Florida coach Urban Meyer steps down

Hey everyone. This isn't Auburn-related, but you need to know about it.

Florida coach Urban Meyer announced this afternoon that his team's Jan. 1 game against Cincinnati will be his final as head coach.

This ESPN report says the decision is health-related.

I'll post more as it becomes available.

  1. Jon Gruden to the white courtesy phone.

  2. not #1, i'm signing in

and I can't get my pw right

    ReplyDelete
  3. that only took 4 tries

    ReplyDelete
  4. I guess this answers the question about Thigpen to Florida.

    ReplyDelete
  5. maybe Thig was interviewing for HC.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Jet's list:

    Gruden
    Shanahan
    Stoops

    ReplyDelete
  7. I know, Satan goes to UF! Then Bowden will finally get to coach at UAT

    ReplyDelete
  8. Jay...

Let's say Gruden were to end up at UF....How many Vol fans do you think would jump off the bridge crossing the Tennessee river in Knoxville?

    My prediction....A bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think Jet is spot on with his list.

i'd make Gruden tell me no and then go from there.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Faker ... it's all been done now. Lane Kiffin, all his antics. Nothing is shocking anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Boy, did Dan Mullin pick the wrong year to go to MSU.

    ReplyDelete

The UGA fans we're about to have over for dinner are gonna love this.

Did anyone notice that Urban got sick just as his huge senoir class and several key juniors are leaving the team? ...just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I wonder if Charlie Strong wishes he had stayed in Gainesville, and I wonder if he would have been considered for the job.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Meyer said he's staying in the area, will be associated with UF.

Does he have some protege somewhere? Maybe the guy at Utah? If Meyer dressed it up just so, I bet the Jeremy Foley would go for it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hadn't thought about that angle Jay..

Protege' situations work out so well usually.

Florida is crazy if they don't go get the best coach they can.

    ReplyDelete
  16. We know that he has what has been described as a "cyst" in his brain, identified in 1988.

    Maybe that turned malignant?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah..and he's also had issues with his brain before. A cyst or something or so I heard....

Had terrible migranes from it. It's all speculation but it does indeed seem to be health related.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That's what I was wondering too Jay.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Jay,

Did UF hire Willy Martinez today?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dr. Tate, the HABOTN's medical director and a retired radiologist, says these cysts are not malignant by definition.

However, they can grow and cause more trouble in there -- simply by crowding what is a very tight space. Without knowing where Meyer's lesion is located, though, it's impossible to know exactly what he's facing.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If I woke up in the morning with my head to sewn the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now, Urban.

    ReplyDelete
  22. PF: I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If Urban hired Willy Martinez, then he's much more ill than we could ever guess.

    ReplyDelete
  24. To coach safeties and help pick up the locker room? Surely Martinez could handle that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jay,

A doctor that posts on Tiderinsider said essentially the same thing. He said those types of cysts are usually treated conservatively and sometimes a shunt (did I spell that correctly) is used to relieve pressure. He did say that the pain can be terrible with one of those.

    ReplyDelete
  26. okay, thanks. some dude that is a family friend or something posted such on the magical world of Facebook, and I couldn't see anything about it anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  27. College football is never boring.

But I think it is very strange that Meyer is interviewing new coaches and then announces he is leaving. Am I missing something?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Something tells me that UF has known for a while (at least since his hospital stay) and has been making contacts behind the scenes...Just a guess.

I bet they already have their man.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And if what I am guessing is correct, then the Utah coach makes sense...

I'd still go after Gruden first.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, Pitt wins. Sorry THT, I was pulling for your Tarhills.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Pitt 19 NC 17 final

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous6:44 PM

Shanahan is considered a lock for Zorn's job.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anyone else brave the shopping today? There were some great deals for those who did.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well that was awful. I meant Tar Heels, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sounded like the country hick that I am

    ReplyDelete
  36. MEyer and family probably knew this was serious back when he was hospitlized after the SECCG. I would think the pain he is having has more to do with this than anything else

    ReplyDelete
  37. Color me shocked!

I wonder if he works a deal with UF to stay on retainer... so that when/if his health issues are resolved he could return?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Patterson of TCU may get a look

    ReplyDelete
  39. A source in Tampa (blog rules) indicate Chizik did not know about Thigpen interviewing with Florida.

That could mean two things: Either Thig didn't talk with Florida ... or Florida made a mistake. If I was a betting man, I'd take the former explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  40. WIllingham, Mike Stoops, Dan Mullen will make the short list.

I thinkthat is a combo of names form ESPN crew also.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Simply an amazing turn of events. I'm far more surprised by this than I was when Spurrier quit.

Speaking of that, I think Foley first calls the same two guys he called this time 8 years ago: Shannahan and Stoops, not necessarily in that order.

I think Stoops is probably not going anywhere, he genuinely seems happy at OU. Shannahan may get the nod.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Cincy - I was actually pulling for Pitt, at least when they had the ball. I was pulling for UNC when they had the ball. I spent a year at Pitt. I've never taken a class at UNC.

    ReplyDelete
  43. somebody send me an email when "How the Tide Rolls" is no longer a banner ad at the top of the HABOTN. I'll come back then.

    The A is for AUBURN!!!!

    bye for now.

    ReplyDelete
  44. THT ...

I'm 'bout tired of seeing that, too. Of course, I peruse the Advertiser web site and subscribe to the print edition, so it's all up in my bidness.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love the banner...

    :-P

    ReplyDelete
  46. I hate the Bammer.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm not seeing that banner just the one on the bowl package.

    ReplyDelete
  48. WEG,
    That's what I see also

    ReplyDelete
  49. Headed to Tampa on Wed and staying at McDill. Busch Gardens on Thurs...game on Friday.
I know someone who has 4 tickets to give away since they decided not to go.

    ReplyDelete
  50. SIAP... urban has a heart muscle defect per the ESPN scroll.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Right now....71 degree forecast,I'll take that!

    ReplyDelete
  52. But a good chance of rain also, yuck. But I will be there rain or shine.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wow, that's not what I expected to see when I came here today.

Best wishes to Corch Ervin Meyers.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah, the rain is supposed to be Thursday but 76 degrees. I can still ride rides in that kind of weather.
I loved that fact they mentioned that he is the only coach with 2 "full" national championships (as in BCS era)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I thought the heart was a muscle....maybe it's an organ or maybe it's both!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'll defer to the medical experts.

    ReplyDelete
  57. If he's got a cyst on the brain and a defective heart muscle, then it's definitely time to step aside.

For the likes of Meyer, coaching is a 18 hours on the job, 2 hours at home with the fam (sometimes), four hours of fretful sleep type of life.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Guess no one wants the tickets?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Any news on the recruiting front? I know Newton is supposed to announce on New Year's Day, any other info on him?

    ReplyDelete
  60. WEG ...

As much I'd love to go, I can't. Represent the Gump for us. I know you will.

    ReplyDelete
  61. UF is going to be hurting next year. Lost most of the staff, head coach, Tebow, not to mention all the other srs and could be as much as 12 jrs. It's a long fall from the top.

    ReplyDelete
  62. WTC...any ideas on how this could affect recruiting?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Will do Jet! I'm just excited because I haven't been to Tampa in 30 years and I get to see my Auburn Tigers at the same time!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think we will be at the Gardens thur. also. Supposed to see Avatar in imax while down there.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Emerald Bowl just became interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Anyone on here knowledgeable about ebay? Trying to figure something out.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Mrs. Jet has been in rehab for Ebay addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah, hubby is about to send me to rehab. He says I am "abscessed" with ebay.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Here's how I'd like to see the coaching carousel turn - $atan to UF, Boom to UAT. Now I'd find that most interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Did anyone see this about the amount of food consumed at the Outback Bowl welcome dinner tonight?
"Auburn and Northwestern players met for the Outback Bowl's welcoming dinner Saturday night and didn't get up until 750 pounds of rib-eyes, 750 pounds of chicken, 900 pounds of ribs, 700 pounds of salad, 200 pounds of green beans, 950 pounds of Bloomin' Onions and 1,200 pounds of cheesecake were served."

I think we might have to go to Outback tomorrow. Or maybe I will make that Tuesday night, since I have to go have my yearly physical on Tuesday and WEIGH and have blood drawn. How stupid was I to schedule that?!

    ReplyDelete
  71. What a way to start the second half

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous8:57 PM

WEGirl ... We are gonna be at Macdill also, We'll be in the RV park (FAMCAMP) if you come that way stop by ... just look for the AU Flags flyin'

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hate to bring this factoid up, but I just realized it.

The SEC Championship Game has been played 18 times now. A grand total of 9 different HCs have led their schools to victory.

Only 6 of those have never coached at Alabama at any time in their careers:

    Steve Spurrier
    Phillip Fulmer
    Mark Richt
    Tommy Tuberville
    Les Miles
    Urban Meyer

Nick Saban has beaten all six in the last 15 months.

This league is starting to get a mid-to-late 1970s feel to it, and I don't like it one bit.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Uh, Norm. I don't not want Boom at UAT.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Buying or selling Cincy?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Love that false start call on "The Entire Line." Don't think I've heard that one before.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Jet - was that a misprint or an intentional double-negative? In my scenario, as long as Boom leaving UT creates a vacancy, how about filling said vacancy with a well known duck hunter?

    ReplyDelete
  78. j-z,
Buying. My home address is confirmed, but I am buying stuff for the condo I want delivered there. Many sellers won't ship to another address. Trying to figure out how to add condo as a confirmed address. Sent email to paypal, but haven't heard from them.

    ReplyDelete
  79. You might try setting up another account with the condo address.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Norm... misprint.

Want Boom to say in Texas. Saban can go to Gainesville. UAT can rehire Curry.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Thanks, j-z.

    Jet,
It was too hard to hate bama with Curry there

    ReplyDelete
  82. CincyT ...

    Try harder.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Tyrone Willingham to UAT, jet.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Boom will be a head coach in the SEC before he ever gets more of a sniff of the UT head coaching gig than he already has.

    So says Norm.

    ReplyDelete
  85. A most excellent idea, PF.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I want a coach I don't like to go to bama. It intensifies the hate.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Norm ... I agree. LSU or Georgia.

    ReplyDelete
  88. ...or Charlie Weis.

    ...or Lou Holtz

    ReplyDelete
  89. I think Boom to Georgia if Richt doesn't have a great season next year.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Cincy - Jet's right. I've NEVER found it hard to direct my hatred there. In my short stay in Alabama this week, I spent time in two separate towns with a large UAT fan base. It really ticked me off seeing every vehicle, home or individual that was sporting UAT gear.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I understand all about hate. I hate them plenty, but I can hate them even more if I don't like their coach.

    Norm,
Being in Auburn over Christmas and seeing how many bama decorated vehicles were in God's country really made my blood boil.

    ReplyDelete
  92. A few days in Birmingham among the infidels is more than enough to keep the hate alive.

    ReplyDelete
  93. My time was in Troy and Prattville. Way too many UAT fans in each and on the roads in between the two.

    ReplyDelete
  94. My brother could be their coach and I'd hate 'em just the same.

    ReplyDelete
  95. My mother could coach them and I'd still... well... good lord... I'm getting soft in my old age.

    ReplyDelete
  96. J-Z could be the UAT coach and I would still hate them.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Jet's brother, j-z's mother, Epstein's mother, Norm's hot wife, whoever, it doesn't matter who the coach at UAT may be. I hated them yesterday, I hated them today, I hate them tonight, and I'll hate them tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Norm's hot wife? Hmmm, I don't know about that.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I would be disappointed if you didn't IV.

    ReplyDelete
  100. J-Z,

Did all of the little J-Zs have a good Christmas?

  103. Norm,
How did the future 4* like his santa stuff? Those were such fun days! Christmas with adult children is very fun, but way too calm.

    ReplyDelete
  104. The old man is stuttering.

    ReplyDelete
  105. J-Z,

Gaines has taken a unit commissioner's job in the Greater Hotlanta Council. Wanted an adult leader's uni for Christmas. Made the old man proud.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Cincy - he got a lot of stuff and loved most of it. He and I spent some time outside this afternoon playing with a riding toy and we were the only people outside in the neighborhood. When I was a kid, Christmas day and the day after I couldn't wait to get outside and play with my stuff and show it off to my friends and vice versa. I guess these days the kids don't want to go outside because their video games don't work as well that way. Seems kind of sad to me.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Were you outside coaching him up to a 5* Norm?

    ReplyDelete
  108. I know, we used to get bikes and skateboards and stuff, and of course my sisters and I wanted to show off our new clothes. I rarely see kids outside in my neighborhood at anytime. The kids across the street have a trampoline and a soccer goal in their yard, but I've never seen them use them.

We used to play outside until well after dark during the summer. Those were the days. Boy, do I feel old saying that.

    ReplyDelete
  109. IV,
    Very neat about your son.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Cincy,

When I was a kid, way back in the 40s, in the summertime, we didn't go home until the neighbors got tired of feeding us.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Had a vacant lot next to my house growing up. It was the football-whiffle ball-kick ball-Smear the Queer venue.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Cincy'

    You know about unit commissioners?

    ReplyDelete
  113. We used to play kick the can for hours. And also that game where everyone keeps hiding together until all the players except one are in one spot. Can't remember the name.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Jet,

We just played in the street back in my day. Of course there wasn't as many horse and buggies as there are now. Wait a minute, something is wrong about that statement.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Isn't that sort of an advisor with the Boy Scouts?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Cincy,

You, like Bo, know Unit Commissioners.

    ReplyDelete
  117. My father-in-law, husband and son are all Eagle Scouts, so we try to stay at least a little involved with Boy Scouts. Hubby worked with son's troop until he left for college. Now we just give money. Hoping Tyler will be involved when he gets out of school.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Does anyone beside me get tired of hearing that maddening USC fight tune throughout their games? I mean I bet the band gets tired of playing that thing over and over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  119. yes, but I get tired of most school's fight songs, except the beloved Tigers' of course!

    ReplyDelete
  120. IV ...

I plead guilty to liking it.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Giving money is good Cincy, always well received. I just did one of my good turns for scouting that I try to do each year by helping sort out and distribute popcorn and associated goodies that the units had pre sold. I worked at a shipping warehouse about 6 hours one day. I have been retired for over 13 years and when I got through, I was about dead. I hadn't worked that hard in quite sometime. The old man had really had it and Mama didn't have to rock me to sleep that night.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I was popcorn chairman for Tyler's Troop a few times - that is hard work!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Jet,

It is so monotonous, gets on my nerves.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Cincy,

This was for the entire Council, several hundred units. I got so tired of hauling pallets of popcorn, etc. around , counting, sorting and compiling it, I mean physically tired.

  126. It would be bedtime for me. G'night.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Okay, I think that the old man has had it as well. I gotta start getting ready to make the big trip to Tampa and yelling for my beloved AUBURN. WAR EAGLE and goodnight everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I've been told only Lexus and Duracell ads, so I'll give it a try.

Cincy - confirmed address = a credit card billing address. According to a post on ebay forum...

A confirmed address is one that matches your credit card billing address exactly (and is in the US).
Some sellers have old statements on their listings about shipping only to confirmed addresses. That requirement went out over a year ago.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Jet - you should try harder, too. You missed a BEASLEY opportunity.

Cincy - if you add the condo address to your paypal account, you shouldn't have any problem having stuff shipped there as long as you make sure you choose it when making your payment via paypal.

  130. nowebsite.com is reporting former AU Coach Tommy Tuberville is the leading candidate to replace Urban Meyer at UF. It was postulated that Tuberville said, "It's warm there."

    ReplyDelete
  131. I think Tuberville would be verrrry dangerous at UF. in the meantime FSU will pillage all of their recruits

Re: AU recruit Trovon Reed, the top player in Louisiana...

"They spent about an hour and a half with Trovon, " Thibodaux Coach Dennis Lorio said. "Frank told me, 'I'm going to fight hard for him because he's worth fighting for.' Frank had a real good relationship with Trovon when he was recruiting him for Tennessee.
"I think [Trovon is] seriously considering LSU. I think it's open."

  135. Good morning HOTTIES. I shouldn't be up this early, but I am. Getting excited about the trip to the OB Bowl. Gonna go eat some chow and will be back later. Have a great day.

    ReplyDelete
  136. THT-I think Reed is solid to AU. The new hire at LSU has a relationship withhim, but Reed didn't go with that coach while at Tenn so I do not see him going with him at LSU.

    ReplyDelete
  137. CH=B-I do not see Meyer leaving helping AU in recruting. The class is almost full now and the ones still on the Au board are not showing seriuos interet in UF. If this were ealier in the recriting process, it could havemade a difference.
FSU has only 19 verbals so they have room to make a run at a few recruits.

  139. Morning Hotties. Happy Birthday Jet. We're off to a new church this morning all the way down in Buckhead. Inconvenient but we're betting we won't be annoyed by the service.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Good morning, Hotties.

JayGT - I don't know why I didn't figure this out earlier, but there is also AdBlock for Safari (I have used it on Firefox for over a year). Thank your bosses for me. If they hadn't put vulgar ads at the top of HABOTN, I wouldn't have looked for Safari version of AdBlock. Bammer ads gone bye-bye!

    ReplyDelete
  141. wtc - I hope you're right. I have a hard time being that confident when LSU is in his backyard and can pressure him 24/7.

Cincy - I just finished my breakfast when MrsTHT gets up and tells me I'm going to have breakfast again. She made your special French toast casserole.

  142. Good Morning Hotties!

Spent my Saturday shopping and playing games until the wee hours of Sunday morning. My granddaughter decided to get up at 6:00 a.m., so I have me a fresh cup of coffee, reading up on the latest.

Thanks JGT for the tweets. I was shocked when I read the news about Urban. Coaching is a very stressful job, especially when you are losing your star QB and so many other players. Think he's heading to the NFL? I hear the Dallas job will be open soon.
