doesn't juke around at the line of scrimmage. Thier guy, a good athlete, knows to go forward with a senseof urgency.
The team will need all of the support that we can give them now. So let's do everything possible to be the best Auburn fans that we can be. These young men deserve it.

I have no idea on Auburn/LSU at this point. Leaning toward LSU (first time I will have picked against AU this year btw) but LSU has issues too.

ReplyDeleteHi folks. I was at the beach, only watched on TV. Kentucky is a very physical team. They hit us in the mouth enough that it finally paid off in the end. Our depth issues have shown up and will continue to kill us. However, the D did their job. Offense looked poor, expecially at QB. I think SEC coordinators have figured out how to stop us and we will find difficult sledding from here one.
ReplyDeleteAlso, did you guys see any wide open receivers last night. Maybe a couple of times. Our guys are finding it hard to get open just like last year, so it may not be all Todds fault. McCaleb not very effective against SEC FAST defenses. Can't get outside.
ReplyDeleteSponge, my brother was at the game and he said there were a number of wide open players at various times. Todd just didn't see them. He seemed to be unable to check off of his first or second option.
ReplyDeleteMcCalebb hasn't looked 100% since he was injured on the bizarre fake punt call.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying he would be able to get outside against some of these defenses, but he hasn't had the same burst he displayed pre-injury.
Well, it may all boil down to the fact we don't have an SEC qb right now. Todd looked indecisive. Really, if you just ask this question. Who on Auburns team would start for Alabama? Maybe Fannin? Tate? Maybe an offensive lineman? Not one guy on defense would start for the Tide. Hate to say it, but that should put everything into perspective.
ReplyDeleteMcCalebb can get outside but he's playing with an ankle injury that has him slowed.
ReplyDeleteAnother problem is except for early in the game, we don't run a lot of misdirection or plays with a lot of movement like we were doing earlier in the year.
Our D and coaches knew KY wasn't going to try to pass the ball, they knew it. They didn't stack the box and try to stop the run. KY was running as base of an offense as you can and almost got 300 yards rushing on us. We knew it was coming and a) couldn't stop it b) had a horrible strategy to stop it c) can't tackle to stop it or d) all of the above.
There were open receivers, however the ball is either not getting there or getting there late and allowing people to get to or near the receiver. KY should have had more than one INT last night due to balls not being thrown on the money.
If Todd is hurt and not saying anything because he's trying to tough it out, then he's hurting the team by doing that.

ReplyDeleteAh well...it's too bad our BYE week is so late in the season, IMO it's worthless for it to be that late, you get a week and then you're at your last game. What good is that?
ReplyDeleteI think the hard part to swallow is that it was Kentucky. Not an upper level SEC team, but Kentucky.
ReplyDeleteNot only was it Kentucky, it was at home and they were bringing in a true freshman who had never played a down and we couldn't bet them.

Defensively, I was pretty pleased in comparison to what we had done previously. The offense looked way to predictable and we didn't make plays. This wasn't lost by our defense or special teams. It was all on the offense.
ReplyDeleteTodd is done this year. Whether Malzahn will admit that or not is the question. I'll check in later. This loss still sucks today as it did last night, but I'm enjoying the day.
ReplyDeleteI agree Steve in I think the majority falls on the lack of passing game with less than 100 yards.
ReplyDeleteHowever the defensive strategy when everyone knew KY was just going to run the ball the whole game so that their QB wouldn't have to be put into too many bad decisions was questionable as well.
I'll admit if our O had done anything our D wouldn't have given up a lot of those yards late because KY would have been forced into passing situations, but it was a team loss.
This just in...Brett Favre can still throw one heckuva pass.

ReplyDeleteI don't know guys, but Kodi has started taking a lot more snaps. There is definitely something wrong with Todd. Frankly, he's just stinkin up the joint and I don't think he would disagree and if he was my buddy I would tell him.

ReplyDeleteWhy do so many teams we play feel comfortable enough to bring in their second or third string QB, but we stick with our starter no matter what. I am not saying to rotate QBs or even take the starter out for the rest of the game. I am just saying when things aren't working, putting the backup in for a series isn't a bad idea. It may even help the starter to get a break and spend some time with the OC.

ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly agree with Jay's comments about Todd (his arm is shot) and Tyrik (burning a redshirt is foolishness).
I'm not sure what Kentucky gained last night by burning Newton's. My guess it would haven't have mattered who was at QB last night ... what happened would have happened.
This is where some may think me wishy washy. I thought Todd would be the starter and wanted it only if he could finish the season. Now I am afraid we are seeing the result.
ReplyDeleteI also had hoped that we would also be developing a backup QB by getting one in for a series or two a game. That hasn't happened. I see no point in redshirting both Rollison and Moseley. If Caudle isn't a viable QB, we should have been bringing one of those two along.

ReplyDeleteI think a large part of the problem is our lack of depth. The offensive starters are nicked up and worn out and there's no one to give them a break. They start the game already tired.

ReplyDeleteI am still AU through and through. I still expect to win them all and am disappointed when AU loses. But like most here, it was UK with a freshamn QB. I thought you could not go to an away game inthe SEC with a freshman QB and win.
SoCal went on the road, UK went on the road, not calling for pulling the redshirt but come on. don't tie our hands.
How about UK running the wildcat with a guyt that doesn't juke around at the line of scrimmage. Thier guy, a good athlete, knows to go forward with a senseof urgency.
