Why not write more?
I'll take a few minutes each afternoon (pre-Outback Bowl) to pontificate on some Auburn topic. It'll be freestyle, stream-of-consciousness stuff.
So on that note...
Walt McFadden is underappreciated.
Sure, he's an all-conference cornerback. Sure, he was the most reliable element of a defense that was unstable for most of the season. Sure, he used free time to groom some of the Tigers' young defensive backs and share the lessons taught to him by his predecessors.
What you may not know is how valuable McFadden has been in other ways.
Talking with reporters isn't easy. Questions sometimes get difficult, answers become confusing. A balance exists between what players want to say and what they should say. Identifying that balance and manipulating it comfortably turns a normal player into a ambassador.
And that's exactly what McFadden became: An ambassador.
The senior on Tuesday was awarded the inaugural "Good Guy Award" from writers who cover Auburn on a daily basis. After years of watching players duck interviews in the craziest ways -- Kodi Burns has nothing on David Copperfield when it comes to escaping a closed elevator -- we wanted to reward the guys who take the time to stand up when it's not easy.
McFadden did it time and again. When Auburn was askew during the 2008 season, he strolled in for his weekly powwows with the same enthusiasm he exhibits these days. If stories about the Tigers' defense were out of style, McFadden adapted by discussing anyone on the team.
He is a social guy. He pays attention. The comments he provided about teammates were insightful, thoughtful and often novel.
All this from a guy who was a sullen mess during his first season at Auburn.
He has our respect. He deserves your as well.
Yea for Walt!
ReplyDeleteholla!
ReplyDeleteWhut?
ReplyDeleteas in "holler".
ReplyDeletefor crying out loud. Why am I worried about that old thread?
ReplyDeletea sullen mess? I'd hate to have to clean that up.
ReplyDeletewow. Temple has been nothing but one disaster after another the 2nd half.
THT,
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know is why are you using J-Z's picture as your avatar?
AU basketball tips off in 15 minutes. Can you feel the heat?
ReplyDeleteum, no.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I have an opinion or theory. Shocking I know.
ReplyDeleteNewton's dad is apparently a preacher. That makes me think that he has some poetic sense of loyalty, while at the same time possesed by the idea of seeing his son in the NFL. Neither of those things is bad. Mullen was his coach and that pacifies the loyalty idea. MSU needs a bigtime QB and that guarantees spotlight. Here's the problem. Cam wants to go to AU. Father and son at odds about son's future. Go figure. Cam says," Okay, at least just watch them play. I want you to see why I think this school and this offense is right for me." Dad loves son and gives in. Again, go figure. Dad calls MSU, because he feels like he owes them an explanation due to the aforementioned relationship and breaks the news. "I'm still trying to convince him.".
Final synopsis: AU wins big and blows the doors off on offense in exciting fashion - Cam comes to AU. AU sucks it up - we probably lose him.
Or I could be wrong and he's just indecisive as hell.
ReplyDeletesounds reasonable to me, Phred.
ReplyDeleteKentucky vs Hartford High School on TV!?!?
ReplyDeleteGood theory and fun reading it.
ReplyDeleteI think it is simple.
1 Dad wants cam to go where he will be happy
2 Cam knows where that is
3 Cam is playing the spot light as faras he can.
4 You don't get many chances to have your 15 mainutes of limelight before you are thrown in with everybody else.
Because we got in on CN late I understand his Dad hasn't even been able to visit because of dead days. The delay could be a result of his Dad wanting to get a chance to evaluate Auburn. If so, understandable.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Phred as far as "Dad wants MSU, Cam wants Auburn, thus stalemate."
ReplyDeleteDon't know if us doing great in the bowl game will swing it or not.
Dad didn't come to Auburn on Cam's official visit. Maybe Dad was busy, maybe Dad is sold on MSU and won't entertain the thought of other options.
I don't think MSU would even be in the mix if not for a Dad-Mullen friendship that must have started in Gainesville.
I hope Dad relents or Son decides to do what he thinks is best. This guy could probably help us a great deal next season. I really don't see any of our other QB's leading a team to 10+ wins, but Newton might be able to do that.
Thanks for dropping the Walk knowledge on us Jay G.
ReplyDeleteJAYGT - so how many Northwestern spies are filming AU's practices from those skyscrapers?
ReplyDeletewell, our orange spray paint is still messed up bad. It looks like some kind of bad eczema before it even dries. We're going to run get some acrylic paint if we can get there before the store closes in ~20 minutes.
ReplyDeleteAU up 29-26 with 4:44 to go in the half. We are 2-11 from 3 pt range.
ReplyDeleteAU 5-9 on free throws.
ReplyDeleteWalt sounds like a a great guy. I hope he has success on Sundays.
ReplyDeleteAnyone watching the Citrus Bowl Lite?
ReplyDeleteSean-The guy that did the block inthe back on the KO return shoul dbe on the bus right now.
ReplyDeleteCam will come or not. Overall, I think he would be a plus but we'll do ok without him.
ReplyDeletefor those that did not see it, dude was lined up on the 45 (like a blocker) on the opening KO. He ran all the way back to where the returner caughtthe KO (while the ball was in the air) and the returner handed it off to the dude in a reverse and he went 95 yards for a TD. however, some knucklehead blocked some one in the back on the 6 yard line just as the dude was about to cross the goal line.
ReplyDeleteI agree wtc. What a stupid and unnecessary push in the back.

Who is Auburn playing in basketball...some scrub Mid Major who has no business playing with Auburn?
ReplyDeleteDid anyone see this? It's pretty AUsome. It's long but the 1st part is worth watching. http://www.vimeo.com/8212552
ReplyDeleteWisky is getting that TE, 84, off the play-fake up the sideline with great success.
ReplyDeleteI could see them doing that all day against our defense...I'm glad we aren't playing them and their battering ram of a RB.
ReplyDeleteYep Sean....
ReplyDeleteNorthwestern doesn't match up as well against AU as Wisconsin did, IMO.
Welcome, FSJ, I thought Mike Leach might have locked you in the closet or something.
ReplyDeleteWisky, 3 yards and a cloud of dust...boring yet effective.
ReplyDeleteMiami is getting dominated up front on both sides.
ReplyDeleteAU Bball update, anyone?

That's more like it.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed McFadden's comments a lot. The kid seems very mature and yet able to be pretty light hearted.
ReplyDeleteSo, Hottie poll:
ReplyDeleteShould Seanzie and Wife go to Sea World on Jan 2nd?
I'll hang up and listen.
By the way, Mike Leach has won the HC position on my dream coaching staff. He joins OC Tony Franklin and DC Joe Kines.
ReplyDeleteI think Chiz summed up Walt best when he referenced the Auburn Creed. Sometimes as fans we get down on these guys when they screw up either on or off the field often doing so without the knowledge of the sacrificies they make nor how they help out others behind the scenes. I am not naive enough to think that there aren't some guys that come to the plains not for the Auburn experience or the quality education but instead to get straight to the NFL (Karlos Dansby always gives his high school name when the Cards play on MNF); but I do know that the ones like Walt Mcfadden make me proud to be an Auburn Tiger.

Observations ...
ReplyDelete1. For those who want to screw with uniforms, take a look at Miami's uniforms. That's why we don't, and that why they're not "The U" anymore. For the love of Luther Campbell, Howard Schnellenberger and Michael Irvin, someone needs to put a stop to that.
2. Charleston Southern is not a mid-major. In its wildest dreams, it wants to be a mid-major.
3. Woody Hayes was cooler than the other side of the pillow.

ReplyDelete2. I thought that's how it was. Just Checking.
3. Word.
What about this uniform>>>
ReplyDeleteHmmm not a fan of navy on navy.
ReplyDeleteThere are things more pointless than watching Auburn basketball. Of course, I don't see any fishing shows on at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI like the white shoes for the bowl game.
ReplyDeleteThat uniform is blaspheme, Turfman. If you want radical changes to the Auburn uniform, I can put up with changes in facemask color, but that is about it.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you don't work for Nike, Turfman?
ReplyDeletehow bout the white>>>>>
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I must admit to liking Wisconsin, just not when they play Auburn.
ReplyDeleteno i'm a turf genius...
ReplyDeleteAU wins
ReplyDeleteLater everyone
ReplyDeleteJet good luck with the grill.
Changing the uniforms is just one of the reasons that Terry Bowden is my least favorite Auburn coach during my lifetime. Yes, that list includes Barfield.
ReplyDeleteFlorida still gets my vote for the worst uniform change. Those unis in the SECCG looked terrible.
ReplyDeleteDid some scouting on Georgia Southern - Auburn's Saturday bball opponent. They beat Troy (uh oh). But they lost to Florida so they can't be too good.
ReplyDeleteFWIW - I think our current black socks and black shoes are ugly.
ReplyDeleteSean, Everyone should do Sea World at least once. We waited until our child was old enough to enjoy (8-10 yrs old).
ReplyDeleteI like Busch Gardens better than Disney, Universal or Sea World. BG has a nice variety of rides, attractions and animals without all the unecessary hype present at Disney. Disney is my least fav but, thanks to my wife/daughter ...most attended.
I would like to give Miami extra credit for ugly pants.
ReplyDeleteI have free tix, so unfortunately, there's not much of an option. I do enjoy Busch Gardens, myself. The only thing I liked about UF's new Unis was the helmet.
ReplyDeleteThings keep going like this and somebody better get Miami some extra QBs. That was an entertaining hit.
ReplyDeleteIt is to Nike/Under Armor's advantage to effect a uniform change. Secondary sales will be huge.
ReplyDeleteVery few uni changes ever look good and psychologically it looks like a plea for attention. Va Tech and Miami have each reached the hideous uni stage.
I had a concussion and my room was totally blacked out. Light was painful, so it was a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI tend to believe that TTech wants to fire Leach and avoid the $800K bonus, for whatever reason.
Sean ...free tix ...then absolutely go.
ReplyDeleteDansby is not dissing AU when he lists his highschool. He's been asked about that before. His answer was something like "Everybody knows I went to AU. I'm trying to inspire the kids from my hometown and my highschool."
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem with that.
I love this color analyst. I have to agree that Wisconsin will be in trouble if they fumble the ball close to their own goal line. Now, that is some insightful analysis. I would also venture to guess that if we fumble the ball regularly close to our own goal line, it could hurt our chances against Northwestern. I don't want to go out on a limb, but that is my opinion.
ReplyDeletePhred, I think I owe you $20. Please contact me on facebook.
ReplyDeleteThis Leach thingy seemed like BS from minute one. CJames is a self-absorbed media type ...oh ....and he has been called a little league-helicopter dad.
ReplyDeleteLeach is too off-beat for the AU PTB and Alumni, but I'm sure a bunch of places would love to have him as their coach.
Another off-beat coach ..June Jones has got SMU into a bowl game in his 2nd year.
I am not sure what to think of the Leach thing. I do remember reading at one point that he doesn't get along with his AD.
ReplyDeleteWell they didn't want to re-sign him for whatever reason last year and they had a knock-down dragout last year.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think I should open a color analyst school. It would be adjacent to my you can single like a Bee Gee school.
ReplyDeleteAU fans that live in the state of Alabama live with second-hand treatment from the Bama-centered media. That is just not the case in the rest of the nation. I've lived in Fla, Ohio and Arizona and Auburn is placed on the same pedestal as Bama and the other top SEC schools outside the state of Alabama. The CFB fans in Arizona were slightly in awe of all SEC football fans.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Dansby saw that recognition and decided to give his HS props because AU didn't need anymore.
I like this Wisconsin running game. They came to play.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for Leach. That is like the worst place to coach and he has done a nice job there but his offense and personality are cold as ice so he cant get out. He was practically begging for the AU job last year.
ReplyDeleteHoopie, having lived in Florida and Tennessee, I know 100 percent what you're talking about.
ReplyDeleteMy post from last night on the Leach issue still stands:
ReplyDeleteHoopie said...
I don't have a problem based on what the press says that Leach has done.
If there is more to it and extenuating, heinous details are released, I will change my mind.
11:40 PM
If they wanted to keep him, the'd find a reason to sweep this under the rug. But since Craig James is on ESPN and the AD hates Leach...it's a fireable offense.
ReplyDeleteLeach is a great offensive mind, but I wouldn't want him as a HC. I prefer the more reserved coaches like Chizik.
ReplyDeleteIf Leach's poorly spoken attorney is correct in his assertions, Leach will take TTU to the cleaners in court.
ReplyDeleteLeach will, however need to get a different attorney.
I wonder if the TTU fans are in an uproar? I would be if AU did the same.
Tough break for Wisconsin.
ReplyDeleteSteve ...agreed on the preferred coach personality. Most AU folks would also agree with us.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like Holtzth @ Ark, Minn, ND or USCe.
Hoopie, I am of the opinion that TT has handled this terribly. They should have let him coach the bowl game and then dealt with the situation in the off season. They are getting a lot of bad hype and if Leach isn't fired, they have hurt themselves.
ReplyDeleteExcellent analysis by the color guy. Miami going down by 3 scores would hurt their chances. Man, I wish I thought of that one. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteSteve, they really need to convert this third down.
ReplyDeleteSean, you should be a color analyst:)
ReplyDeleteYeah ...this could begin to resemble a more public version of the CTT sit @ AU. At some point, when enough of the PTB want the coach out, a series of "mysterious events" are created that eventually make the situation untenable. Since the PTB aren't going to leave, the coach has to go .....usually to the chagrin of most of the fans.
ReplyDeleteIs Bob "Capt Obvious" Davies training all of these ESPN color guys?
ReplyDeletegnite all
ReplyDeleteI am of the opinion that CTTs departure was inevitable. I think he had become disgruntled with the situation. Yes, he was loyal to Auburn, but didn't like the situation. I get this from what I gleaned from player comments. It is pure speculation and I hope the environment is different for Chizik.
ReplyDeleteWisconsin is Wisconsining Miami the way Wisconsin Wisconsined us in 2005.
ReplyDeleteShocking analysis from the color guy. If Miami gets a score, they have a better chance of winning!!!
ReplyDeleteMan, I want my job as a color analyst. I predict if Auburn scores more points than Northwestern, they will have a very good chance of winning.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite line of all time: X team will need to outscore Y team in order to win the game.
ReplyDeleteSean, back in the 80s I actually heard a coach on ESPN say that if they scored more points, they would have a great chance of winning. My response? If we score more points and loose the game, our head coach should be fired.
ReplyDeleteYou morons! You don't know how to analyze a game. If you can't delve into the issues that decide championships, then you're not fit to be on TV.
ReplyDeleteSo, tell me ... What's Britney doing with her life?
You got to admire the use of the yellow pin to illustrate the number of time outs. Now, that's informative.
ReplyDeleteFolks, we have ourselves a football game.
ReplyDeleteWisconsin's got it.
ReplyDeleteMiami is folding like wet paper with any kind of pass rush.
ReplyDeleteJacory Harris is not very good. Not near as good as ESPN wanted him to be.

ReplyDeleteAs for Cam Newton, lots of rumors suggesting he was in Auburn and heading to Bowl Game. Only rumors at this point. If true, that has to be good news for us.
Mike Leach- What he did as far as the action alone was not bad, but what he did in trying to discipline a guy who deserved or didn't deserve it is not ok. If the guy had a concussion, you do not do this, especially in this time of head injuries concern. You do not shame a kid for being hurt. I think if all that has been said is true, then Leach should be fired with cause. You just cannot do this stuff. I also was under the opinion that Nall should be fired with cause also for the way he treated Chaz Ramsey if the allegations were true. Those actions cross the line, especially when medical conditions are in play. I have no problem with a coach getting into the face of the players, getting after them, cussing them, etc...but when coaches make it personal, they cross the line and should not retain their job. I worked for a bastard of a coach in Trickett as far as him dogging players out, but he never once made it personal in far as trying to humiliate or offend the player he was getting after.
Just my two cents on that.
Turf- Those Jersey's are hideous and I would cry if I saw them worn by Auburn in any game.
ReplyDeleteHeard Mike Leach's attorney last night - I think Leach may be in trouble, if that's how his attorney is conveying the message. Then again maybe he was walking through the airport preparing to be strip searched.
ReplyDeleteSean - my wife would tell you that it is imperative to go to Sea World, and if you do we'll see you there.
ReplyDeleteEduardo ...
ReplyDeleteYour two cents are priceless and spot on.
Good Morning Hotties....or something like that.

Yeah, AU. It was kinda like Cousin Vinny in front of the judge for the first time... except with a Texas accent... and not as smart.
ReplyDeleteYou would think he would have someone well versed since he is making $2.5m/yr.
ReplyDeleteHow crazy is it that if each of us went to work tomorrow as normal, we would make $800k for showing up on Dec 31.
I would have to make the trip to Tampa a little bit later than expected for that kind of bonus. Who am I kidding, I'd be later for 1/10th of that.
ReplyDeleteMan, I go to sleep being Sean the Idiot and this morning I look and find that Jhag went off and knighted me, Sir Sean was it?

ReplyDeleteMorning, HOTTIEs, just catching up on the cornucopia of thready goodness provided by our bloggin' benefactor over the past coupla days. JGT: he's good at his trade.
ReplyDeleteThe TTU deal sounds to me like Leach doubted that James' condition required him to wear sunglasses to practice, which I assume is against team policy. I figure Leach took it as a cocky kid trying to break the rules, and sent him to the dark room to make a point to the rest of the team. I agree that if that's all it was, then it reflects more poorly on James (and the TTU admins) for blowing it out of proportion. But now that they have, they should go ahead and relieve Leach of his duties. The smart thing to do would be to go ahead and pay him the $800K bonus due him on 12/31 first. If they dispute that, it comes off exactly like they were more interested in saving money than resolving the situation justly.
On more important matters: by all means, those HOTTIEs in town for the OB should check out The Colonnade. If its anything like it was when I lived in Tampa in '83, it's well worth the drive. Classic, old-school Florida seafood restaurant, and if they bring out a basket of what look like hush puppies, prepare yourself for an unexpected treat.
My take on TTU: Go ahead and part ways, but do it quietly. If you didn't want Leach or pay him 800k, you should have looked elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteThis whole thing just sounds like an excuse.

ReplyDeleteGood morning hotties.
ReplyDeleteGood read JET, fortunately I watched Cadillac grow up playing at Etowah High School. He was always a kid with a smile and very outgoing. Loved to play the game and give it all he had even in high school.
Yeah Baltimore guy, sorry not being mean but that's how I remember you, I was kidding around about the QB situation. It has been brought up and many a conversation, spirited or otherwise has ensued.
ReplyDeleteSean - That's funny.
ReplyDeleteI have heard many things...Rollison coming back, not coming back....Newton waiting for his Dad to check it out...not sure....either way. It's nice to have these conversations rather than worry about where xCTT was going hunting next week.
y'all just reminded me... Who do y'all think will be the starting qb next year? I would be interested in hearing opinions on pros and cons of each candidate... again.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion - If he came would be Newton.
ReplyDeleteThe reason would be due to his experience both briefly in the SEC and what he learned in JUCO....the issue would be whether he could learn the offense well enough. If he did earn it, I would think some would transfer that are in line.
Video of the "shed" and "electrical closet" referenced in the Mike Leach situation.

I think next year's starter is Caudle. Newton to MSU and Todd barely beat out Caudle this year.

ReplyDeleteI was doing some Christmas light cruising this year and the wife yelled STOP! So I say what's the problem and she goes look...and there it was in the window. "The soft glow of electric sex."
I think there has to be more to this Coach Leach thing. Surely TT wouldn't be stupid enough to call all this attention to the school if there weren't more to it.
ReplyDeleteBut, I too, am more and more thankful for Chizik everyday.
Remember when everyone was super pissed about the hiring of Gene Chizik?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I was one of the wait and see crowd.
Sean - It is the funniest thing and not to far from it is a 15' Miller Lite bottle Christmas tree. My wife wanted to take the picture and I complained.
ReplyDeleteI finally did and it is a great photo.
I think TxTech has a sissy on their football team.
ReplyDeleteMethinks you're right, THT.
ReplyDeleteCan someone name a coach that has fallen from Hero to Goat in a matter of less than a year?
ReplyDeleteTHT ...
ReplyDeleteI'm all for discipline ... but the kid had been diagnosed with a concussion. It proves nothing except that "I'm the coach. I'll show you." Yank his scholarship after the season if you think he's weak. Whatever. But isolating someone in a room twice shows poor judgment.
I think Mike Leach is an idiot, and if Texas Tech wants to have $800k and run his stupid 244 out on a rail before tomorrow, I'd say that's a pretty good bidness decision.
is that a trick question AU1?
ReplyDeleteFulmer got a big extension after the 2007 SEC championship berth.
ReplyDeleteHe was fired the next year.
I think the kid is probably a pansy and has a bad work ethic.
ReplyDeleteWe know Mike Leach is an eccentric dude who comes from the same school of thought as Mangino etc...
Basically, I agree with Jet.
THT - Ha, I was even wondering if Tubs fell that fast but I guess he did considering everyone was thinking we would win the West last yr.
ReplyDeleteOh no, someone brought up a former AU coach and more specifically, Tuberville!
ReplyDeleteHide the women and children.
Tuberville would have sent Adam James to ... get ready ... are you sure you are ready? ... I think you are ...
ReplyDeleteA DUCK BLIND.
LOL!!! That's funny, Jet.
ReplyDeleteNow that's funny, I don't care who you are.
ReplyDeleteThe people bashing the Chizik hire weren't very prevalent here. Some where disappointed, but I didn't see anyone really attacking Chiz, although some bashed Jacobs.
ReplyDeleteI was and am still a wait and see on Chizik. He has done very well starting out, but the real test comes in a few years.
I'd like to think Chizik has done a great job so far. Look at Michigan, they had a much smoother transition from xCLC to CRR and they've had back to back losing seasons.
ReplyDeleteChizik came into a disaster of a season and with limited players was able to salvage a pretty solid season.
By the way, I have seen where the Gator Bowl made it clear they invited FSU because it will be Bowden's final game. I am of the opinion that they didn't do him a favor and the West Virginia will truck FSU. Feel free to discuss.
ReplyDeleteFSU has looked good at times and then looked horrific at times. You give college kids terrific motivation and get their energy up and they're liable to play very well.
ReplyDeleteI think West Virginia would win under normal circumstances but I'm not sure in this situation.
Get Norm up in the bullpen!
ReplyDeleteIt's an easy discussion. I agree that FSU will get trounced.
ReplyDeleteWe want Norm! We want Norm.
ReplyDelete(I wonder if we should start playing "Enter Sandman" when Norm saunters in from the pen)
Why should Norm get to have all the fun? I say we flip it.
ReplyDeleteGuys, I'm not so sure.
ReplyDeleteRemember, it's Bill on the other sideline. Bill Parker? No! Not that motherscratcher.
Bill Stewart.
What do y'all think?
ReplyDeleteI think we should do it.
ReplyDeleteThis could get ugly.
ReplyDeleteSir Sean,
ReplyDeleteI think we should
Let's do it.
ReplyDeleteGet ready...
ReplyDeleteWithout the turnovers and ill-sdvised play calls (shovel passes) I think WVa would have probably beaten Auburn. I think they are very under-rated and will have their way with FSU.
ReplyDeleteGet set...
ReplyDeleteIt's about that time...
ReplyDelete
