Gene Chizik and Friend
Hey everyone. I have just returned from the Gene Chizik and Pat Fitzgerald (Northwestern coach) press conference. I was not able to gain access to the wireless network over there.
Sorry for the delay.
Sorry for the delay.
- FITZHGERALD on the weather: It's been 50 degrees warmer than is in in Chicago, so the kids are happy about that. We saw the sun today.
- CHIZIK on today's practice: ``I thought the tempo today was much better. The focus was much better. They got the message. It was about getting our team re-focused."
- FITZGERALD on thriving despite rigorous academic standards: ``We've been able to attract high quality players and world class student-athletes. With that comes the expectation that we're going to do well in the classroom. You can have that balance. It all starts with recruiting. Once you have that, it's like a vacuum that pulls everyone else up. It starts and ends with the way our kids are raised in their home."
- CHIZIK on Derek Winter, who is from Tampa: ``He is the epitome of hard work. In the Auburn Creed, it talks about hard work. He is what the creed says. He is what Auburn believes in. He knows what his role is right now."
- CHIZIK on why practice was better today: ``The effort was good yesterday. It wasn’t about effort. When you have practice that doesn't go the way you want it to, it's usually focus. I addressed it after practice. Today, everybody was good. Our guys -- it's never about effort. It's about if they're locked and loaded on the task at hand."
- CHIZIK on Walt McFadden's career: ``He was probably immature when I got here. That's the cool thing about coaching -- you get 'em when they're 18 and they leave you at 22. You can see how much you've changed their lives. He's grown up. He's matured beyond his years. He's been absolutely phenomenal for our football team. Everybody could take a lesson from his story -- there's a bunch of 'em out there."
- CHIZIK on how Auburn's offense runs these days: ``It's not always fast-paced. We try to do it at the right time. Every time is not the right time for us, individually."
- CHIZIK on the appropriate label for Auburn's offense: ``I don't have a name for it."
- CHIZIK on the offense, part III: ``It was kind of an up-tempo but starting with: How are we going to run the ball? Let's run the football and see what we can do off the running game. What was attractive to me was that it was going to let us run the football but it still was up-tempo. It's different than most. We start everything from trying to run the football.
Going back to being a defensive guy and having a defensive mentality, that's what I believe in. That's where my roots are." - CHIZIK on his defensive philosophy: ``Don't trick yourself. Who are you? Once you know who you are, that's how you play. That's what you do. You don't guru it up every week. I know that sounds simplistic. If you get them to line up and play fast, that's what you want defensively. Don't trick yourself."
- CHIZIK on Onterio McCalebb: ``The cool thing about college football is that they come from everywhere. You have the rich ones, the poor ones, the white ones, the black ones. His background was tough. When he didn't make it coming out of high school, people probably told him he couldn't make it. The ones who keep doubting him are the ones who motivate him. He wants to get his degree because I'm sure everybody is telling him he can't. I'm not near as proud of any of (his football accomplishments) as I am seeing him getting his eductation. That's where he is that's light years ahead of where he was."

Bam!!!!
good job, SFC
Derek Winter has been a surprise. I like it that the coaches have found ways to use him. He seems to have gained more attention for good blocking that for catching the ball.
I wonder what receivers we may see playing DB in the bowl game. Anthony Gulley seems like one candidate.
Sorry I couldn't live blog this.
I was pissed, believe me.
Not a problem, Jay. Technical difficulties happen. Thanks for the news.
Six!
Afternoon, Hotties. Montgomery is a tad on the cool side today, especially on Goat Hill.
Thanks for your efforts, JayG, and the substance.
It's 65 in Tampa now. Nice.
I was going to work on something about how Gene and his wife met each other (as adults) in a Tampa suburb. He totally shot me down. He is clearly 100% against the idea of anyone writing anything about that.
I am dumbfounded about this. If I was famous and people from Lexington asked about me and Wifey, how we courted and whatnot, I'd spill for an hour. It's fun. Those were fun times.
I'm just floored that Gene is so against this concept.
I mean ... I cannot explain how dumbfounded I am.
It's a cute story about a cute couple and two people who are completely pertinent to what's happening at Auburn ... both on and off the field.
Maybe Chizik's wife was mailed ordered....
It's okay Jay G, I promise....life does go on and you will survive!!! I've been shot down too.
One time I didn't get shot down was 35 years ago tonight! That's when I said, "I do"!!
I declare today I am still too tired from this surgery to even pucker up for a teeny tiny little anniversary kiss. Man I wish somebody had forewarned me of the state of exhaustion thyroid surgery leaves you in!
Then again it could be two grandchildren and their parents over Christmas that did me in....but I wouldn't change a thing!
And for the record I am jealous of all you that are going to the Outback Bowl so starting today I'm having my very own pity party!!!!
But I am never too tired to holler "WAR EAGLE", then again I still can't talk so I'll have to whisper a teeny tiny "war eagle" to all.
wareagle to you missinit.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and wishes for a speedy recovery.
missinit,
I add my prayers and wishes to digger's for a speedy recovery.
Jay, I suppose Chizik is just trying to keep his private life out of the papers, although meeting the wife stories are usually pretty cool.
Great substance JGT
As always enjoyed the insight. Some coaches just try so very hard to keep their family out of the publics eye and don't mean to afiend anyone. I would take it that way ...but that's just me.
I just read where the bomber caught on Christmas apparently had the explosives in some special clothing that he wore over his underwear. For the life of me, I can't imagine anything I would be will to set fire to my groin to accomplish.
When you are brainwashed from the cradle you do things other humans could not even think about doing.
That is my only answer to these peope who strap bombs on themselves and other stupid acts.
"I'm not near as proud of any of (his football accomplishments) as I am seeing him getting his eductation. That's where he is that's light years ahead of where he was."
Why I like Chiz....
DL
Me too!
This seems like a good time for the hotties to come up with a subject for an article.
Tuberville had the BBQ thing. What activities does Chizik have planned to build camaraderie between his coaches?
JGT, not to tell you your business but perhaps the meet up story is through Mrs. Chiz. UnlessMr. Chiz got to her first and told her not to say anything about it. If that doesn't work then start stalking the kids.
Ephemeral ...
Just left Goat Hill, and yes, it was chilly.
Wasn't the limo trip part of the coach/team building/camraderie stuff SFC?
sorry JG, i'm sure we all would've enjoyed the Chiz love story. oh, well.
tommy, that is a good point. All the coaches riding around together had to help.
The most pressing question I have is how motivated the team will be after having so much time off, but I don't think there is a way you can answer that other than play the game. I just have nightmares of the Wisconsin game a while back. Wisconsin was a good team, but we played the ugliest game that I can recall other than the GT game in 2003.
What's an eductation? (That was for Aero, I know you're here somewhere brother.)
I don't know what the story lines are for this game. But with the Wisconsin game, there were two.
1. Auburn, which had just embarrassed its top rival with 11 sacks, was fat and happy, gearing up to play a team it had defeated two years before in a bowl game.
2. Wisconsin was saying farewell to its beloved coach.
That's a recipe for a loss. If you couldn't see it coming from miles away, you weren't looking closely.
This year, we're coming off a near miss against UAT. So, hopefully, we're hungry. We have the opportunity to have an 8 win season, which is much better than 7-6. We've got Gus drawing up plays for nearly six weeks. That gives me hopeful thoughts.
Northwestern? Not sure what to think.

Please contact your mother regarding information on Cameron Newton, and report back ASAP.
Thank you.
Yo momma
Chiz definitely builds walls around himself. Just because he is HC doesn't mean that he thinks we are entitled to know all about his private life. It's certainly his right, although others would use it legitimately to promote the program and the University. I think he is also a little hard on the press, maybe because he thinks it's best, or maybe he just wants to.
Maybe he met Johnna in a strip club ... when he was a dancer with Chris Farley at Chippendales.
Northwestern is interesting because if I recall correctly, this will be their 8th bowl game, period. They are 1-7 in bowls, or there abouts. I know they only have one bowl win, and I think it was back in the 40s. Northwestern is the Vanderbilt of the Big 10, so that should be some indication, but their victories over Wisconsin and Iowa are enough to make me concerned. On the other hand, they lost to Syracuse and Minnesota. From looking at their record, it seems that they are a team that has gotten better late in the season.
Make that 1-6.
Dead Thread.
Independence Bowl at 4:00 CT. Georgia vs TA&M.
Just watched the Outback Bowl Preview, and now not only am I'm really jealous of you folks heading to Tampa, I'm also hungry. Think I'll stop at Outback tomorrow afternoon after a very relaxing facial.
off to the hizzle to watch UGA & TAMU.
go dawgs.
Players are riding roller coasters right now.
Just saw a pic of Isom, D. Lykes, what looks like Bates and ... Chris Todd on one of the big coasters. I am jealous.
Love Rollercoaster?
Interesting stuff out of Lubbock
Footnote from roller coaster post: T-Zac "doesn't do roller coasters" ... so he's just chillin.
So What Bowl about to kick off.
I have heard (you may have as well) that Leach and the people at Texas Tech aren't exactly BFFs. This may be their way to get him out.
Just got back to the in-home office and caught up on the HABOTN. You folks are funny.
If Katrina can tell when Michealla is kidding, then she can decode anyone and should be considered the final authority on such.
Off to watch the game with the UGA neighbors ....later
Interesting about Mike Leach. From what I have seen and read about him I have always gotten the impression that his bread wasn't fully baked.
Oh, he's fully baked.
Hoping to see Georgia do well. If Texas A&M wasn't doing so well, the evil empire might be in danger of loosing another coach to A&M. Okay, it ain't likely, but I can dream can't I?
By the way, I was pretty surprised that Richt fired his entire defensive staff other than Garner. It was obvious the DC was gone, but all of them?
I played golf today in the sunshine in short sleeves.
Paroled!!!
off to dinner with the family at Margaret's Cantina.
WARRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
Mike Leach showing his caring side.
Happy Holidays All!!
Just rolled in from Memphis TN spending a wonderful Christmas out on the family farm.
Jet - I saw where Newton was to decide on Thursday.
This Georgia game was suppose to be high scoring. So much for that.
I am so glad we did not hire Leach.
PF you should check your foot temperature and ask yourself if you are ready for this.
It is a bit painful
Hey some action and now a commercial
Whoa, that was wierd. I am not CL Kelly.
JG, how did that happen?
7 zip Ags
Dogs are barfing
I dunno. It's a miracle.
Why did we play a whole first half?
There has been more action in the last 5 minutes of this half
JGT is freestyling on a new thread.
I am also glad we didn't get Leach. From what I am hearing, he will soon be available to someone.
Hey Missinit, I understand that you are suffering from thyroid surgery I advise to visit best thyroid doctors in Los Angeles they will give you best treatment.
