Gene Chizik speaks, 11/8

Hey everyone. I just finished transcribing a significant portion of Gene Chizik's Sunday press conference. I refuse to bore you with the "day-by-day" and all that stuff. You already know that Chizik won't discuss injuries and only occasionally sheds light on anything.

Here are a few notable comments:

  • On what he's planning to do with Anthony Gulley: ``We're going to have more of those conversations as the week goes on. We don't really know what exactly we're going to do. Obviously he's a very good athlete, so he can do a couple of different things. But you can't just throw him out there at corner against the Georgias and Alabamas of the world and say: Hey, good luck."

  • On the situation at punt returner: ``Just really disappointing. It just really is disappointing and we've invested a lot of time in it. We've got to get somebody back there that we can count on to do that. Obviously, we don't have anybody at this point we feel like can. So if it has to be somebody new, then that's what we'll do this week. But we'll investigate more as the week goes on."

  • On the University of Georgia's football team: ``I've watched a lot of them. Hey -- they're very, very talented. That has not changed. Let's keep in perspective that three of their four losses were to top-10 team. They're still a really, really good football team with a ton of talent. They've beaten some really good football teams. I don't think anything has changed with them."

  • On Eric Smith: ``If you ask him to block, he blocks. If you ask him to catch the ball out of the backfield, he does that. He's made some critical third downs and big plays for us. He's got a great set of hands. He's a physical guys who can block 270-pound defensive end. There's just so much he does -- he covers kickoffs, he's on our kickoff-return team. Anything we ask him to do, he does and he's very reliable."

    Dear Curtis:

    I have USC at 20.

Among the 60 voters in the AP poll, only one has USC lower than me. So if you wanna mouth, first mouth at the 56 voters who have the Trojans higher than me.

I'm almost the last guy on your list.

    Love,

  6. I love Eric Smith. Ran into him at the mall a few years ago (I live 10 minutes from where he played in high school)and saw him wearing an Auburn shirt. Gave him a War Eagle and he said he was going to play there. I didn't follow recruiting at all so I had no clue who he was. I wished him luck and went on my way. I maintain that my luck is what has turned him into a great Auburn player.

  7. Jay, I think Curtis asked you why your peers have USC ranked so why... not you.

    Precip: 10%
    Spectator Index: 9

    ReplyDelete
  53. So we're on the Deuce, huh? No offense to the #3 team in the nation and State, but we're the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. Put us on ESPN, not them.

I so do not want to have to listen to Bob Davie and Mark Jones again. I might listen to the Georgia radio broadcast over them.

JGT - You the man for putting NAVY 25! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Does Mr. Curtis dress in drag and think he is Gorgeous George re-incarnated.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Back in from my 1st pro game. Watched ATL-Wash. So much going on in that stadium. Why don't those folks sit down and watch the game. Sat on row 27, lower section 15 yard line. Saw lots of action, but as I said folks wanting to walk by to go get stuff all day long.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Regarding the service academies, am I the only one who thinks it's wrong the Air Force still runs mainly the triple-option? If you have the word "Air" in your school's name, shouldn't you be a five wide and let it fly passing attack?

As for Army, they should have to run the triple option and reply mainly on a ground game, because, well, they're the Army.

As for Navy, they should run a multiple set and throw and pass equally. And maybe they should only be allowed to play in rain or something.

These are the things I think about.

    ReplyDelete
  58. If AU finishes 8-4, this staff deserves a strong vote for SEC coach of the year and a good run at national coach of the year. I think the guy at Cincy will win that, but Chizik has done a very good job to this point. Winning the UK game would have been a world changer for lots of resaons.

If they go 9-3, for sure coach of the SEC and a strong push for national coach of the year.

    Just my opinion.

E-Bro - Navy threw 3 passes and completed 2. They never throw. All about execution.

    ReplyDelete
  62. JGT bringing the pain tonite. nice.

    ReplyDelete
  63. AU1NO4, not saying it doesn't work for Navy. It obviously does. Just making a joke, although I do feel strongly that 'Air' Force should do the run and shoot or something.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous7:28 PM

I will never forget the game I went to in '96 Navy against GT at GT. Navy needed to win and did to get in a bowl game for the first time since I was a kid.

When the GT OLine was lining up, they were a head taller then Navy's D Line it was crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Anonymous7:29 PM

E - I know, it is crazy that it works like it does. Especially when you know they are running. Just not sure who is running.

    ReplyDelete
  66. THT-In a lot of folks eyes they still have done a very good job. Even it does not amount to wins this year, there is a HUGE difference in the play and focus of this team over last years.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anonymous7:32 PM

Also nice to see AU back in the top 25 in the USA Today poll

    ReplyDelete
  68. You wonder why Navy's and Air Force's success is so much more sustained than Army's, given the similarities (unless I am missing something). I guess just good coaching, maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anybody heard anything regarding AJ Green's status. Contusion of the lung can be pretty painful.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Anonymous7:36 PM

I have no idea why. Air Force was always consistant because of their coach and being in the WAC. Army always beat Navy but the tide has turned, like that reference, and Army hasn't recovered.

Not sure if more are interested in dropping bombs and being on ships rather than being grunts.

Contusion of the lung sounds very painful.

    ReplyDelete
  75. FSJ-If you guys don't make it past FLA, the concensus is Cincy in the Sugar. What do think of that game?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Ewww..that has Utah written all over it.

Hope it is UF having to deal with that.

    ReplyDelete
  77. If AU finishes 8-4, several sites a retouting the Cotton Bowl. What do you all think of that?

    ReplyDelete
  78. The highlights I have seen shows mainly positives, but UA looks better than UF now, but I think UF has to be beat before they are dropped. I still think Tebow is tough and will write a chapter in his career if he pulls out another victory.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think we match up better with them this year to be sure.

Whether we can win or not remains to be seen.

This weekend was the first time in forever that I thought we had better athletes on the field vs. LSU.

    ReplyDelete
  80. ESPN guys are Cotton, Cotton, Capital One.

I'd love to see the new house that Jerry built, but Disney Rules.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The Cotton Bowl in the new stadium would be awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I am excited about Gulley. Players like that are special.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Whatever bowl we go to, I'm so proud of these guys. Anything good that happens in Amen Corner and the bowl game will be gravy on a great year. I'm a southern girl- I love gravy.

    ReplyDelete
  87. And if Eric Smith does everything that's asked of him, why don't we ask him to return punts and not muff them?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Since Benton now has his swerve on, let him return punts.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I'm a western boy and I love gravy.

    It's universally adored.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Jay, could you tell us how you really feel about Curtis? I just can't get an idea of which way you're leaning...

    ReplyDelete
  91. I don't think I've ever found anything that gravy doesn't make better. And I mean anything...

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ditto Jay's stance on gravy. Well except replace "boy" with "girl"

    ReplyDelete
  93. I could be wrong... Gravy might not help Curtis.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I had gravy on blocks of cheese today, and it was surprisingly good.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Wake... I'm intrigued. Details please.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I've not yet tried gravy on my ice cream. But since we're out of Hershey's, I may be willing to try it.

p.s. I'm going out on a limb and predict that MrsTHT restocked the supply of Hershey's while I've been at work today. Can't wait to get home and have some ice cream!!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I wonder if Sutton's Drug Store has gravy biscuits on their breakfast menu. I'm gonna find out tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  98. In Canada, Burger King sells french fries in a cup with gravy and melted cheese on top, and it's awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  99. If Choco Scottie were here, I'm sure he'd tell us there is such a thing as chocolate gravy.

I know in my mental image of heaven, there's chocolate gravy.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Couldn't you just melt chocolate and call it gravy?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Chicken fried steak with country chocolate gravy.mmmmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  102. That would be too easy. Add cream and butter...that might do it. Maybe ganache is french for gravy.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I dunnok, Kristinal. Gravy needs a melted fat that chocolate doesn't normally have.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Was at a wedding between a southern girl and a Sicilian guy... odd combo. So they had both italian and southern food there. I had some cheese and gravy on the same plate, we all know what happens when you have gravy on a plate with other food, it gets all over everything. So I ended up with cheese with gravy on it, it tasted pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  105. the key ingredient is flour. It just ain't gravy without flour. Trust me, I'm a Southerner.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I didn't say it would be gravy, just that you could call it that.

    ReplyDelete
  107. key ingredient is melted fat. flour is a binding and thickening agent for the fat.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Chocolate Gravy & Biscuits

uses "cylinder roll biscuits". That's a felony in my house.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Those canned biscuits are only good if fried

    ReplyDelete
  110. With lots of powdered sugar, PF

    ReplyDelete
  111. it's eerily slow here at work (finally) for the past hour. Which means just one thing. All heck will break loose when it's time for me to leave and I'll be stuck here working instead of at home eating ice cream.

    ReplyDelete
  112. And covered in powdered sugar...gravy.

    ReplyDelete
  113. canned biscuits suck.

    ReplyDelete
  114. But have you had them fried and covered in powdered sugar?

    ReplyDelete
  115. No..those are called red neck beignets

    ReplyDelete
  116. I vote any where in Florida so that I can attend but if not Cotton would be sweet

    ReplyDelete
  117. No point..

It's actually a good change of pace if you like fried things with powdered sugar on them.

    ReplyDelete
  121. THT...

What is wrong with you man?

    Two weeks without Q?

    ReplyDelete
  122. it's painful, FSJ. I ate a year's worth of 'cue in October, so I figured I should take a break. But 2 weeks is more than I can stand.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I'm not a huge fan of Eastern NC BBQ, mainly because I like my sauce to have a little ketchup in it...

but..I like all BBQ as a rule so I'll sure eat it.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I'm with you, faker.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Wilbur's (Goldsboro) is real famous Eastern NC barbecue. I had it last month and wasn't impressed.
