My Heisman ballot

Hey everyone. After conferring with Wifey, whose opinion I at least considered, I have made my final decisions.

1st -- Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

2nd -- Mark Ingram, TB, Alabama

3rd -- Toby Gerhart, TB, Stanford

LOOKING AT THE CANDIDATES
Suh's numbers: 82 tackles (47 solo, 35 assists), 12 sacks, 1 interception.

Why I like him: Suh is a dominating defensive player whom I consider the best DL of my professional career. He does everything. He played a huge role in Nebraska's midseason renaissance and you saw him play against Texas. He is, in my opinion, the most outstanding player in college football.

**********

Ingram's numbers: 249 carries for 1,542 yards, 15 TDs. He also caught 30 passes for 322 yards and another three TDs.

Why I like him: Ingram is a stud. He's the best tailback around. He gave his team a bankable, trustworthy, game-breaking element every single week. Well, except for Auburn week. Ingram still had a whale of a season. Outstanding player. Not quite as dominating as Suh, but still a top-shelf star.

**********

Gerhart's numbers: 311 carries for 1,736 yards, 26 TDs. He also caught 10 passes for 149 yards.

Why I like him: Gerhart is a workhorse back. He averaged 26 carries per game, which is incredible. You know how often Ben Tate ran the ball. He only averages 20 carries per game. He made Stanford relevant on the national scene for the first time in a while.

*********

*Wifey said I should vote for Ingram.

*A guy I know through correspondence, Kari Chisholm from Oregon, is busting his hump to determine the winner. He's gathering votes in an unofficial capacity. He's been 100% accurate since starting this endeavor in 2002.

  3. If I had not read, you all would've gotten beat at that stupid game that is being the first to post a unsubstantial comment on a thread.

  4. Big Snacks has turned brutal in recent days.

    ReplyDelete
  5. NDONKEYKONG!!!!!

He's getting some love nationwide. I wonder if he has a chance. Same for Toby. Ingram is the frontrunner, but even Colt and Tebow will get some love.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I wonder how many others will vote Suh as the # 1 guy?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Whas'SUH'p?

    THT, you have e-mail.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Jet said I'm brooding. Guess I'm just letting out that angst. I need a break before I dye my hair black, start wearing eyeliner, and start singing sad songs.

    ReplyDelete
  9. According to StiffArmTrophy.com, Suh is leading in terms of first-place votes.

    ReplyDelete
  10. PF, when you get to that point let me know. i'd love to be at your first concert.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i'm late to the party but i had never heard of SUH before saturday nite.

however, i'm down with his #1 vote. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I have to think the guy who wins it will be the one that gets on nearly every ballot, no matter what place. The votes are gonna be divided among those five guys, with some Casey Keenums of the world thrown in. Unlike the past few years, we have no idea who's going to even be invited to the Athletic Club.

Unfortunately, I think Ingram will be the guy on everyone's ballot, even if he isn't first on them.

    ReplyDelete
  13. As a big NFL fan, I've heard all about Suh, he's been the talk of the draft gurus for months.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Should have been Gerhart over Ingram. 200 more yards rushing in one less game. 144 yds per game vs 118 and he actually faced more good rushing defenses than Ingram did (4 in the top 30 against the run vs 1 for Ingram).

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm pretty sure I patented his new moniker,Ndonkeykong, several months ago. I'll have to check my notes. Figures Scottie would be among those (everyone) that don't read my posts.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Any of the 3 on Jay G's ballot would be a worthy winner.

As much as it hurts me to say it, I still think Ingram should be the winner. That 6.2 yards per carry vs. an SEC schedule is hard not to notice.

    ReplyDelete
  17. There are seven guys who could be No. 1.

It's like arguing about which color you like better. I like yellow. How are you going to convince me that I don't like yellow anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Because yellow sucks, Jay G.

I always figured you to be a blue kinda guy.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If Houston Nutt goes to Kansas, that means no more Steve using the "Ole Nutt" line.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yellow is the color of my favorite college team: IOWA.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You gonna head to Miami to cover them after the Outback bowl?

    ReplyDelete
  22. PF, i love your posts. that was just plain mean. i read your posts....sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jay G, I think you bumping them above PSU, the everlong doubter of all things Iowa, got them a BCS bid. I think you should get a cut.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jay G,

Any word on how Auburn's doing with the guaranteed ticket sales? They making progress? Think they'll get rid of them all?

    ReplyDelete
  25. What happened to Carmela? She was an impostor, wasn't she?

    ReplyDelete
  26. your mom's a wasted ballot.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wasted sports talk host

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wake, you can NEVER get rid of that avatar.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The "yo' mama" card has been played. It's on.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I suppose I will get rid of it when Faker finally admits that his love has truly shifted to the Auburn side... don't worry, it will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jim Rome returns after a three-month absence.

    Welcome back.

    ReplyDelete
  32. he was gone 3 months? really?

he used to be on here in knoxville till they put on ANOTHER freakin' local UT show. gag.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thats a good ballot.

Like you said, arguments can be made for all seven.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Kelly is as good as gone..

    Kelly

    ReplyDelete
  35. Luv,

He needs to get rid of it soooooooooonnnnnnnn!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ok..I'm not getting this...

Why would Houston Nutt be interested in Kansas?

    Nutt

    ReplyDelete
  37. FSJ, I saw that. I don't believe it will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  38. jevan snead is gone after this year and look what they did with him.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nutt and WVU's coach need to be fired for the way they both misused their best player this year for the majority of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If Nutt leaves, they need to go after Tuberville or Fran.

    Just kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I had nightmares before the Ole Miss game of Dexter McCluster, I wish they would have figured that out after we played them.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That's his name Sean..i can't ever remember it for some reason.

I can remember Devine's name..and I was shocked at how they forgot about him and tried to win the AU game with the new QB.

    ReplyDelete
  44. tubs would leave in a pine box this time...

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's amazing that they forgot about him and he STILL ran for 200 against us. Not a fan of the greased midget attack. Not one bit.

    ReplyDelete
  46. fran might arrive in one...

    ReplyDelete
  47. They forgot about him in the first half the year before. Y'all were wearing them out...

    Devine's one tough dude...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Nutt, Bill Stewart of WVU and Jim Leavitt of USF are on my final ballot for the Heisman of facial expressions.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've got a picture of Saban during the Iron Bowl...

If you had seen that one on TV he would have made your list.

    ReplyDelete
  50. this is definitely the most congested HT race in a long time. many really really good players and great players that had just above average seasons for them. i'd like to see ingram get robbed, but he probably deserves it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'll trade Ingram winning the Heisman for Texas winning the National title.

    ReplyDelete
  52. the all sec team picks speak volumes as to what AU's coaches were able to accomplish with what they had. AC is the only player on the team that opponents truly feared. darvin adams is the closest thing AU's offense has to a true game breaking player and he's not in the same league as greene, jones, randle, tolliver, hodge etc.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'd take 14-0 over Ingram winning..No question.

    I'd rather have both though.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i saw a bammer with a puppy at the iron bowl this year watching tiger walk.

i was tempted to ask her the following question:

if i can promise you 100% that bammer wins the iron bowl, sec championship and national championship right now, will you kill the puppy right now?

i chickened out because i didn't want dog blood on be for the whole game...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wow, Ryan Mallett was robbed with Tebow being the All SEC QB.

Darvin Adams doesn't even make 2nd team neither does Byrum.

    ReplyDelete
  56. according to Jay G's guy at stiffarmtrophy.com, with 20% of the votes tallied, it's a four horse race between McCoy, Gerhart, Ingram, and Suh, with Suh way on top. Awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  57. what does everyone think of yoxall's job performance over the last few years? is anyone concerned he may have gotten a little stale like the previous staff?

the reason i ask is watching other teams (bammer especially) AU's players do not look as physically developed--especially in the defensive backfield. darren bates looks and plays more like an lsu, bammer, or uf db than anyone else on the team. bammer's d-linemen also look lean and cut where some of ours look a little soft in the middle. i know getting more talented players and numbers will cure some of that but just wanted to know if anyone else felt the same about yox. he's done too much good for too long at AU for me to write him off very quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  58. But Peter -- Jim Rome says mine was a wasted vote.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Nutt being "interested" in Kansas is Sexton shopping him around, you folks should know better by now. He shows interest, Ole Miss gives him a raise, case closed.

    ReplyDelete
  60. FSJ - I'd rather have neither. I hope I get what I want.

JayGT - Blue is definitely better than yellow, which makes Gerhart better than Ingram. Don't ask me how. It just does.

    ReplyDelete
  61. PROGRAMMING NOTE

I will be live blogging the AU-UVA hoops game tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  62. So what's the chance that Suh and/or Ingram voters checked the Stiff Arm site before casting their votes and then chose to leave Gerhart off their ballots in an effort to give their own choice a better chance?

    ReplyDelete
  63. YAY...

Live blogging basketball..One of my favorite things from last winter.

    ReplyDelete
  64. interesting conspiracy, THT.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Jay G,

will your live blog contain the phrase "geez, this team sucks?"

    ReplyDelete
  66. PF - My paranoia does have its advantages.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Gerhart is looking good right now according to the prognosticators. Phew.

Jay G, I regret to inform you that I will not be able to live blog your live blog tonight. Please believe me, it's not becuase I am live blogging someone else's live blog, though. Trust me.

    ReplyDelete
  68. PF - that was very funny because it will be so true.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Writers are generally a principled/self righteous bunch, THT. I don't think any conspiracies would happen for "their guy" to win.

Now if it were the coaches poll, on the other hand...

    ReplyDelete
  70. So JayGT - are you principled and/or self-righteous?

    ReplyDelete
  71. I don't understand Ingram over Gerhart.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Duh, he's an attention whore. MonD said so, as did someone on ITAT.

    ReplyDelete
  73. K-Mo - For the life of me, I don't understand Ingram on anybody's Top 3 ballot. But then, I'm a "blue" guy.

    ReplyDelete
  74. K_Mo, does your avatar have a kitten under her shirt? That might solve a HABOTN mystery. Well, it might if PaulMain's avatar were a cartoon.

    Where has he been, anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Stick Gerhart in the SEC and see how he does...

I'd wager he wouldn't be dragging Rolando McClain down the field like he did those Notre Dame players.

    ReplyDelete
  76. JayGT - thanks for the Stiff Arm Trophy link. Their past results are fascinating. But I'm thinking that I'm probably wasting my time hitting the refresh button on that site every couple of minutes!

    ReplyDelete
  77. He'd lower his shoulder an knock McClain on his butt, homer.

    ReplyDelete
  78. you're right FSJ. He'd just run over him and leave tread marks.

Just kidding. McClain ain't no Bosworth.

    ReplyDelete
  79. This is from a Twitter feed off of the StiffArmTrophy site:

Toby Gerhart is a Heisman finalist. He'll be joined in New York by Mark Ingram, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow and Ndamukong Suh.

Nothing earth-shattering, there, but if it's correct, at least we know who is invited to NY.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Don't forget to sign up for the HABOTN Bowl Pick'em! This can be found on Yahoo!

    This group is FREE.

Group ID# is 12699 and Password is: outback

Info on how to sign up for a "wager" group can be found by signing up for the free group.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm a blue guy, myself.

    ReplyDelete
  82. FSJ, Gerhart has faced consistently tougher defenses than Ingram while outperforming him. The myth that he wouldn't be as good against the big bad guys in the SEC is just that, a myth.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I never realized Antonio Goodwin decommited, crap

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yeah, Jhag, he did. He might still sign with the good guys.

    ReplyDelete
  85. smellin like a dawg to me

    ReplyDelete
  86. so the four dudes who voted UT #1 Rob Akey from Idaho, Tim Brewster from Minnesota, Mark Dantonio from Michigan State, and Bo Pelini from Nebraska.

Also, Brian Kelly voted Cinci #1...

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2009-final-coaches-ballots.htm

    ReplyDelete
  87. My ballot:
    1. Gerhart
    2. Gerhart
    3. Peter "Big Snacks" Frankenschmidt

    ReplyDelete
  88. SOrry JHAG... needed some substance to my ballot...

no hard feelings.... if we ever meet I will buy you a cup of rice.

    ReplyDelete
  89. ooooooooooooo no harm done in that case, yay

    ReplyDelete
  90. that's a good ballot, DL. Must have been an off year on college talent in North Korea.

    ReplyDelete
  91. So that was really Jim Rome earlier?

    ReplyDelete
  92. thanks for that link, jhag. Too bad I'm not on the coaches poll. TCU deserves at least one first place vote.

They should just let Al Golden vote and forget the other coaches. Much simpler. He had 1-14 pegged with the exception of a flip at 4/5.

    ReplyDelete
  93. on the list of Heisman voters at the link JayGT provided is one whose affiliation is "blackathlete.net"

I was unable to find the voter who is affiliated with aryanathlete.net.

    ReplyDelete
  94. On Atlanta radio they were throwing out that Georgia should hire tubbs to run the defense for one game.....

He would never do it... but damn that would be fun...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Stiff Arm has updated their tally/projections. Gerhart's projected margin of victory has narrowed, with Suh and Ingram in almost a dead heat for 2nd.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I like your ballot, Jay.

But how can they put the uat kicker on the all-sec team ahead of Byrum? Tiffin missed 3 extra points; Byrum missed only one kick the entire season, and it was a 40+ fg. If he had made that one, and been 100% on the year, would it have made any difference?

    ReplyDelete
  97. So Pasche, Griese, and Spielman are set to announce the Outback Bowl for ESPN. Last time they called an early morning Auburn game, we got pounded in Fayettenam.

BTW, heartbreaking about Spielman's wife. Sad, sad story.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I do not understand the lovefest over Tiffin. I think he got his votes because he is like the scoring leader in the conference. i think that he missed 3 extra points is telling. He flubbed a couple of FGs also. That kick he missed inthe AU game was ridiculous.
I would give the 1st team to the kid from UGA.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Early line has UA favored by 5.5.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I agree with WTC. UGA kicker #1 followed by Byrum. That is how it should have been.

    ReplyDelete
  101. So we know Tebow, Gerhart, McCoy, Suh, and Ingram are going to New York.

    Less than Spiller deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  102. JayG-I passed up the front row seats tonight. After seeing them get hammered by Troy, I had to pass on this one.

    It is on TV tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Where's Darvin Adams on any of the All-SEC teams?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Bro- snubbed, that's where. He deserves at least 2nd team. All-SEC teams are jokes.

    ReplyDelete
  105. For shame, for shame.

    ReplyDelete
