Newton delays his decision

Hey everyone. Our friends at BulldawgJunction.com, a website that covers Mississippi State, are reporting that quarterback Cam Newton has delayed his enrollment decision.

The former U. Florida player was supposed to choose between Auburn, Mississippi State and Oklahoma on Dec. 31. That decision is on hold.

The Tigers recently extended an offer to the quarterback, who now plays at Blinn College in central Texas. Of note: Blinn's coach is Brad Franchione, son of the former Alabama coach.

Anyway, Newton's father said a decision will be announced Saturday at the earliest.

There is an abundance of threads today!! Not that I'm complaining, just trying to keep up. So is Cam just being an attention ho? I really think if he is as good as billed, he's got a better chance at starting at Auburn than the other two.

mytommyd - maybe he's just trying to convert his dad to AU.

Partly cloudy, WINDY, high 61 now the forecast for game day. The WIND could be favorable to the better running team, i.e. Auburn.

Every time I check the forecast, the predicted high drops another 5 degrees. If I check it too many more times, the high will only be 32, which would obviously favor NW.

Blogger Norm said...

Well then, please stop checking the weather. Just pack appropriately for 3 different highs and prepare to dress in layers. There you go. Problem solved.

Ah its a Dad thing.

THT I just hope the sun comes out if there's going to be a big wind. Yeah there I go again thinking about comfort instead of the team's success

THT ..I just looked at the weather. The Thursday overnight low is 61 and the high for friday is 61. The temp may drop as the day progresses. WIND @ 22 MPH!!!.

This will hurt our vertical passing game moreso than the dinks that NW throws. Let's run the ball.

Does this Cam Newton thing sort of remind anyone of a basketball player named Tony Douglas? He was a good player but his dad was always getting in the middle of everything.

My friend in Tamps sent this for yuo guys staying at/near the Extended Stay. (sorry for the length)

There's a Ruth's Chris Steak House (www.ruthschris.com) very close with a steak and lobster special for $39. There's also a Leroy Selmon's (www.leeroyselmons.com), PF Chang's (www.pfchangs.com), Palm, Capital Grille, Maggianos (maggianos.com), Landry's, Bahama Breeze, Fleming's ($$$$), Roy's ($$$$), Shula's ($$$$), Romano's Macaroni Grill, J. Alexander's (www.jalexanders.com my FAVORITE in the area, and not TOO pricey), Carrabba's, Ruby Tuesday, Cheesecake Factory, and Rusty Pelican (waterfront) all within a mile or so. I recommend any of them, and some require reservations. Some get very crowded around certain times (ball games, holidays) so they may want to call ahead regardless. Feel free to cut and past this to send to your friends, as I believe that they all have websites. Personally, I would go to Ybor City (Tampa's historic district) and enjoy dinner at the Acropolis, or to the place we went on Bayshore (The Colonnade www.thenade.com), but they're ten minutes or so away. Hope this helps.

any chance the Hottie crowd can have an audience with you Friday morning before the game?

3:31 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Interesting numbers here.

Auburn averaged 74 plays per game during the first six games.

Auburn averaged 66 plays per game during the final six games.

Defensive problems did affect Gus Malzahn's approach. The pace he so badly wants/wanted wasn't available. He said that'll change next season.

3:31 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

I don't know if I can make it to 2:30 or whatever with just a bowl of cereal. I will have to do some scouting for a breakfast place.

I ate Cuban/Spanish at a place in Ybor called Columbia Restaurant. I recommend it. It's somewhat upscale and pricey.

3:34 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

some of the Hotties chose to sit in the $150 seats instead of The OFFICIAL HABOTN SECTION. That's why I was wondering if we should meet outside the stadium. But inside would be a much better photo op.

2.0 and I are going out in the cold now to finish up the HABOTN.COM/HOTTIE HO! placards.

wtc, based upon what you heard the other day about Newton likely being MSU bound, I am encouraged that he has delayed his announcement. It says to me that he may still be deciding. Do you see it that way?

3:40 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Steve-Yes. I am of the same opinion as Phred. He may now be wanting to see the game Friday before committing.
However, it seems all the news (anouncements/non-announcements)is coming from the MSU recruiting guys. They are reporting what his dad is telling them. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but it just seems those closer to AU have been getting the news from the MSU folks. (Not that there is anything wrong with that)

Blogger wtc said...

The Temple coach is wearing a tie. Other than Schnellenberger, can you think of another coach that wears a tie on the sidelines?

3:51 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

doesn't Tressell wear a tie under his sweater?

3:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

If I were a recruiter, the cell job to Newton would be easy. Take a look at the offensive line that will be blocking for you. Look at the receivers you will have available. If you think MSU has better, you should be at MSU.

3:55 PM
Blogger API said...

Posted this a couple of days ago, but with Cam's history, you don't know if this guy will become the next Otis Mounds or the next Brandon Reed. While I believe in 2nd chances, AU doesn't have to be a 2nd chance factory. I say pass. I would also prefer not to see him on the schedule against us next year either. I'm hoping he plays out of conference.

3:55 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I think he does.

3:56 PM
Blogger wtc said...

That answer was for mrtommy.

3:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

API, at first I was of the same opinion, but the more I thought about the way Chizik has handled discipline, if Newton screws up he will go down quicker than Brody Croyle on 4th and long.

3:58 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

well, that didn't work. It's 40 degrees and the paint looks like all "crackled", sort of burnt looking.

We are going to take the paint and placards inside and let them warm for awhile, then try again in the basement. Hopefully, we won't fume up the whole house.

4:01 PM
Blogger API said...

SteveFC: Granted if Cam signs he will be on a short leash, but if a terminating event is a DUI, domestic abuse, or he knocks some dude out at the Lexington - the story won't be the short leash. The story will be another AU player in trouble. Hey, I may be wrong and this kid may go pre-med and cure cancer, but I don't have a good feel about this one.

4:02 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

API, the other reason to get Newton is that apparently Rollison is in pretty hot water. Without him, our depth at QB starts looking pretty bad, as amazing as that may seem.

4:10 PM
Blogger API said...

Apparently 5 QBs aren't enough and you need a 6th as insurance. Yes, that is amazing - and somewhat depressing. And to think that some teams actually gripe about giving a scholly to a long snapper.

4:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Of Rollison isn't available, we are basically down to Caudle, Trotter, and Moseley. Kodi would likely be an emergency option, but look at that list. Caudle has been turned down by at least 3 coordinators. Malzahn had him even with Kodi. Trotter and Moseley are the least highly regarded of the group, although they both have earned praise recently. Caudle and Kodi are the only ones with experience.

Maybe Trotter and Moseley turn out to be the guys and hopefully Rollison will be the third. As for Kodi and Caudle, they may end up in the running because of experience. I would rather not see that.

4:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Basically, Kodi is no longer a QB and Caudle doesn't seem like a good option. With Rollison possibly not available, that leaves 2, not 5.

Blogger Aubie said...

I think the Cam delay is good news for us. Cam made his official visit without his dad. If my kid was making a decision that important, I would want to see the place and talk to the coaches.
My guess is that Cam and Dad make the short drive down I-85 to visit the Plains and the coaches.

4:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Aubie, the coaches won't be there. They are in Tampa. It would seem the delay would just be to see the Outback Bowl, but that is a lot of guessing on my part.

Another thing is that MSU is our first SEC opponent next season. I believe we play them in the second game. I would much rather have Newton on our sideline.

4:37 PM
Blogger Aubie said...

So the coaches wouldn't fly back to meet with Cam and his dad? I think if they want him, they would. Not saying they will, just a possibility.

4:39 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

They could likely come back immediately after the bowl, but that would have them meeting with him on the day he is set to announce.

The point may be mute because Temple is beating UCLA in a bowl game, which is a sure indication of the end times.

1. Have truck serviced and tires rotated & balanced. Check
2. Get truck washed. Check.
3. Fill up the truck. Check.
4. Put magnetic AU stickers on truck. Check.
5. Add a couple of pounds of air to tires. Check.
6. Make sure proof of insurance and registration are in truck. Check.
7. Start to pack for trip. Check.
8. Make sure tickets and room reservations are in overnite bag. Check.
9. Leave emergency phone number with wifey. Check.
Have I forgot anything folks? If not, we are on the way soon.
I do have one other question, does anyone know if there are any speed traps on I-75 between Hotlanta and Tampa?

mootsmoot - the earliest they can meet with them on campus is Jan 2 (Jan 1 is in dead period), so they don't have to catch the Concorde back to AU after the Outback Bowl.

IV - here's my version ;-)

1. Have car serviced and tires rotated & balanced. THTjr will take care of that at 7 a.m. tomorrow (this is mainly in preparation to our drive to Pittsburgh the day after we get back from Tampa).
2. Get car washed. HAHAHAHA
3. Fill up the car. Check.
4. Put magnetic AU stickers on car. Huh? Mine are always on the car.
5. Add a couple of pounds of air to tires. see#1.
6. Make sure proof of insurance and registration are in car. Check.
7. Start to pack for trip. I'll do that Wed night at midnight when I get home from work.
8. Make sure tickets and room reservations are in overnite bag. This one could be trouble.
9. Leave emergency phone number with wifey. Check.
I do have one other question, does anyone know if there are any speed traps in the air corridor between RDU and TPA?

Here's my list:

1. Go to The Catfish House tonight with annoying relatives. Enjoy meal anyway.
2. Go to work tomorrow.
3. Don't go to work Thursday.
4. Cook for guests Thursday night ... either chili, or something on the new big @$$ grill.5. Watch a lot of football.
6. Funnel contributions to the Newton Foundation of Georgia. (just kidding).
7. SULLIVAN!
8. Send letter of congratulations to Walt McFadden on his Good Guy Award victory.
7.

THT,

These are new magnetics that my son got for the trip. I waited until I got the truck washed before I put them on. I have an AU tag on front with a personalized AU (AL)tag on the rear. I think most everyone that knows me realizes that I am Auburn all the way. If they don't $crew them.

I've been away, so please correct me if I'm wrong. My understanding is that Auburn had five remaining scholly's for 2009 that we could use prior to 1/1/10. Four are gone and we only have one left - but we have to use it prior to 1/1/10. I heard our interest in Adams dropped because he may be having problems graduating in time and would count against 2010 instead of 2009. If Newton can't make up his mind prior to the calendar turning it would seem to lower his value to me. If he's not a 2009 signee then he would have to be a lot better than a HS player to warrant a 2010 scholly. And there are some really good HS players still available.

5:40 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

astatguy -

I don't know the rules, but I think I read that ALL signees sign a NLI on signing day in February. The early signers are actually signing some generic academic grant/scholarship to cover their tuition until the football scholarship takes effect. So I don't know whether or not midnight Dec 31 is relevant to a player counting towards the previous class. My guess is that you just have to enroll in January to count in the prior year's quota.

5:49 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

maybe we should just ask wtc's Mom.

5:51 PM
Blogger astatguy said...

Thanks TarHeel, but I know that Guyden, Sanders, Mosley and one other (I think Bonomolo) have already signed and will be students at Auburn on signing day. If a player graduates from HS or JC after the fall semester of his senior year he can sign papers, enroll and be eligible for Spring practice. They can sign at any time in December and it counts like they signed in the previous February. I hope there's a January grace period if we really want Newton so we don't lose a 2010 scholly.

6:03 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The JUCO transfers signed NLI.

The high school graduates signed some papers, but not NLI. Sanders & Curry will enroll in January, but they will not sign a NLI until February. They'll still count against the 2009 scholarship limit since they enrolled mid year. And yes, they'll be involved in spring practice.

just trying to keep the thread going...

Concerning a deadline for recruits to count against the 2009 class: They must have signed and be enrolled in school on the day class starts. For Auburn, that's January 11th.
I have this on good authority. If you have differing information from a better authority, I stand to be corrected.

Also, we can sign more than five early enrolees, but only five can count against '09. Thus, should we sign both Adams and Newton before January 11th, giving us a total of six early guys, one of them will count against the 2010 class.
