Bowling never felt so ... unclear

Hey everyone. I have returned from a post-Iron sabbatical of sorts. Thanks for sticking with the HABOTN for at least a portion of your Auburn jones.

So where will Auburn be playing this holiday season?

I have no idea. We usually have a feel for this sort of thing by now. The Southeastern Conference had six teams finish the regular season at 7-5. That makes things difficult on working stiffs like us. The bowls have their behind-the-scenes deals going, but they don't like discussing that publicly unless a car battery and jumper cables are involved.

So we'll just formulate our own truth.

FIRST VERSION
BCS Title Game: Alabama/Florida
BCS Game: Alabama/Florida
Capital One Bowl: LSU
Cotton Bowl: Tennessee
Outback Bowl: Georgia
Chick-fil-A Bowl: Ole Miss
Music City Bowl: Kentucky
Liberty Bowl: Arkansas
Independence Bowl: Auburn
Papajohns.com Bowl: South Carolina

SECOND VERSION (released @ 12:25 p.m.)
BCS Title Game: Alabama/Florida
BCS Game: Alabama/Florida
Capital One Bowl: LSU
Cotton Bowl: Ole Miss
Outback Bowl: Auburn
Chick-fil-A Bowl: Tennessee
Music City Bowl: Georgia
Liberty Bowl: Arkansas
Independence Bowl: South Carolina
Papajohns.com Bowl: Kentucky

What do you think about that?

OF NOTE: Auburn's offense, its apparent revival and its work against Alabama last week has created a buzz that is difficult to quantify. Some bowls may find that supremely alluring. Others may not care.

If he says Auburn appears to be in the running for a bid ... that doesn't mean AUBURN TO TAMPA.

So I'd take a few breaths before booking that flight to Tampa.

Outback people are the people I identified with my note on the blog ... they're enamored with Auburn's intangibles. That doesn't mean the deal is done.

Also, NO COACH has taken Auburn to a bowl game in his first year is the answer you wanted. You still think it will take 8 years for Chizik to get to where Tubs had the program....whatever.

Furloughs must indeed suck. I haven't been furloughed so I can only imagine. My employer is currently #15 (maybe 16) on the Fortune list and we went last year without salary increases and this year is still in question. So, we're all impacted to some degree or another. Tough times suck.

2:29 PM

Eddie, I have said 4 to 25 years for Auburn to get back to where Tuberville had us and it seems about right at this point. Four years seem reasonable. As for making light of it, that was not my intent.

As for the economy, what if your company had banned employees getting together in groups of 12 or more. Yes, we live in interesting times.

2:31 PM

I am going through the same thing with regards to raises. There were none last year and likely none this year. There is profit sharing, but it isn't what it once was. The myth that the economy if doing well is just that. It may be better in terms of the stock market, but for the average person it is unlikely to be fully recovered for another year.

I would definitely classify people such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett as greedy people, but they are also a big reason many have jobs.

It is the bad decision makers, like Madoff and our government that cause things like this, although much of it is inevitable.

There is a reason that this has been compared with the Great Depression. It is because the government reacted to it in a similar way, which extended things.

I think of times like this as inevitable learning periods. We go through them.

2:53 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- How about this for a novel concept...speculator driving up the oil market and banks making loans to people that should have no business receiving loans. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett have nothing to do with this.

2:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

WEG, that is rough. I am lucky to still get vacation days, but unfortunately I spent all of mine dealing with legal matters related to the passing of my father.

2:56 PM

The bankers making loans has a lot to do with this and that was directly related to pressure given to banks to allow people who would not normally be able to to buy homes. It wasn't a greed thing. It was the government doing it with the good intention that everyone should be able to own a home. Hence, the de-regulation. A lot of this is the result of good intentions.

Greed is Good.

The current financial situation can be primarily blamed on the Housing bubble, which was fueled by dubious banking law changes made in 1998. Both political parties were aware of the problems, yet refused to do anything about it. The parties each had differing motives, but because of greed and potential power loss nothing was done.

I've got 5 different banks that could foreclose on me right now. I've given the banks all of the monies I've saved since graduation 30 years ago. Every bank agrees that my partners and I developed sound, quality real estate and accordingly the banks are waiting as long as possible to pull the trigger. The Feds will eventually force the banks to pull that trigger.

At the same time, I am blessed to be developing commercial real estate for only one client that is doing well in this economy. This is paying the bills. If the deal with this client goes away, we'll have to move in with the in-laws.

We take it one day at the time and count all of the blessings that we have and continue to receive.

This too shall pass.

As for the oil market, I haven't seen anything that would make me believe that was a driving force, and I listen to CNBC ever weekday.

2:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hoopie, that is indeed where a lot of this began. And it is not a republican or democrat thing. It is a government thing. The banks are acting in their best interests to not foreclose. When it comes to foreclosure, everyone looses when you are basically upside down.

I figured as much, Norm. You said we'd be hard up without them, and between McKesson and JPMC, that would be an easy choice.

So what you're saying is, I shouldn't Google Mons Venus at work?

3:21 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Aiight. I'm fine.

So ... Outback Bowl?

3:22 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I prefer to go the Wikipedia route when I'm at work and unsure of whether what I'm searching for is appropriate.

From Wiki, to all of those that don't know:

Mons Venus is a nude lap dancing strip club in Tampa, Florida. It is one of the most famous strip clubs in the United States known both for both the quality of its dancers and the public image of its owner Joe Redner.

And there you are.

I have not heard of McKesson and I follow the market pretty closely. Thanks. It is something I will look into.

None of the following are dancers at Mons Venus:

Jan Terri
Charlie Weis
Carmela (not positive on this one)

The following may possibly be seen dancing during the kitchen tour at Outback Steakhouse (not Bern's):

Michael
J-Z

J-Z is going to be rockin' the Tampa Outback Steakhouse. fo shizzle.

i can picture J-Z rockin' the Tampa Outback Steakhouse now.

Man, I wish I could get to the Outback. It sounds like it is going to be a serious party.

my wife nixed my AU-FSU basketball trip but i think she'll go for New Year's in Tampa if i can guarantee shopping.

i'm willing to make that compromise.

i think once she gets her christmas present she'll agree to anything. :)

How long is the trip from Auburn to Tampa?

3:49 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

dunno about Auburn, but it's about 11 hours from my house!

3:50 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

that would be 7 hours from AU to Tampa Steve.

thanks mapquest.

3:51 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I'd say a little over 8 hours.

3:54 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

7? Going which route?

3:54 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

oh, nevermind. Yeah, I can see that.

3:55 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

A buddy of mine said it took him 7 hours from Tampa to the IB last Friday. It must be said that he is the type who stops only for gas.

I'm getting abused today. How I wish I was in prison!

So, is OUtback bowl official for AU?

3:59 PM
Blogger coosa said...

Sorry about the furlough, Jay. I'm very concerned about the future of our country.

I was already making plans to see Chris Todd's final AU game at beautiful Legion Field, and now I find out we won't be there. But with New Year's on a Friday, I might could make the trip to Tampa.

I haven't bought season tickets since 2005, so I guess the only priority I have is as an alum, and that usually counts for nothing with Auburn. Reckon I'll be able to order them through the school? Or should I start looking for a package?

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I've driven it too many times, and 7 is about right.

Mons is just the tip of the ice berg, if your into that kinda thing... You won't be bored.

7 is about right. I live a little south of Tampa one summer out of school. Terrible drive

Thanks folks. I don't trust Mapquest or other online sights when it comes to travel time. Typically they tend to be high, but you never can tell.

Blogger JD said...

Unfortunately, I am doubtful to be in attendance for the 2010 Outback Bowl. Mrs. JD and I have made a commitment to be in Gulf Shores for New Year's and I do not plan on breaking those plans. Would it be possible for us to trade UT for the Music City Bowl on the 27th? I will be available for that game...

4:07 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I wish I could find a way to make it. Currently I have legal stuff to take care of in Alabama in mid-January. Between the holidays and that would be tough, but you never know. Legal crap is constantly changing.

And I must admit, I love this team. They are one of my favorite Auburn teams based upon how the team chemistry developed and what they have been through. Yea, we had a better record in 2004, but I don't know that we had a better effort. These kids put their hearts into this season.

4:12 PM
Blogger JD said...

Agreed SFC, the force is strong with this team...

4:16 PM
Blogger JD said...

This is where I see them playing out to...

BCS Title Game: Alabama/Florida
BCS Game: Alabama/Florida
Capital One Bowl: LSU
Cotton Bowl: Ole Miss
Outback Bowl: Auburn
Chick-fil-A Bowl: Tennessee
Music City Bowl:South Carolina
Liberty Bowl: Arkansas
Independence Bowl: Georgir
Papajohns.com Bowl: Kentucky

UGA has accepted a bid to Shreveport. I guess that means UK to Nashvegas.

4:30 PM
Blogger JD said...

In my opinion Georger is the Instituion that got screwed this bowl season. They did just beat the #7 team in the country. Great present for that!

4:30 PM
Blogger JD said...

Geroger's prize for beating the #7 team in America...doing the Cupid Shuffle at some casino hotel in Bossier City!

4:31 PM
Blogger JD said...

Jay G, has USCe accepted a Bowl Bid to this point? Would it not be prudent to believe they end up in Ca$hville since UK was there 2 of the last 3 years. USCe also has the draw of the Ole Ball Coarch

4:34 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Does this mean all the bowls have made there pick? I don't think I would accept a bid to Shreveport until I was sure I wasn't going anywhere else.

4:35 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

I guess nothing about teams will be published on the bowls' official sites until after Saturday's games?

4:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wow, Georgia going to Shreveport and us to Tampa. If I had guess I would have thought it would have been more likely the other way around. Auburn has good mojo going.

4:42 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Not sure what to say about UK and So. Carolina. I haven't heard one way or the other there.

4:42 PM

Jay, I am curious about your opinion of our offensive resurgence in the Iron Bowl. So far the only explanation I can come up with is that we really did need the off week before hand and our starting defense is better than they have seemed most of the season. I can't believe it was simply a great game plan.

4:46 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

Imagine how good we will be on offense after a month off. we might score 100 points

4:48 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Actually, I meant defense and typed offense. While our offense did well in the Iron Bowl, our defense was incredibly better than I thought possible.

4:52 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Anyone know when we will be able to buy tickets to Outback through Auburn?

4:52 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Are we ready to flip...? Where is Norm?

4:54 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I don't know, Cincy, but I'll be buying, I hope! Penguins play the Lightning in Tampa on January the two, so LGG Byron, 2.0, and I may have to be in TAMPA before we scoot on up to PGH for Pens hockey on the 5th!!!!!!

4:55 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Let's look Outback and see if we can see the next page.

Great to see you Roosevelt. The effort was there, just like AU's defense in the IB.
